We use to be regulars to this Jim's location but moved. Then Daylight's Savings surprised us and we thought were are we going to get breakfast? So we decided to go to Jim's. We asked to be seated with our favorite server Shawnda! Even after all this time she knew exactly what our usual order was. That just made our day! We ordered breakfast (Rustler plate and 2 egg plate) and it was so delicious. My favorite is the crispy hash-browns and perfectly cooked bacon! Once I was done with my food I enjoyed my buttered wheat toast with jelly and a never ending cup of coffee. As always Shawnda took good care of us! Had the sampler plater, it comes with mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, chicken tenders , gravy and marinera sauce. The fried mushrooms were very good! For dessert we ordered the lemon meringue pie. I give it a five stars delicious! Our waitress, Was very busy, but we still received good service. We did have to move tables because the music was way too loud and we were sitting at a booth with a speaker right above us and it was hard to concentrate on our conversations with the loud music. read more

My rating is 3 1/2 stars. I'm comparing Jim's to dinners. Those missing lunch counters at Woolworth's, your local drug store or department store lunch spot. Not the latest thing at the Pearl or even your favorite local restaurant around the corner. I grew up on the East coast, DC area, where dinners and lunch counters were a favorite go to for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night. It's that place you have 4 or 5 favorite orders that you rotate and you go there because your mouth is already set for that dish. Oh maybe, once in a while you won't have something in mind and decide to try something new and maybe add to your rotation. It's where you went with friends or coworkers after you worked a late shift or got off work early in the morning. They are not open round the clock anymore...where I wonder do those workers go now? For many years I happily ordered and really enjoyed their Canadian Cheese Soup...broccoli cheese soup to me. Then one day when I was ill a friend brought me Jim's Chicken Tortilla Soup...5 stars every time...and I've never gone back to cheese soup though I'm sure it's still great. Jim's got me through Covid when I needed a balanced meal. Something solid and satisfying. Yes I too go out and try that new spot...that ethnic meal either from a place I've visited or lived or one I never have. But this is the basics, not too spicy, what mother or grandmother might put in front of you. So this visit was called in and picked up...my dinner then lunch the next day. Spaghetti and meat sauce....lots of meat, good garlic bread, it's light on the tomato sauce and when I eat in I get them to bring me the marinara sauce dipping cups and add it. No it's not up to my favorite Italian restaurant in spices etc but perfect for when I'm lazy and just want some. Or when my tummy etc are kicking off and I just can't have spicy anything, or under the weather. I enjoyed a salad with this. Second was a club sandwich...have loved this sandwich since childhood...and they always give you the pickle unlike some more pricey sandwich shops where it never seems to be put in the box even as they swear it's there when you pick up. And I had a salad with it. Unfortunately it's a little hot for soup right now. They are good about you deciding to change your side or even add an egg to something that doesn't come with an egg. Is it exciting food? Not really but very satisfying for what it is...basic solid food served as you expected it every time. read more

Always reliable quality on the menu, from the kitchen, from the wait staff, from the bakery products, and the overall cleanliness and condition of the establishment. In this visit, i experienced a four - and 1/2-star meal. Never at a date-night level, but not a mediocre meal occasion either. Over the three years of my experience with this San Antonio chain, the longtime family business has been making occasional rumblings in the news, threatening to break up -- family and business -- and close down properties. I'm happy that every time I get a hankering for an old-timey diner experience, I can find a nearby Jim's that's still soldiering on. For me, that's usually a midday breakfast: their omelets and gravy biscuits and coffee never let me down. This time, it was dinner, and I was not disappointed with the groundbeef steak, mashed potatoes, and brown gravy, with green beans that happily tasted of green beans, not the all-too-common onions and bacon concoctions so often presented lately. The hamburger steak patty was good quality meat cooked just-right medium, and the brown gravy was seasoned just right, thankfully neither over nor under salted. The desserts I took home included a slice of coconut cream pie that was a solid B-plus and one of apple pie that was a disappointing bare C-minus. The apple pie was slathered with some kind of glistening oil that might have been a preservative. Certainly ruined the taste and spoiled the opportunity for a five-star rating. The experience was definitely enhanced by the skilled and cheery assistance of my waitress Elizabeth. A solid five-star effort. She definitely added to my enjoyment of my visit to this Jim's in southwest SATX. read more

Today 2/27/24. We just left and this was just one of the worst ran places that I have been to. We got there and had to wait 5 mins just to get seated. And it was really only a handful of people in the place. You had one bus boy, one waitress, and an assistant manager working . We never got past our drink order, never got to order our food, and after 30 minutes, we paid for our drinks and left. Jims has not been the same 4 years after covid. Just a downhill slide of everything from closing stores to food service. I have to give this place a no star rating, but I will have to just go with one to get it posted read more

We went to see our pops on Valentine's Day and usually go to a nicer spot but due to weather turning a bad turn and ice on roads #2021SASnowdays - we went to a comfort spot close to pops. Our waiter was super nice and friendly - great personality! I enjoy him! Ok this is comfort food so it is what is is and it was super comfortable! Pops had steak and shrimp! Brother had double meat burger with delicious onion rings and I had pork chops - wow those things were good! The cook was awesome! Only suggestion is for the mashed potato's they had zero flavor had to pour lots of gravy! We made it in and out safely and with a good experience! read more

Our family has been going here for years because of the friendly servers and familiarity they provide the service with. This is a busy location and sometimes waits are long so if you're in a hurry call ahead and order take out or sit at the bar. Their weekday specials have got to be the best value of any restaurant in San Antonio; homemade style, generous portions, and a free drink to boot. Meatloaf Mondays and Pot Roast Wednesdays are our favorites. I gotta give this location five stars because of service and despite being part of a larger firm, the charm of a family run business. We always see the same familiar faces and are always left with the impression they are trying the best they can for us. This location is older and would benefit from a refresh but it's got a lot of heart and we'll be back. read more

This is my favorite location. I took my grandma here for a brunch outing. I've been coming here since I was in kindergarten. The staff are personable. They also know the menu if you have any questions about the plates. What I loved: Their tortilla soup is my go to. I got it that brunch and it was fantastic as usual. It had just the right amount of cheese, and by right amount I mean it had a lot of cheese. My grandma got the senior one egg with sausage. She said it was delicious. Another major plus was the coffee. It was strong and good. What I also love about Jim's is they are open 24 hours and they serve breakfast all day. I can't wait to go here again. read more

My review is from a long time ago. When I say a long time ago, I mean about 20 years. When I first visited this location I had moved down from Chicago. The staff was extremely friendly & welcoming. The food was amazing! Specifically the tortilla soup! Then a few months later things for me went sideways. I was living out of a car with a cat & no job. The staff actually fed me. They let me stay in the restaurant at night & allowed me to sleep in my car while on their property. They were a true godsend. I remember one night when a waiter came up to me & asked if my cat was sitting in the restaurant window. She was. An ex-girlfriend had gotten into my car & let her out. The staff was amazing to me & my old girl. If I was able to see that staff again, I'd give them a huge thank you for everything they did for me. read more

It'd been many years since I'd eaten at a Jim's. My a/c died, and I wanted a hot meal in a relaxed environment. Jim's has comfy booths, and decent American food, so it fit the requirements. I had the mushroom Swiss burger, light mayo, no pickles due to allergy. There were pickles on the burger, which caused a minor freak out. Other than that, it was quite tasty! I also had a side of steamed carrots instead of fries, and a side salad with raspberry vinaigrette. The vinaigrette bottle was dirty, but I enjoyed the dressing. My dining companion had a giant salad with chicken, and bacon with ranch dressing. She loved it. We asked for separate checks, but the waitress combined our total. When we went to pay, their register malfunctioned due to difficulty separating our orders. It took a while to pay our bills, which inconvenienced the person I was with. read more

The food is always awesome, the only time I've ever not liked something on their menu is due to my personal taste, never their competence in the kitchen. My mother-in-law LOVES their tortilla soup, and swears it is the best you can get in San Antonio. The servers are very attentive and really good about refilling drinks. The ones that have worked there a long time know us as regulars and are always very happy to see us. Sometimes the restroom is less than perfect, but it seems to only be when they are extremely busy, and never seems to have been that way for very long. Sometimes the wait for food is long, but never to an exceeding degree. The prices are okay; about $8.00 for a large Spanish omelet stuffed with onions and bell peppers, with hash browns, refried beans, and flour tortillas. The drinks are about $3.00, but refills for coffee, tea, and soda are free. For those who have never been to a Jim's, the ambiance is that of a 50's diner to a modernized degree. Oldies music spanning the 50's to the early 70's is always playing at a low and comfortable yet listenable volume. They offer bar seating in high-backed stools, comfortable booths (including a few large ones that comfortably seat as many as 8 people) and standard table seating. Overall; this location has its flaws like any other, but the rare complaint is swiftly addressed with sincere apologies and corrections of the issue. I would definitely recommend this location for its good food, cheery service, and overall pleasant atmosphere. read more

I come here on a usual about 2-3 times a week. Natosha Moore is my waitress. She knows I come in here to sit eat and work. By the time I get from my car to the restaurant, I can usually find my booth since she has already served me a glass of in sweet tea and a bow of Tortilla Soup. She always gives service with a smile and is super friendly. I watch people while I sit here and have come to notice she treats EVERYONE like royalty. The food never seems to be bad. Such rude service and the place is dirty. My daughter is pregnant and we went there. She has terrible morning sickness and it takes her a bit to eat her food. We were done with our meal and the waitress (her name starts with a C) she looked straight at my daughter and said while trying to take her plate "well that was a waste". I'm a fan of Jim's and appreciate the economical prices, wide variety of choices on the menu and the 24 hour service. We had dinner at this location earlier this week and I'm sad to say that I was disappointed. The restaurant wasn't that busy and we were seated right away. Unfortunately we waited over 30 minutes for a hamburger and a BLT. I actually saw our food sitting in the window for the longest time wondering if it was ours. We weren't served until another server came by and asked if we were waiting for our check. We mentioned that we were waiting for our food, and then the food that I was starting at became ours. I think that there was some sort of mix up between the kitchen and the waitstaff. Last night I saw many of the servers just waiting at the window for their orders, so perhaps this was an off night. However, I've never had this kind of service at the Potranco location so I'll stick with that one for now. read more
