My partner and I recently went to a show on a Saturday night. I was really let down by this theater company. I've never seen such an uptight improv group, or been to an improv show that wanted to be so rigid and serious, and seemed to discouraged audience laughter or feedback. We were sitting in the front next to a group of younger 20-somethings who were enjoying themselves at what I thought was an appropriate level for community improv theater--much quieter than someone else in the back row. There was laughter and some side talking, but nothing loud or disrespectful. I was shocked by how the theater treated these young theatergoers. One of the girls felt so embarrassed and publicly shamed that I had to have a mini counseling session with her during intermission. While I may not know the whole story, we were right next to them, so I doubt I missed much. Even my partner and I, who are in our 40s, felt a bit unsure how to react to the show as audience members - we definitely went in expecting an improv show that encouraged audience feedback, but have the life experience to read the room and adjust accordingly. We wish the theater would have taken the opportunity to either set the tone and audience expectations in the beginning, or seen the opportunity to educate these young people on different theater experiences - rather than discourage them from supporting the arts. Instead of leaving the show excited and discussing the performance, my partner and I spent the whole hour afterward feeling disheartened that a theater would actively discourage young people from becoming future theater lovers. read more

I signed up for the Intro to Improv class at Seattle Center and it was a terrible experience. The class was completely oversold. So, with 20+ people, there was no way to form connections with other students. Even standing in a circle, you could not see other people's faces, which is an important aspect to many of the "games" that are played. There was an odd "fake woke" performative aspect to the class which was off putting and ended up having the opposite effect. It felt very exclusionary to different groups of people. The class also seemed to draw in an undesired element of obnoxious students. Very tech-bro-esque. Then, the instructor, while nice, was clearly very new & inexperienced. She would often fail to guide students who were misunderstanding the point of the games. And, they also forgot important instructions or rules to the various games. I have also taken improv classes at Unexpected Productions and CSZ Seattle. My experience in those improv classes was incredible. Great students with incredibly talented instructors. I can not recommend either of those options * highly enough* to anyone interested in learning improv in a safe & friendly environment. read more

I have been here twice for improve shows and seriously this place is amazing! The theater is good size but all seats can see the stage which is a must with improve! They have a great selection of local beers and inside the theater have a legit bar! Also they have popcorn! Prices are great for a show means I can see more shows without breaking the bank! I've seen two performances now and wow just wow! The first one was the jet city improv show and I couldn't stop laughing at some of the skits this group is one of the best improve groups out there! The next show I saw was an indian musical. So they had dancing and they based the skit off someone's comments so every night their show was different. Ours was about a quest to have a child. Did I mention they have popcorn and other snacks? AND a full bar?!? I go with the box of red wine when I go it's 6$ and I think it was the equivalent to 2 glasses of wine what a deal! read more

So here we go again, I'm in a class again with these people, and seriously the professionalism and comedic humor that they push into our faces is mind-boggling. This time, the class was facilitated by Chris Allen. A fine stand up gentleman, who is keen on taking our second level class to new heights. We practiced a few scenes each session, and focused on listening skills. Truly the secret for doing these classes, is listening and you will be the winner. I've attended a few different comedy shows here and every one has been a blast! The comics are hilarious and when the crowd is rolling it's even more fun. The bar leaves much to be desired however as the last couple of visits their signature drink was foul. But if you stick with typical well drinks you should be fine. I would highly recommend this for a date or a group activity. read more

I came here for the first time for their new years Eve event and I had a lot of fun. It was family friendly, the food was plentiful and delicious (enough for seconds and thirds) and the mini cheesecake dessert from the confectionery was delicious! The improv was very good and I thought the whole experience was a good alternative to bars and clubs. We even got free Champaign at the end. I had a blast at Jet City Improv! There's a small bar in the back with everything you need as well as a concession stand. The room itself is small and intimate which makes for a great, interactive show. The improv group was genuine and you could tell they were as as much fun as the audience was. I laughed so hard that I couldn't breathe at times and the best thing was that it was all family friendly. Highly recommended for a fun night out and I will definitely be back! read more

I have been a huge MST3K fan since the show originally aired. During its much-too-long hiatus, a friend of mine introduced me to Twisted Flicks, which is Jet City Improv's twist on the concept. Every month, they take a different cheesy old movie, strip out the soundtrack, and improvise a newer, funnier one. Over the years, I've seen a number of their shows, most recently The Abominable Snowman (starringPeter Cushing in his pre-Grand Moff Tarkin days). I love everything about the shows, starting with the movie, the improvised new dialogue and soundtrack, but also the small, somewhat rickety theater, the not-too-expensive snacks, and the bar right in the back of the theater. You can pick up a movie-themed cocktail before the show, which recently was a pretty tasty concoction that glowed atomic green. Tickets are reasonable and the overall vibe is just fun and friendly. I'm honestly shocked at how many people came on here angry about their bad experiences with jet city. I LOVE going to shows here. The people working there are super nice, the cast always rocks, and I've never been to a show without lots of enthusiasm from the crowd. Yes, sometimes the crowd is younger (I started going when I was pretty young too, so I guess I might be biased) but just because a crowd is younger doesn't make the show any less fun. Concessions are simple but tasty, the place is clean, and I always leave happy and after having laughed for a few hours straight. Jet city also accepts Teentix for all those Seattle youth trying to get immersed more in the arts scene in the area. read more

The Boy found out about "Clues", the improv play, a few weeks ago, so we skipped trivia last night and headed to the Historic University Theater instead. What a cool experience! First of all, it's only $10 per ticket. And they offer student rates, if that's too steep for you. Beers are only $4, and for every dollar you spend on concessions, they give you a penny that you use to vote on the outcome of the play. The theater itself is small, so you might have to split up from the people you came with, but there's really not a bad seat in the house. If you get there early enough, you can give input as to who you want the characters to be in the play--for example, last night some suggestions were "Bites People", "Nervous Nose-wiper" and "Chemist". Right before the cast comes out, they get more suggestions from the audience, like random objects, phrases, and setting suggestions. And then they come out and do the play, making it up as they go! I have a whole new respect for actors. read more

I have been attending Wing-it Production shows for over 10 years now. I first went to Jet City Improv in high school, back when they occupied a shoebox-esque space in Belltown. I am still a regular patron today. Why? Because Wing-it represents the best in improvisation and experimental theater. Wing-it differs from many other improv companies, in two fundamental ways: -1: They do not operate in a competitive mode. Unlike many well known improv groups (eg. Unexpected Productions, Whose Line is it Anyway), which involve theater sports where the actors play primarily to a set of judges, Jet City and Wing-it use competitive improv games sparingly. This allows them to bend the rules and play primarily towards the audience, thus making for a more entertaining show. -2: Wing-it seeks to achieve a "Higher Plane of Comedy" by encouraging the improvisers and the audience to throw out Jorge's big book of fart jokes. Jet City Improv operates a good-taste alarm that goes off at any lewd, crude or lascivious suggestion. Removing the easy, base, toilet humor from their shows not only ensures a family friendly experience, but also challenges the improvisers to avoid the easy joke in favor of the clever and surprising. That being said, Wing-it has added a few adults only specialty shows that do not shy away from more racy subject matter. These shows generally occupy the midnight slot in the line-up after the kiddies are in bed. The special shows put on by Wing-it, adult themed or not are, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest strengths of the company. Long-form shows like Clues, Reality World, Election Show 2004 and Wallflowers adapt traditional improv games and concepts to spoof various aspects of pop-culture and Americana. Wing-it has consistently explored new applications and formats for improv theater, usually with great success. Coupled with their philanthropic and educational outreach programs, I cannot recommend this group highly enough. read more

This review is for Funbucket only - the 12am Saturday night show. I've been to Funbucket twice and trust me, if you don't bring something fun to put in the bucket you will be kicking yourself. Or you might get kicked by someone else. This is a very interactive show. This show is rated M for Mature Audiences, but they don't allow you to bring perishable unbagged foods, parts from a body, anything that can slice, or movies directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Funbucket secret: I only think two of the players are funny and if one or both of them did not star in Funbucket, I would not go. I have heard from someone that they don't think any of the female players are funny. I thought that was sexist so I made him slap himself with his own hand. Cost is $8 a ticket read more

Why have I never been here before last night?!?! Jet City Improv is friggin amazing!! Tickets are only $10, they have a student discount (not sure how much dough it saves you), once you enter there's a concession bar and you can get sodas, beers (sadly nothing I liked), wine in a juice-looking-carton, candy bars, and popcorn. They do have a $3 limit, fyi... but their popcorn is kinda sorta tasty so just go for it. Sadly I found out AFTER walking that inside the theatre part is a bar that makes cocktails, go figure. Next time I go I'll hit that up instead of my sad non-alcoholic root beer. The 'cast' is hilarious! The lady who does the em-ceeing and sound effects is ridiculously good, and they are super quick and witty. One of my friends I went with actually won 2nd place for best suggestion and got a Top Ramen and a free pass to a future show, hells yeah! They had Puppet Theatre afterwards and if you saved your Improv ticket you get $2 off the Puppet (or next) show, however it was already a tad late for us. There were minors/kids in the audience (didn't realize it was an All Ages thing), but that's cool. So you could bring your kids to the show! I cannot wait to go back :) read more

Sick of 'dinner & a movie'? Too rainy for a walk in the park? Well, have no fear... I have an awesome suggestion for your next 'date' night. Hell, this could even be your next night out with the guys or girls or one of those events you use to show off Seattle to out-of-town visitors. Twisted Flicks. Twisted Flicks happens on the LAST weekend of every month (Thursday, Friday, & Saturday). So they take an old black & white "B" movie, like Teenage Werewolf, and show it on a full-sized movie screen. Then they dub out the entire movie (kinda like Mystery Science Theater but WAY better). Its HILARIOUS & BRILLIANT. As you walk in, you can grab a refreshing alcoholic beverage (at a reasonable price) and maybe even make a suggestion for one of the characters of the movie (if you get there semi-early). One last suggestion I have for you, buy your ticket in ADVANCE! They sell out and you definitely don't wanna be one of the poor schmucks waiting out there in the cold, all of the sudden forced to come up with plan B for the night. I'm rating just the Jet City Improv performance, and not any classes or that type of thing. For $15, the improv shows at Jet City are a great and inexpensive activity. If you think about it, tickets to a movie are around $15 now, so it's really amazing that you can see a live show for that amount. I could tell that the shows vary highly based on who is in the audience. I do wish maybe we had some more creative audience members when I was there (myself included, I've found I'm not good with shouting out random objects on demand). I think I would have an even better time if I went with a large group of friends and we had a few drinks beforehand. Definitely a great activity/date night. read more

Awesome. Just plain awesome. One theatre, and in one weekend they do about 6 shows which are mostly family friendly (with the exception of the midnight show). Its interactive, its hilarious, and most of all: its a non-profit that works hard with staff and many volunteers. And flash your UPASS and you get 1 or 2 dollars off (I can't remember...), its cheaper than a movie, and well worth the price... especially if you're on a date! read more

Jet City, I'll come and fly your friendly skies again! I was told about JCI months ago by a co-worker who told me I should go, and assured me I'd have a great time. I cataloged her advice and then, about a year later (this past weekend), I would take it. My girlfriend and I were trying to figure out what to do for the evening. Karaoke? No, I don't feel like singing. Movie? No, we can't decide on anything. Comedy? Ok, maybe, what's out there. We searched the comedy Seattle had to offer and then I remembered, improv! The JCI troupe definitely didn't disappoint, with their antics and shenanigans. As Rachel states, JCI is short form improv, which means it's close to what you'd see on 'whose line is it, anyway.' The players are talented, they do a great job at engaging the audience (although I could've done without them throwing candy to audience members-what are we, 6?), and they are funny! So I'll be back-it's something that's different and entertaining. And it costs the same as a movie, $10-so that's a plus, too, in these recessionary dayze!! read more

BUT as a completely objective third party this place is awesome! The theater is really cool and plus they serve beer there. But I guess I just don't get improv. It feels like people are laughing only because it is improvised. If the show was planned and written beforehand, it would be really bad comedy. It feels as if a group of people are in their basement killing time on a Sunday. Comedy headz will tell you that the debate about what constitutes "good" comedy is more intractable, and less likely to have a permanent solution, than anything this side of the Levant. If you've been raised on Chicago comedy (and you probably were if you're from east of the Rockies), or its slightly edgier cousin in New York, then you've probably (like me) found it difficult to see comedy you like in Seattle. Sketch in Seattle comes from an artier place than its Eastern and Midwestern kin; that's not to say it's bad, just that it generally lacks a certain ironic angst - Seattle's isolation has forced it into its own developmental path. Likewise with improv. Both of the big Seattle houses -- Wing-It and Jet City -- are pretty homegrown. But an improv fest that started a few years ago has brought some much needed Eastern influences into the local scene. Jet City, as the lead sponsor of the fest, has incorporated those influences more whole-heartedly, and as a result is producing shows that are now garnering critical acclaim at CIF, Del Close, and the other "big" industry showcases. Current Jet City-related (the parent company is Wing-It, which -- technically -- is the producer of Jet City and the other shows I'll mention) shows include "Cupcake", an X-rated midnight-thirty exposition of theatrical exhibitionism, the long running Twisted Flicks (think MST3K live and in stereo), and of course their bedrock shortform Jet City show. The great thing about Jet City is that, under the tutelage of long-time ringleaders Mike and Andrew (a UW PATP grad), they've developed a unique style and approach to comedy that's casual, yet edgy. It's ironic and "meta", but without the wink -- that is to say it's "so Seattle." Their short form shows are solid without getting caught up in convention, and their long-form shows aspire to greatness. If you're in the mood for improv, check these guys out. If you're going to a "later" show (10p or later), get there early. Seats tend to fill up with hordes of UW undergrads who're on their way out to the night's parties. read more

This is based on 2 shows that I've attended. The first one was a murder mystery show by Jet City Improv. Absolutely high-larious. It was crowded and everyone was really into it. The second show was "Irish Wake" in March 2007. Very few people, the theatre was freezing and it wasn't really funny. We left b/f it was over shrinking the audience by about 25%. They claimed to have an open bar in the back of the theatre (not the usual one up in the lobby). Yeah, the 'open bar' only had vodka and beer. And it was cash only. Not really Irish-worthy, if you ask this lad. read more

A couple friends and I went to the Jet City Improv show one Saturday night because of raving reviews on yelp. The show boasted its family friendliness which made me impressed but also skeptical. All the comedy shows I'd been to had some element of deep inappropriateness - part of the reason why it's so funny. TO MY SURPRISE, the entire show was very family friendly, no sexual or racist jokes. It was so worth the $10 I paid for it. Oh, and don't forget to look around the website for a coupon to the show - you can get up to $2 off a general admission ticket! I laughed the entire night and was impressed at how well read the actors were in pop culture. All night, they were working with suggestions like Minnie Mouse, Tatooine, "I'm Sexy and I Know It", and Galdalf the Grey. LOL. Though it's a little far from downtown Seattle and especially from Kent, the trip to Northern Seattle was worth it! That, plus there's lots of yummy things to eat around there! read more

When the performers and, to a lesser extinct, the audience, are in sync, the result can be the best comedy available in the U-District. The location is a cozy well-used theater in a place slightly off the beaten path. NB: As this is improv, there is the chance that you'll stumble upon a below-average show. Why Jet City Improv deserves tons of credit: 1. They are inexpensive. 2. All-age appropriate. A large group of high schoolers took up most of the crowd during the performance I sat in on. I immediately misjudged, thinking that we were about to watch some Teletubbies skit....but was completely proven wrong. This group packed a punch full of laughter with clean humor! I didn't know that was possible! 3. They serve drinks. 4. They serve EXTREMELY CHEAP popcorn. 5. The performers are talented and collaborate very well together, and make the show interactive to keep the audience engaged. The theatre seats about a couple hundred, if I had to take a guess. It wouldn't hurt to be renovated, but once the show starts nothing matters except the skits and cleverness that the performers infuse the room with! read more

I looove this place. You can come here with a group of friends, with a date, or even with a bachelor party. Prior to coming here, I wouldn't have expected for improv to be something I'd enjoy and find hilarious, but the show certainly proved me wrong. Tickets are inexpensive... they're about as much as you'd pay at a movie theater (if I'm not mistaken, they're actually cheaper). I would also think that a venue on University Way would be a dreaded place to park, but to my pleasant surprise, parking took less than 5 minutes to find. read more

Solid choice for a funny evening of live improv theatre. On the Ave and 55th (the giant yellow building). They offer a variety of shows, so there's always something new to see. Jet City Improv is the traditional improv games. They have a rotating selection of themed improv shows that are great fun (from Irish Wakes, to High School Musicals, to Zombies). The Election Show is a particular joy, and will be returning for this year's election season. They also show the Twisted Flicks where a B-movie is dubbed live for the audience. And then they sometimes have late night shows that get a bit raunchy. There's a large rotating cast, including some veterans of improv and fresh new talent. It keeps things rolling along well. The theatre space is nice. There's a bar with reasonably priced drinks, too. The women's restroom is an overwhelming shade of fuschia, but it's not like one attends theatre for the restroom experience. Street parking at this end of the Ave is much easier to find, so that helps. PRO TIP: attend the opening night of the themed shows...because these are "gala" nights and there is free champagne & cake afterwards, as well as a Q&A with cast and crew. And ticket prices are the same as regular nights. Prices aren't unreasonable, and they offer discounts to students. You can get tickets online ahead of time, or just buy at the box office. They used to offer $1 discount if you brought a non-perishable food donation. Not sure if they still do this, but I think they do. If you're looking for something to do that's fun and different than just "see a movie" or "hang out at a bar" this is a nice option. They also do a good job of keeping their main shows family-friendly, too. read more

Tip: They ask for a lot of audience suggestions (and reward good/usable responses with candy!), SO BE READY (come PREPARED) to yell out things like places for bad dates, funny animals, funny inanimate objects, vacation activities, first-world problems, etc. The loudest responses usually get picked, so have a good one and yell it louder than the random douche that always yells out, "Your mom!"... the actors and the rest of us audience will thank you. read more

Jet City Improv is short-form (basically: games with silly rules and one-shot scenes), which is almost never transcendently amazing, but this was really, really solid short-form. The Jet City actors really know how to have a cohesive show, effortlessly incorporating music and sound effects. It's clean enough that you could bring kids, but it doesn't pander to them. Also, there's a bar! We had a really good time, and we'd definitely go back (particularly to see one of their special shows). read more
