The staff members are nice, but I didn't have a great experience here. I wanted to get my glasses prescription done here. Spoke to the owner, I believe, who said it would cost $700. I called a dozen other places. Got them filled for $80 elsewhere, and that included a backup pair. A lot of people told me that this place overcharges, but I didn't believe it until I experienced it myself. That said: They've been in business for a long time, so despite being more expensive than most other optical stores, they're clearly serving their clientele well. Clean store, I sometimes buy their cleaning cloths and cleaning liquid for the lenses. Good stuff. read more

David is complete liar and a thief. They overcharge for all services, products and lie straight to their customers faces. After only going to this business for my contacts my entire life, they clearly don't value loyal customers and run a half-assed business. Without even checking the status of the product that I needed ordered - he says to me the product will be delivered in 4 days. After giving them the benefit of the doubt after not receiving the product for two weeks, he has some bogus excuse that they were back ordered. If you knew they were back ordered why wasn't I told sooner or given the courtesy to know that they weren't going to arrive when he said they would be. A good business would have placed the order, realized the order was back ordered and called the client to inform them. Instead I was subjected to a series of lies between him and Kasia. Fast forward another week and a half, no contact from them at all. I call on a Friday and am told that they have been shipped and will be delivered on the following Monday. Here it is today on a Wednesday and I still do not have the product I was told I would receive nearly a month ago. I called today and he gives me a tracking number and says "give it a few minutes to get in the system. It's showing they overnight shipped it." Tracking number was given to me 30 minutes ago and it still doesn't come up on the shipping service's website. Another LIE. David got his panties in a twist when he got called out on overcharging and tried to argue that they didn't over charge and that suppliers online couldn't possibly be selling contacts at a dramatically lower price than they do (LIE). He also claimed that because they order directly from the manufacturer they wouldn't be old contacts with an earlier expiration date. Had David and his staff gave any care or thought to running a quality business, they would know that someone who wears contacts daily goes through contacts in the amount of time they buy the supply for. Never mind looking at my records to see I order contacts for a year approximately ever 14 months. So his point that getting contacts that have an earlier expiration date is just a back track to cover for his crappy service and ignores the fact that him and his business partners lie to customers with no problem. Go to Jewel Optical if you don't want fair pricing and quality service. What a shame and embarrassment to the community and neighborhood. I can't imagine how many other low/middle income families they rip off on the daily. read more

I never leave reviews but if I can help someone avoid this place I will. It isn't even worth the one star I'm forced to give. First off my husbands union told us we had to use the union eye dr, little did we know there was 2 in the parking lot. We told Jewel Optical that the day we got there and they said that always happens and they'd see us as well as a lot of union workers use them. We didn't think anything of it at the time. The day of wasn't bad until the bill came out. They charged $175 for the eye exam which I've never been charged for at any other place and I've been wearing glasses for 20+ years. They charged me double ($299) to shave the lenses due to my high prescription and double ($150) for the anti glare. I walked out spending basically $1200 out of pocket. I went to get TWO second opinions both of which I showed the bill and said even with designer frames it shouldn't have been anymore than $600. No discounts were applied from Jewel Optical. It took TWO months to get my glasses and about 4 follow up phone calls (from my end). When they were finally ready I let them know I was coming from Long Island as it takes around an hour to get there. I got there and when I was handed my glasses they were falling off my face. The guy kept telling me it wasn't bad, and I kept saying it was terrible and I'm not leaving until they are fit to my face. He kept going in the back to make it look like he was fitting them when in reality they didn't have anyone there to fit the glasses. If they told me that no one was there from the start this wouldn't have even been an issue and I would've just came when someone was there but they didn't say anything. It wasn't until he physically started bending the $600 frames that I lost it. He told me it was my face not the frames meanwhile it was him. He told me to just come back on the weekend which was absolutely not happening. I then went to a place in Roslyn (third place after Jewel I went to) to have them fit my glasses and they informed me the lenses that were used on my frames cost about $30 and were not the right lenses and that the frames they charged me full price on were long discontinued. I've never had a worse experience in my life at an eye doctor. Please stay away! read more

I took my boy there 2 years ago, who was 8 at the time. The optician was good. The male, whom I believe was the owner, about 40 years old, was the most obnoxious, nasty ,& rude person. I don't exactly remember how long I have been a client of this exceptional business. It's quite probably around 12 years, or perhaps even longer! There are many other optical and opticians within walking distance to my place. I have checked them out and walked away empty handed and totally dissatisfied. I even used to go to Manhattan to take care of my eyes, until one day I decided to enter to check out that unassuming place called Jewel Optical, which seats very humbly in a what basically is a strip mall located at Parsons Boulevard and Jewel Avenue. I work within walking distance from them and I had gone that mall to purchase some vitamins at a drugstore. Since it was way pass the time for me to have my eyes examined and upgrade my battered eyeglasses, I sarcastically told myself: "What the heck! Let me check out these people and silently laugh at their generic cr__py inventory." But this is what happened: I was met with a huge, warm and welcoming very sincere smile. I was showered with a completely focused attention. All my questions were professionally and clearly answered. There was an spontaneous friendly vibe exchanged between the young fellow employee and the elder potential customer, me! (Later I found out that he is the owner!) I was shown frames that matched my the shape and cuts of my face, personality and style! Very unexpectedly, I found my optical place! I walked out of that store extremely happy! And this is what happens to me whenever I visit Jewel Optical; I always walk out extremely happy! The actual staff is just as good and amazing! Jewel Optical has never failed me! I know that I can always relay on them when it's a matter of dealing with my eyes and I am always, always confident that they will look out after me and my very personal and specific needs! What a disappointment. I've been going to Jewel Optical since I was 9 years old, 15 years now and you would think the owner would be a little more loyal to his customer base. Throughout the years I have been reckless with glasses and this company has profited handsomely due to my irresponsibility, that is well over 15 pairs of glasses. I originally went there for convenience, it was a block from my house and the previous owner was very understanding. However, times have changed I suppose. A year ago, I had purchased an updated eye exam and a pair of glasses which were pretty cheap although it cost in total well over a hundred dollars, no problem. Only, recently I have discovered some reasonably priced glasses on-line, so I go in asking for my prescription to purchase these glasses, I discover that I not only need my prescription but a PD measurement. So I'm thinking, fine, I've been a customer for 15 loyal years I'll request this information and try out these glasses on-line. Yeah, so it wasn't that simple, instead the owner tells me that he will charge me $40 dollars for taking my PD measurement, a measurement that I paid for more than 15 times in full throughout 15 years and I have to pay for it? He continues to give me a sob story about how the on-line companies are buying from China and he uses American companies. So, I explain to him that I have been a loyal customer and so out of respect all I ask for is a discount on what is technically already mine, and he tells me that it doesn't matter, he won't give it to anyone. Afterwards, I explain I will be in shortly to pick up just the prescription because according to him only the doctor could give it to me in person and not him over the phone, yet when I get to the office he gives it to me and the doctor isn't even in. Once there, he proceeds to tell me about how the machine is worth $2000 and they are not going to just give the PD away for free. HUH?! I asked for a courtesy discount for 15 years of loyal service of which I paid for the PD many times for him to even send to the manufacturer to customize my glasses. I don't push it, I take my prescription, thank him for the service and leave. Afterwards, I call a location in Astoria that I never even been to once in my life, they tell me that they usually give the PD measurement to their customers upon request and that they will charge me a minimal fee of $10 for it. They had some nice glasses too, I will be going there for checkups and eventually contact lens from now on. Note** To those wondering what a PD measurement is, it's very important and it measures the distance between one pupil and the next to determine the proper fitting for your glasses. Some eye glass locations refuse to give it because they know you are likely buying glasses on-line, but who cares because it's yours although it seems in some states they are not obligated to give it to you. To me it's like requesting your medical records from your doctor only for him to refuse it because he knows your choosing someone else for primary care. read more
