Consisting of five chambers, the caverns were formed by the karstification or dissolving of the limestone by water. In the past, the cavern was also referred to as "Rentzheimer's Cave" or the "Lost Cave". The "Lost River", so named because the source and mouth of the river have not yet been discovered, flows through it. The temperature in the cave is consistently close to 52 °F (11 °C). The area on the surface of the cavern was a limestone quarry in the 19th century. In 1883, quarry workers ignited a black powder blast to remove limestone from the cliff face. In doing so, they discovered the entrance to the cavern. The first systematic exploration of the cavern didn't take place until three years later. In the years following the cavern's discovery, local residents found the underground spaces ideal for a variety of uses. During the late 1800s, a wooden dance floor was constructed in what is now called the "Crystal Chapel". Regular dances were held in the natural air conditioning of the cave. Irwin Gilman purchased the cave in 1929 and opened it to the public the following year. It is still owned and operated for tours by the Gilman family today. A small museum and gift shop stand above the surface of the cave entrance. From 1949 - 2009, the "Crystal Chapel" was available for weddings and other private ceremonies. Approximately 35,000 tourists explore the caverns annually. My family and I visited the Lost River Caverns this past summer while we were visiting relatives in the area. My wife and I had previously visited some natural caverns in upstate New York years ago. This was the first time that we explored caverns since we became parents. Both of our young sons loved exploring all of the various chambers. The tour was fun for the whole family. Our sons also enjoying learning about the different geological features such as stalactites, stalagmites, and fluorescent rocks. We even bought a toy miners helmet in the gift shop for our older son. If you're looking for a fun family activity to do in the Lehigh Valley, then we recommend visiting the Lost River Caverns.

Our cave guide was enthusiastic and knew her stuff, handling questions as the tour progressed. If you've never been in a cave before you might be impressed but if you have , well I think you'll be disappointed. There aren't all that many types of formations to look at and those that are there are not all that impressive. We picked here because in our local area we have only been to Crystal Cave and thought we'd give it a shot. Glad we did but would recommend Crystal Cave over here. That said, if you've been to say Luray Caverns in Virginia then you won't be blown away by either of them!

There are 3-4 different loops and based on the time you have you can choose one path .. yellow loops are average difficulty .. it does have some path which is a little steep steps, but not difficult for middle age people.. might be a little stressful for elderly people with knee pain issues.. there is also a red loop which is a lot more of Walk and takes more time.. there are maps showing each path and approximate distance.. parking is a bit crazy, especially near the entrance.. parking is free.. tickets are about $21 which isn't too bad . When you grow up in Northeast PA (NEPA), you go to the Coal Mine Tour. Now from my childhood I only remembered that there was an incline that you descended and that it was slightly cold underground, so I decided to revisit the tour as an adult on a recent trip home to NEPA. I have to say that it is an incredibly eye-opening tour as an adult. You don your hardhat and take a car down a shaft into the mine itself. Your guide then takes you through parts of the mine and educates you on how mining was done in this area at the turn of the century. This was backbreaking, awful work and I couldn't be happier that this is no longer a job for people in this area. Having grown up in the area, it's incredibly humbling to look a breaker boy and think that it would have been my job if I was born 100 years earlier. The Coal Mine tour is a very educational activity and one that I would recommend to anyone who's visiting or to anyone who may have done the tour as a child and who would want to revisit it as an adult.

After touring with Luke twice in 2011 (group tour as a couple in April then a private tour on a…read moregirls trip in October) when we were planning our itinerary for our trip back to NYC in November 2025 with our 11 year old son, Real New York Tours was the top of our list. We chose the private family tour and booking was quick and easy and the customer service as great as I remembered. On to the tour itself: Luke met us at the Museum of Natural History on time and we got reacquainted. My son is autistic and can have some trouble warming to new people but absolutely no the case with Luke, he immediately put my son at ease and they were chatting like old friends as we made our way into Central Park. The tour covered loads of Central Park, including an exciting off track visit to a secret cave, the plaza hotel, grand central station, some fun subway rides, and concluded at the Brooklyn Bridge.
