Our lunch in Browns in Town was a feast that probably could have tied us over until the next day…read more The meal was so filling that I felt I would need a wheelbarrow to be led away. But the food we ordered was worth feeling so full because it was wicked good. Located on Strand Road in downtown Derry, outside the City Walls, Browns in Town has a modern interior with brown wood walls in the primary dining area and a little postmodern-styled lounge in the front entrance. The vibes are fairly relaxed where you don't feel you have to dress up outside of jeans and a shirt to enjoy a meal. The food per our experience is certainly that of comfort and quality. One aspect my wife and I loved about Browns in Town, and many of the restaurants we visited in Northern Ireland and the Republic, is that on the menu we know which dishes are celiac friendly or have a celiac option, and note all the allergens present -- e.g., gluten, shellfish, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. My wife is celiac, so this allowed us to choose this restaurant since it offers many gluten-free options -- and not just salad. Both of us ordered the local seafood chowder (I had the gluten version, while she had the celiac option), which was creamy, buttery, and delicious, loaded with a variety of seafood caught in the area and served with homemade bread. The Mushroom & Black Garlic Risotto was out of this world, with the pine nuts and parmesan providing a nice balance with primary ingredients -- also luscious and rich. The chefs cooked the risotto to perfection. I probably was fine just ordering that, as the black garlic chips (fries to us Americans) were overkill, but I couldn't help myself being at a restaurant for the first time in a city I have never visited before. My wife had the beer-battered cod in the gluten-free option and incredibly tasty, especially when combined with the mushy peas and tartar sauce. We didn't even attempt to order dessert because we were full to the point of being in a food coma. Fortunately, we had a lot of walking around ahead of us, which helped work off our meal a little. But I would absolutely return to enjoy some of the other fares they have on the menu.

Food was so high quality and delicious. My pork was cooked perfectly which is a difficult thing to…read moredo.

The towns we passed from Donegal to Castelderg didn't even have a coffee shop open after 4pm (its…read moreoff season right now) We were wondering if we would even get anything to eat in Castelderg - our halt for the night. My stomach is rebelling at the fried, cheesy, potato and bread overload from pub style food. When we reached Castelderg, all we could see were takeaway places that didn't even have a chair to sit on, forget a table. We weren't sure how our B&B would feel about us bringing a takeaway to eat in their dining room (I can't abide the smell of food in the bedroom). Then we suddenly saw this sit down place. We weren't even sure from the lighting if it was open. But we parked and they said they were serving dinner. The menu looked standard, but we were just grateful for a quiet place to sit down and eat. What followed has to be the biggest surprise of this trip foodwise. Red Pepper restaurant served us Michelin quality food, that people would queue up for hours in London! We started with a duck liver pate and a vegetable soup. I ordered a grilled chicken main and we had creme brûlée and vanilla pannacotta for dessert. He asked for a large whisky with hot water, they recommended adding cloves and lemon (free Irish warming cocktail upgrade alert) The bill for all of this was 29£ Yes Twenty Nine Pounds only. The quality, the presentation and the fantastically friendly service! Colin & Marie are doing everything right!

Bar Retro, while being super stylish, does it in a way that it still fits in with the picture perfect traditional surroundings in Hillsborough. Aside from the Bistro, Bar Retro also comprises a modern cocktail lounge, club, and café. I had a two course lunch (unplanned) because upon viewing their menu, I was delighted to see that they did flatbreads with hummus as a starter. If you know me, you will know that I could absolutely live on the stuff, and it's not often you see it on a menu, so it would be a shame not to seize the opportunity when it presents itself! For my 'main' dish, I had the chicken with feta and olive salad, which was absolute perfection. There are so many other things I am dying to try here, and with the prices so reasonable, I will definitely be back!

Went here for my birthday and made a reservation for the bar retro bistro. We arrived and were…read moredirected to bar retro cafe where they had mistakenly booked us in for. We were not escorted to our table and it was sticky and untidy on arrival. We complained that we had not booked in for the cafe and so they eventually found us a table half an hour after we had arrived. There were very long waits for the main course and the dessert. The food was nice enough but to be honest you can get similar meals elsewhere plus better service. We ordered an Americano at the end and were given a filter coffee - we asked whether it was an Americano and the waitress said it was an "Americano Filter"... enough said. We were charged full price for the whole meal without anything taken off for the hassle and all the waiting. To conclude, do not bother going here. I'd recommend one of the other restaurants in Hillsborough if you are trying to decide where to eat because there's no way that their service could be any worse than this place! For the price you are paying I expect high service and good food!!!
