I have been going to their office for about the last 10 years For regular cleanings and basic maintenance then all of a sudden I needed $25,000 worth of work to be done in my mouth. The interesting thing is that I took this bid for the work to three other dentists. None of them understood why he wanted to do so much work in my mouth nor why I was being charged so much money. I'm glad that I went and got the other opinions and I'm happy to have a new dentist. the one thing that really stood out was that they wanted to do $25,000 worth of work in my mouth without fixing the underlying periodontal issues so whatever work they would've done would've just resurfaced In a few years. My story is not unique and if you look at the reviews, he has eight 5-star ratings two 4-star ratings, two 2-star ratings and THIRTY EIGHT 1-star ratings. Worst dentist I have ever had. My friend went there in an emergency. Not only was she talked into paying for future work in order to get a reduced fee, but the work was done incorrectly and an extra appointment was required, for which she was charged. Why she went back there I wouldn't know, because during the first visit, the "assistant" cut her tongue during the procedure. My friend now has a swollen tongue with a small chunk missing, in constant pain from both the tooth and tongue, has to take medication to sleep and can barely eat. She is not facile with the internet so I looked up this dentist. I found high ratings on "Dr" HalBleib's website but here on Yelp, I see this history. Can this dentist still be getting away with this after all these years? The way my friend was treated was so shocking that I had to post, as I am fearful of dentists and it is a nightmare that a dentist can be getting away with this. read more

I have been to this dentist four or five times now. The office is very clean and the staff is nice. The doctor himself is nice and the technology in the office is impressive. I went every six months for a few years and there were always no problems, no problems, no problems. Now all of a sudden I need six fillings and a crown at the tune of $4000. I just don't think so...wouldn't we have seen these things coming? Its not like I spent the last six months eating candy. I went ahead with one filling and my tooth has not felt the same since. That was a month ago. I won't be going back and I'm skeptical as to this dentist's honesty and ability. Update 10/13/10: I have seen another dentist. Not only did my new dentist not find 4 of the 7 problems Dr. Halbleib found, but it was also uncovered by looking at Dr. Halbleib's treatment plan that he was basically billing an extra and irrelevant $100 charge per tooth. Oh and, perhaps the best...while I was told by Dr. Halbleib's office that my insurance "wouldn't cover anything" it turns out they never billed the insurance, perhaps because of the phantom/fraudulent $100 charge per tooth...? My husband had to have his lower dentures replaced just a few months after having the set completed, and the office told us they would call us if there would be any further charge (from the enormous amount we had already pre-paid). We never received any call, so we thought the replacement would be included in the pre-paid price. Appointments to make molds and such progressed. (Don't they keep the molds from just a few months ago?!) After several months of appointments dragging on in this process such that, now, it's been over a year since we started the whole denture process, we asked about the cost. Their response was, "Didn't someone call you?" No, no one had called. And they charged us an additional $7,000. What kind of business practice is this?! Despite the bad reviews, we tried this office because it was the only dentist in town that works with our insurance. I thought it would be worth the effort to do a trial run before dealing with changing insurance, again. Should have just changed insurance. The first issue I had with them was that their office sets up a separate appointment for a consultation after your initial check. So if you have dental work that needs to be done, it will take 3 appointments before it is worked on; 1. check up, 2. consultation, and then finally 3. the procedure appointment. The worst part is the billing. My daughter needed a few fillings and we were told at the consultation that they were minor and the total cost would be $450. The bill came in at over $1,200. When I spoke with our insurance they told me that the dentist had added billing codes that should only be applied for root canals and dentures. I asked Dr. Halbleib's office about the codes but they assured me that they were the codes they always use and that we were quoted the wrong rates at the consultation. They also mentioned that the person that gave us the quote had be fired for other false quotes. After much back-and-forth we ended up getting the bill reduced to half. I have requested the receipt showing the new amount as paid, but am yet to receive it. I will be furious, but not surprised, if this ends up showing as a medical collection. read more

All staff has been very courteous to my family and my daughters say the hygienists are gentle and caring. I know bad dentists and this is not one. The worst is Western Dental who damaged my teeth. I was thrilled to change dentists back to this office because Jesse Halbleib does the best work and takes pride in his work and rightfully so. He even decided to get rid of a vericose vein in my lip because he cares about the patient and their appearance. I can't imagine anyone saying anything bad about this office. I had a similar experience to the previous reviews and now unfortunately my family and I are definitely feeling the financial and physical burden of dental malpractice. I also went to Dr. Hableib because it was the only office that was covered under my insurance. I initially was impressed by how nice the office was and the staff, but I am frustrated and in pain after not one procedure but two. I had a filling & veneers taken care of back in October of 2011 for my two front teeth, which was quick and at first seemed painless. However, two weeks following the procedure I began feeling extreme sensitivity to hot and cold food and/or liquid which only worsened. I finally went back to Dr. Hableib and he surprisingly offered to redo the procedure for free because he obviously had done something wrong. I was still experiencing some sensitivity to hot and cold, but thought it would go away. This whole procedure cost me almost $600 and I was not about to spend another who knows how much to get it fixed by someone who did it wrong the first time. Luckily, I was moving and looked forward to switching to a better dentist. Two weeks later I started experiencing pain throughout my whole mouth and jaw, particularly where the procedure had been done. Within a few days the pain worsened to the point where I could barely open my mouth and I woke up one morning with my whole upper lip and gum swollen. I called Dr. Hableib asking what I should do and he said I needed to see a dentist right away because I needed a root canal, but prescribed me medication to pick up at a local pharmacy. Instead, I made an emergency visit to another dentist back in my hometown as my face swelled up more. My new dentist knew what was wrong right away and based on the X-Rays he said that Dr. Hableib had hit my nerve during the second redo procedure which then got infected and spread. I just got a root canal done and I am on antibiotics and pain medication and now had to thrown down another $900 to get this problem fixed so the infection wouldn't get any worse. Based on other reviews, it seems Dr. Hableib likes to make up problems or literally create them just to make more money, possibly to fund his giant office fish tank and fancy dental equipment that he obviously doesn't know how to use. I am frustrated and I feel ignorant for not having gone to another dentist for a second opinion before having two procedures, but I think as patients with very particular dental insurance companies and policies we'd like to trust our doctors and dentists and not have to run around town looking for someone who is honest and cares about their patients health. I wish I would have read all of the reviews prior to going to Dr. Hableib's office. It saddens and angers me that so many people have had so many troubles with this dentist. I am considering contacting an attorney if he won't refund me for the procedure he did wrong. If anyone here on Yelp is interested in contacting me with your experience I'd really appreciate it. Everyone else's reviews terrified me, but this was the only place that took my insurance at the time so I went. I have since acquired different insurance and have stuck with Dr. Halbleib! Cleanings are great. Hygienists are knowledgable, friendly, and make me feel extremely comfortable. Dr. Halbleib always stops by to say hello. He makes you feel like he knows you. I was a little surprised by the cost when I needed 2 cavities filled, but they have held up great and I have needed no further work done in the last 3 years. I went to this dentist for a while. I had a crown, that Halbleib did himself, that was sensitive for a whole year and complained regularly but he did nothing, and then almost a year to the date he had to drill and compromise the crown and do a root canal. But the Worst was yet to come. I recently felt sensitivity in a tooth and he said I needed a crown. It was simple routine crown. But said I needed crown lengthen, laser and more totaling over $1400.00!!! I asked him if all these procedures were needed I am having financial hard times. He said yes all was needed but reassured me that my insurance covered most of it. So without my insurance he would have charged me $3000.00 for a simple crown?? I donot think so! I remembered the last root canal and crown he did on one tooth had cost me 1400.00 not just the crown? So I got a second opinion and another Dentist confirmed that he WAS charging me for services that I surely did NOT NEED. Then when I called Jesse Halbleib and I talked to the manager who wrote the estimate and told her my issue but she said that Halbleib was on vacation and would call me when he returned - 2 months later I am still waiting for his call. But I did switch dentists mean while. I could never recommend him. He is a gold digger and messing with my oral health! read more

i rarely write reviews, but sure wish I'd read the Yelp reviews before I went here. Same story; they were the only local office that took my insurance. My mom was a dental hygenist and I have always taken very good care of my teeth. Gavin McClure has been my dentist forever. I went to this office, had the same scam of three appointments thrust on me, and was told I was going to need $15,000 worth of work. And I needed a nightguard right away too. I went back to Dr. McClure yesterday and showed him the quotes for each tooth and cost associated with each. I think he was shocked. There is nothing that needs to be done right away. I'm taking those quotes, my films, my dental history and everything else I can get my hands on and am submitting it to the CA State Licensing Board and the BBB. Do NOT go here!!!!!! Jesse halblieb permanently screwed my mouth up good. He made dentures for me that were horrible. The bite was off which caused massive gum and bone reduction down the line. When I finally got enough money together to get new ones my mouth was beyond repair. Now I need bone grafting among other procedures that I could never afford. I wish I didn't have to write this because he is a nice guy, but I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I have because of his horrible work. My new dentist looked at his work and grimaced saying "he must do his own lab work" My face is sunken in dramatically now. I look 10 maybe 15 years older than I should. Unfortunately I had a similar experience with Dr. Halbleib. I went to him because he was the only dentist covered under my insurance. Before seeing him, I had not been to see any dentist in over three years and knew I has some issues in my mouth and was prepared for it to be on the expensive side. I did the new patient exam, paid up and made another appointment to get the first 2 of many cavities filled. When I went back for the cavities he did one, then said I would probably need a root canal for the other so he left it alone until I could make an appointment with an endodontic. The bill for the one filling was over $300, but when I went over the hill for the root canal it was only $90!!!! This was the first warning something was off, but I was still just grateful to have any kind of coverage that I didnt really question it. When I went to get a quote on the crown, Halbleib's office tild me it was going to be over $2000. This didnt seem right to me, so I called my insurance (blue shield of California) and they said my copay for a crown should be only $125!! So where did this extra $2000 dollars come from?, I asked, and the insurance lady told me that sometimes it can be a bit more depending on the type of mental/materials they use, but it shouldn't be as much as $2000. So I went back to talk to Halbleibs office and was told that the office manager is the one that does the price quotes and deals with insurance claims so I would have to bring it up with her. I did, she said she would look in to it. After several attempts to get her on the phone, I finally received a letter in the mail. All the letter contained was the same treatment plan that I was originally given, no reduction of price and no explanations, just a bunch of dental codes and abbreviations ( like I know what they all mean). There's definitely something fishy going on in that office, because after calling my insurance back to check codes/prices I found out that Halbleib's office had never turned in any claims to my insurance. I was in his office multiple times, got xrays, fillings, even got my teeth clean, and not a single $ of it was with my insurance, he charged me everything out of pocket and lead me to believe that it was just my insurance copay. I'm pretty sure thats the definition of thievery. So for over a year now I've just had the same temporary crown that I got with the root canal, luckily that guy ( Lawrence Puccinelli) knew what he was doing! Bottom line, Weather he knows it or not, Dr Halbleibs office will rip you off. read more

I did not have a good experience at this office. I went in for a teeth cleaning in March 2013 and spent 1.5 hours there getting x-rays and having them examine my teeth. Then the dentist sat down with me and discussed the photos they took of my teeth. He wouldn't give me a direct answer when I asked him whether or not I had any cavities...he said I had some decay and told me to come back for my follow-up appointment and cleaning, at which time he would make treatment recommendations. When I went back a few days later, I had my teeth cleaned...the hygienist was skilled and did a great job. Then the dentist sat with me again and told me that I had five recommended fillings and told me why. He also said that we would keep an eye on two additional teeth. Then I met with one of the other office people in a different room, who informed me that the total cost for their treatment recommendations was around $2000 and that my share after insurance would be $600. I have never had a cavity before, at age 30, and have only had two sealants where my molars have deep grooves. So I was suspicious when they said I needed five fillings. Plus the cost seemed very high, especially since I have dental insurance! I went and got a second opinion at a local dentist recommended by one of my co-workers. After examining my teeth, this dentist said I needed one filling where I had some decay and recommended sealants in the rest of my molars where I have deep grooves. I told him about my experience at Dr. Halbleib's office and he said he had heard the same thing from other patients. In the end, I only had one filling, as well as four sealants, and I had to pay nothing. I will never go back to Dr. Halbleib's office and I don't appreciate dentists recommending expensive treatment that is not necessary. read more

Same story as the majority of the rest of these reviews. Dr. Halbleib was the only dentist that my insurance would accept. I had 2 crowns done by him that he charged me over $2000 as my co-payment. Then he wanted to remove 2 of my gold crowns that I had no problems with for over 20 years. One of the 2 crowns started to hurt shortly after Dr. Halbleib finished it. When he took off the temporary crown. It felt like he had pulled my tooth out. In addition, he had a whole list of fillings he wanted to replace for me. That is when I knew it was time to have another dentist's opinion on replacing my 2 gold crowns. I drove 40 miles for the second dentist. He said that both of the crowns that Dr. Halbleib did, needed to be re-done. The one that felt like he had pulled out when he removed the temporary crown. Had abcessed and resulted in a root canal. The other crown had gaps under it and would decay or break off at the base if it was not replaced. The 2 gold crowns were perfect and did not need any changes and all of my fillings did not need to be replaced. The second dentist charged me a fraction of the co-payments, for even more more work on the 2 replacement crowns. Than I had paid Dr. Halbleib to do in the first place. Save your teeth and do not trust Dr. Halbeib. He his over priced and not even capible of simple dentistry. Very bad experience here also. I like to write positive reviews, but cannot for this doctor's office. I went there in December 2012, because an amalgam filling had broken off and I guess I swallowed it, I was worried about possible poisoning and also wanted to see what to do with the remaining tooth. I got in the chair and a girl proceeded to x-ray me. The first picture showed the top of the tooth but not the entire root. She made a 2nd and 3rd attempt, none of the pictures showed the tooth as she wanted. I don't think that I am to blame for this as I had x-rays taken over the years and never a technician needed 3 attempts to take an x-ray. Or worse, 3 failed attempts. The doctor then came in and calmed me down, I won't die of mercury poisoning. He spent about 3-5 minutes with me and sent me then to meet with a financial advisor to discuss payment plans as I had no dental insurance. I told him I pay cash, no problem, I don't do payment plans. On my way out I had to pay $270 for the 3 failed x-rays. I think that's a bit too much. I was glad that he told me that I would not die of mercury poisoning.. I guess that was worth $100. I asked them the next day to give me the x-rays, they said that they would mail them to me.. it's been 5 months, I never received them. Not a big loss, since no other doctor would want to do any diagnosis based on those failed x-rays pictures anyway!! read more

Horrible experience. I never write reviews, but was shocked by many red flags that for some reason I choose to ignore. They were supposed to bill my insurance 100% for the cleaning. Long story short, they charged me $300 for a simple cleaning. They tried to charge me an extra $150 for "lasering" off my gums, which I told them I did not want. I have zero fillings or cavaties in my mouth and zero gym disease. Total rip off! On the phone right now with my insurance trying to get some relief. Not to mention she wanted to numb my mouth with shots (NEVER have I had that done). I declined and she was very rough on my mouth and said "everyone asks why they bleed during the cleaning, but it is just from the tarter build up). Very stressful and painful cleaning. I had a very stressful and bad experience at this office. The staff is very rude and the doctor is the best sales man there is. I was told my whole mouth needed work, from fillings to crowns to bone reconstruction. All of that was not needed. I went there to get an appointment for a simple cleaning and I was told I was not eligible and all they could do is a deep cleaning, only partly covered by my insurance, and my out of pocket was 500$. As I said "no thank you I can't afford it", the staff became aggressive and rude. This is not the way patients should be treated. Do yourself a favor and find another dentist. read more

My experience with Dr. Halbleib has been similar to the others who have left comments. I switched to him as my other dentist was not covered on my new insurance plan. Initially, I admit to being "impressed" by the nice office and shiny equipment. However, after the first cleaning I got the sales pitch - cracked tooth would need a root canal and need to replace a filling. Of course, insurance would only cover part, leaving me with roughly a $2000 bill. They also tried to sell the expensive mouth guard. I've since bought one much cheaper on Amazon.com. Jesse Halbleib made me feel like a stupid little child, when i showed myself skeptical to all the procedures that he recommended. It seems that there are few teeth in my mouth that are healthy and all the other dentist prior to him were doing mediocre work. Thus, he suggested several crowns and root canals among other things and the first bill for three teeth would come to about $4,000 (with insurance!). But i am more shocked about how Halbleib seems to treat patients and staff alike - I am happy that i can go to another dentist, even if i have to drive for many miles, but it would be a lot more difficult to change employer, if i had to work for him. I was looking for a new dentist and wanted to try out this office since it was on my insurance plan. Called in for a cleaning but the assistant stated no cleanings before the dr exams you. I should have known this really meant the big sales pitch is coming. Yes sure enuf, $37 dollar cleaning I wanted ( after spending $102 for sales pitch I mean exam and X-rays ) turned into a $397 deep cleaning. I scheduled the appoint but latter canceled. Wow, I just read through the other reviews about MY dentist. I have been a patient there for well over 5 maybe 8 years. I have only gone for cleanings and root planings and I am a candidate for more, which they mention but don't push. I have no complaints. Clean office, high tech equipment, water etch cleaner, 180-degree x-ray -- which showed me my advanced bone loss that my previous dentist never mentioned. Have you ever seen "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman? He's the dentist in the movie! This man should have his license taken away from him. I should have taken the clue while waiting to see him when I heard a woman moaning and groaning in the next room. But no, I allowed him to remove a tooth. It felt like my brain was being yanked out of my head. I left there shaking and crying. I have never, ever had an experience like that before. Instead of taking the clue that I was feeling the extraction, he continued rather than stopping and numbing the area more. He must enjoy seeing people in pain. And when all was said and done, not an apology or display of compassion. Don't know how he sleeps at night. It's a crime that people like him are in practice.I feel so bad for all the people that have had negative experiences with him and then had to turn around and pay him!!! I have been a patient of Dr. Halbleib for about 10 years. I have no complaints about the quality of his work. He has, so far, done a good job on my teeth. The latest I had done was two implants. First he removed two teeth and then I went through the implant process which required about 1 year to complete due to the required healing in between procedures. I have also had root canals and crowns done. He is personally very pleasant and has a good "chair-side" manner. I have to say that I was very apprehensive about the implants, but it all went smoothly and 5 months later, all seems to be well. My husband is also a patient of Dr. Halbleib. He has had a lot of work done too, root canals and crowns. He has also been generally satisfied with the work. Anytime he has had a problem with adjustment, or whatever, they have been responsive. The only thing I will say that is negative is that Dr. Halbleib is very expensive. I have not compared his costs to what other dentists might charge for the same procedures, but from what my husband and I have heard from friends, it seems that dental costs in this area have risen far above the average cost of living. We are retired and we don't have dental insurance. His assistant Julie is very comptetent and personable. She took good care of me while I was undergoing the implant procedure. I am very grateful to her and feel lucky to have her there whenever I am in the office for dental work. Ginee is our dental hygienist. I'm amazed at how consistent the story seems to be regarding this dentist. With a recent change in employment, our dental insurance coverage changed as well. This meant we needed to find a new dentist, and Dr. Halblieb was the only one covered in Santa Cruz. My first visit, which I understood would be a consultation and cleaning, turned out to be an hour long, with a 30 minute wait in the office. I was told this visit was for Xrays and a doctor visit, I would need to return for the cleaning, which couldn't be scheduled for at least another month. Today I went for that cleaning. After yet again waiting for 25 minutes in the waiting room, I was ushered into a consultation room, where Dr. Halblieb informed me I would need 4 crowns (at $1150.00 each!) and a mouth guard ($525). Out of curiosity, I asked the cost of each crown without the insurance and was astounded to hear $2400 apiece! I asked him why my previous long time dentist had never indicated these issues (my last visit with my dentist of long standing had only been a few months before). I was never given a direct answer. I agree with the earlier assessment, as I too, felt like I was dealing with a 'slick salesman.' I was still willing to get my teeth cleaned, since that was what I originally went in for, and was horrified by the incompetence of the hygienist. It was like living the movie, "Marathon Man." She was heavy handed and inept. I asked if she would use the usual hand held cleaning tools, rather than the high powered water-pick equipment she inexpertly wielded, but was told that while they had those tools, she was the technician and would use what she thought best. I calmly, but firmly said, "We are done here," and left. I am writing a formal letter of complaint to their office as well as the Better Business Bureau and the Dental Board of California. We will now have to purchase another, more expensive dental plan in order to return seeing our long-time dentist, but it's worth it! read more

Man reading these reviews reminds me of my experience. I literally have had 3 cavities my whole life. The hygienist asked me if I flossed everyday and I admitted I was not a daily flosser, I know, I am a bad guy. That being said I have had 3 cavities, so there. After the hygienist checked all my pockets I could tell she was irritated that everything looked great, no problems. Next thing I know I am taken into the sales room and told I needed to have 7 to 10 thousand dollars worth of work done. Whaaaat? I never went back. I probably would have gone back if I didn't feel like I was getting hustled. I have also had a bad experience with Dr. Halbleib. My mom recommended I see him because he took my insurance. I called and scheduled a cleaning, and was told I was getting a cleaning. When I went in for my appointment, I definitely did not get a cleaning. I got x-rays and a lot of "oh well that's not good" comments. He did a "new patient" exam, and it was incredibly painful!! He explained it was only painful because I was not taking care of my teeth. I brush and floss twice daily. I was not convinced. After the painful exam and no cleaning, Dr. Halbleib proceeded to tell me that I needed to make another appointment for a consultation. He told me he was going to look over what he found during the exam and "see what he could do". He made it sound like my mouth was just going to fall apart! He honestly terrified me and made me feel like I had some sort of disease in my mouth. I had to schedule an appointment for the consultation and a SEPARATE appointment to get the cleaning I had initially asked for. I ended up canceling both appointments later on after receiving the OUTRAGEOUS BILL for my first appointment, even with help from my insurance! I will never return to Dr. Halbleib's office. Do not trust this dental office. I can't say I had bad dentistry there but I can say I probably got work that was unnecessary and I was definitely overcharged. My husband and I went to this dentist several years ago for the same reason as most people. They seem to take every insurance policy and it's obvious why. It's a scam so they can bill outrageous prices for work that does not need to be done. Each and every time we had to go there we were quoted ridiculous prices which I had to negotiate with them. They usually "knocked off some of the charges" in the consultation but inevitably when the bills arrived they overcharged each and every time and I would have to call to dispute the charges. Horrible experience. Unprofessional and rude staff. I would not recommend there are better dentists in town.

yup, this guy is a shady crook! I tell everyone that will listen not to go to this guy. My story is the same as the other reviews, but worse! My husband and I went separately right before the end of the year and we got the same story... we needed crowns, then that he had to go deeper and we had to pay extra for a "pulp cap" which we had already signed a form saying was okay to do and not covered by insurance. Then when we each had pain, we were told we needed root canals! CROOK! We now go to Dr. Biles who is amazing and honest. The good news about this was that I was in so much pain during the holidays that I didn't over eat! read more
