We stopped here for dinner when we were in the area based on a friend's recommendation. First impression from the outside (see picture) and confirmed once inside was of a 70s-era steakhouse (dark, no windows & dark decor). That is not a knock / negative comment, just an observation. Once inside, it was quite crowded but we were quickly welcomed by Joe the bartender who asked our names and then repeated them several times before we left. I started off by ordering a Brandy Alexander ice cream drink (see picture) and loved it. We enjoyed the table bread, which included plenty of available butter (see picture). My wife overheard some other patrons talking about how good the onion rings were. Since the large is only $1 more than the small we ordered a large (see picture) and both thought they were good. The best part of the meal was the salad with the house creamy garlic dressing (see picture) - both the dressing and the croutons were delicious. For our main course we went with the London Broil (see picture) - which unfortunately was the weakest part of the meal. The slice laying on top was medium rare as ordered (see picture), but the other slices bordered on medium-well to well done. As you might expect, those other pieces were dry, tough and lacking flavor. When the owner stopped by our table (before we got our main course), he did mention that there was a substitute chef that night - so this dish might be better on another night. STILL MY FAVORITE SHRIMP IN DSM! And probably my favorite steak place, there are several good ones but Jesses is a classic. Cajun shrimp appetizer: what in the magic potion do they put in this sauce? I just want to pour it over everything! Ribeye: perfectly medium rare, side of au jus, large baked potato (though I didn't eat it) came with. Love their house dressing so much. Grateful they were so kind about letting us bring in our service dog in-training. He did great, wasn't distracted by the delicious smells either. I, on the other hand, was completely distracted by all of the food smells

Juicy medium rare with a perfect char. This ribeye was as good as it gets.

Perfect medium rare ribeye. They must have a hot grill because the outside was crispy charred and oh man it was so perfect. I don't know how you beat this place if you want a steak. We started with onion rings which were very good. And then the salad which was excellent. House creamy parm dressing and buttery croutons. Even with a bottle of wine, our anniversary dinner was still affordable compared to anything else in the city. I highly highly recommend this place. Top notch service to boot. And open kitchen where you can see the master at work. This is a Des Moines treasure.

This place never disappoints. The staff makes you feel at home. I have been coming here for many many years. They always remember me. I have never had a meal I didn't like. Their house salad dressing and the homemade croutons are my favorite.

    Large onion ring. DELICIOUS!!!

We found this place while driving down Ingersoll. The place looked like a dive from the outside. Once we got inside the place was clean and they had shields up for covid on the booths. The joint was small but they did a nice job of table arrangements. The staff was friendly and prompt. We had the rib, French dip, and Ember Burger and they were all amazing. We had onions rings for an app. They were old school deliciousness!!! Definitely recommending this joint and will return if I'm in the area.

The moment we crossed the threshold, we were utterly struck by the breathtaking grandeur of the space. The décor is an absolute triumph monumental, lavish, and deeply impressive. It possesses that rare, magnetic energy that makes it the quintessential destination for a glamorous, exciting date night out. We were seated elegantly, and our waitress provided a masterclass in bespoke service. She was wonderfully attentive, walking us through the evening's offerings with a grace that made us feel instantly warm and welcomed. For my main, I simply couldn't resist the Chicken Biscuits. The dish arrived in a crisp fifteen minutes, showcasing a beautifully prepared, exceptionally fresh chicken breast alongside the most delicate biscuits. Now, it traditionally comes paired with a signature sauce, but my palate simply cannot tolerate anything spicy. When I requested a modification, our lovely waitress handled it with absolute poise and perfection. Between the stunning, palatial surroundings, the flawless hospitality, and the exquisite cuisine, it was an absolutely thrilling evening. Proudfoot & Bird is a magnificent jewel in Des Moines, and I shall most certainly be returning to grace their dining room again very soon!

The Ultimate Stop for Bikes, Beer & Bites…read more After a day of biking, we made it back to El Bait Shop with some friends. This place is a solid choice, whether you're in the mood for the world's biggest selection of tap beers or some fantastic gastropub and comfort food from the lounge next door. We love it here because we can park our bikes in the provided area off the patio and still keep an eye on them. The outdoor service area is semi-shaded and the service is just as good as you'd get inside. As a beer lover, I can tell you the selection is ridiculous and expansive. If you want it, they probably have it, and from four or five different breweries at that! The menu is also loaded, with choices from both El Bait Shop and the High Life Lounge. Today, our food order was as impressive as the beer list. While I can't recall all the beers we had, the food included a Prime Rib Sandwich with tots ($14.99), the Pizza Burger also with tots ($11.99), the Philly Style Pot Roast Sandwich with a side of potato salad, and a massive bowl of Macaroni and Cheese ($11.99). We were starving after our ride, but that didn't change the fact that the food was all delicious, well-prepared, and served by our very attentive waiter, Kyle???, May. No one had any complaints, and the beer was cold and on time! Overall, we love the eclectic vibe of this place. Its downtown location gives you some great views, and more importantly, you're within walking distance of almost everything downtown Des Moines has to offer. This is a go-to spot for me, and I love taking first-time visitors here because it's so unique and the quality of both the service and the food is always on point. Oh, and did I mention the beer selection is completely insane? If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out, and you don't even know it. PRO TIP: Come here, and before you leave, slip over to the High Life Lounge for a throwback moment. Next time, start there and slip over here for a beer!

Located in a grand office building, walking through the restaurant doors, we were met with a dark, warm and inviting room. Dark varnished wood, touches of green accents and a giant brass bull, create the perfect backdrop for a fabulous meal. We had 2 servers that could not have been more helpful. They were so sweet and worked in unison to care for our every need. Every aspect of our meal was perfect. The warm sourdough bread was soft and crunchy. The special lobster bites were crunchy. The steaks cooked perfectly. The sides were better than usual. But our desserts finished with perfection. The cream poured by the server, the extra rich ice cream and my soufflé were all masterpieces.

Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We ordered the Delmonico steak with bone marrow butter, sautéed spinach, mac and cheese, beef carpaccio, house bread, and two glasses of Malbec. The food was delicious, with a few notes. The Delmonico is a hefty, 24-oz bone-in steak. We ordered it medium. It came out quickly, yet overcooked. Upon inspection and taste, we expressed concern with our waitress who removed and replaced it with a perfectly cooked medium. After this substitution, absolutely no complaints. The manager complimented us with a beef carpaccio, which was kind of him. It was covered with a bed of arugula, which was a bit more than necessary for the quantity of meat. Stellar mac and cheese, good balance of pasta and sauce, with texture from breadcrumbs. Great eating experience. The spinach was well seasoned, with very strong garlic flavors. A bit of extra sauté time would do a lot for a milder, more palatable flavor. Heavy wine pours to celebrate or Valentine's day dinner. Thank you 801 Chophouse!

I moved to the Des Moines metro in 1992 and have been coming to Iowa Beef Steakhouse for years…read more Iowa Beef Steakhouse opened in 1982. It changed ownership in early 2015 when two previous employees purchased the steakhouse from the original owner. For me it's the quintessential steakhouse in the metro... That's not to knock any of our other long standing locals like 801, AJ's, Chicago Speakeasy, Johnny's, John & Nick's, The Big Steer, Rube's, Irina's, Jesse's, Trostel's, etc. Probably others I've forgotten to mention along with many other recent additions... We live in Iowa. We have some of the best beef in the nation! It's hard to throw a rock without hitting a restaurant that serves up a good cut of beef. Outside of the ownership and some slight changes to the menu (weights, additional items, prices) not much else has changed since I started coming here. Same signage, same building exterior, same dark hardwood walls and furniture, even the same carpet I think... It's an old school vibe. One of my friends had a recent trip to Mayo. When they were up there they called me and told me about a horror show of a visit they had with a chain steakhouse up there in Rochester. I listened and I probably smirked a little on the other side of the phone... I told them when they got back in town, had recovered from their procedure, I'd take them out for a good steak. To me Iowa Beef Steakhouse is the place to go. We were greeted right away at the host station up front as we walked in. A later dinner on a Friday evening... We were shown to a low topped table towards the rear half of the restaurant. Seating is low top tables and chairs for the most part along with a standard bar area and seating. After a short wait Jess came by and introduced herself and took our drink order (Pepsi products, wine, beer, and anything else you may want from the bar). The drinks hit the table after a couple of minutes and it was on to our food order. 1x fountain drink 1x unsweetened ice tea 1x large sauteed mushroom skillet 1x 16 oz ribeye (medium), with fries, and salad bar 1x 20 oz sirloin (medium rare) with fries, and salad bar They offer seven cuts of steak, pork chops, chicken, ribs and more. Served with a baked potato and salad bar. The salad bar is one of the better ones! Boasting standard lettuce and fixings along with multiple dressings. On to potato, pasta, coleslaw, cucumber and onion, broccoli, bean, pea salad, etc. Pudding and fluff. No more pickled herring though... Guess the demand for that one is no more. I used to grab a piece or two now and then. I kind of missed seeing on there, but mostly from a nostalgia sense. Lol They started offering burgers on their lunch menu after the ownership change in 2015! Don't sleep on these! One of the best burgers you'll find in the city. We were able to sub the baked potato choice for fries, but Jess warned us they have a pretty small fryer in the kitchen and when it's busy at dinner time it's at their discretion whether they can do this or not and it may not always be an option. I have an issue with some textures. Lumpy mashed poatoes being one of them...so it's really hard for me to enjoy a baked potato. No matter how good it is. Lol I'm just really glad they have a fryer again... They went a few years without one at all. Jess was a rockstar! Attentive. Quick on refills. Welcoming and she had a very enjoyable personality. The steaks were cooked perfectly to temp. In all my years of eating here I've never sent anything back to the kitchen. And even back in the day when they offered to let you cook your own I always paid the extra $ to let them take care of it for me... The mushrooms... Little morsels from the gods themselves! The fries and Texas toast. So good. Rochester tragedy not forgotten... But Iowa Beef Steakhouse restored their faith that meat can be cooked properly the first time and there is still exceptional service out there. Frankly..., I hope this place never changes! Subtle is fine... There's just something so comforting about walking into a place you have been coming to for over 30+ years and it's still like you remember it. Kind of like walking back into your parents' house when you come home for a visit, no matter how old you are, and your childhood bedroom is still pretty much the same. Another great visit to Iowa Beef Steakhouse... I know I'll be back...! https://iowabeefsteakhouse.com/

There were two other tables in the whole restaurant so needless to say it was quiet. Our server was sweet but obviously not trained on efficient and fast service but was probably encouraged to run like a bunny when things go sideways. We ordered two glasses of wine and an old fashioned. Figured I just got off of a plane so why not get the evening going with some bourbon and have a Plan B with the glass of wine when I am ready. Two glasses of wine were delivered but no old fashioned. Who does this? Anyhow, old fashioned came out next. We ordered a cup of soup and a small salad to start with and then ordered a burger, medium, with fries and the pasta bolognese. The soup and salad came out but there was a long stretch of time before entrees came out. When they finally arrived the burger was very rare inside so my wife let the server know and she apologized and scurried off. I tried to wait but it was getting cold so I slowly nibbled. After 20 minutes, I flagged down our server and asked if the burger was coming out and she said "oh, do you want another one"? It was now 9pm and they were closing but we were not leaving until we enjoyed a medium burger. When the new burger came out, she said the "owner made it himself. We cut it in half to check the temperature it was still pink. How can an owner of a restaurant not know how to make a medium-medium well burger? And why didn't he walk out and deliver it himself and apologize? Not a word! My dish was finished and plate was gone while my wife finally had her burger. We had planned to eat together that was not going to happen tonite. She ate half and we took the rest of it to go. With wine, an old fashioned and the worst dinner experience, we spent $174 with tip. Huge mistake. Here is my tip: train your servers on how to take care of customers. To the cooks, invest in a thermometer if you can't tell when a burger is medium. To the owner, step out and make sure your customers are happy and enjoying your food.
