Spaghetti with meat sauce...garlic bread and salad not shown
    Lora D.

My rating is 3 1/2 stars. I'm comparing Jim's to dinners. Those missing lunch counters at Woolworth's, your local drug store or department store lunch spot. Not the latest thing at the Pearl or even your favorite local restaurant around the corner. I grew up on the East coast, DC area, where dinners and lunch counters were a favorite go to for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night. It's that place you have 4 or 5 favorite orders that you rotate and you go there because your mouth is already set for that dish. Oh maybe, once in a while you won't have something in mind and decide to try something new and maybe add to your rotation. It's where you went with friends or coworkers after you worked a late shift or got off work early in the morning. They are not open round the clock anymore...where I wonder do those workers go now? For many years I happily ordered and really enjoyed their Canadian Cheese Soup...broccoli cheese soup to me. Then one day when I was ill a friend brought me Jim's Chicken Tortilla Soup...5 stars every time...and I've never gone back to cheese soup though I'm sure it's still great. Jim's got me through Covid when I needed a balanced meal. Something solid and satisfying. Yes I too go out and try that new spot...that ethnic meal either from a place I've visited or lived or one I never have. But this is the basics, not too spicy, what mother or grandmother might put in front of you. So this visit was called in and picked up...my dinner then lunch the next day. Spaghetti and meat sauce....lots of meat, good garlic bread, it's light on the tomato sauce and when I eat in I get them to bring me the marinara sauce dipping cups and add it. No it's not up to my favorite Italian restaurant in spices etc but perfect for when I'm lazy and just want some. Or when my tummy etc are kicking off and I just can't have spicy anything, or under the weather. I enjoyed a salad with this. Second was a club sandwich...have loved this sandwich since childhood...and they always give you the pickle unlike some more pricey sandwich shops where it never seems to be put in the box even as they swear it's there when you pick up. And I had a salad with it. Unfortunately it's a little hot for soup right now. They are good about you deciding to change your side or even add an egg to something that doesn't come with an egg. Is it exciting food? Not really but very satisfying for what it is...basic solid food served as you expected it every time.

Cheese enchiladas made with chili! She got the Senior meal so it's not too much for her

Come see Andrea she's an awesome server! Kids love the food and talking to Andrea! Love the chili!!

We went to see our pops on Valentine's Day and usually go to a nicer spot but due to weather turning a bad turn and ice on roads #2021SASnowdays - we went to a comfort spot close to pops. Our waiter was super nice and friendly - great personality! I enjoy him! Ok this is comfort food so it is what is is and it was super comfortable! Pops had steak and shrimp! Brother had double meat burger with delicious onion rings and I had pork chops - wow those things were good! The cook was awesome! Only suggestion is for the mashed potato's they had zero flavor had to pour lots of gravy! We made it in and out safely and with a good experience!

Our family has been going here for years because of the friendly servers and familiarity they provide the service with. This is a busy location and sometimes waits are long so if you're in a hurry call ahead and order take out or sit at the bar. Their weekday specials have got to be the best value of any restaurant in San Antonio; homemade style, generous portions, and a free drink to boot. Meatloaf Mondays and Pot Roast Wednesdays are our favorites. I gotta give this location five stars because of service and despite being part of a larger firm, the charm of a family run business. We always see the same familiar faces and are always left with the impression they are trying the best they can for us. This location is older and would benefit from a refresh but it's got a lot of heart and we'll be back.

This is my favorite location. I took my grandma here for a brunch outing. I've been coming here since I was in kindergarten. The staff are personable. They also know the menu if you have any questions about the plates. What I loved: Their tortilla soup is my go to. I got it that brunch and it was fantastic as usual. It had just the right amount of cheese, and by right amount I mean it had a lot of cheese. My grandma got the senior one egg with sausage. She said it was delicious. Another major plus was the coffee. It was strong and good. What I also love about Jim's is they are open 24 hours and they serve breakfast all day. I can't wait to go here again.

My chicken fid steak is a bowl for my gravy! ! Woooo!!

3 fingers of scotch is what Mr. Smidgens is used to. Now 3 fingers of gravy? That's a first! Yuppers, Mr. Smidgens and his lovely song bird were heading back to Austin after playing a charity event for The St Jude Foundation. We had read via social media that our very own Kelly S. had dined at a Jims recently. It was a cold dreary day, why not. We walked in and saw young and old alike. The older crowd had just come from church and were all dressed to the nines! They were regulars too. They knew the waitstaff and the waitstaff knew them. The service was great! Our waiter really took care of us and he genuinely enjoys his job. That is always great to see. We made our choices and went with the eggs Benedict and the chicken fried steak with cream gravy, hash browns, and eggs over medium. "What the? Wow!"' Is what we both said as our food was brought to the table. My cfs was flipped into a bowl and full of creamy gravy. It was glorious!! I did indeed measure the gravy with my trusty scotch fingers. 3! What a time to be alive!

After that, it took another 15 minutes before we were acknowledged for water. I ordered a juice which came some time later. The server eventually took our order and shared she didn't know if what we ordered was even available. After taking our order, several other tables arrived and our server failed to return to check on us. We also noticed another customer who arrived after us got served their meal promptly, but only after they went inside three separate times to very loudly complain. To be fair, that customer arrived with a chip on their shoulder. After over 30 minutes, the server finally retuned and told us they never entered our order and asked if we still wanted it. We stated we wanted to leave, but then she pressed us to pay for my drink order. I was surprised, but agreed to pay. She took my cash payment and rushed inside to check with her manager. She returned my cash and said I didn't have to pay, but never apologized. The only high point was that another staff member noticed how hot it was becoming and set up an umbrella, which definitely helped. This could have been just an off day, but I won't be returning.

We were given the option of waiting about 15 minutes for a table or sitting in the bar area, so we chose one of the high-top tables in the bar. The café itself is very cute and has a charming atmosphere. The bar area has red neon lighting along the ceiling, which gives the room a distinctive glow. After ordering coffee and waters, we decided on the fried mushrooms, the meatloaf plate, and the Breakfast Pile. They never ended up refilling any of our drinks. The fried mushrooms came out first and were piping hot. They were served with both white gravy and ranch. The ranch was pretty tasty, but the mushrooms themselves were fairly bland and quite greasy. To be fair, deep-fried mushrooms aren't exactly a light dish, but I found myself adding salt to everything to bring out more flavor. For my entrée, I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. The meatloaf contained carrots, which was an interesting touch. The slices were very thick and firm, and honestly didn't resemble or taste like a traditional meatloaf. I asked for the gravy on the side and ended up dipping each bite into it, but the dish still wasn't my favorite. The green beans were the biggest miss for me. They had a mucky flavor that reminded me of mop water. The Breakfast Pile was decent enough: potatoes, sausage, eggs, and gravy layered together. Unfortunately, it also felt underseasoned and could have benefited from more flavor. The standout item of the entire meal was the biscuit with honey butter. They initially forgot to bring the honey butter, and I'm very glad we asked for it because it completely made the dish. The biscuit was warm, soft, and by far the most enjoyable thing we ate. Overall, Mama's Café has a cute atmosphere and friendly service despite being understaffed when we visited. However, most of the food felt underseasoned and lacked flavor. If you're looking for a cozy spot to sit and chat, it's worth a visit, but based on this meal, I probably would only come back if someone said it was their favorite restaurant and I try what they order

I, of course, got the cinnamon roll pancakes short stack, and they were absolutely divine. No need for butter or syrup, they were perfectly delicious as is, cinnamon swirl included?!? and icing glaze as well. Another favorite was the chile relleno omelette - the poblano pepper on top added some smokiness along with the steak, and the sour cream and cheese cooled it down. Bacon and canadian bacon on point. The Morning Wrecker is basically all of my favorite breakfast foods stacked into one massive sandwich. A perfectly cooked chicken fried steak, crispy hashbrowns, and two over easy eggs sandwiched between a fluffy cat head sized biscuit before being smothered in savory sausage gravy and topped with shredded cheddar cheese. It's definitely a gluttonous meal, but I split it with my buddy and it was absolutely worth the calories and carbs. Every bite delivered exactly what I was hoping for. It's worth stopping by Bobbie's Southern Kitchen for the Morning Wrecker alone, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked fantastic. The service was great and it has that bustling diner feel.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures because the experience was disappointing from the moment…read moreour food arrived. My husband and I had been trying to eat at Bobby's Southern Kitchen for at least 2-3 years. Every time we'd stopped before, the wait was around 2 1/2 hours, and since we were always passing through on our way home to Houston, we never had enough time to stay. This time, we planned our morning around finally getting to eat here. We had spent the weekend in San Antonio and were driving to Dallas before heading home, so we made a point of arriving shortly after opening (a little after 8:00 a.m.). There was no wait, we were seated immediately, and our waitress was wonderful. I wish I could remember her name because she was friendly, attentive, and did everything she could. Our food came out quickly, probably within 15 minutes, but that's where things went downhill. The food wasn't hot. Mine was warm enough to eat, but my husband's breakfast was actually cold. His hash browns were cold, his sausage patties were cold, and since he's someone who really enjoys his food served hot, it immediately ruined the meal for him. We let our waitress know, and she came back to take only the hash browns from his plate. That surprised us because most restaurants would prepare a fresh order rather than reheating part of the original meal. When the hash browns came back, they still weren't hot enough, so unfortunately they didn't solve the problem. For me, the food itself actually had good flavor. I ordered the sausage biscuit with soft scrambled eggs, sausage patties, and a side of grits. The biscuit was good, the eggs were cooked just the way I like them, and the grits were honestly one of the best parts of the meal. They were creamy, had a great consistency, and were well-seasoned with really good flavor. If everything had been served hotter, I honestly think I would have loved my breakfast. My husband ordered a simple breakfast with eggs over medium, toast, sausage patties, and hash browns. I don't necessarily think the food itself was bad I think serving it cold completely changed his experience. What makes this especially disappointing is that we arrived shortly after opening, so we expected everything to be fresh and piping hot. I honestly don't know what happened that morning, but after waiting years to finally try Bobby's, it just didn't live up to the anticipation. The service was excellent, the food had good flavor, and I truly wanted to love this place. I just can't overlook being served a breakfast that wasn't hot, especially first thing in the morning. I hope this was just an off day because I'd like to believe our experience wasn't the norm.
