Blackbird Derry - Duck

Blackbird Derry

We were…read morelucky to land a table at Blackbird around 5:15 pm on a Friday, and from the moment we walked in, the place was alive. Every table was full, the bar was packed, and the room hummed with that unmistakable end-of-the-workweek joy. The staff were clearly in motion nonstop, yet unfailingly warm, friendly, and welcoming. It felt like locals spilling in after work to celebrate the start of the weekend--and we were happy to be swept up in it. The décor is traditional and inviting, and we felt instantly at home in the buzz. The vegetarian and vegan options are genuinely excellent. I had a perfectly crafted Old Fashioned; my companion enjoyed a Harp lager. Dinner was the Bombay Veggie Burger and the beet salad (substantial enough to be a main on its own), both beautifully done. The roasted and braised root vegetables were cooked to perfection--so tender they melted in my mouth. Live music rounded out the evening, with a talented musician performing thoughtfully arranged songs across decades. Every selection was a joy. If he had a CD of his covers, I would have bought it on the spot. A lively, welcoming pub with outstanding food, music, and atmosphere. Blackbird made our Friday night in Derry truly memorable.

We arrived a little early and were asked to wait while they prepared our table. We waited at some high tops next to the bar which were very clean and comfortable. The bar itself is very warmly lit and seems quietly intimate. Great place for a date though, in this case, we had our kids with us. Over all, the food and the service were excellent. The menu had a wide selection that would likely suit anyone's needs. We had a variety of food but I would say the stand out were the buffalo wings. As an American I can be fairly particular about my wings and I would put these up against most that I've had at home. Really, the only concern that I had was that about a half hour into dinner a group of rowdy girls were seated next to us. They were obviously out for a night on the town and I don't know that I would have sat them next to a family with small children... But again, I'm not sure that it could've been avoided. Overall one of the best dining experiences we had while in Northern Ireland and I would highly recommend it to anybody. As we visit often we will definitely be back!

Both were good but the raspberry sorbet that came with the crème brûlée was the star of the show. The staff was very friendly and kind. They all high fived the baby on our way out. Would go again!

I don't go out as much as I used to anymore but when I did, this was always my least favourite…read moreplace in town to socialize and only ever happened under the insistence of someone else. One reviewer very accurately described it as a "cattle mart". Many times I've had drinks splashed on me in the overpacked lounge floor where the music is usually amplified to the point of making it impossible to chat to whoever you're along with. I see even in their Christmas brochure, which came through my door on Friday, a pic of a guy with drink spilled down his shirt!! I never leave reviews, however this review was prompted based on the terrible experience my 18 year old niece had there recently.. She had come up from Inishown at Halloween to go to Voodoo club with a friend. After queuing for the best part of an hour in a queue that had zero crowd control and potential for people being trampled, when they got to the front of the queue some guy shouted that a girl had been sick, at which point a female bouncer with dark blond hair reached for my niece and yanked her out of the queue. Her friend politely tried to reason with the bouncer that she pulled the wrong person out at which point a male door person pushed him into the club and then refused to let him back out. My niece was left standing by herself crying in the street until a family member went into town to take her home. Baring in mind that just the week previously, a young girl had been viciously assaulted just up the street from Voodoo... It seems their policy for someone being sick is to chuck them into the street. In this case it was the wrong person that was dragged out of the queue. The amount of money and effort my niece spent getting her Halloween outfit and coming up to Letterkenny to have that type of experience disgusts me. I reached out to Voodoo via their Facebook page. No apology was offered. No acknowledgment that the staff in question would be addressed. Nothing. I suggest a change of name for the club from Voodoo to 'Bad Vibe', because that's all you'll get on a night out at this place!

Hubby & I split a platter, no longer on the menu, but offering a variety of Irish staple seafood & meats- everything was absolutely delicious- well seasoned, a great taste of Ireland mashed together Cocktails, we opted for the traditional Irish Whiskey, Irish Mule, Irish Old Fashioned- while at the time we weren't Whiskey drinkers-the high quality taste had us again changing our tune from 'just one' to 'another!' Would definitely recommend the bar- high quality drinks, delicious food, and fantastic vibe-well rounded spot.

Garlic bread is incredible though the "aioli" tasted like it was just mayo but the bread didn't need it at all. Goujons were good but the bbq sauce didn't taste bbq at all. The pepper sauce was nice though. Star here was the rotisserie chicken: fall off the bone and cooked perfectly. Again though, sauce was mid. Nothing on this menu needs a sauce (except Goujons) but they all come with them! Dishes def stand alone. All that said, the device made the meal!

I walked up the hill and there it was. Lot of people standing outside on the patio but no seats. I went in to the small bar on the lower level and a very friendly male bartender waited on me. I wandered upstairs to the second level where it was a huge space and had plenty of big screen TVs for the golf. I found the place to be very comfortable and great views of the water. The young guy at the second level bar was nice but a bit of an airhead (the drink was £11 and I handed him £20, he stood waiting for more money and ummmmmmm didn't I give you a 20? He seemed clueless about the money) We had a laugh but prob a good idea to know what the local money looks like! The top level of this place was an amazing view but it was Sunday afternoon and the bar was not open. Has more of a night feel. It's a fantastic building and I enjoyed my visit.
