Wonderful experience in all directions - biological dentistry at its best! After some years away, I'm back in Austin and finally got to go see Dr. Sefcik again, this time for an issue that I'd been literally waiting for years to see her about: about 1/4 of a molar broke off due to a stone in my cereal! Broken teeth and tartar definitely benefit from professional care, plus it was time for some fresh digital xrays to check on my jaw. Dr. Joan's new office is a lovely space, the treatment areas have mango yellow painted walls and matching colored chairs - plus various paintings of hummingbirds and wildflower fields by Shakti Sarkin. More like a spa space than a scary lab! The patient paperwork is an LLC partnership agreement - a smart way to run a sustainable practice in this world, and technically you become a member in the partnership. The hygiene chair spaces are gorgeous, and the dental work space I was in had a huge window looking out to a creek and trees - very calming. The front desk manager is very professional and welcoming, and I instantly felt relaxed and cosy - despite the "Covid Madness" in the outside world. It was nice to be in a place where I could take off my mask and relax, based on the scientific evidence (I have a condition that makes breathing with masks difficult and thus makes challenging situations more challenging...) I noticed another client kept their mask on when not in treatment, and that was fine too. Live and let live. It was also nice to know that the hygiene practices at this office are stellar - filtered water in all the dental machines, for starters. I was first seen by hygienist Brittany, an amazing gal who uses ultrasonic tools that effective remove tartar without harming your gum nerves (or leaving you with a terrible jawache for days, which happened to me last time I had a deep cleaning with conventional tools). Digital x-rays went great too (I have a small jaw and I hate those mouth inserts, but Brittany understood the issues and facilitated expertly). As I follow a biological regimen (antibacterial essential oils diluted in a carrier oil for brushing + calc. bentonite polishing) and I'm a low-sugar/starch person, x-rays showed no decay, even though it had been 7 years since I'd been to a dentist!!! Dr. Joan and Dental Assistant Seemi worked at least an hour on me to create and install the temporary cap. The numbing shots went fine and worked completely. The tools were plentiful, the machine noises were spectacular, mixed with chatting and laughter. I mostly kept my eyes closed! I felt like I was, again, in very good hands. Later that evening I had no lingering anesthesia weirdness and no aching, fabulous! Soon I will go in again to get my permanent cap put on, and I have to say, part of me is actually looking forward to it... even though it's dentistry!!! read more

If this review were just based on the dentistry work alone, 5 stars! Joan and her dental staff are great and I loved my experiences with them for mercury removal, a new mouthguard, and follow ups. They were very thorough, kind, and informative throughout the process. Additionally, they clearly have a lot of fun working together and it felt like a very positive working environment. I enjoyed listening to them as they worked! However, I look at the business as a whole and actually put off writing this review because I wanted to keep giving their front desk operator "another chance" in case I caught her on an off day, but after 3 billing mistakes (that I had to double check and correct) that resulted from her either not calling my insurance to confirm my plan or sending the wrong billing codes (twice) amounted to $1000+ in bills that I had to spend time and energy correcting between her and my insurance agent, multiple failures to call me back to schedule appointments or correct her billing errors, the loss of pre-quote insurance statements..... I can't put this off any longer. If it were up to the front desk alone, this review would be 1 star (if even), so I'm meeting in the middle here trying to be fair.....because Joan is great and deserves fairness! After my first consultation and before my first appointment, I was told this front desk liaison would send the information they gave me about my fillings to my insurance company to get an official quote from them. I called my insurance company 3 weeks later after being told by the front desk liaison that "they must be really slow. I sent those weeks ago" only to hear they still hadn't received ANY information from the dental office. After my second call to this woman, she said "I'll check with them again for an update". I then get an email from my insurance company 10 minutes later that says "your estimate request has been received"! (Aka, never sent previously). I then had the quote back within a few days... I chalked this up to a potential glitch (maybe it didn't process for some reason the first time?).... except it happened again months later with a different estimate and at that point... it looked more like I was being lied to by someone trying to CYA. The first time I came in for my actual appointment I had the dental estimates already completed knowing exactly how much I'd be required to pay as an in-network "elective" procedure (mercury filling removal). I knew there would be +/- costs here and there, but I received a bill from the front desk for about $1.5k more than I was quoted. When I asked about it, the front desk said it was "doctor fees", but, we discussed that those fees hadn't applied to me because I was a Delta Premier insurance carrier. She didn't realize I was a Delta Premier carrier even though I'd sent her the documentation on 2 separate occasions alongside an insurance quote (that was lost). If she's been in contact with my insurance like she'd said... how could she have not known my plan? She said "she would look into it and see what they can do". I never got a call back, just a new bill almost a month later where it was written "we decided to waive those fees for you" as if it were a favor, except again, that is part of the agreement as a Dental Premier patient.... it felt like it was presented to me as doing me a favor instead of admitting a mistake. Again, I'm a people pleaser and still wanted to give the benefit of the doubt and ultimately came in for 4 appointments over the course of a year. With each appointment, there was some sort of billing mistake, insurance mistake, and/or difficulty getting the appointment booked due to callbacks. While this front desk lady is nice and has a great relationship with the staff, she is too disorganized for my liking. I can't continue to spend more time fixing her errors and calling to ensure that she has done what she said she would do. It is exhausting. At this point, I'm frustrated because there are very few biological dentists in Austin and I REALLY love Joan!!! If they have a change at the front desk, I will be back. I still recommend you check them out because the dentist and hygienists are great. I'm so happy that my mercury fillings are gone. Maybe I coincidentally caught the front desk lady on EVERY bad day? Sad to have to update my previous glowing review, but I'd look for another bio dentist. My pulled tooth & bridge were very poorly done (bad fit that allows food to get in & is extremely hard to clean), painful (numbness kept wearing off) & the temporary bridge broke or came off numerous times, plus the bridge took forever to come in & I got a runaround on when it was due in for months after I unfortunately paid in advance. Nothing to be done - I'm never going back. The staff here is not at all for the patient or straightforward & the dentist was the same, that's the nicest way I can say it. Sad. read more

I spent a lot of money with her having my mercury fillings removed. She insisted on redoing an old cap she said was done wrong, and it was a total nightmare. It took more than six weeks for the cap to come in and the temporary they gave me fell off multiple times. Then I had to go in 3 more times to keep having the cap ground down because they couldn't get it right. Now less than two years later, another dentist is saying the cap was still done wrong and needs to be redone again. Also two of the other fillings she did broke and need to be redone as well. Plus her receptionist is super rude. Stay away! read more

Please steer clear of this practice. I really wanted to like this holistic practice but my experience has led me to seek out a different dentist to try and fix what Joan Sefcik did wrong. I had an old mercury filling removed several months ago here. My molar was fine prior to this filling removal but I wanted to get the mercury out so decided to go ahead with the procedure. I had pretty bad pain after the procedure which I understood tends to be normal , but when the pain continued and I couldn't chew on that side of my mouth without it hurting, I returned and was told that all I needed was a bite adjustment. I was really hoping that was the case so I got the bite adjustment done. After a month or so of continued pain because this did not solve the issue, I had to take time off work again to return for another appointment to get a second bite adjustment done for this molar. I'm skipping over many details that felt like red flags, but when I was speaking with Dr Joan about my tooth still hurting when I chewed on that side she jokingly asked "well what are you eating?" as if it was my fault that my tooth was hurting? When I told her my tooth never gave me issues prior to the new filling she said it was because it's my 6-years-old molar and I'll likely need a root canal. My molar still hurts (it's been since Feb. I believe) and I'll now have to seek out a different dentist to try and fix the issue. I can't trust this practice with my oral health and it just doesn't sit right with me to be treated disrespectfully when you're already in pain due to something they did poorly. I'm really sad to have to leave a negative review for any biological dentist since I truly believe in this kind of dentistry. However, I feel obligated to share my personal experience. First, I had veneers put in on my two front teeth over 10 months ago and ever since, I still experience extreme sensitivity to heat and cold. In addition, no one told me I should whiten my teeth before getting the veneers until I went in to get them put in. They assumed I should've known even though this was my first time ever getting a veneer and that should not be something the client should know. I believe they took off too much enamel in my two front teeth so I'm going to another dentist to see what they can do. My biggest complaint is that I had a cracked crown that needed to be replaced. During the procedure there was something clearly wrong and I kept telling them over and over and over that I could feel everything. They gave me 3 additional shots to numb it and I said it's not working that I feel like I'm going to pass out from the pain. I suffered for almost 4 hours with excruciating pain and no one ever realized that the reason I was in so much pain was because my tooth was cracked. So they basically put a crown over a cracked tooth. Less than a week later I said I still had pain. Long story short, I came in 5 different times with the same complaint and all they did was to keep adjusting my bite! No one ever thought that maybe they should take an x-ray to see if something was wrong, especially when I was getting the crown put on and was in so much pain. This experience gave me PTSD to the point where I asked for Dr. Joan to call me back before coming in for another adjustment. When she called me back I answered the phone and it was silent...finally I said Dr. Joan? Her response had zero empathy to my concern about the pain and as it turns out I ended up getting a major sinus and tooth infection from this. Since I had zero faith in this place I went somewhere else and had an amazing experience. They ended up pulling out the tooth and I had to get an implant put in. I feel like I should get a refund the $1500 crown they charged me to put on a cracked tooth that ended up in a huge complicated infection that caused me so much pain and grief I still get anxiety now every-time I go to the dentist. This is my personal experience and I hope I'm one of the few that had to go through this but I will never go back to this place and I'm currently looking for a new biological dentist in the Austin area. read more

Terrible, horrible, disgusting experience... Our family used Joan for 20+ years, I remember being in the "kids waiting room" playing Sega while my folks were getting work done. Fast forward to 2019, my younger brother had a very botched dental job. Cracked tooth, Joan capped it poorly and it lead to an infection that required surgery and about a quarter sized piece of his jaw removed, 3 teeth removed and he's 20 at the time. He's still going through surgery. Infection was allowed to grow because these incredible professionals made the conscious decision to not x-ray the tooth a single time after capping it, over 10 years without looking into the tooth that they capped. Fool me once, right? Decide to hop over to a new dentist for a second opinion, they conducted this really new age medical procedure on me called an X-Ray. Boom, 13 cavities that I had zero idea were there. I had to have so much dental work done that my teeth aren't my teeth anymore. Here's where it get's hairy... Joan claims that we "opted out of x-ray's," I never opted out of X-Rays, I'm fairly certain that my insurance provider requires a document stating that I opted out of x-rays, a document that I have yet to see! Then it turns from me opting out of x-ray's to my guardian opting me out of x-ray's.. Our guardian didn't opt us out plus they couldn't legally have a guardian opt me out of X-Rays as I was seeing this dentist while I was between the ages of 18 and 25. Joan took my brothers negative google review and turn it into a selling pitch for their practice: "As a biological practice, we take a conservative, prevention-based approach to patient care, which is one of the things our patients value about our practice." I've worked sales for years, that's a pitch if I've ever seen one... Supposedly they're a mask free establishment now citing an employee with a "medical exemption," not here to get in a mask debate and I really couldn't care less what people's opinions are on masks. Allow me to keep it simple for Joan, if the 80 year old HEB employee with asthma (mEdIcAl ExEmPtIoN) checking my groceries needs to wear a mask, your salaried employees who work in the medical field need to wear a mask. Look, I'm not dogging holistic medicine or holistic dentistry, but there is a standard that dental professionals HAVE to live up to. This shop isn't living up to it. PS, their hygienist tried to sell me her book every single time that I was in there. I sincerely doubt that holistic dentistry is top of mind. read more

Highly unprofessional behavior- wow, Hard to believe I'm writing this bc the staff and Dr were so nice throughout -until it was demonstrated that she didn't have the capacity to deliver on a promise for creating replacement teeth for me, after 6 weeks and an $1100+ deposit, no one is returning my calls and I am being completely ignored! Lots of 5 star reviews, but Strange behavior as of late,,and way too busy to take on new patients or deal with the current ones. Sorry to say I'll be looking elsewhere and suggest to anyone else to do the same. She didn't even have the time nor professionalism to reconcile the situation, very sad indeed. I made a Yelp account just so I can make sure people see this. THIS DENTIST IS A FRAUD. SHE IS SELLING SNAKE OIL. Please choose a different dentist. Due to reasons unbeknownst to me or my family, they decided to stop taking x rays on my jaw. A tooth they had done a botched operation on years ago was infected. The infection grew so large that it ate away at my jaw. I required a massive bone graft, along with several other follow up surgeries. If they had been doing their due diligence as dental professionals, they would have taken x rays and done some preventative dentistry. In other words, they would do what you pay them to do. The icing on the cake for me was when I switched dentists, they discovered I had 11 cavities. ELEVEN. My brother had 13 himself. Absolutely ridiculous. They are not practicing dentistry, they are looking at your teeth and saying everything is fine. First they do that, then they sell you their fake news about alternative medicine. They literally will play a documentary called "The Root Cause" in their waiting room. You should ask your dental care professional about that documentary... I didn't write a review for years because I figured live and let live. However, I discovered she allows patients with "medical exemptions" to not wear mask. Take that as you will... but I find that kind of behavior to be appalling from a medical professional. Thousands of Americans are dying everyday from this virus, yet some people live in denial. If you want a dentist who 1. plays Alex Jones in her office loud enough for her patients to hear 2. Takes wholistic medicine to such an extreme that she won't prescribe antibiotics 3. She hasn't ever made me feel anything other than aware. One bio dentist in Austin didn't want to see me after my cleaning because I hadn't had them removed. But Dr. Sefcik explained the minimally invasive procedure for me and next thing I know I was done! I absolutely love my lips! I saw a difference right away and it wasn't drastic, but perfect. For many years, I had to be so sedated before I could even get into the chair of a dentist, I was nearly comatose. After being a patient of Dr. Sefcik's I eventually got to the point where I didn't need any Valium at all - even for a filling. Joan's staff is amazing also. I have been going to Dr. Sefcik for about 11 years and she is the best! I hate dental work a lot and unfortunately I have been cursed with bad genes and have needed quite a bit of work done. I don't think I have ever felt pain and I have always felt relaxed. The office is all women and they are all so nice. They give you headphones if you want them and the office is nothing like a dental office. It is mostly decorated with an Egyptian theme and there is always calming music in the background. I really can't say enough about how awesome everyone there is. I really dread going to the dentist but at least with her I don't feel the need to medicate myself just to get there. read more

Not only is she knowledgeable and thorough, but she and her staff have great, positive, outgoing attitudes that make going to the dentist as much of an enjoyable experience as possible. This was my very first time to choose my own dentist (before I just went to whoever my parents used), and, thanks to yelp, I found exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a holistic, fluoride-free dentist/dental hygienist who understood that the mouth is one of the most important indicators of one's overall health. Came highly recommended by friends, but when I called to make an appointment for a cleaning, she asserted that they don't do cleanings on the first appointment, fast-talked explained what they do. I explained that I didn't think that would work because we live 90 minutes away and is not logistically doable, and rather than say something like, "I'm sorry to hear that," or "I understand," She said smugly, "That's fine" and laughed at me.
