We came in today for an early dinner. Order was scrambled eggs, sausage, grits and biscuits. We got everything except for the biscuits. I get it...it wasn't very busy and it's better to have fresh biscuits rather than under a light biscuits. Our server kept us informed but the problem he was done eating about 10 minutes before the biscuits even came to our table. So...we brought them home. The other issue we had which was an even bigger issue was the temperature in the restaurant. The longer we stayed, the warmer it became. The window blinds were all open...there was on small-ish oscillating fan on the floor just as you walk in. We asked our server was the a/c working and her response was "it's on...but barely." This is the 2nd time we've been to this location in the last two months and the a/c was no better then as it was today. So...unless the a/c situation improves we'll not be back. Well, its been a while, but as I remember, the food was either overcooked or cold. PLUS we got a show, it looked like an episode of COPS.

The food was excellent the only draw back was the flies. I noticed the Jim's #42 didn't hany ANY. Leaving me and the other customers to shooing them off. Not to mention I lost my appetite and just left. Jims should invest in fly zappers to avoid loss of customers. read more

No matter which Jim's I visit and no matter what part of town it's on; there's always gonna be the same food and same service. So if I can say anything, I will at least say they're consistent. Now the consistency may not be the kind that you want. Because they are consistent slow with their service, and consistently mediocre (at best) with their food. I've very rarely not been pleased with Jim's, they are my go-to place! They're decently priced and my orders have always been very good! They have daily specials but I mostly stick with a breakfast...The pancakes are big and fluffy, the veggie omelet is very good! The only sandwich I've tried is the BLT, again something I liked a lot! The only definitely subpar order I ever got was grilled tilapia, way too salty And not cooked enough! Of course Jim's is not for everyone! It's not fancy; simple, no frills! We mainly went to Jim's for their onion rings so my friend could try them for the first time. I've loved them for decades. The restaurant was busy but it wasn't overly crowded and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves with some eating breakfast and some having lunch. It was like being in an old fashioned diner. The onion rings (or onion strings) were just as good and delicious as they always were. Some people might think they're too greasy but I think they're Great. We each got a mushroom Swiss burger which was very very good.... tasty sautéed mushrooms, a thick burger patty with grill marks, lettuce and tomato, and kind of sloppy which was really great. I hate a dry burger. The French fries were crispy and delivered piping hot so that I had to wait a bit for them to cool so I could chew them. If you go here, be prepared to wait for your meal. This isn't fast food... but it sure is worth the wait! I'll be eating there again SOON. read more

Okay, back in the early 1980s I used to go to this Jims. We lived at one of the apartment complexes just up the street on the 410. Well on a recent trip to San Antonio, I decided to try it again with a to-go order. I ordered the cheeseburger and fries. While the food was fine -- exactly what I expected and remembered. The condition of this Jim's is sorely lacking. The restaurant smells bad, like really bad, like old frying oil. It needs some upkeep and it's probably time to redo the entire interior. I went to the bathroom which is in total need of a good cleaning and replacement of the sink. It's full of graffiti and smelled horrible. The service was fine, but it wasn't busy in the restaurant. They didn't mess up on my order and the waitress made sure that I had plenty of ketchup, salt, and eating utensils. Regarding social distancing, the staff was masked up, they required masks to enter, and every other table was blocked off for social distancing. read more

I've used a lot of Jim's in my day, usually the YMCA, but this was a new one for me. This is a local diner chain which makes pretty decent food, especially if you know what to order. If you order the wrong thing, it can go badly, and service can be hit-or-miss, but prices are affordable and I love especially that it's open 24 hours. So I give this place four stars because of the added bonus of it being available at 3 or 4 in the morning which is the time I'm often looking for a decent meal. read more

I called at 8:19 PM and no one answered; I was going to order to go, like I have done at least 5 times this month. Not answering the phone isn't unusual; if I call before a certain time, or a certain manager is there, someone will pickup. I called 5 times while I was home and 2 times while in the restaurant. I asked the two ladies at the front if they know what is wrong with the phone; they said they did not and continue to do business. I looked over the counter and the phone was off; there was not anything on the display screen. I asked one lady if I can have the owners' information and she said she had to get her manager. The customer in front of me, also ordering to go, walks back to his car. After he walked out, one of the ladies locks the door; it is about 9:20 PM. I told the lady that locked the door that it was illegal to lock customers in a business during the operating hours. She began to state what time the kitchen closes, I interrupted and told her that the restaurant does not close until 10 PM and that's in 40 minutes. She continues to walk towards the kitchen. I stated two practices they were doing to drive customers away. I reminded the other hostess that I requested the owners' info. I'm standing at the cash register when this lady steps into the kitchen and yells, "Kevin, this lady is bitching about something and wants to speak to you." I asked her who was bitching; she just looked at me. I told her that I was not bitching, I asked her several times for the owners' info and she did not have any business working in a restaurant or any customer service job if she was going to speak about customers in the fashion she did while the customer is present. A few more words were exchanged and the manager comes out. I told him how many times I called, how this unanswered calls have happened before, the locking of the business during its operating hours, and of the employees stating that I was bitching. He wrote the number to Frontier Enterprises down; which he stated was the corporation that owns Jim's. When he handed me the paper, I asked for his name. He said Travis; I told him that the employee just called him Kevin and he just stares at me. As previously stated, I have visited this restaurant, at least twice a week (for the month of November), and this is not anywhere near the service my family used to receive when I was a child and we ate at this location. Jim's Restaurants need to do better if they want to ensure their customers are satisfied. read more

Was really excited to sit and have a meal at this location. It was a Sunday evening 8:39pm we were quickly greeted with a not so warm welcome and told "we lock the doors in 5mins" I asked if we could still sit and have our meal. "She said yes get comfortable and sit anywhere you like but don't take like an hour to eat" we left and probably will not return to this location. I've worked in hospitality before and this is not the way to have return customers or build up your establishments "home food comfort" vibe. read more

When I was in retail training one of the things they taught us was that the hardest customer to win back is the one that is ignored. So I walked into this place today at around 1:45pm. An employee told me to sit anywhere I'd like. I sat in an area where there were other people to make sure I was seen. After a number of minutes a waiter shows up and takes the order for the women directly across from me. Nothing is said to me but, then again, it may not have been his station area. He comes and goes again to the womens' table but nothing is said to me. I sat there for almost 10 minutes with no acknowledgement of my existence. I don't often stop by Jims restaurants. I average maybe a visit once every 3 months. It will be a loooong time before I come back here. Other Jims outlets are better run such as the two on Broadway. Forget this place. read more

Ok, so maybe this particular Jim's is a little bit sketchy. Maybe you want to travel a little further down the road to a different location if you're sketch-averse. This little pocket isn't exactly new or in a premier zip code. But: Jim's, in general? I'm a fan because: + most locations are open 24 hours (the downtown-ish locations are open 6AM - 11PM, so they still gotcha covered outside 'traditional' dining hours) + diner food that ain't tryin' too damn hard: breakfast all day, burgers, daily specials, shakes, pies (and tortilla soup!) + the tortilla soup may not be "authentic" (whatever that means), but it has a reputation for a reason + the bottomless coffee is pretty dang good + they don't chase you off if you're meeting a small group to study or otherwise camp a while (tip your waitress in kind, tho, y'all...) + decent prices + I'd rather have Jim's than Denny's or IHOP any day...and not just cos Jim's is a local chain. If we're gonna talk about sticky..... Maybe growing up here stacked me with so many memories in Jim's booths I'll always have nostalgia for the joint. Or maybe it's pretty dang good at doing what it does. (Probably both. If you get the bacon cheeseburger, I recommend you go for a shake, too.) read more

Worst. Service. Ever. We ordered fried mushrooms as an appetizer but didn't get them until our meal came out. (don't order the mushrooms..save your money) I had then asked our server, Desiree, if she could grab me something.. 5 minutes later I see her chatting with her friend. I had to get up and ask a different server who was busy with her own tables to grab it for me. I then go back to my table and had to wait another 10 minutes for a refill of water!!! Kinda a stranger things version of Dennys. I say that because it has a lot of character -- for better or worse -- and might even be cheaper in some places. Generally open 24/7 , unless of course it's a major holiday like Christmas. How do I know? The day after Christmas Jim's remained close until 6:00 am on December 26th. Some weird, uncomely looking man sat directly behind me in a mostly vacant restaurant. (Rude violation of social expectations I know!) He had like a nervous tick or something because he was making noises and fidgeting. Maybe he was nervous? And good reason. Sméagol attempted to order two meals to hoodwink the restaurant. My waiter was on to his game though, and he promptly left without taking a single morsel. Apparently, this is all too common. Anyways, I ordered the double flap jacks , and for less than five dollars, it's not that bad of a a deal. This place however has a major fly problem. Although this Jim's location and most older locations are in need of significant renovations to score high on ambiance, this 5 star rating is because of our waiter, the cook, the food, the service and the people! We recently had breakfast at this location on our way to an appointment early one morning. Our waiter was genuinely kind and accommodating. Not only did he bring us what we ordered, but also a small cup of cheese soup to try while we waited for our order. Something he said was new to the menu and he would appreciate our feedback. The cook came by our table after we had finished eating to ask my husband how he liked the chili chopped steak he had ordered. The cook explained that he was wondering since it was a new recipe they had recently started making adding brisket to the ground beef. All of the food was delicious! As we were paying our bill, someone called in asking if the location had chocolate cake. Although they were out, one of the ladies said that she could have one ready for the caller in about 30 minutes. We frequently visit this location and the biggest issue was the A/C being broken. This is not the first time that we have experienced this issue. We forgave the incontinence when our waitress Fin treated our table with great customer service. Went to dine here today and what we saw and experienced was very disappointing and unacceptable. From the waitress Shaina arranging food around on a plate (eggs, bisquits) with her bare hands after handling money, dishes, various utensils... addressing this with her and receiving a snotty remark back (how else should I do this if not with my hand) to the Manager not taking any action after bringing it to his attention. Shaina then also proceeded to speak loudly about us (the guests) with her coworkers and other guests pretty much yelling that they are all complaining today. Went this morning for Father's Day with my family party of 5 waited for 20 minutes and told they were cleaning are table. Then the Idiot Steve came from the back and gave our table to a party that just walked in. It's about the third time this moron Steve screwed me over here, so we left and will never return to Jim's again in my life. It's so sad to see one awful employee ruin a great iconic San Antonio business! I have expressed the concern about this employee before to the owners and he remains employed there, so I recommend stay out of there at all cost great restaurants down the street which have great service and food! Waited 30 minutes for a table only to be sat in a booth with a dead roach on one side and a live roach running inside the booth. My kids were scared to stay and eat. The waitress even saw it running inside the booth and she was embarrassed. It doesn't take much to clean the booths correctly and thoroughly. Do better. Never coming here again. read more
