Was expecting a lot more from the food. We felt that both of our fish entrees were overcooked, and the breaded goat cheese appetizer sounded much better than it tasted. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either.... Remind me of meals that I had been served when visiting relatives in retirement complex dining rooms. Maybe their meat dishes are better... Chose this restaurant for lunch on our drive from Belfast to Donegal based on reviews and it was a definite home-run!. The ambiance is quirky with colorful velvet seats and colorful decor. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was excellent. Our party of four had two of the House Club Sandwiches which were delightful, the chicken was tender, the egg was perfectly cooked, the bread was nicely toasted. The Honey & Chili Chicken was cooked perfectly, tender chicken with just the right amount of sauce and the vegetable were cooked well and very tasty with buttery goodness!. The home-run for me was the Chicken Carbonara, the Tagliatelle Pasta was cooked to perfection, just the right al dente consistency, the chicken was thinly sliced and the sauce was light and delicious. The selections were very reasonable priced for the ample amount of food. Delicious food and great service! My husband loved so much we made a one hour trip to revisit and dine a since time during our 7 day North Ireland tour. Kids loved the mushroom and chicken soup and the kids meal chicken sandwhich. Husband ate the steak, and the steak sandwhich the second time. Yelp hasn't made much of a dent so far outside of Dublin. Hotel managers literally are terrified of bad reviews on that other travel review site, but neither they nor waitstaff seem to have heard of Yelp. We've been doing our part as Yelp missionaries to try to change that! But with the help of Yelp and the other site we found Fitzroy's, and enjoyed a terrific dinner last night. For a starter Herb had potato and leek soup which, when I had a wee bit, helped warm me up from the cold, biting winds that assailed us all afternoon on our Giants Causeway trek. It was very tasty, almost as good as the homemade brown bread that accompanied it. The ubiquitous brown bread is the best we've had on our trip! For starters Herb had the Cajun Chicken, topped with goat cheese and pesto on top of sautéed veggies. He chose Champ as his side dish - a large bowl of mashed potatoes w/green onions. I tasted it and loved it My Chicken Curry came with, what else? basmati rice and naan. It was a LOT spicier than the mild the waitress said it was going tone, but not too spicy to enjoy. My side was a tossed salad, which was easily changed to lettuce instead of the rabbit food leaves that are served everywhere in Ireland, be it the Republic or Northern. Service was terrific, and I enjoyed chatting at length with our waitress. It was a great choice! read more

The pepper & chili soup appetizer was delicious as was my dinner: mushroom & toasted pine nut risotto with Parmesan & carrot puree. It's rather hard to find a place to eat supper in Derry. Not many of the pubs serve food, if any at all, and you have to hunt down actual restaurants to find anything to eat. I followed Yelp reviews to this place and was not disappointed. Firstly, the food wasn't overpriced, and they took an additional 30% off your bill just for coming in. The food was decent, and they were open on Sundays, which was great for a traveler just arriving into town. The service was good, and the waiter talked with us about America once she figured out where we were from. I don't think Derry is too crowded with tourists yet. It's a good place to stop and try! Fitzroy's looks a lot smaller than it actually is. You go inside and there's a long bar on the right and seating to the right, but if you go to the back and up the stairs there is even more seating. Very little wait to be seated and we got a lovely big booth. The restaurant was very busy which is great to see. Really pleasant, helpful staff and nice food. Not the most exciting of menus, but we were given very generous portions, the food was fresh, well prepared and well presented, and it was excellent value for money. There was 30% off our bill which meant our two mains and two soft drinks came to less than £20! Have I mentioned the staff were really lovely? Also free WiFi! read more

I can't comment too much as it was very much a flying visit to this restaurant as I had a train to catch. From what I did experience though, the staff are great, the atmosphere is fantastic and the food was beautiful. I had the goujons and sour cream and chilli chips. Really couldn't complain about any of it. Sadly that's all I can say though as it was such a quick stop. Must mention that it's 50% off the food on Monday and Tuesday. Definitely a bargain. I'm giving this place five stars. Yes. This is a great place. We had no idea though that Mondays and Tuesdays were half price all food and drinks. Seriously who does that. Doing that sure packs em in though. We didn't have a reservation which I would highly suggest on one of these half price nights because we had to wait an hour for a table. From the outside, it looks like a little dive and possibly not much seating, but there are three levels of seating and the sign on the front says it seats over 100. All the locals seemed to know you had to make a reservation. Anyway, everything was good. The service and the food. I had the Guinness steak pie and my wife had a Cesar Salad and garlic bread. For desert we had the toffee pudding (not sure what it was, but it was delicious). I took a picture of it half after we ate it. With all the folks inside, I'm not really sure where they all parked. I parked right down the street from there about 50 meters down the hill. If you are coming to Derry for the first time, I highly recommend this place and that you call to make a reservation or you make one while you are walking around the city that day. I've found that I've had to ask for the check in all the places I've been in Northern Ireland. I guess this is just customary or they are used to people staying there all night drinking not sure which. Anyway, after you get it you pay on the way out and leave your tip there too. All tips are the end of the night are divided among the servers unless you can sneak a tip to your server :) We did! Did I mention the free wifi. Not sure how I am able to live without it. read more

We were visiting from the US, and had one night in Derry. Chose this based on the previous yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. The service was great. Our waitress did forget my drink earlier at the beginning but made up for it by helping us out later in the night. As for the food, I had the beef and stout pie- delicious. The beef was tender, the gravy flavorful and the topping flaky. The side of mashed peas weren't my favorite but not bed either. My husband had the lamb shank which he said was great. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere (though the background music can be a little loud and is usually modern club music). The service is exceptional. The wait staff is also moving around but doing so unobtrusively. We spilled a pint of mostly full Guinness. Two servers immediately grab towels, cleaned it, order a fresh beer, and had us reseated in 2 minutes. The steak and Guinness pie is served with a flaky roll which you crumble to make the "pie" top - steak and mushrooms in a rich Guinness sauce. The chili fries are seriously spicy - a heat that's more than your Taco Bell hot sauce. When we went, all food AND drink was 30% off which makes this good restaurant an outstanding value. read more
