    UPSIDE DOWN PIE
    Matt S.

I'm hearing seagulls in my head .it's got that classic down the shore, fresh Jersey tomato taste in the sauce, The crust was the best crust I've had in Berks, crispy light, great slight char. It's 17$ for the 14" pie but I promise, it's worth it.

Checked out Spenny's this past week while on a little trip to the Reading area. Checked out Tony's a couple years ago and had been hearing I should check this place out and after looking over the menu, I agreed! Decided to go with "The Classic Jawn" - cooper sharp wit, and an order of the loaded tots that I split with my friend (who got herself a chicken cheesesteak). The woman who helped us at the counter, and the woman who brought the food/drinks to the table were both very friendly. The decor was also very cool. They had a fun neon sign and the one wall was littered with various reading and Philly lore. The loaded tots came with bacon and a sauce that was like an American cheese sauce and ranch hybrid. The tots were nice and crispy even with all of the wet and heavy stuff on them and the flavor was very good. I'd get these anytime I stopped here. The classic jawn was a very good steak. I felt at $13 that the amount of meat was perfectly fine but I could see people complaining...it's what they do ‍. Ribeye with cooper sharp and a small dice onion on a seeded Corropolese roll. It was exactly what I'd hoped for when heading in. I'd go back for sure and I'd order the same exact thing. Spenny's in Reading, PA - Didn't Suck!

    The humble cheese steak, chopped

If there's one takeaway from this review, let it be known that Spenny's finely *chops* their steak, rather than slicing it. The result is voluminous, airy shreds of steak, that's almost .. uh, fluffy(?) as it lays inside a superb Italian roll. And I really mean they hit it out of the park with these rolls. It's actually the first thing you notice when taking that first bite (that's right, even before the steak itself), contrary to popular belief. The first thing out of our mouths following the first bite was "Wow, these rolls are straight FI-YAAAAAAAA," or something along those lines. There's only one size here for sandwiches, they range from $12-$14, and the proper Philly way to order is plastered on the menu: "Order any steak 'wit' or 'without' grilled onions." You get two nicely brined pickle slices, which is a nice touch. I wonder if they're home brined? I wouldn't put it past them. Sometimes I like to go a little west coast and deck my steak out with lettuce, tomatoes, raw onion, and mayo - aka steak a la California. It's pretty taboo in these parts and may attract some dirty looks. Same deal with adding tomato sauce. I get accosted by my own friends for these types of offenses. But sometimes I just can't help myself, and I have to say this was one of the best Cali cheese steaks I ever had the pleasure of doo doo'ing out later. Hours later, I would burp and be taken back to that afternoon at Spenny's sitting at the high top, laughing, regaling, living free. Don't forget about the bonus treats, like cheese fries, shakes, and FLOATS. These floats made me so happy. A buddy went for root beer, an orange for me. So, so refreshing with a touch of decadence. When a server walked by asking if we needed anything, I jokingly wished for a refill of my orange float. She turned around and asked if I really wanted one. "Haha, no. I mean yeah, but I don't expect you to refill this." She thought a moment, grabbed my cup, and said "Let me see what I can do." A couple minutes later she brings me a whole new orange float. This just blew me away. This was the same girl who took our orders at the register. Stupendous service on her end. One additional note regarding the chopped steak - don't eat too fast, you can end up inhaling and subsequently choking on it, as my one friend did twice during the course of the meal. Then again, he was eating like a piranha plant from Mario 3. There's plenty, and I mean plenty of parking. Seating is somewhat limited, and it's an order-at-the-register-seat-yourself-they-bring-the-food-out type of place. Staff will check in on you as they clear away tables nearby, and the owner likes to come out from the kitchen when it slows down to chat everyone up. Great establishment and serious competitor in the cheese steak battlegrounds known as Reading, PA. Probably the best service for sure. That's what sets it above some other places, particularly one in West Reading.

This family owned cheesesteak joint will get my business time after time after time. The staff is always super friendly. I talk with the father EVERY TIME I come in. Nicest people. Food is crazy good and huge portion. If you need a spot to go before a Fightins game this is the SPOT! You can't walk through that door and not feel like you are in Philadelphia. Before you leave you'll be sayin Jawn, Wooder Ice, and GO BIRDS.

Great spot celebrating Philly sports and cheesesteaks. Staff was very friendly, fast service. Best cheesesteak in the Berks area by far.

Spenny's is a cool family run sandwich & ice cream shop specializing in true Philly Style cheesesteaks & hoagies. You can eat in or take out. Everything they serve is melt in your mouth delicious! Make sure to get a basket of specialty fries (I suggest the Spenny Fries!) or a side of their crispy onion rings.

Very good onion rings and boom boom sauce with REAL boom.

Got a cheesesteak from here and it was just ok. The bread wasn't great and it lacked cheese and flavor.

Jimbo's fare is pretty standard for a cheesesteak place. They had the usual steak sandwiches and I wanted a really good cheesesteak. I was pleasantly surprised with the meal at Jimbo's. I ordered a cheesesteak (big surprise there), and onion rings (love onion rings) and a coke. The place was decorated in an interesting style. There were many tables lined up along the side walls of the restaurant and the center aisle made from the tables on each side was clear. The place was not crowded. It was about 2PM so it was after the lunch hour and it was also during the week. The place was made up like a 50's diner in red and white with statues of various celebrities (the Blues Brothers, and former President Trump) if you like this addition to the ambience. I don't really remember any music playing. It didn't matter anyway. The cheesesteak was very good, the roll was fresh, Anthony steak tasted like a South Philadephia cheesesteak steak. I the onion rings were crispy and hot and delicious. I definitely would order both again. Service was also great. The order was taken and the food came very fast. The cheesesteak was far too large to eat in one sitting so I took what remained home. I would certainly choose Jimbo's on a list of local eateries to try!! Four stars because it was very good -- nothing really to complain about at all, and good food.
