When the line is out the door - you know you arrived at a great place! Food We had multiple people on our party and everyone left satisfied with smiles on their faces despite the rain. The ice cream was fresh, tasted delicious, with several flavors to pick from. The workers suggested delicious flavors that were the most popular. Their suggestions were on point. The prices were perfect as a good value for the scoops given. I had a waffle cone with black cherry and Mackinac Island fudge. My niece really enjoyed her fudge sundae. She ate it so quick we offered her another scoop. To her it was just realllllly good (and she was full off of the portion). I had the Black Cherry ice cream - HIGHLY RECOMMEND- for it had big chunks of black cherries and a nice mild cherry flavor for the base. It was rich and creamy. Mackinac Island Fudge is also highly noteworthy. It has a velvety vanilla base with thick fudge swirls that will even stick out in a scoop from the generous portions. It pairs perfectly with the Black Cherry. The workers mentioned it is very popular. Cleanliness The floor was even clean even though it was super busy. They used clean scoopers for the ice cream. The workers appeared to follow all food safety guidelines (and go above for cleanliness). They took extra time to wear gloves and go above and beyond for our peanut allergy person. They ensured an excellent experience with their steadfast inspection of ingredients. This resulted in her enjoying her ice cream without a reaction. The bathroom was clean with nice foot pedals for the water dispenser. Service All of the workers there were hard working, cheerful, and friendly. My Uncle enjoyed talking to one worker about the sports she plays. We had several questions and the answered all of them. There was not a slow moment for them (line out the door); however, they kept up their hustle and friendliness. Dogs If you bring your fur babies it appears they need to stay outside. Only service animals are allowed inside. Overall, if you are in Marquette, Michigan, you need to stop or plan on it. There is even a nice flower spot around a cow for pictures. Inside there are multiple tables in front of a wall mural of a cow pasture. Highly recommend for all parties to take the time to stop. Several instagram worthy spots for perfect photos. read more

Ice cream was good, not great, and hospitality was poor. We were the only people at the counter so not very busy on a Friday early evening. First of all, there are no samples very clearly stated by a sign in the door. Not super welcoming start. Then I opened the cheese case to check the price on a block of pizza cheese and there was no price to be found. Not on the package or the shelf. Put that back and went to look at ice cream flavors. We were seated having our ice cream when a couple came in behind us and was offered a free sample bag when they checked out. It looked like a small coffee bag but not sure if it was coffee or some sort of cookie/candy. Anyway, after hearing this my husband went past as we were leaving and asked if he could take a bag. Literally some of the most creamy scoops I have ever had! Some very tasty and fresh ice cream! At the end of a hot summer day, what do you want? That's right, ICECREAM. Even writing this review makes me want to go grab a couple scoops! But we were really craving some home grown local icecream, no Dairy Queen , no baskin robbins. We wanted to go where the locals go! Now this place was tucked away a little bit from the city center, I wish it was closer and more easier to find as it literally looks like it's attached to the factory it comes from. But hey, at least we know it's fresh! There was a long line, it was July 4th so I suppose that was the reason. We were greeted by the line and the sign with TONS of flavors. Anything you could ever want they had, I got my super man icecream and my boyfriend got a cookie dough. Both were amazing. Like I said sooo creamy:)! The staff was friendly, the decor was cow themed as you could see and they had historical facts about Jilberts around the store with other things you could buy such as milk, ice cream cartons and souvenirs. It's an unseasonably hot day in October and we were looking to cap off our activities with a scoop of ice cream. Arrived at 5:45. Closing time 6:00. The door was locked and at least a half dozen customers were turned away. We poked our heads in the "out" door to ask about the situation and were told "we can close our door 15 minutes early because we are so busy". There were about 10 people inside being served. Best ice cream I've ever had. I would open an ice cream store in Chicago or Dallas if I could get this ice cream delivered. It would be well worth paying extra for this top quality product. This is another place I used to visit as a kid. My trip home took me to a bunch of places like that and I had fun showing my husband all the places I loved as a kid! Jilbert's was no exception. I used to visit with my aunt and get my blue ice cream. I love cows and the fact that they had a giant cow for you to take photos with made my dreams come true. It defiantly seemed bigger when I was a kid but it's still pretty big! There's a nice seating area around the cow We went inside and instead of my usual as a kid, my tastes have changed a bit, I went with the coconut and chocolate one. YUM!! Still dreaming of that peanut butter Mackinac Island fudge ice cream. Jilbert's is Michigan ice cream, and this location is "headquarters", so to speak. It looks rather industrial when you pull up because it's where the semis load up and where they process the milk, but inside the little red barn building is the scoop shop! Five stars for the ice cream! Jilbert's had about 20-25 flavors out, and it's creamy and delicious. Mackinac Island fudge is a classic. Sit outside and enjoy your treat on a picnic table under the enormous (like, a story high) plastic cow! Four stars for the experience. The service was just meh and not super friendly. My Yooper friend has been talking about this place for years and as we drove by during the night with the lit up Jilly on the roof, we knew we had to go the next day! I was very impressed by how ginormous the fudge pieces were in the ice cream. Very very large, which is exactly how they should be. My friend was telling me that when they changed management a few years ago they started making them smaller but there was such a backlash that they started making them giant again. Thanks community! I got the cherry fudge ice cream (with the huge pieces) and it was delightful. I love cherry ice cream and this might be my favorite now. Personally I think Jilbert has some of the best ice cream in the U.P. If you venture south of the bridge or into Wisconsin, I'm sure they'd put up some fierce competition but as long as you're in the Yoop, make sure you stop here and try it out for yourself. It is a little out of the way and hard to find, but do yourself a favor and seek it out; It will be worth it. You get an ample amount of ice cream for the price you pay. It is creamy and flavorful with at least 24 flavors to choose from at any given time. Their "special sundae" is always a bargin @ $2.25 for a scoop of ice cream, a topping, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry. Their building however, from the dipping area to the dining room, needs a modern update. It looks like no one cares about the century old wooden tables that are split down the middle with years of dried drips of ice cream and sprinkles lodged in between. Or the chairs that will fall straight back if you don't sit on them just right. The viewing area down the hall is a really neat touch, where you can actually see the workers bottle the milk, but, please make it smell nice at least! Every time I walk in there I smell a pungent odor that makes me question where my milk is coming from. They have an array of different packaged ice cream, milk, and other dairy products, as well as a few shelves of "U.P. made" items for purchase. The patio is very nice to sit on outside by the giant cow. In the summer the flowers and plants make it a very relaxing place to enjoy your ice cream treat. It was only about 20 degrees outside but we didn't care, we are huge ice cream fans and try to find local places. A single scoop is quite large for the price. Best ice cream in the Michigan UP! If they had Jilbert's in Chicago, I could see Baskin-Robbins applying for Chapter 11. Jilbert's is not just an ice cream shop, it is a dairy. They have their own milk and distribute their products all over Michigan. The thing about their ice cream is that it has big chunks of good stuff in it, whether it's fudge, cookie dough, peanut butter, or whatever. They probably got about 30 flavors. Even their 2% milk tastes creamier than the usual milk I find around here in Chicago. The dairy is located behind a mall off of the main road towards Marquette (behind Shopko). The building is easy to spot, since it is their trademark red barn with a giant fiberglass cow (Jill) standing proudly next to some picnic tables outside. I use to love this place...I mean love this place...like rave about how good the ice cream was, how it was made by hand. How no place in the country could touch it. Well I went back to Marquette for a visit and swore that I would stop by and get my favorite ice cream Moose tracks. After one bite...I knew something was different. It did not taste the same, it tasted like your normal generic boxed crap ice cream. So I went and asked my father what the story was. He said several years back Jilbert's got bought out by a huge corporate company..I think he said it was Dean foods. I would say this is a perfect example of corporate America ruining something as pure as snow from the sky...instead of real pieces of Reese's peanut butter cups in the ice cream when I got to the bottom it was these little pods of peanut butter covered with chocolate. So disappointing... John Jilbert you should be ashamed of yourself for selling out. I would say I will probably never stop here again on a trip home. The novelty is gone. read more
