Jim and team were great to work with during our preliminary assessment of cost and scope for remodel project. He provided me with a preliminary bid at no cost. Offered to work with the county of San Mateo to get my permit approved. My structural engineer took care of it all, but it's nice to have a knowledgable and seasoned professional on the team. Although we ended up using another contractor and cannot speak on his design and construction work, I am confident he would've gotten the job done. With all the consultation and advice and visits, Jim only charged us $500. Due to our budget constraint, we chose another contractor. I first contacted Jim Walters when I discovered by accident in a tile store that the design by the contractor I planned to use to remodel my master bath would not pass code. It then made sense that they refused to pull permits and left that up to me only if I insisted. Jim immediately responded to the challenge, came up with a creative solution that would meet code and pulled the appropriate permits. His top notch team fully remodeled the bath, replacing the tub with full stone shower and bench, beautiful cabinets and warmed stone floor. It has the spa-like feeling I wanted and was so happy with that project that we gradually remodeled the whole condo. A few years later, Jim gutted a single story residence and his team did a full remodel inside and out. The result is beautiful space with hand-hewn reclamation hardwood floors or warmed travertine throughout. Throughout the project, as things evolved, I got different ideas and Jim always responded with creative solutions and no back-lash for changing my mind. The change orders increased the cost and schedule but it was worth it. I am totally pleased with the end result and practically have a new house with fully redesigned kitchen, baths, utility and bar area including wiring, plumbing to the street, gutters, doors, windows & courtyard. We even covered the tacky red brick on the front with stucco for a far more stately exterior. Even three years after the remodel, JWC and subs have responded to several minor problems with no additional charge. They are all professional nice people that I enjoy seeing and welcome into my house. Jim is very creative in responding to what seemed like my crazy requests. For example, I wanted to move the washer and dryer from the garage inside the house. Jim created a design to repurpose wasted space in the guest bath to a fully enclosed utility room with cabinets, while retaining a beautiful full bath with large Jacuzzi tub. I was not at all sure how to go about it but asked Jim to come up with a solution to extend a table from the kitchen island without blocking the interior access door to the garage. He and his team designed a beautiful table that easily pulls out of the island to create space about the size of a card table then easily retracts to avoid blocking pathway to the garage. I use that space more than the bistro table in the kitchen or the formal dining table. It is perfect for prepping vegetables, doing projects and serving meals while remaining a beautiful piece of furniture and not compromising the storage space in the island. Another example of creativity was turning an unneeded pantry into a beautiful bar area with copper sink, beer/wine fridge and under-counter ice maker. I just love the luxury of that ice maker with the tiny cubes of ice, it makes me smile whenever I scoop ice into a glass or pitcher and I didn't have to sacrifice kitchen cabinet storage to get it! We had a little problem with the paint on the garage floor but JWC re-did it until we got the right material to adhere to the concrete without coming up driving the car in and out. JWC is not the cheapest contractor but I firmly believe you get what you pay for. When the remodel was completed the re-fi appraisal was a little over what I paid for the property plus the extensive remodel, even though re-fi appraisals are notoriously low. Jim and his team are beyond amazing! We found out about Jim through our house's previous owner. Jim had done quite some work on the house before we bought it, and we were really impressed by his previous work, so when we decided that we needed something done, we called Jim. We also did our homework, met and got estimates from a couple of other contractors, but in the end, it's Jim's proven quality of work, fair estimate and his easy-going personality won us over! Jim made sure everything was on track throughout the project. He would stop by in the morning to give instructions to his team and check on the work done on the previous day. He is nothing short of a perfectionist when it comes to his work, Jim knows what would look good and would give honest opinions, which we really appreciated. His crew is very professional and courteous, and they are super thoughtful too. We briefly mentioned to Jim that we'd like them to leave the existing carpet cover behind for our move, his team ended up doing that and covering all the carpet and hardwood floor in the hallway, on the stairs to make sure our newly installed carpet and floor is protected and ready for the move. The work was so high quality from the planning, permits, removal of the old garage and building of the new. We also requested some additional electrical and painting work that they did for us. My parents used Jim Walters construction for several remodel projects in their home in the early 2000's and were always pleased with his work and professionalism. When it was time to remodel the bathrooms in our home last year, I didn't hesitate to call Jim. I am again compelled to applaud the Jim Walters Construction team. This is one of those rare contracting companies that you do not mind welcoming into your home. The first project Jim's team did for me was a remodel of the master bathroom in my condo, and it turned out great. What I really appreciated was the time Jim took to understand the project, talk to me about what I wanted and help me understand the options available. He does a great job of making sure he understands what I wanted and telling me what could be done, and he suggested improvements that hadn't even occurred to me. Once the work began, the attention to detail when his guys prepared to do the work blew me away. Every square inch of the floor was protected before they brought in a single tool, so I was not worried about my hardwood floor at all. They made good progress and cleaned up after themselves every day. In the end I had a bathroom I really liked. The most recent project Jim worked on for me was smaller; my dishwasher had stopped working and I wasn't sure what the problem was. I was worried because the kitchen counter-top that had been installed after the dishwasher would probably not allow for easy removal of the old machine if it needed replacement. So I called Jim and there was no problem -- he figured out how to get it out and directed me to replacement dishwashers that would fit the space. Then his team removed the old machine, installed the new dishwasher (improving the plumbing hookups along the way) and, as always, left the kitchen in immaculate condition. I really appreciated the fact that even though this was a small project the quality of work did not fall off one bit. Like most of us I look around my house and think about remodeling it. Jim Walters and his team simply are the best. Jim remodeled our kitchen, which included moving part of a wall, installing cabinets, granite, appliances etc. He is so experienced, we did not need a designer -- he has worked on so many kitchens he was able to give us suggestions and a plan that we love. Jim stopped by every day to review the quality of his team's work. Jim also remodeled our daughter's bathroom and again did a beautiful job. His attention to detail and follow up on every question deserves an A+. In addition Jim built us a beautiful media cabinet, and bookshelves in two bedrooms and a hallway. Jim and his team did a perfect job installing crown moulding, a custom fireplace mantel and installing LED recessed lighting. He also has replaced all the windows and painted the interior of our home. Jim met with us before each project and could not have been more professional. His bid included an itemized list of each component of the job and the price. He is honest and operates his business with integrity. Each member of his team was hardworking and polite. Every day they cleaned up the area in which they were working. With a family member with severe allergies, his team went the extra mile to eliminate the dust. We've been working with Jim Walters' team on two contracts, one for an extended list of updates to the older home we purchased this year, the other for a very specific project to re-construct several bathrooms at the same time. We've found the attention to detail and quality of work excellent, and the team of workers on Jim's team are extremely nice and helpful guys (they have helped move heavy packages delivered, are very nice to my dog); (some of the trade subcontractors might be a bit less social, but they're typically in and out and supervised by JWC staff). On our remodeling project, we've defined the work as we've gone along, discussed options with Jim and have issued over 10 Change Orders (COs). I review them carefully and they've all been fair. On the very large bathroom project (moving plumbing, walls, windows), we are completely on budget. Where we exceeded or came in less on materials (tile, plumbing fixtures) than the contract allowance, a CO simply adjusted the difference and it's all netted out to be the original number. Now that we're down to minor punch-list items, some of the things I've appreciated most with Jim Walters' team are: - Daily check-in by the project manager, Jesse; frequent stop-ins by Jessica; Jim comes by as needed, usually in planning stages or when major activities are under way. - Fast response by email by Jessica any time there are questions - immediate call or text reply in the case of anything that seems significant - If there are any errors (e.g., paint drips), the team addresses them and corrects them right away, no extra charge - Team is attentive to detail - checks in with placement of hardware, style of trim, every little detail, including things I didn't know anything about until they asked - Recommendations to improve on our original idea, for safety/code/aesthetic reasons We've worked with contractors before for minor remodels, hardware floor installation, etc, and have never had such a positive experience, and this is a major project. There have been a few minor hitches, and the price tag is high, but it's comparable to other high quality contractors who meet/exceed code and for the quality and thoroughness of the team. When I ask about the schedule, they respond, and while we're behind the original timeline, but primarily due to materials orders, etc. Overall, the impression I'm left with is that Jim and his team care about delivering a beautiful renovation and that we'll be happy in our home. We strongly recommend Jim and will almost certainly be working with him in the future. read more

He has a very approachable manner, and is thoughtful and thorough in his bidding process. He brought all his subcontractors in to assess the various facets of the work, and the proposal they put together was impressively comprehensive and very fairly priced. We have worked with Jim's team on several projects on our house, including a significant remodel. Not only are his team members polite and professional, but they are nice folks. They try really hard to minimize disruption and work is done on time (when that's not the case it's because they supplier messed up). All work was high quality and the crew was flexible in order to get us what we want (one cabinet stain went through about four or five sample iterations before the shade was what we wanted). We selected Jim Walters Construction for our complete kitchen and family room remodel. Jim was the first contractor I met with, and while I felt he was a strong match for our needs, I felt compelled to interview others before making a decision. After 3 months of interviewing other contractors, I became more and more confident Jim was the right fit for us. He was punctual and the most responsive, thoroughly discussed our needs and shared ideas, provided a complete and comprehensive proposal, addressed all questions, and was very knowledgeable and realistic about the process and project. Once we started, I was exceptionally pleased with the caliber of his staff. Our project managers were responsive (email, phone and text), approachable, knowledgeable, and very focused on our client satisfaction. This was a great surprise to me as I had not met them in the selection process. They became my critical resources during our project. The specialists who were part of his staff were extremely pleasant. I never once was concerned about any of them working in our home while we were not there. We have an older dog and they all were very accommodating to her. They worked very hard at allowing our life to "continue as normal" during the project. They cleaned up their workspace completely at the end of each day. In comparison to most remodel projects I've heard about, ours was exceptionally smooth, on target and within our budget range - there were no major budgetary surprises or hiccups once we started. While his pricing was not the lowest, paying more of a premium resulted in more of a premium experience. The end result is what we were expecting and Jim's team jumped through hoops to make sure we were able to host holiday gatherings. Since the completion of the project, I've been contacted by the project manager to see if we had any concerns or required follow-ups. Jim Walters remodeled my kitchen about 15 years ago. Recently one of the cabinets his guys installed started sagging and as it turns out it was not secured properly. I called Jim and he sent his guys out to fix it, free of charge, no questions asked. His guys were clean, neat and professional. I have had so many bad experiences with contractors and I am happy to report i have finally found one with integrity. Jim Walters has made my house gorgeous. He is responsible, affiable and again, (most important to me) integrity. He is the poster child of 'deliver on time' with good project management.I don't think i ever heard the word 'no' once b/c he always found a reasonable 'work - around.' The only thing i would say is get in his queue early because he gets very busy; however he always makes time for us. I especially like that he doesn't gouge the pricing either--very fair. read more

if there work is anything like what they did to there drainage system on their house then forget it. i drive by occasionally and it looks like it drains in 4 different locations. It looks like it can be dangerous especially y when it gets cold. I would be afraid of black ice and people getting into accidents. I've been talking to neighbors and they also would not recommend you. I live on a hill, and would hate to have my drainage look like this and make the neighborhood look terrible I will look for another general contractor. I would hate to be liable if anything like this happened in my neighborhood. I feel sorry for the neighbors up in that ears of San Carlos. If anyone reading this can recommend another contractor that would be great. read more

Jim did some work for us recently. We had the front of our house "face lifted", a new roof, interior painting, hardwood floors done, etc. so quite a bit of cosmetic upgrades. He has about a dozen full time workers. All of them are very nice and were very respectful about cleaning up every day. He also has a network of sub-contractors that he works with who are all great. If you are not happy, just say something and it will get fixed. Sometimes it took a few reminders to get things done, but overall after it was all done, we were thrilled with the results. Even though we went over budget (Jim has great ideas on improvement which we did do over what we had planned), we can say with confidence that we were happy with the results. I am hiring him again next year to do a face lift for my kitchen and laundry room so that should tell you that I highly recommend him. In fact, my 2 neighbors also have hired Jim and crew for help around their house. The only downside is that he is very busy so you have to make sure to get on his schedule! read more
