Please read this before having this company do any work for you. I need to provide you with all the details, so please read till the end. We contracted with JMD in June 2021 for our patio and walkway around the side of the house. Their communication was not the best as they just showed up, but they were professional and did a great job. The job was little more expensive than the original quote, but we asked them for a few more things, so we were good there. Overall, it was a good experience. Fast Forward to Thursday March 3, 2022. I get a knock on my door at 10:30 am with the owner's son, John saying that we are due a refund because of a tax break that they must pass on to their customers. I say great, but I can't talk now as I am running to a meeting (I work out of the house). I get his number and tell him I will call back when I can. On Saturday 3/5, the owner's again pulls up to my house unexpected in the morning as I am taking my son to an event at his school. He says he needs me to pay him 1,900 up front and then he will give me back 4,783.04 that we are due. At this point, I am skeptical, so I dismiss him and say that I will call him. I call him the next day and I tell him to come to my house on Monday, 3/7 to discuss. We met on Monday, 3/7 at 6pm (It recorded on the cameras in my house). He tells me that their books are messed up because of the work they did in my backyard. He explains that since his grandfather (it's a family business) did some work for us without a proper invoice that their books are messed up. We push back because it does not make sense to us that we must pay him for us to get our tax break, but he explains further that his father and grandfather had a big fight about how the job they did for us was charged and that there are tax implications and now the company is at risk of going out of business. I ask why can't speak with your father and he says that his dad wants him to take care of this. I then asked to talk with his grandfather, and he said he was in Ireland at a funeral. At this point I am still skeptical, but I explain to him that we live paycheck to paycheck, and I can't write a check for 1,900 right now. He then threatens to get lawyers involved, so at this point I cut the conversation short, and he left. After thinking about it that night, my wife and I decided to write him a check and give it to him on 3/17 when I got paid. I trusted them and I trusted him. We figured it was legit and we could use the extra money. They seemed like a good family company, I had no reason to doubt him and he said that he was an Irish catholic and would never lie to us. I called him on 3/9 and advised him that we would give him a check. I asked for a contract and for it to put in writing what we were laying out and what we would be getting paid. At this point I regret not calling their actual office. The check we wrote on 3/17 for 1,900 was cashed within the hour. On 3/24 I reached out to John to see when we would be seeing him with the rest of funds, he and JMD promised back to us. He advised that the office would be calling me that day. That day passed with no phone call. On Friday 3/25 my wife and I both reached out again. We were given the runaround. On Saturday, 3/26 my wife called their actual office and left a message asking them what was going on. The actual owner of the company (I think) called us back and he had no clue what we were talking about. It was a complete shock to him. My wife and I are now livid. He promised to come to our house and give us back the 1,900. Turns out his son was trying to con us. Everything was a lie. He was trying to get money for God knows what. The owner had his son give us our money back and he never even came in to apologize, nor did the son. The amount of stress this caused my family can not be overstated. We are on a very tight budget and losing this money would have financially crippled us. We should have known it was a scam and I am too trusting, but the fact that there was not a big apology for this is appalling. Especially since they are apparently a big construction company. Please be careful when dealing with them and I would advise to never give them money up front. Also, make sure you deal directly with one of the owners. read more
