It has been six years since I reviewed this Jewel. While I am not the primary shopper in my home, I do go here about once a month. I prefer other stores for many reasons. Jewel is expensive - with stores like Aldi nearby, if you simply need staples, it's much less expensive to go elsewhere. What I do like about Jewel is it is convenient, they have a nice produce department as well as meat and fish counters. More so, being both dairy and gluten-free, they always have something there I can get, whether frozen or boxed. Often, I'll strike up conversations with employees. I've only had one tell me they truly enjoy working there. But, they do offer jobs to people who need them, and I often see differently abled people working the registers, bagging, or cleaning. I find that they hire differently abled folks refreshing and raises my rating a little. read more

We shop here 3 times a week. For the last 2 months the Broccoli has been looking brown, wilted and starting to smell. It almost looks like there was change in the manager. I heard from a source at Jewel that they leave it out all night? Don't seem to care. We have tried to buy Broccoli 6 times and it's not getting better. i've been going to the jewel since it's opened and the employees have for the most part not changed and they are becoming the most sour ignorant type of people I've ever met from needing help in the middle of the store to the woman ringing me up. There was leftover change in the change return as I went to take it, they said I was stealing. it was left behind and it was .40 some cents. I'm sorry that's not stealing so what now you can keep it? it's just petty. asbi go in the day after Halloween to ask for discount on candy and I'm told it's all gone? read more

Avoid this location, unless you like expired food, and misleading product info on shelves. 1. They routinely, and per policy, keep expired food on the shelves. Especially pre-packaged meats, and dairy products. I say it must be policy, because when I move the expired items to the bottom of the pile (especially meats), and come back the next day, the expired stuff is all back on top, meaning employees are doing it on purpose. To find great examples yourself, go to the refrigerated section that holds hotdogs, and pre-packed lunchmeat. 2. In case you're not aware, shrinkflation is a thing now. That means reducing the amount of product in the package, without making the consumer aware, and in some cases raising the price at the same time. This location has many such products on their shelves, but they haven't changed the "Price per ounce" labels on the shelves. So, if something used to be 15oz, but got reduced to 13oz, the shelf label still shows 15oz. 3. When you order groceries for pickup from this location, pretty much everything they put in your bags is on the brink of expiring. I finally stopped ordering from them, because this happened every, single, time. 4. The employees are always friendly, and helpful. I have nothing bad to say about them. The quality of the produce is just awful. I don't blame this store for the bad produce. The blame is 100 % on the corporate buyer. They buy low quality produce in an attempt to maximize profits. If I need two potatoes to make mashed mashed potatoes, I end up buying three because parts of the potatoes are black and rotten. If i need one avocado, I buy two because one will be rotten. The produce in this place is a joke. They should be ashamed, but they have no shame. read more

I get the feeling that this Jewel is going downhill fast. Some employees are very friendly and helpful, others act like they are overworked and you are just a bother to them. I specifically refer to the deli counter. I go most often at lunch and they often act like they have 1,000 things to do besides actually serve customers. The hot foods are almost always out and there are customers looking to buy. I don't know why they don't drop chicken etc. before noon to make sure they aren't doing it during lunch rush. I've seen a lot of people walk away because they ran out of something before even 12:10, in fact I've done it myself. They either need to hire more staff or teach them to prep for lunch better, they shouldn't be in the back making salads or running to get stock while customers are waiting for food to cook that should have already been done. read more

My experience at Jewel's has now convinced me to shop at Aldi's, Eurofresh, and Mariano's. After 30 years in this neighborhood I am DONE. The deli is so unpleasant I am done being at the mercy of staff that ignore you, are rude to you and the last time told me their meat in the case was old and spoiled but later said that was a joke. I fail to see the humor. Jewel is not cheap. I will drive a longer distance to avoid the nasty deli staff. I am not paying to be treated like crap any longer. This place is really big and so clean. Everything here is so easy to find, they literally have all the things we might looking for, and they have so many great deals. All of the employees here are so friendly, helpful, and professional. All of them are treating and guiding all of their customers in a right way. they are listening to the customers and answering questions. All of them are so happy to help and assist their customers. This Jewel-Osco also offers a cheaper prices for fresh veggies and fruits. Even their other items has a great deals, promos, discounts, and other of it is in sale. You can save a lot here compared when you are going to buy at other stores around. Such a very nice grocery store with an extensive selection of groceries, liquor, and other items. Unfortunately this Jewel location needs to do a better job training their employees. I don't think the employees understand what rotating products mean. Their produce area is beyond horrific. We've expired products left on their display, when it should've been removed 1-2 weeks ago. Majority of their employees are high school or college employees. Their professionalism are beyond being fixed. The meat department should receive training how to rotate product. We have found old meat (gray) in the coolers numerous times. We travel to Meijers in Rolling Meadows despite the distance. Jewel can learn a thing or two from that location. read more

The pharmacy dept constantly misunderstands and confuses things. They've told me I had no refills left when I do. They are not thorough and don't know how to research into a file. Sophie is an awful pharmacist who is always in a bad mood. She shouldn't be working with customers. She violated HIPPA by badmouthing me to one of my relatives that came in to pick up her Rx. OWNERSHIP---- please remodel this store!!!!!!! Do yourself a favor and drive the few extra miles to Marianos. This grocery store has many employees that need an attitude adjustment, most of the grocery carts don't work properly, they're out of many items and they just say "we ordered that a couple weeks ago", for the area this store is located it should be MUCH nicer/cleaner/fully stocked. Got told I can't buy a product on sale today. There is no limit on the advertisement and got hassled by the manager for buying too much. Don't run the sale or put a limit on the product. Will be reporting to the bbb also. This has never happened to me in America before. A manager pulls you aside after you paid for the items and asks you what you are doing with food items. I must have missed the law that states I need to report what I do with food items to jewel-osco employees. He told me not to buy said item again. He states he was losing money. Such bad customer service. Even when you follow the fine print and pay for the items you treat the customers badly. No wonder Mariano's is stealing your market share. I've given this Jewel 5 stars before. My 1 star belongs to their bakery. Ordered a cake for my daughter's baby shower. Picked it up an hr and a half before the event. It was hideous. Looked like little kids decorated it. I was so embarrassed to put it on display at the shower that I asked the wait staff to take it in the back room and keep it covered until it was time to serve it. I asked for a full sheet cake with Bavarian filling. The bottom layer was 1/2" thick, filling oozing out throughout and the top layer, 2" high was smeared with 3/4" thick, dry frosting. The cake looked nothing like the sample photo of what I was supposed to get. I loved their cakes in the past and recommended them numerous times. Since this cake looks like kindergartners made and decorated it, I won't recommend their bakery again. read more

We have been going to this store ever since it opened in North Hoffman Estates many years ago -- and like the convenience of having it here and open from 6 AM to midnight. It is five minutes from our home, less than a mile away and was certainly a welcome addition to the neighborhood. We have lived in our home since late 1977 and didn't have a nearby supermarket for a very l-o-n-g time. We have never experienced anything but a professional staff and excellent quality food. Our favorite cashier there is Janice! We like this store's generics -- and sales. Their deli, produce department, bakery, floral department, and pharmacy are all good. Their custom birthday cakes are tremendous, and we have enjoyed their roasts and chicken, etc. We cannot give this store five stars only because of our definitely being able to beat the prices overall at Target and Wal-mart and other places. I have been coming here for many years. Lately I have ventured out to Target, Wal-Mart & Mejier or Mariano's. It wasn't till I ventured to these other places that I realized Jewel's selection isn't that great & the prices are higher. Certain microwavable food can be a dollor or more expensive each. They don't have as many sauces as Meijers & their food isn't always the freshest. Over the years I have had a few experiences where I have bought milk only to get home & realize that it expired that day or the next day. I have also bought meat here that wasn't that fresh either. Lastly I have had many experiences where the staff was either rude or just didn't seemed that interested to help me but at the same time I have had even more experiences where the staff was very friendly & helped me find what I was looking for or helped me if I forgot my Jewel Preferred Card at check out. The place isn't bad but there are places with better prices & more options. read more

Always a frustrating shopping trip! Customer service shouldn't be so difficult to comprehend. When there is only one register open and the person in front of you asks to have someone go check an item (everything comes to a halt) so we are ALL waiting! The extra cashier is putting stickers on the end cap and sees what's happening but won't open her lane. If she's not empowered to make that decision for her self then management should figure something out. ( we are talking about a full grown adult woman here). Obviously, it didn't take long for the line behind me to stack up with people waiting. As soon as a manager arrives on the scene, they put not one but two more people in registers. read more

This is about Osco Pharmacy at this location. I've been coming to this jewel forever, I've had no problem picking up my prescription from here until today. I transferred my medication from a downtown location at least 4 hours ago. I called my jewel, they hadn't even put it into the system to get it started. I showed up and they said it'll be about 15-20 minutes. I come back about 20 minutes later, they said another 5-10. No one else was there picking up medications (I'm sure they're busy doing other things but still). They call me up and tell me they don't have the prescription. Waste of my time. Don't come here if you're transferring medicine within a day. read more

Went to this Jewel the past two Sundays. A week ago I noted several employees with their masks (PPE) worn below their nose. They were being worn like this intentionally and was not a result of the mask slipping down. On Sunday, May 10, several employees were still wearing their masks this way. In the deli my wife was ordering some meat and cheese and an older individual not only had his mask below his nose, his gloves had holes in them. His finger tips were exposed! Clearly no regular washing of his hands was taking place. As he weighed the cheese his nose was inches from the scale. This meat and cheese was left on a shelf. I was livid so didn't call him on it at the time it was happening. Pulled my wife aside to discuss and as I did this employee was seen placing the cheese back into the freezer display, MASK ON HIS CHIN CHEWING/EATING SOMETHING AS HE DID! Everything he touched was potentially tainted. Several other employees were wearing their masks with nose uncovered. I intend to notify corporate in hopes this and other Jewel-Osco stores will comply with CDC guidelines. If we go again next week and nothing is done, I intend to clandestinely take video and let the public be the judge. Perhaps notify local news. read more

So glad to see other bad reviews, I thought it was just me. I go to this store when I have to because it seems to be the only one that is near my home. Others are Barrington or Target in Hoffman Est. I lived here for over 35 years and the store is going down because they think they are the only game in town and do not care about the customer. They remodeled but they should have re-staffed...just putting face paint on a pig. My issues are food safety. Three times I have tried to buy yogurt but it was expired by 20 days, then 10, and 5 days. All three times I complained to the manager just got a "sorry" with no care or offer to give me a coupon or discount. It makes me wonder what else is old. Suggestion if you must shop here buy items that do not spoil, check the dates and do yourself a favor as shop somewhere else. Heinens in Barrington off Barrington Road, a difficult to get into but worth the great food items or even Jewel in Barrington is better. Whole Foods and Marianos (a bit pricey). Maybe some day we, in North Hoffman Estates will get our own Whole Foods or Fresh Market, Caputo! read more

Honestly just a terrible store and Jewel wonders why they are going down the drain compared to Marianos. Just terrible service, 3/4 of the time I am there, customers are bagging, literally bagging their WHOLE order. I always seem to have to bag too. Also I've seen people get turned away who are 21 but have not gone to the DMV yet to renew license and they shoo them away like pig. It says their DOB and their renewel date, I THINK you can sell them beer...I haven't shopped here and will not for a long time. The only reason I still go here is because it is so close to my home. Now that I shop other stores, i.e., Target, Walmart, Euro Fresh, Caputo, Whole Foods and now Marianos, I see how much more expensive and limited Jewel is for providing my shopping needs. It wasn't until Marianos in Arlington Heights opened that I am now really comparing prices. The produce appears fresher and much cheaper than Jewel. I pay $1.99 per bag of Fresh Express Salad greens at Marianos and now $2.99 at Jewel. That is only one example of many. The person who works the Meat/Seafood counter at Jewel should not be in that position. He is not friendly nor is he helpful. He was very put out when I asked him to help me put 2 pieces of pork roast together to make 3 pounds. He is not service oriented and should not be dealing with customers! Numerous times I've asked for Jewel to try and locate specific items for me, told someone would order them and call me. Three different occassions and I had to keep following up with them. Each time I gave up and went elsewhere for product. Jewel will have to keep up with their competition in order to survive in our area. I know a lot of people who live near this Jewel, but shop at Euro Fresh. With Marianos opening in Palatine next year, Jewel will really be hurting if they don''t change things. read more

I hardly go grocery shopping but my wife does. i have recently gone to this Jewel and they are being more competitive to the other grocery stores. i like how they have freshly squeezed OJ now and have remodeled the store. I live in the area and will continue to support this jewel. I know some prices are higher at times, but when then have sales it is reasonable. Plus they have a redbox there too. read more

Just returned a package of smoked turkey leg which was purchased previous day(10/13/2018 @ 12:54pm, REF#89001040150), found many moldy spots on the meat and it won't be safe to cook with. The Jewel at 1485 Palatine road Hoffman Estates. Every-time I go to the meat department the old man is as rude as they come. It took me 6 times but this was my last time that put me over the edge. I asked about a sale and he said we were out. Can I have a rain check? NO! As we walked away he said in a load voice ( GOOD ). Not sure what Jewel is doing but I'm a done with this store.
