There are 3 main commercial airlines in Australia. Based on our recent internal flying experiences, JetStar was just OK, Virgin Australia was pretty good, and Quantas was exceptional. Our recent Jetstar flight was from Sydney to Hobart. Check in was a long line and a scrum to get to the check in screens. There were JetStar employees there to help, but they appeared to be somewhat overwhelmed. It also took us awhile to figure out their baggage drop off system and thank heavens that we met the weight requires as they appear to be fairly strict about that. At the gate, our carry-on bags were weighed, although there was some slack provided. Boarding was basically Group 1 as we all crowded in and with surprising efficiency. On Board, the seats were alright and anything we wanted to eat required payment. Our tour group gave us a credit there, so lunch time during the flight was OK. It took awhile though as we were in the middle of the plane and in that "sweet" spot of being the last in line for both food carts moving through the plane. read more

First of all, it was a whole experience getting here... My fault for not looking at my email, etc. But why did I have to go to the international airport for a domestic flight...? Then a crooked taxi cab driver ripped us off driving from the domestic to international terminal because we did not have enough time to hop on the free shuttle. This happened to so many people we met at the Jetstar terminal. Quality/Quantity - Low cost carrier. And they are proud of it. Advertises it aggressively, part of their branding. For the people reading from the US - Think Frontier, Spirit low cost. If you know, you KNOW! Our fault, not theirs, we went over the luggage weight of only 10kg (22 lbs). This applies to BOTH the carry on and backpack together, which I did not know. My two empty bags alone probably weigh 5kg... The penalty was $65AUD, probably more than the cost of our one way flight per person, LOL! Atmosphere - No thrills, no frills. As advertised, you get what you pay for. Service - Minimum service. Cut and pasted from their website (might be outdated...): Our 10-point Customer Guarantee This Jetstar Customer Guarantee applies to all flights operated by Jetstar Airways (JQ) and Jetstar Asia (3K) 1. we arrived at Sydney terminal two airport as a school group excited for our travels to Cairns. Not only will be greeted with a two hour long, 400 person deep line, but also exclusive, executive, and rude Jetstar team members. They asked under age students for IDs when some student students don't even know an idea is. This experience resulted in sick teenagers running to their flights losing their breath. We were in a group of 26. And we almost missed our flight. We had to ask the gate agent to hold the flight open for five more minutes. The trauma doesn't end there though: upon boarding the flight I was greeted by little to no legroom a plane that smelt like shit, rude flight attendant, an incredibly overpriced snacks. AU$10 for a cookie and popcorn? You're a funny jet star. Maybe if you put more work at your customer service you'd actually have a decent airline... read more

This airline is PURE GARBAGE. When I was in Australia and New Zealand last year, they cancelled 4 out of my 5 flights. Absolutely shitty. And they wouldn't even give me enough notice - it was literally the night before (when I was sleeping). Of course they weren't apologetic. At the airport, there was this long ass queue of victims (including myself) who were trying to get flights rebooked. Need I say more. Taking Jetstar would only be OK if you had all the time in the world and could afford a cancellation (or 4 in my case), but if you have a short trip, meeting, school, work, funeral, wedding, etc. to get to, don't take them. Just don't. Complete twats. I hope they go bankrupt. read more

Me and my family had a bad experience with Richard baggage checkin at Adelaide airport yelling at us and telling his employees off for doing their jobs. I received a 50 dollar Jetstar voucher which I'm never going to use (which is chump change to Jetstar) and no information as to how the situation will be dealt with. Additionally I saw a review with another customer having the same experience as me the same afternoon and not being let on his flight. Today, I had a flight scheduled for 2:40pm and was notified at 12:00pm that it was cancelled for "operational requirements" which I'm guessing is code for "we couldn't fill the flight". I am incredibly frustrated, due to the short notice we have been unable to reschedule the flight until 8pm tonight. Because of this we have had to cancel reservations and miss an event, and there is no point on us even going now. If Richard was successful in stopping us from boarding our flight, or something like this were to happen last week, we would have missed our cruise which costed us $12,000. It is evident as to why their flights are so cheap. Needless to say I will not be flying with them again no matter how cheap their flights are or gift cards I'm thrown following this horrible experience. read more

#85 for 2021 I was recommended by my relatives to try Jetstar to travel to Sydney. I was a bit apprehensive. However I have quite a bit of traveling to know to read up on the service. It's important to know what exactly are you getting and what you will be paying extra for. Baggage is the biggest concern. We did that. With that said and because we felt like we knew what to expect we enjoyed our round trip from HNL to SYD. Boarding was boarding. It was handled in an orderly and timely manner. Our hostesses were courteous and nice. Made sure we became familiar with their procedures. Relayed to us what was going to happen and when. Like for meals. I liked the warm meals we received. Of course they weren't great but they were better than other airlines we have traveled on. We did get drinks and a little snack after take off and before landing. Our seats were clean and so were the restrooms. The ac was working fine and I could control the air. Did not mind paying extra for 1 pc of luggage since we were staying for a month. For that it's best to pay online to save you time and not pay the higher fee at the airport. In fact it's just best to pay for everything through their website to save on money. We were checked on a few times but not very much. What did we do to enhance our flight experience? We brought warm clothes in our hand carry to keep us warm. And a battery to power all our electronic devices while on board. We brought some snacks to hold us over between meals. Blinders and ear phones to assist getting the best rest possible on a plane. Downloaded several movies and documentaries prior to boarding. I really like flying on Jetstar. I can see why several of my cousins recommend them. And I look forward to traveling on Jetstar again. read more

Absolutely the worst airline on the face of the planet. Not professional at all. Planes are unclean. Check in staff are rude and check in process is horrible. read more

SYD to HNL This is a budget airline, so don't expect a lot. We paid cheap flight prices knowing that they charge extra money for carry on, luggage, food, blankets, entertainment, etc. I also don't recommend catching budget airlines if you plan to have any layovers or connecting flights. Budget airlines are notorious for delays or cancellations. CHECK IN. When we arrived at the JetStar check-in area, it was a bit hectic. I was shocked to see how long the JetStar line was and of course they didn't have any self-service kiosk for us to use to bypass the long line. Lucky for us, the staff made an announcement that everyone flying to Hawai'i come forward to get checked in and continue on to security. You could tell by other passengers faces they were ticked off that they were being pushed to the side. But I also appreciate that the staff is making sure none of us missed our flight. GATE. Once we finished at check in and got through security, we went to find our gate. I also thought this was weirdly setup. They had our departure gate, fenced off and you had to show your passport and ticket to the designated staff. Anytime you wanted to leave this area you had to show them your passport and ticket to get back in. I thought this was odd because no other gates were fenced off like ours. FLIGHT. It wasn't that bad. I slept through most of it. So, it made the flight feel shorter. Since this is a budget airline, you don't get provided food, entertainment or even a blanket. You can of course purchase these things for extra $$. Honestly if you just prepare for these things ahead of time the flight is fine. read more

The worst airline I have ever experienced. After delaying our flight from Sydney to Bali for 5 hours we finally boarded only to learn after an hour that the pilots fly time has expired and we need to disembark the aircraft and our flight was cancelled. They rescheduled us for the next day at 12 noon and again delayed the flight to 2 pm! We are still waiting to be boarded and honestly I have zero confidence that this flight will take off today. What amazes me is that how an Australian airline be so primitive and unorganized. I will never fly with Jetstar and make sure everyone is aware how terrible they are. read more

useless company. staff very rude and try to charge you for excess luggage although their own scale shows no excess luggage

This is the first and only negative review I've ever written. I hate to do this, but I feel the need to warn other American consumers about this budget airline. The nickle-and-diming of this company is very strange to an American. Maybe Aussies are used to do this treatment, but it's quite frustrating for foreigners. Want to sit together with your family? Extra $7 per person to get an assigned seat. Want some water or a beverage/snack on the plane? Expect to pay. Have a bag that is just over 7kg, you guessed it. The last one is the most infuriating. I tried online through multiple different browsers to pay for a checked bag that exceeded 7kg. The website does not work when you try to add a checked bag after booking (here's a screencast for proof: https://screencast.com/t/LWVvYQhwo) But if you show up without pre-purchasing, they charge you $60 at the gate. No exceptions. Even though their website doesn't allow you to purchase checked luggage after your initial purchase. It's not their fault, it's yours. Now pay $60 per checked bag or your bag's not going on the flight. Welcome to Cairns. When you add up all their shenanigans, the total cost of their cheap fare becomes an expensive one. Everyone I interacted with on their staff is friendly (which is why they get 2 stars in my book). It's the company policies that are ridiculous. read more

I purchased suitcases that were specifically carry on size with the inches clearly defined on the tags of these new suitcases. They were exactly the measurements that were allowed as carry on size, but when we got to the airport the agents measured and said they were 2 cm too big and charged us a hefty price almost 10000 yen to check the bags in. I told them the size is NOT over the limit, but the agent said they measure 2 cm too big, I didn't stuff the bags they were for a 2 day trip, I should have left the tags on the suitcases that clearly say they are the correct carry on size, although that may not matter as they are measuring with a tape measure. I specifically shopped around to get the right measurements for this flight! At the security checkpoint the agent there was also so confusing and annoying. Due to the hiccup and being sent WAY back to the front of the airport to check in and pay for our luggage we had only 15 minutes until boarding time. The security checkpoint agent says to back off, use a specific bin, not the one in front of us, so we remove our items from the bins and move them ONE over (as if that made such a huge difference) and we thought we were supposed to remove our shoes and put in the bins (normal procedure for other airports) but he gets mad and instead of voicing what to do he just gets mad and starts getting slippers for us that we don't need we are in a RUSH and he knows this as they are calling everyone to go to the gate, so my teenage son doesn't know what to do and puts on the slippers for the FIVE steps to get through this vague yet controlling process. We made it onto our flight but were so stressed out it really ruins the trip for us, we are not traveling for work we are trying to have a nice vacation and don't need this kind of unnecessary, absolutely ridiculous treatment at the airport. The baggage fees were much much higher than our ticket price. I would have taken ANA or JAL or whatever prestigious airlines if I was going to pay so much to fly Jetstar. Baggage fees in general are an extra cost, charging such an outrageous fee for baggage higher than the actual ticket price itself is unacceptable, that is insane. I will complain on all social media sites so everyone knows what a scam this company is! The agents were all robotic, they have NO feelings or they're control freak bullies that get enjoyment out of inconveniencing customers and making them run all over the airport and taking as much money as they possibly can. I will tell everyone to away from this airline at all costs. Just stick to the large name airlines. Never ever again! read more

This is a review of their services departing Sydney Airport: 1. SYD to CNS: 2/5 The clerk who checked in our bags at the domestic terminal was rude. Only having been on the international Jetstar flights, my party and I was not aware that we were able to print out our boarding passes at one of the booths. When we got up to the counter and the clerk had asked us for our tickets, she rolled her eyes when we had expressed a misunderstanding. And on top of that, our check-in and carry on baggage was overweight (we weighed it beforehand and it was actually fine). But after some shuffling, she let us through. Our flight left on time, but even though it was a 3-hour flight, the flight attendants didn't come through with a beverage cart, nor gave out small snacks. What. Even budget airlines in the U.S. do that. Whatever. 2. SYD to HNL: 3/5 Wow. That queue was the longest I've ever had to wait in. I timed it-- I came in 3 hours early for my flight but waited in the queue for 1 hour. And I was traveling solo! The queue was the check-in for flights departing for Ho Chi Minh City, Denaspar, and Honolulu towards the end of winter, so you could imagine that there would be a lot of people boarding. But because it was so busy they only bothered weighing my check-in luggage. That meant that my snacks/meals for my long-haul red-eye flight back home made it! The flight attendants on board were easy to work with even though there were no small snacks (yet again). There was a beverage cart, and they did willingly fill up my cup noodle with hot water so I could have a "proper" meal. OVERALL- 2.5: I wouldn't mind flying Jetstar again just for the sake of my budget, but I'll come better prepared with lightweight bags and snacks galore, as I did before. read more

The first thing that you need to remember when booking a flight on Jetstar Airlines, is that they are a "BUDGET" airline in every sense of the word. That being said, and bearing the above statement in mind, we booked our flight in the international business section of the aircraft, and this was an excellent decision on our part. The price was right as well. In business you don't have to pay for anything including the bags. Food was hot, and the drinks cold. The seats were great, equivalent to the domestic business class seats on Hawaiian or Delta., and you can enjoy the Qantas lounge (at least when we traveled you could). In coach, the amenities are very limited, but at the extremely discounted prices to Australia, I would expect nothing less. Yes, you have to pay for your drinks , entertainment and food, but you save tons of money. YES, I copied and pasted this. Sydney is their home city, so it's only fair that they get a positive rating as well. read more

Absolutely CRAP! $65 for THEIR MISTAKE!!! I booked my flight from Melbourne to Newcastle and had also prepaid for checked baggage - in case I needed to use it. I arrived at Melbourne airport at about 2pm (my flight was not until 4:25pm) and I went to the checkin area. A JetStar member weighed my bags on their scales and advised they were under the limit and fine to take on board. They checked me in and off I i say in the airport for several hours until my flight. When my flight was called, I went to gate 51 where the staff weighed my bags again. The Jetstar staff member advised me they were OVER and I now had to pay an excess baggage fee. I requested to speak to the team leader as there must be a mistake somewhere as: 1. Jetstar had already weighed my bags and advised they were under weight 2. I had already prepaid for checked baggage I didn't use as Jetstar had advised they were under 3. If I had to check in my carry on I would have had NO ISSUE as I had prepaid and it would have saved me lugging it around the airport for several hours I had followed all the steps to ensure I was doing the right thing. The Team Leader ("Michelle"who wouldn't given me any other information so she could be identified) refused, saying it was my fault and I had to pay $65 on top of the prepaid checked bagged I had already purchased and would have been happy to use!!! She then further advised "she wasn't authorized to waive it" which is a direct lie. WHAT A JOKE! Horrible customer service experience! This is probably one of the worst airlines. Be ready to be treated like shit and be disrespected. I had a staff member tell me my luggage was all set and had another person charge me because it was overweight. It was $60, my bag weighed 9 kilos and the limit was 7 kilos. When I noticed other flyers with much bigger bags go through I asked why they didn't pay and the staff told me that it was because some people sneak in and they can't watch everything that happens. I was in shock by her answer. Worse flying experience EVER. If I wasn't international and knew more about Australian airlines I would've known better than to use this airline! COMPLETE TRASH! I have never in my life gotten pissed off enough by a company so much that i decided to take the time to write a negative review until now. I've had horrible customer service, terrible products, you name it... and I still wouldn't write a review because I just didn't care enough, until now. I had a connecting flight from Christchurch, NZ to Auckland, NZ at 5:50 (arrive 7:10PM) and a flight from Auckland back home internationally (departure 11:55PM). First flight gets canceled due to engineering failure. I was told by two different check-in girls two separate times that I can take a later (7:40PM departure, arrive 8:05PM) and if i miss my flight back home, they will accommodate me in Auckland. I figure no problem, still plenty of time. Plane gets delayed 25 minutes, then an hour due to weather/traffic control. Out of their control, I understand. I'm getting nervous cause the time to catch my international flight home is getting very tight. As we are on the plane ready for take off, there is a baggage error announcement due to Jetstar error after everyone was already seated. It takes an extra 23 minutes to fix and now there is no way I can make my flight back home. It's 11:30PM by the time we land and there are multiple people on the plane who have thus missed their connecting flights same as myself. The flight attendants make some calls, but ultimately tell us they can't do anything since everyone (customer service) left. The worst part that was the nail in the coffin for me writing this review, was that they basically told four separate passengers to fuck off and try solve it tomorrow leaving us stranded. Literally had no care in the world, no apology, and you could feel the idgaf aura from these people. Long story short, I've traveled with them before. It's fine until they screw up and when they do it'll be a nightmare. There's a reason they are the cheapest and their customer service reflects it. Save yourself the trouble and don't even give them the possibility of screwing you over. read more

The first and only time I flew on Jetstar was from Sydney to Hamilton Island. As a budget airline, I was impressed by the fluidity of their operations at both airports and the general friendliness of the staff. At the check in counter in Sydney's Kingsford Airport, the employee was very funny and sarcastic, especially when I was hesitant to check in one of my bags instead of carrying it with me. Based on my experience with terrible airlines in the US, especially on domestic flights, I always try to avoid checking my backs since there's a high probability of them getting lost. When I humorously mentioned that to the Jetstar attended, she hilariously replied 'this isn't America, we're better.' So I checked my bag and it found its way safely to Hamilton Island. Flying Jetstar made me realize that just because an airline is 'budget' doesn't mean that they have to sacrifice customer service and reliability. Sure, there wasn't any free food on the flight, but I don't consider that something to complain about. The plane I flew on was brand new and it was a very smooth flight. Despite hearing mixed reviews about the airline, my experience was a good one. read more

LITERALLY THE WORST AIRLINE I HAVE EVER FLOWN WITH!!! There's a reason why they have bad reviews. The so called "low price" before all the hidden fees are not worth it. Go with a more reputable airline and the price is relatively the same when you calculate Jetstar's fees for baggage, food, entertainment, legroom, etc. In addition, they have no clue what customer service is. At check-in, the agent in her native language called me "stupid" when I'm trying to explain to her that I had 15kg baggage purchased because I had to explain several times when she didn't understand. * Anything but star quality service. * Really a shame because the aircraft is relativity new & seemed well maintained. * The gate staff were rude and unpleasant and seemed to hate their jobs. * Each person were only allowed 7kg of total carry on-- this included bags, back-packs, purses, hand bags etc. Obviously we were not aware of the policies but the staff could have been a little more respectful & mindful that not everyone is aware of the policy. So rather than being a bit sympathetic, we were met with down right rudeness in a very harsh authoritative manner. These people didn't give a rats ass about anything. * We were charged a hefty $65 AUD for additional 7kg even though our combined party of five people went over 2kg's. * The Flight from Adelaide to Perth cost $615 AUD ($423 USD) per person and the flight time was three hours, during that time you would imagine they serve complimentary drinks/snacks to a certain degree -- nope nothing. * Though the flight was not sold out and there were plenty of open seats including the entire back row as we were seated second to the very last row of the plane and one member of our party felt nauseous due to the cramping seats but more so due to another passenger seated in front of her due to very bad body odor. When asked if she can take one of the 6 open seats in the very last row, the flight attendant simply dismissed it exclaimed "no, these seats are to remain empty due to airline regulation." * This same flight attendant that previously said no an hour earlier, then occupied one of those open seats, ate her meal, read a magazine and took a short nap. When I questioned her why she wouldn't let a nauseated passenger occupy an empty seat but it was okay for her to use it, she barked back and said "sir, please turn around and put on your seatbelt". I pushed back and now she was irritated and got up and forcefully put the tray back in its place and walked away. * Just before landing, the head flight attendant got on the mic and asked for donations to help needy children- great cause, I'm all for that but perhaps changing the policy and taking care of your PAYING customers first should be a priority. * One of the worse service airlines ever, fly at your own risk-- * Not worth 1 star! read more

Jetstar Airways - This is the worst airline servicing Asia Pacific. - Airlines Near Me - Mascot, NSW

Jetstar manages to make the budget airline experience part of the holiday rather than a cheap-and-nasty alternative to the 'real' thing. There must be a Jetstar briefing manual that requires staff to behave in a professional but laidback manner, and to use humour to interact with passengers and avert clashes and dissatisfaction. Our pilot certainly sounded almost as pleased to be flying toward the sunshine as we were. But then, I chose to fly with Jetstar to a holiday destination. It was a bit mystifying that at the airport there were dedicated check-in lines for Queensland holiday destinations, whilst a trailing queue awaited check-in for the commuter destinations. Onboard, seating was a bit tight, which again, is fine for a holiday flight but would be testing if you actually needed to get the laptop out and work. And whilst I totally understand the concept of 'pay-for-what-you-use', surely it is more cost-effective to serve every seat-occupant a cookie and a cup of tea than to have the poor cabin crew fumbling around with cash, credit cards and an unwieldy trolley full of 'menu items' for sale?? If I'd been that desperate for a packet of M&Ms I could have bought one at the airport before I boarded. read more

They don't even deserve 1 star! Just booked a flight with Jetstar. Supposed to be 6th December but randomly changed to 5th December. Within 5 minutes of this booking error I called Jetstar to see if they could help fix the error. They tried to charge me $150-$160 to change the date. I requested a manager review this error, the agreed to waive the fee but tried to charge me $62 for a flight difference that was only $27 online. I was happy to pay $27 but $62 would make that flight the most expensive in comparison to all other airlines which defeats the purpose of flying Jetstar. they said the online price is different and wouldn't accept that. Went to complaints team, no help or compassion from them either. I feel completely scammed and will never fly Jetstar again!!!!!! NOTE: since this post (and a few others), the customer service team on twitter sorted everything out without a drama. So, I think the overseas customer service team (which I think is also the complaints team), are the problem and bringing the service to a negative space. read more

Decided to fly with Jetstar on a recent trip from Sydney to Queenstown (Return). The air fares were really reasonable and because we booked months in advance, I was able to use my booking reference to pick the seats we wanted online. Happy to pay the extra fee, because managed to get row 1, and it was well worth it. Flight was good, staff were good and everything ran smoothly when it came to boarding and getting off the plane. Only issue was check in at Sydney International. very slow, only two working the desk and waited up to 45m-1hr to check in. Gave very little time to get through Customs and Duty Free. Overall, very good. Just a tad shy off a perfect review due to check in times. read more
