First Dance
Sanaz S.

When my fiancé and I first met Michelle to start preparing for our wedding dance we were so lost and did not know what we would be capable of. Michelle is such an intelligent teacher who took the time and effort to thoroughly know who we are, what we are good at, what we need help in, and how we learn best. She was so patient with our slow pace in selecting musics and drilling down to a certain style. She is very creative in infusing various techniques and describing all the nuances of the movements. The beautiful experience of our first dance forever reminds us of her loving and caring personality. We are now so passionate about dancing and would like to join her group class.

We loved working with Michelle on our first dance! My husband and I are not dancers but wanted do more than the middle school sway for our first dance at our wedding. About 5 weeks before the wedding, we decided to book 3 lessons with Michelle and we couldn't have been happier! At our first lesson, she choreographed a routine appropriate for our skill level (beginner!) and added movement and refined our technique at subsequent lessons. With us practicing our routine a couple times between sessions, we felt we were 100% ready on our wedding day! Our guests were thrilled with the routine. If you are on the fence about taking a lesson, please book a session with Michelle! She is affordable, experienced, and even one lesson with her will make a huge difference in your level of confidence on the dance floor.

One of the lifts Michelle taught us!

They teach a little 1 hour lesson from 8:30 to 9:30 and then open up the dance floor until 2 AM. You can learn some basic steps to get your started but don't expect to know Salsa after one mini lesson. :) As a follow, it was enough to just have a good time that night. The later you come, the more veteran and experienced dancers you'll meet. Many beginners come dance for the first hour or so and then leave. On Saturdays, the Bachata room is also open down the hall. A much smaller room but that's enough. The entrance fee of $20 gets you into both rooms. (Intro lesson is $5 extra). It's great being able to go back & forth between the rooms. There is a bar that you can buy drinks. You are allowed to bring your own water bottles but you have to leave it up at the front entrance because they don't allow you to bring your own bottles in due to the bar. Sometimes they even have performances from dance groups on Saturday nights. They also have practice sessions on weeknights that you can join and check out. With what little dance experience I've had over the last 2 months, Century definitely feels like "the place to be" if you want to dance the night away. Because of that though, Saturday Socials feels more like a show/a place to show off rather than a place to practice so just be prepared for that kind of atmosphere. Parking can be difficult since it's Cap Hill. Most people park at the parking garage down the street. **I'm not going to fault Century for this but this is something for women to take note of - not all men here are as respectful as you'd want them to be. Watch out for their hands and unwanted advances. Sometimes you really have to set your boundaries clearly because some people will def. take advantage of a friendly dancer.**

Neither of us are dancers, and we were nervous about being in the spotlight, but our first dance turned out to be one of the most special moments of the night. We weren't sure how to begin, so we went to Groupon to begin our search. After finding Abayas' Ballroom, we walked into the studio and met with the fabulous Catherine. We were nervous but she welcomed us with bright and gentle energy. My husband is a guy who never took dance classes but enjoyed moving to the beat. I am a gal who has a minimal dance background and a habit of wanting to lead. Sharing this with Catherine didn't phase her. She adapted her instruction to our experience and learning styles and I could tell she wanted us to believe in ourselves. The most beautiful thing about Catherine and FJ is they don't have cookie-cutter choreography for any of their couples. They dig deep, listen to your story, learn your personality and help you tell your story through dance. FJ wasn't our instructor, but he was so friendly and encouraging, and we got to witness a few times how he teaches his students as well. You will be in equally adept hands with either Catherine or FJ. We requested more sessions because we felt a strong connection with Catherine. She is kind and honest, determined and mindful. She celebrates growth and inspires confidence. I learned to give up the reins and my husband learned to take the lead and immerse himself in the dance. We fell even deeper in love with one another through this intimate shared experience. We were very confident and excited to share our performance with our loved ones. Everyone was so surprised and it was a beautiful addition to our special day. We can't thank Catherine enough for all she has done for us.

There is a man who lives on the first floor, right outside the doors, who is a senior with disabilities. I am on the third floor, and every time they wake me up. There is a quite simple solution: exit the front door after 10 pm. I have multiple videos of this happening.

Although the instructor was a substitute, I felt the quality of the lesson was not diminished at all. Pace of the lesson is beginner friendly, and even though it took me the first half of the hour to adjust and remember the vibe of dancing, I was still able to pick up the fundamentals and feel confident in myself dancing a few 8 counts at the end without hesitation. I had a great time, even with the fact that the class was really small (about 6 people), as it normally feels a bit intimidating for me to dance in small groups, at least for now. The only issue for me is the commute as I don't have a car to commute from downtown Seattle, but whenever my friend with a car wants to do more dance lessons, this will certainly be the first place I will think of! Besides, this is one of my coworkers go-to dance studio in the past before he moved closer to the city, and he has mentioned that before covid, some lessons are so popular you have to pay in advance to secure a spot!
