The Walled City Brewery - Cauliflower steak : De-Lish-Ous!

The Walled City Brewery

During our stay, Monday - Thursday they are only open for a small window between 5-8:30pm. We decided not to go the brewery tour, so I can't comment on if it is worthwhile, but I think I would try doing it next time if we ever were to go back to Derry.  The brewery has a full restaurant which has fantastic reviews and was also recommended by our friend who has gone before. We weren't hungry yet for dinner, so we opted to just visit the Taproom. The Taproom is also very cool and has a great vibe with interesting artwork. What we really liked about this brewery was it felt like a craft brewery and offered a lot of variety in their beers. It was the first place that we found that offered a sour beer, they had a wit beer, and they even had a hard seltzer (which honestly wasn't very good unless you like gin drinks). We enjoyed a few drinks and the music for a hour or so before deciding on dinner.

4.5 stars for lunch w/ brew…read more I got the Cauliflower Steak at 12€ and a taster set of 3 brews (the Boom, Punt Purse, and the IPA 2.3%). The Cauliflower Steak was absolutely delicious with some fantastic flavors to it, and thankfully it was NOT greasy (unlike some other places I ordered cauliflower in the UK). I would highly recommend this dish. As for my taster set, the Punt Purse and 2.3% IPA were both fine, but it was "the Boom" that stole the show in my opinion....I should've just gotten a pint of that. The only negative was our server, who didn't seem into his job at all. The attention he gave us was all quite perfunctory....maybe he was just having an off day because he had something serious on his mind that day, but if not, he might consider looking for a position other than a server (since he clearly didn't seem to be into it).

Brown's Bar - Scallop appetizer

Yelp needs a 10 star option simply to appropriately rate this place…read more First of all, they were very accommodating with vegetarian requests. Second of all, every. single. thing. was. amazing. My taste buds have never been so happy. I wish I could remember the names of everything but all I remember is feeling pure joy. Third of all, they provide top of the line customer service. It was an intimate setting and we ended up chatting quite a bit with the folks beside us, another plus to the night! I am dying to return to Ireland for a few reasons but Browns is at the top of the list!!

The cocktails were not super creative, but I did enjoy my Ian Orr and my husband liked the traditional old fashioned. The apps were the star of the night - i got the cauliflower & truffle soup which is by far the most velvety delicious cauliflower soup I've ever had. My husband got the scallops and miso pork belly which was also quite flavorful. Scallops were cleaned well and were fresh which is a must for scallops imo. If I had a do over I would have gotten it for my main or another bowl of cauliflower because it was soooo good. The entrées for us were just so so. The Inishowen grass fed beef was prepared well and the sauce was good, but it didn't blow us away. The croquette wasn't very flavorful. We did like the beef better than the fish of the day. Fish was not impressive and the ratatouille did not seem like the best complement for the bland fish. The ravioli was good, so probably needed a couple more of those. All in all, it was a good meal but a little pricey for the experience. We've had better thought out meals for around the same price. Parking can be a challenge as it's locked in at the end of a street.

Between its hip interior…read moredesign of its second-floor dining area and excellent cuisine options, this Spanish-influenced restaurant has everything you could want (especially if you need gluten-free options). The restaurant is in this stone-built building with an old-school spiral staircase that spirals up to multiple floors. If I recall, there's also a private room for special events and trivia on the first floor. When we arrived at the second floor, there was purple lighting before the set of double doors that led you into the dining area. Upon entering, the sophisticated design of the dining room comprised oval chairs and tables with some booth seating to the left with a stylish bar and lounge to the right. Grabbing a table with our reservation (recommended), we started with cocktails, such as the Sour and Bramble -- very tasty and refreshing that brought us to a place of spiritual oneness and understanding for the mixology universe. We enjoyed some lovely charcuterie comprising Iberico Serrano ham and some distinctive cheeses that I can't find back here in the states. My wife enjoyed the sea bass while I dined on the rotisserie half chicken potato and manchego terrine, BBQ cabbage, and green peppercorn au jus. I also went for the indulgence and ordered some aioli fries and new boiled potatoes. When the time arrives to return to Derry, we will return to Entrada. This magical place will satisfy the senses into a place of spiritual serenity and superbness.

But the food we ordered was worth feeling so full because it was wicked good. Located on Strand Road in downtown Derry, outside the City Walls, Browns in Town has a modern interior with brown wood walls in the primary dining area and a little postmodern-styled lounge in the front entrance. The vibes are fairly relaxed where you don't feel you have to dress up outside of jeans and a shirt to enjoy a meal. The food per our experience is certainly that of comfort and quality. One aspect my wife and I loved about Browns in Town, and many of the restaurants we visited in Northern Ireland and the Republic, is that on the menu we know which dishes are celiac friendly or have a celiac option, and note all the allergens present -- e.g., gluten, shellfish, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. My wife is celiac, so this allowed us to choose this restaurant since it offers many gluten-free options -- and not just salad. Both of us ordered the local seafood chowder (I had the gluten version, while she had the celiac option), which was creamy, buttery, and delicious, loaded with a variety of seafood caught in the area and served with homemade bread. The Mushroom & Black Garlic Risotto was out of this world, with the pine nuts and parmesan providing a nice balance with primary ingredients -- also luscious and rich. The chefs cooked the risotto to perfection. I probably was fine just ordering that, as the black garlic chips (fries to us Americans) were overkill, but I couldn't help myself being at a restaurant for the first time in a city I have never visited before. My wife had the beer-battered cod in the gluten-free option and incredibly tasty, especially when combined with the mushy peas and tartar sauce. We didn't even attempt to order dessert because we were full to the point of being in a food coma. Fortunately, we had a lot of walking around ahead of us, which helped work off our meal a little. But I would absolutely return to enjoy some of the other fares they have on the menu.

Food was so high quality and delicious. My pork was cooked perfectly which is a difficult thing to…read moredo.
