Our lunch in Browns in Town was a feast that probably could have tied us over until the next day. The meal was so filling that I felt I would need a wheelbarrow to be led away. But the food we ordered was worth feeling so full because it was wicked good. Located on Strand Road in downtown Derry, outside the City Walls, Browns in Town has a modern interior with brown wood walls in the primary dining area and a little postmodern-styled lounge in the front entrance. The vibes are fairly relaxed where you don't feel you have to dress up outside of jeans and a shirt to enjoy a meal. The food per our experience is certainly that of comfort and quality. One aspect my wife and I loved about Browns in Town, and many of the restaurants we visited in Northern Ireland and the Republic, is that on the menu we know which dishes are celiac friendly or have a celiac option, and note all the allergens present -- e.g., gluten, shellfish, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. My wife is celiac, so this allowed us to choose this restaurant since it offers many gluten-free options -- and not just salad. Both of us ordered the local seafood chowder (I had the gluten version, while she had the celiac option), which was creamy, buttery, and delicious, loaded with a variety of seafood caught in the area and served with homemade bread. The Mushroom & Black Garlic Risotto was out of this world, with the pine nuts and parmesan providing a nice balance with primary ingredients -- also luscious and rich. The chefs cooked the risotto to perfection. I probably was fine just ordering that, as the black garlic chips (fries to us Americans) were overkill, but I couldn't help myself being at a restaurant for the first time in a city I have never visited before. My wife had the beer-battered cod in the gluten-free option and incredibly tasty, especially when combined with the mushy peas and tartar sauce. We didn't even attempt to order dessert because we were full to the point of being in a food coma. Fortunately, we had a lot of walking around ahead of us, which helped work off our meal a little. But I would absolutely return to enjoy some of the other fares they have on the menu. read more

Well let me just start by saying this is hands down the best place in the town. When my business partners come from overseas I always bring them here. First we load up on some Chateau Latour 2009 (is there a better year? Ha, I don't think so) then drive straight to Darren's house and dance with that sweet Peruvian Princess. You have to ride the fucking rails before a business meeting with the lads, its a necessity. Lady cane knows me better than anyone you see, better than my own mother, that bitch. Wasn't sure what to expect, but we were pleased with the meal and menu choices. A little pricey, but worth the splurge to go for the fixed price meal which includes dessert. The better tip is to make the early bird dinner option before 7pm to save a few. We enjoyed two different appetizers (carrot soup and pear salad), grilled chicken with potato and carrot purée (tasty) and friend enjoyed the fish and chips. While the atmosphere might not be inspiring, the food most certainly is. From the local seafood chowder and spiced carrot soup (both served with house-made Guinness bread and local butter) to the tomato and feta salad, our expectations were far exceeded with every dish. As part of our tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland we stayed two nights in Derry (Londonderry) and had our choice of restaurants for a group dinner. We chose Browns in Town and were very pleased. We had a three course meal. I started with the crispy chicken wings with hot sauce, honey and mayonnaise, which were better than your typical wings in the States. I then had the chargrilled rump steak with Parmesan and truffle mushrooms which were amazing. One of the ladies in our group had ordered this as well and had made it quite clear she doesn't like mushrooms and I was tempted to ask if I could have hers but that seemed a little weird. For desert I had the double chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream, similar to a Pizookie like BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse has back home. My wife had he bruschetta with smoked onion marmalade with Fivemiletown goat cheese and organic salad. For the main course she had the chargrilled chicken with mini chicken pie, parsnip purée and red wine sauce. For dessert she had the Chocolate Nemesis with salted caramel, hazelnuts and vanilla ice cream. This place was a home run. We had lunch the following day at one of the other restaurants which we could have chosen for dinner the first night and that confirmed that we made the right decision. These guys catered an event I was taking part in and my god its the best catered food I think I have ever had!! Really hats off to these guys, the food was fresh, well prepped and damned tasty! Which is quite an achievement for catered food which as we all know can be a little lack luster. Not so with Browns!!! Risotto is quite spectacular and the beef melts in your mouth!! Awesome lunch. I have been for evening meals to browns in waterside and it's always been beautiful. So today I thought we would try lunch in the town. Was not disappointed. Chicken salad, House burger and peanut butter and chocolate truffle cake were so tasty. Will definitely be back and would highly recommend everyone try it. read more
