As we drove by the Goggleworks building on a visit to see my son, he mentioned that it was known…read morefor its arts programs and we should check it out. I visited the Goggleworks website (www.goggleworks.org) and was impressed with the options available. Via email, I inquired with my questions and was answered immediately. We ultimately chose a private glassblowing session. Remember when you are choosing to partake in these artisanal sessions, you are paying for the artisan's expertise and sharing of knowledge . So at first glance, it may seem pricey. However, given the experience as a whole, it does NOT disappoint! Our instructor Andrew was awesome! His energy and passion matched our excitement. He made our experience so much more fun with his anecdotes about the glassblowing. He explained everything in detail; we never felt rushed or uncomfortable about our skill level. There were four of us in our glassblowing session. He expertly guided us in the best artisan experience I have ever had. For our glassblowing class, we all chose to make drinking glasses. Each of us chose different color palettes to match our varying personalities. Of course, due to the nature of glassblowing, it was a very HOT experience but we were dressed accordingly and hydrated throughout. After we each had our turn, our glasses were immediately placed in a temperature-controlled device (I can't remember its name) to slowly cool the glass down and prevent cracking. We were not permitted to take the glasses home but rather had to come back another day to pick them up. After our session, we headed back to the main Goggleworks building to check out the art exhibits, gift store, and (what I'll call) the artist alley of artisans' work spaces and offices. We spent lots of time enjoying the space and speaking with varying artists. Turns out that the space is a former goggles factory that was used back in the 1800s and the space takes great care in preserving its history. It's soooo cool. It was truly enjoyable!! I highly recommend Goggleworks! This is one of my most memorable experiences!! I can't wait to see our glasses. Note: We arrived early to have breakfast at the onsite cafe, Thorn Alley Kitchen (see separate Yelp review for more details).

I love art! I have never heard of this place until looking up free things to do in the reading…read morearea. We walked in and the lady behind the retail/customer service desk told us about the building and where to walk since it was our first time visiting, she was very lovely! The first floor had their showing for their art show and the rest of the floors is their classrooms and displayed all their students art pieces. It is an absolutely beautiful building and all of the art is amazing. Some pieces you are able to buy which I find very cool!

Enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Gables for our anniversary celebration - what a hidden treasure in…read morethe City of Reading. The location is very easy to find along Centre Ave. Cesar texted earlier in the day to confirm our reservation, and we arrived and were greeted right away by Linda. She showed us to our room and otherwise let us be for the rest of the evening. I absolutely loved that they have kept the original mansion feel to the whole home - the furnishings, the hardwood floors, the fixtures...all feel like it was just how the Sternbergh family left it. On a cold evening, it took a bit of time for the room to heat up, but once it did, we were very comfortable. We could see most of Reading and Wyomissing from our location, and even ventured out onto the Terrace Balcony - would be a lovely location to spend an afternoon. We slept very well and enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Linda in the morning. Fresh coffee and OJ, fresh fruit, pumpkin bread, french toast, bacon, and scrambled eggs...all of it was excellent. Linda then gave us a tour of the main floor (piano, music room, dining rooms, etc), you can tell they love to care for the history of the place. We'll definitely return, all in all a lovely gem.

This might be a long review, so please read to the end. My daughter has a cheer competition today…read morewhich has drawn in teams from all over the nearby area. I live in Arlington and she lives in Chantilly. My wife and I had planned to go up and stay elsewhere as my daughter had elected to go with a friend and her friend's mother. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend with them because she became very ill, yet still needs to compete. I called around to various hotels, but all that was left at the major chains were King beds into which a rollaway bed wasn't permitted due to fire safety concerns. So, I called The Gables and spoke to Cesar, the owner. I explained to him the situation and asked if we'd be able to stay at the hotel past checkout so that my daughter could sleep as long as possible in hopes that she'd feel better. Not only did he allow us to stay as long as necessary, but he put me in contact with his sister, Jeannette, who would be in charge when I arrived. I explained the situation to her and she was waiting at the hotel when we arrived. Immediately she took my daughter up to our room while I brought in the luggage and completed check in with her. She provided a brief tour of the area and showed me where I could find tea, hot water, and other things to make my daughter more comfortable. She also kindly offered a glass of wine since I'd just completed a three hour drive. As we're checking out today, I inquired how late we could stay and both Cesar and Jeannette said not to worry. Cesar even offered that Jeannette had previously worked in healthcare and to let her know if we needed any medicine. To say that they've been accommodating is an understatement. The team here at The Gables is the best service I've experienced in years and I'm only giving 5 stars because I can't give more. The breakfast was delicious and the hotel itself is phenomenal. Thank you so much to Cesar, Jeannette, and the team here - you all really outdid yourselves. We will certainly return!
