I enrolled my 6 year-old daughter in the spring break dance & gymnastics camp- only did 2 days so far and I've already decided we won't be back. For starters, there was no communication. When I still hadn't heard anything 1 day prior to camp start about what to bring or pack with regards to snacks/lunch, what to wear, how pickup/dropoff works, etc., I finally just emailed them to ask (and got a marginally helpful- and not very friendly- response in return like I was inconveniencing them by asking). The front desk staff weren't particularly friendly in person either. Also the "coaches" (or whatever you call them) just seemed like a bunch of tired, uninterested teenagers there for a seasonal job. Lots of piercings and tats-- not the picture of professionalism. Not sure who has the expertise here, but this certainly wasn't on display in spring break camp, so not sure why I would pay money to enroll my daughter here on a regular basis during the year. I didn't get the sense that my daughter was doing anything structured here outside of "free play", and the place just seems to be lacking structure/organization in general. We'll find somewhere else.

I do not recommend the dance studio-the price tag is higher than any other studio in the area, the…read moreleadership is chronically unstable, and there's no transparency. The gymnastics and tumbling program is excellent, and well-respected. First, the cost per one hour of dance is a little over $100 per month. This studio does not provide pre-professional training-the owner has stated multiple times that her studio is "strictly recreational" but the price tag is higher than at Dance Depot, which is $80/hour for a month, and offers pre-professional training. There is also no "cap off" point with regards to cost per class-at most studios in the area, when your student's enrollment reaches some number of classes per week, additional classes are at no cost, because the dance program owner wants dancers to be in the studio getting better. There are a few pathways to a lower cost per class, one of which is that the student can work as a class assistant, gymnastics or tumbling coach, or with the cheer program, but that student will have to work 100 hours without any pay. But the students do receive a reduced rate for tuition. There are also leadership issues. Many of the other dance studios in southeastern PA-Dance Depot, Rising Star, Visions, Let's Get Dancing, PADA, Pottstown Dance Theatre-were founded by a former professional dancer, someone with a degree in dance from a respected institution, or someone bringing a significant interest in quality dance instruction and with a clear vision of building confidence, fitness, and actual dance skills. Many of these programs have a competition dance program. Upper Merion Dance is a 21 year old program with no clearly defined vision. The founder has a recreational dance background, and relies on staff to bring all of the knowledge of proper technique and good pedagogy. This can be fine, except when there is no unified sense of student preparation or pedagogical technique, and the owner doesn't know what makes a good instructor of a type of dance they don't know. Contributing to this lack of unified teaching is a lack of understood rules. There is no rules handbook. As a parent you do not sign off on any set of acknowledged rules, so the rules are whatever suits the owner at that moment. This can easily lead to questionable decision making; a child of a well-liked client can be a problem in the classroom with no consequences, a child of a less-liked client can be ejected because the parent expressed an unpopular opinion. The lack of a rules handbook is just one way that there is no transparency in the Upper Merion Dance program. Many studios tout their instructors' credentials on their website, but not here. The founder may be teaching your child Jazz 1, and leaving the classroom assistant to teach while handling some administrative issue. Your instructor may also be very qualified and hold a bachelors in dance from Temple, but you will never find that information because there is no website. There is also no progression checklist for any form of dance other than a very vague evaluation in your online payment portal, so kids are moved up or held back at what may feel like the whim of the instructor. One instructor may wish to create a "class" of children who just so happen to be all close in age, even if the children are receiving very different amounts of instruction. It's a recreational dance school, but one kid may be held back while the rest of the class moves up, despite that there were no clearly outlined goals for the year, which seems out of place if this is just "for funsies." Regardless of whether you would like your child to learn a dance form or just enjoy some fitness with friends, I recommend going somewhere else. The price tag isn't worth it.

He was still learning to walk at the time, and I needed to make sure he could get use out of their programming because you have to commit to a number of sessions over a few months. There is no option for one or two classes, or just a month, so clearly I wanted to try it before plunking down hundreds of dollars. I was told this would be no problem and scheduled a class time to visit. Dad wanted to attend the trial session too, and he was called to DC last minute, so I had to reschedule. I called one or two days before the scheduled visit time, then the day of, then again a few days later. Despite calling during business hours every time, I always went direct to voicemail, and I never got a call back. After THREE calls with no reply, I was done. There is no way I want to buy services for my child from people who don't answer the phone during business hours, and are incapable of returning a call for potential business (from a child at one of the youngest ages offered, meaning he'd be a potential longer term client). Very unprofessional and sketchy. It's unfortunate because I am a local resident, and I'm the reason they set up shop in my community, right? Oh well.

Their drills for "toddlers" are ridiculous, throwing a bean bag, walking across a mat, it's very childish and for babies. They have very young girls teaching the classes and they seem to just be focused on making a profit. When I inquired about moving my daughter up bc she was bored, they refused to even offer to test her and then ignored my email completely and rejected her entrance to the older team, when she can do multiple tricks and is close to completing a back hand-spring. She wasn't even allowed to do cart wheels in the "toddler" group. Everything is solely based on birthdate and not skill. We switched to Synergy and they immediately tested her and advanced her to the higher group. No assistance for the party hosts with gifts, food or set-up, but I think that's just the style of the offering here. If you're hands-on you're fine (and our hosts were awesome at that). Only con was we were mid-way through the departure of guests at the end, and all other gymnasts and every staff member were already gone. Just felt odd, like empty and rushed out. I guess they know and trust our hosts to clean up and door locks behind them, or maybe someone was still there in a back office or something, but it just seemed odd to be there with everything else closed. All in all it was a great experience, and the staff led the kids really well with the party activities. They had enough spotters for young kids, and were being very safety-conscious. Extremely disappointing experience at the Newark location. I would strongly encourage parents to…read morethink carefully before enrolling their children here for ninja class and any gymnastics program. My children (ages 4, 6, and 8) missed ONE class during a 10-week session. Their written policy states that students are allowed one makeup class or open gym, yet the gym refused to honor it despite weeks of calls, emails, messages, and even an in-person visit trying to resolve the issue respectfully. What made this situation especially frustrating was the constant shifting of explanations as to why my children were being denied a makeup class. First, I was told that "makeups are not guaranteed per our policies (which are listed online)." I thoroughly reviewed their entire online policy page multiple times, and nowhere does it state that makeups are automatically denied under these circumstances or that end-of-session makeups are prohibited. Second, their policy also does not explain how families are supposed to schedule a makeup when the missed class happens at the very end of a session. Once I pointed out that obvious gap in the policy, the explanation then changed to: the session had ended, so the kids could no longer make up the class. Then the explanation changed yet again to claiming I "never contacted them" to arrange a makeup. That statement is completely contradicted by documented calls, emails, voicemails, and follow-ups over several weeks. I even contacted the gym 2 weeks PRIOR to missing the class to ask how the makeup process worked and was told the absence first had to occur before scheduling could happen. Afterward, I repeatedly attempted to coordinate the makeup and received no meaningful communication in return. The responses I did receive were extremely short, dismissive, and defensive. At one point I was even told my attempts to resolve the issue were "excessive," despite the fact that the only reason I kept reaching out was because nobody would provide a clear answer or reasonable resolution. I also came to the gym in person hoping to speak with someone face to face. I spoke with a supposed manager and still got nowhere. I requested a direct phone call or face-to-face meeting with the owners to discuss the issue professionally, and those requests were denied as well. The amount of effort this gym put into gatekeeping a single open gym makeup for three young children was honestly unbelievable. The Newark location feels poorly managed and lacking accountability. The impression I was left with is that customer concerns are ignored, policies are interpreted differently depending on the situation, and families are dismissed the moment they ask questions or point out inconsistencies. This entire issue could have been resolved with one reasonable conversation and basic customer service. Instead, it became weeks of avoidance, contradictory explanations, and dismissive treatment over one missed class. Parents absolutely deserve to know how concerns are handled here before committing their time and money.
