My children are only 4 years old and are still learning English. I do not understand why I am not allowed to see what is happening during the class. As a parent, I believe I should be able to observe my young children, especially when they are in a new environment. If space is limited, the facility should find a way to accommodate parents rather than completely preventing them from watching. I find this policy unreasonable and disappointing.

Okaigan Karate has been one of the best things we could have done for our daughter…read more Before we began there, our daughter, still 4 at the time, would struggle to be in activities on her own without one of us there by her side at all times. When we began Okaigan, we were hesitant about the policy where no parents are allowed inside the dojo during class times but the instructors explained to us very clearly that doing so would not only be a distraction to our daughter and other students but would also prevent her from developing confidence and independence. They were very helpful and clear in explaining what happens in class, what we could expect as far as the challenge for our daughter in being on her own, and ways they work with the kids to help comfort them. Within a few classes, our daughter was not only comfortable in her karate classes but to our surprise, in ALL of her other activities. We no longer had to sit by her side and watched over the next few months as her confidence and independence grew. It's been a year now and she loves her karate classes. She works hard for every belt and they're not definitely not bought or given to them. It's clear they have to be earned. She loves the instructors there, we're amazed by how much she has developed over this time, and it tells us a lot that out of all of her activities, karate is the only one that she has wanted to keep pursuing consistently.

On the other hand, no churros here. Over the past year, my daughter has already went thru different levels of belts. From White, Yellow, Orange, and now Green. While some will say that's a testament to her persistence and hard work (and I agree), I also give credit to the level of teaching at JTC. The instructors not only teach discipline and good technique, but also do so by having fun with the kids. Lots of kids start here at a very young age, maybe 4 or 5. I can understand that some of them might be a little intimidated by the sternness and decibel level of the instruction here. But, with a few hugs here, and some words of encouragement there, after a session or two, it won't be a problem anymore. Trust me, I speak from experience. My daughter even cried the first time. By the 3rd session, she was a pro. Like I said, the instructors are great. Besides teaching them discipline and form and such, they also help them with life in general. For instance, they help them memorize certain information that they will need in their young lives such as parents and grandparents birthdays and contact information. Also, they teach them "home rules" which pertain to being a good person when at home (i.e. being respectful and keeping things in order). When testing, while they are in a big group testing (and by belt color at times), there are times when they will ask a certain question or perform a certain move all by themselves. This encourages public speaking and being independent. There are stools inside the facility if you want to watch the class for the day. They probably won't accommodate all the parents, but not all parents will stay anyway. Some will drop them off during the 45-minute class. Partly because maybe they have other parental things they need to do, but also because the parking situation leaves something to be desired. It shares parking with Kumon, a music teaching facility, and a hair salon. Be careful not to park in the hair salon's parking spaces. The lady will chase after you with a curling iron, hair dryer, or hairbrush if you do! #kiddingnotkidding While Master Jung Woo Soo isn't always in the building he does come in from time to time. With his pony tail, he may look intimidating, but he loves the kids and the kids love him. Parents like him, too! LOL! When he isn't there, Mrs. Kim runs the show! She is awesome! She is equally as good with the kids and even better with the parents. She is always nice and polite and always seems to be smiling! When she's not handling the day-to-day operations, she is out on the floor helping the kids be the best that they can be. TLDR: Great place to learn Taekwondo and other things. But bring running shoes in case you park in the wrong spot.

He has done swimming lessons, soccer, and Tball. This is the first and only activity that he wants to practice at home, participate in a camp, etc. I attribute this both to his natural inclination towards a martial art AND the wonderful instructors at JTC. Mr. Evon is especially kind, fun and respectful. My son looks up to him and enjoys talking with him and asking questions about Tae Kwondo. Also, when my oldest son first started, his little brother did a trial class as well. While he is still too little to fully participate, the teachers have always made him feel welcome and included, and he never feels left out - which he does with most other "older kid" sports he watches his brother play. It has been a great experience for our whole family!

We have two kids studying under Master Zhao and have been fortunate to be part of this amazing…read moreschool for over two years. Master Zhao's love for kung fu and teaching makes his classes fantastic learning experience. He loves kids and somehow manages to maintain that magic balance of discipline/authority and encouragement that strikes the right cord with our kids: they see him as a huge authority yet are not intimidated and look forward to their classes. Master Zhao knows every student by name and cares about his students. One of our kids changed school and ended up in a toxic environment that impacted his kung fu. Master Zhao and Sylvia noticed the new unusual behavior and talked to us on a number of occasions to make sure our son was ok. The classes and levels (belts) are structured such that we can see month by month how much stronger, more agile and skilled our kids are becoming. A mix of different levels is very beneficial for the less experienced students as no belts aspire to the while belts, yellow belts get excited about advancing their skills to be able to do what purple belts can do, etc. The belts are earned, Master Zhao holds the bar and doesn't lower it. So when kids earn their belts, they feel very proud because it is a big achievement. We also really like the camaraderie and friendly environment in this school. Both Master Zhao's and Sylvia are kind, patient and respectful. And that vibe absolutely transfers to the students. More skilled students can help less experienced ones, which creates great learning opportunities for both sides. Lastly, Master Zhao's summer camps are truly wonderful. Kids learn weapons, play games and just have a great time. We were really impressed how much they can learn in a week. We feel incredibly fortunate that our kids can learn from a teacher of such a caliber, coming from the centuries of the best in the world traditions.
