I do like JJ Cooper's the food has always been good but I would never eat taco Tuesday there again. The steak tacos were $22 with no steak in them and the service that night was not good. Took us over an hour and a half to eat, that's why they get two stars for taco Tuesday. read more

Really didn't have a nice experience at this place. Was looking to have a great time, after our great dinner date . But the bartender made sure I wasn't going to have one. I used to work in hospitality,.. we came in all happy and left sad. This is not how you run a business,.. we will never ever come back ! We we were both like okay let's just go home and watch bar rescue and call it a night! This was not good! This is my first bad review ever ! I liked the outdoor seating in the back with the roof top open. All the plates that were ordered were delicious except the meatballs... wasn't a big fan over it but 5 out of 5 for me. You can't beat the value for a quality meal in LB. It is reasonably priced for much better than bar food yet they have bar favorites. Service is great and attentive. If seated in the bar area, I find it fun but it can be lively if busy. There is plenty of seating in the quieter adjacent dining room also. read more

First tried this place for brunch on a Sunday. We got the american breakfast, the Belgian waffle, and the eggs benedict. Everything was really yummy and nicely prepared. The food is just decent in my opinion and the service just lacks all around unfortunately. Their tidbits are really tasty and they have specials for Football Sundays throughout the NFL season. Went to JJ Cooper's last night for dinner. Not too bad. The reservation/host staff was very accommodating when I had to delay our reservation due to unexpected traffic. Much appreciated! Food service was a little slow (considering the restaurant was not nearly full - our main course took a very long time to come out). I had the special: Tender Chilean Sea Bass, over tomato risotto. She had the ribeye (well done), mashed potatoes and sautéed broccoli. Across-the-board the food was very good. Will never come back! My sister, brother and I were excited to have a special brunch this weekend since we all live in different states now. Unfortunately, this experience turned out to be God awful. The waitress Mel was so sarcastic, inattentive and nasty, We couldn't believe the lack of decency, respect and customer service. She took our order; 2 salads, truffle fries and the avocado toast. 40 minutes later we are still sitting at an empty table. No water, no plates, no appetizers, and no sight of the waitress mel. We sat patiently, watching other groups of people walking in after us, being seated, ordering, and eating their meals! We waited over an hour for two salads and avocado toast. The avocado toast was presented on two gigantic slices of Italian bread, with a thin tiny smear of guacamole in the middle, topped with unripe tomatoes , and a burnt sunny side up egg. The edges of the egg were brown, the white of the egg was still clear, gooie, and obviously uncooked. It looked so unappetizing and unappealing I couldn't believe what we were served! Mel never came back to check on us, to offer more drinks, nothing! We were ghosted. After repeatedly asking several staff members for a check, we sat waiting, and waiting, and waiting. We waited so long, we considered adding up the value of our food, rounding up and just leaving cash on the table. I finally had to get up and walk across the restaurant to complain and obtain our servers attention, Mel spoke to us with a nasty, passive aggressive tone and I couldn't believe her intentional indecency. This was the first time in my entire 32 years that I did not tip a waitress. The bill was $85.00 for a horrible experience. Our family business is in the Restaurant/Lounge industry, so we have reverence for servers, never send anything back, and are very patient & understanding. I wish I took photos of the food and had a video to post here. There are sooooo many great restaurants in Long Beach. I highly encourage you to seek out other restaurants because this place is a disgrace. read more

Only go to this place if you want to feel like crap after. My bf and I went there last night after a beautiful day, we got a few apps, two entrees (Ahi Tuna and Rib Eye steak) and sides. The food tasted good but it was way too salty and greasy. During the meal I felt constantly thirsty and dehydrated and I never feel like that during dinner. I drank a whole pitcher of water before the entrees came. We ended up taking a lot of food back to the hotel but threw it out because of how bad we felt. We spent the whole night feeling shaky, nauseous and gassy. I don't normally write these reviews but I only am to warn others that their food will make you feel terrible. On top of that, the restaurant was completely packed and many people were walking around without masks. Even when we arrived the hostesses weren't wearing masks. I understand everyone is trying to adjust with COVID but it really was off putting to see so many careless people and no enforcement. I'm giving two stars because the waitress was very nice, the music was good and the outdoor backyard patio space was pretty at night. Other than that I would not recommend going there. Typical early summer dining conundrum: one of us wants to eat inside, another *must* eat outside. J.J. Cooper's has the answer - an open ceiling back patio with the best of both worlds. I had the soup of the day, a cauliflower bisque with shrimp and garlic crostini. Serious soup! Good beer list, including local beers on tap from Oceanside and Long Island City (appreciated). I tried the special of the day, grilled octopus over greens with capers - excellent. A friend had the braised short ribs and loved it; I had one of the dry-rub chicken wings and was pleasantly surprised, their wing game is strong here. This is a renovated location with elevated American fare. Don't come here expecting adventurous menu options, but do expect a notch above the pub fare of neighboring establishments. read more

I would give this recently re-done restaurant a fourth star if it wasn't for the fact that it is really loud there; too loud to comfortably talk to friends without nearly yelling. Also, we were seated in the indoor patio area and it was pretty cold. They did a beautiful reno here, giving it a hip, urban vibe with cobalt blue back-lighting around the bar, open dining space, kind of dimly lit, and packed with happy, loud people. Been looking for a place with some elevated bar food and I think this could be the local spot. Prices were more than fair for what you get. Came in for a drink and something to snack on last night (and to see what Sutton Place had been converted into). I normally focus on food first and not ambiance, but the changes were pretty impressive. Place has major curb presence now (inviting blue-purple lighting that draws you in and really separates JJ Coopers from the surrounding buildings). The interior looks just as good. New distressed wood accent walls, quartz bar, classy height-top seating available and new flooring to name a few of the changes. Went with a GSB Massive and an amaretto sour for the lady. They crush some ice on the top of the beer which I am not a fan of (actually thought the line was frozen when I saw it and I was getting a beer slushy). Ice/chilled glasses with craft beer is a huge no-no. Good news is they do have premium products on tap and this is a quick alteration (just ask your customers if they want the crushed ice!). Mixed drink was reported as very good. Ordered a cheese and charcuterie board. You get to either pick two, three or four. Went middle of the road and selected manchego cheese, chorizo and serano ham. The portions are very generous,the quality is good and the presentation was awesome (served up on a big wooden slate). You get a couple of toppings: red onion, two jams, and baby pickles (forget the name). The jams were awesome (actually requested more crostinis so we could eat it all). Saw some of the other stuff coming out of the kitchen (seared tuna and a variety of burgers) and they looked killer. Will definitely be back to try more! Docking a star for the time being for a couple of service issues. Beer ice issue was outlined above. Actually had to order my beer twice (so it took about 5-10 mins longer than the mixed drink), which was somewhat understandable because the place was busy and there was only one bartender, and there seemed to be some sort of leak because water was flowing onto the bar top (unbeknownst to me, soaked my napkin which consequently soaked my lap). read more
