a plate of meat and rice

Longstanding filipino take out place at the Kennedy and Lawrence intersection. Open real early, 0800. Good food, lots of options as usual. With the staple filipino foods such as the adobo's, the afritada, the breakfast dishes like Beef Tapa, Longganisa, Tapa, etc. Pretty taste food they have here. Im a fan of their breakfast because they have really really good garlic fried rice. Its not too mushy or too dry, no burnt garlic either. It just tasty. Different prices for the combos, regular, special, etc. All depending on what side dish you take with your rice, which they dont tell you until you are being charged 9.99 for a combo when you expected to have it for 7.99. Other than that, not a bad place.. Good food, not really a place for romantic dates or anything like that. If you wanna eat your filipino good and catch up on some filipino tv soap operas or game shows, then this is one of the places for you. Just a reminder, I dont think they offer a boodle fight kind of meal.

Lakay Kusina is a small Filipino restaurant . I was searching for a Filipino restaurant in the GTA…read moreone day, and lots of YouTube videos recommended this restaurant. The current owner Ariel took over the restaurant from his uncle just before the pandemic. It's already a good sign to know a restaurant survived that -- it must have its unique advantages. My first impression of this restaurant was that it made me feel very relaxed, as if I was truly in the Philippines, or on a tropical small island. Its decoration and the way it displays the food are casual and even a bit shabby, but still make me feel very comfortable, just like being at home. The restaurant plays 80's, 90's music. I heard it has karaoke from time to time, I do want to participate in that ! It has all kinds of authentic Filipino food, but our goal is only the Kamayan - Boodle Fight. I looked it up with AI, Kamayan means "use hands to eat", Boodle is just a lot of food, Fight is because you need to fight for your food. This feast is very appealing. All the ingredients will be spread on the table which is covered by banana leaves. The ingredients are colorful, the main proteins are seafood, like squids and fish . With a lot of boiled vegetables on the side. The rice is garlic rice and full of flavor. The restaurant will provide you with gloves to let you eat them with your hands. You can eat them directly or with their special sauce. The food is delicious, but what really stands out is the memorable combination of visuals and flavors. If you've never tried a boodle fight before, I highly recommend giving it a try .

The menu is simple but offers enough variety that you'll definitely want to come back and try more. The service was excellent as well--staff were friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better. I tried the Ilocos Empanada and was pleasantly surprised--it was made fresh to order and packed with flavor. While waiting, you can enjoy a comforting cup of Beef Nilaga soup and sip on refreshing calamansi juice, which is such a nice touch. Overall, a really positive experience. I'd definitely come back, especially to try the Boodle Fight!

It is better this way so that each individual ingredient can be shown clearly. On top of a bed of crushed ice and carnation milk, there are 9 different ingredients plus a scoop of taro ice cream and a cherry on top. It took 10-15 mins to make it. The customer service was good. The Halo Halo was good, but I thought it had too much ice. There is a stage right in front of the food stall. When we were they, there was a children's magic show. There is indoor seating, but it is hard to find a table on the weekends since people linger around longer, especially if they are watching a show. There is free WiFi from the mall. We ordered the lumpiang shanghai, lumpiang sariwa, pork belly sliders, & pork belly adobo with garlic fried rice. For dessert we had the casava cake. We enjoyed all of the food. My personal favourite was the lumpiang sariwa. As for the adobo it was nice to try it as pork belly. Usually the protein with adobo is chicken & not pork. I liked that the food wasn't overly seasoned. Everything was cooked in authentic Filipino cuisine style. We ordered some takeout to share with the family. We ordered the Kare Kare oxtail, Ensaladang Talong, & Lumping Shanghai. The portions for takeout seem a lot smaller than dining in so I was disappointed with that. Service We had a couple of different ladies serving us the food. Both were young ladies & they were both very nice. They also checked on us to see if we were enjoying the food. I was surprised that the restaurant wasn't busy on a Friday at 12pm. I hope they get busier in the evenings! Ambiance The decor is a bit kitschy. It's like they tried to cram everything filipino into the restaurant. LOL. It is colourful though, & interesting. There is a small market at the front of the restaurant where they sell various things. Unfortunately they didn't have my fave candies: polvoron & pastillas. One of the waitstaff said they rotate those. I found it very cold in the restaurant. I might have been sitting near a vent or maybe it was where were sitting, near the front of the restaurant. After a while I put my coat on. But the other people in the restaurant didn't seem cold so maybe it was just me. Washrooms are 5 separate small washrooms equipped with a sink, toilet & hand dryer. The whole restaurant is cute. I would come back to try more of their dishes. When we were leaving there was more people in the restaurant so that was nice to see. Almost forgot to mention they have karaoke in the evenings! LOL

Also this was take out so went to pick it up. First thing they suggested was the Caldereta Royale. This was a poutine but with stewed beef, carrots and peas and gravy. Quite tasty. Next we got a fried adobo chicken on rice also pretty good. Chicken was crispy and I was smelling it all the way home and couldn't wait to dive in when I got home. Now for the main, we ordered the Kamayan box that we saw on instagram. 5 different proteins, bed of seasoned rice, nice shrimps and fried eggs. Everything worked really well together. My parents were over and they ate with us, never trying Filipino food before. They loved it. The flavours and the sauce that came with it... Just delicious, and a must try. Food was more than enough for all of us, and I have left overs for lunch tomorrow. The staff here are super nice people. Patient with me as I couldn't decide what to order and through our great ideas. Also gave me something for free to try which was delicious as well. Would definitely be going back, amazing experience.

So far, I've had their sisig, kare-kare, beef steak, binagoongan, and lumpiang prito, and every dish has been consistently flavorful. I'd also recommend their dessert - maja blanca (only $8) and chicharon (I would say is better than Banahaw), which were both delightful surprises. Pricing is fair, especially considering the quality. The packaging is thoughtful too, ensuring the food stays fresh. While the service can be a bit slow at times, the food is definitely worth the wait. This place has quickly become my go-to for Filipino cuisine, and I'm looking forward to trying more of their menu. It's funny that I first visited the store on Morningside a few months ago and never got any. Same with my most recent visit to this store. I found a Too Good to Go mystery package from this store and got one. It's truly a mystery to me, as Filipino food is still a journey that I've been enjoying. I went to pick up my food after shopping at Giant Tiger across the street on a Wednesday night. I had no problem finding a spot in this small plaza and backed into it. I then walked inside. There was an older couple who kept on wandering around the place. I wasn't sure what was going on. It was dizzying looking at them. I eventually gave up being polite waiting for them and approached the counter. I got a nice woman who helped me. She looked at my order and went ahead to put it together. She packaged everything extremely well. Every container of food had plastic wrap on it. I was impressed. I saw chicharron on the counter. It looked good. I'll need to come back to get more. I loved seeing everything in this store, from buns and sweets, to a shaved ice machine. She handed me my bag of goodies. I thanked her and carried them to my car. I then drove home. I got to unpack my goodies: - Smokey pork blood dish (diniguan) - Spicy pork with green beans - Steamed white rice Thanks to Arlene B. for letting me know what the first dish was called. It means a lot when folks help me. When I'm at an Asian supermarket, the sight of pork blood makes me cringe. I've had diniguan twice. The sauce is so flavourful and yummy that it doesn't gross me out. My first stint had pork and offal, with the latter not being my thing. This version was strictly pork. I loved it. It was delicious, especially with the rice. I also loved the spicy pork with green beans. I have a weakness for green beans, so anything paired with them is a hit. So good!
