Schmidt R Thomas, MD - The waiting room early morning.

Yes, the wait can be long as he spends time with those in early stages of treatment, but the demeanor in the waiting room is jovial and supportive. Everyone just smiles when they walk in to see 30 or more patients waiting their turn and telling their stories. I was referred to Dr. Schmidt by my primary for treatment. I estimate that he has been practicing for over 30 years and is quite experienced. First visit, he spent an hour studying my history before drawing conclusions. He sent me for additional testing and to other specialists before determining treatment plan. He is very thorough and takes a lot of notes. He is friendly and takes time to explain things in layman terms. He seeks input from other doctors. And carefully lays out options. He called me at home several times to consult. My surgery went as explained. He connects well with patients. His staff is ok. His nurse, Kathy, was particularly helpful answering unwrought questions for me and making other appointments. At one point she spent an hour on the phone with me answering questions. She is also 5 stars. The reception staff can be slow and non compassionate at times. That is really my only complaint. Their goal is to get that insurance card and credit card information. The building is conveniently located with lots of parking. The waiting room can be a little tight when full and I noticed elderly folks have trouble maneuvering the maze of chairs and going up and back to the reception window and around the corners to the exam rooms. But no one ever complains. I highly recommend Dr. Schmidt. I have learned to make my appointments early in the morning so the wait is not as long. But I miss hearing the stories.

Being diagnosed with metastatic cancer at a young age and having to spend your life in treatment isn't easy. There's been ups and downs, scares, changes in status and treatment and a long list of side effects. The doctors, nurses, office staff and techs have been with me the whole time. They always take time to ask how I am, understand my goals for treatment and life. Are there times that you have wait? Yes Are there days that they are backed up? Yes. But when it's your time with the Doctor and you need extra time for questions, they always find those extra minutes to comfort you and your family. Are there days that there's a million people getting treatment? Sure. But when you're starting treatment and unsure, scared and confused the nurses will sit down and explain step by step what is happening and why. They are compassionate, caring and competent. I've been in treatment every week for five years. I've watched this team save countless lives and I've watched them mourn every loss. Cancer sucks, but there's no one else I'd pick to fight this battle with. Dr. Birhary is an angel.

Mohs Surgery was thoroughly discussed as my primary option, which I agreed to. If I have to be told I have cancer, then skin cancer is the least frightening for me. Don't get me wrong, NO one wants to hear they have any type of cancer, but I'm told this should be simple to resolve. A large percentage of my paternal family have been diagnosed with colon cancer, so I feel extremely fortunate compared to that nasty cancer monster that took their lives. I stayed within the IU Network and came to Mohs Surgical Center with Dr. Syril Keena Que, who is a board certified dermatologist and Harvard-trained Mohs surgeon. She specializes in skin cancer surgery, including Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Her other clinical expertise includes melanoma surgery, treatment of rare skin tumors, and another decision-maker, skin cancers in high-risk populations, including patients with organ transplants, leukemia/lymphoma, and other forms of chronic immunosuppression. Her credentials, experience, and knowledge were exactly what I needed, and I felt she was an excellent choice to perform my surgery. Dr. Que is a very personable surgeon who is eloquent and candid, especially during surgery. I was well informed of what was accruing, and I think this helped me be unflappable. The office is located across from IU North Hospital on the same side of US 31 with free parking and a large parking lot. My wait time was seconds, and I was brought to a comfortable procedure room where I would remain for the entire surgery, including the examination of the skin tissue removed. It is extremely convenient, and I appreciate not being shuffled from room to room. Dr. Que's nurse, Haley, was amazing as well. From the moment she greeted me, explained each step, bandaged me up to post-operative instructions, I felt safe, well-cared for, and in extremely capable hands. Thank you, Haley! I was provided with 3 nurses' phone numbers and a direct text number to Dr. Que in case of questions or emergencies. Excellent care from the beginning to walking out the door. The post-operative instructions are excellent. It was difficult to remember all the information and instructions provided throughout the procedure. No worries, I could review the thoroughly written instructions, which I have done several times now that I'm home. I can highly recommend Dr. Que after the excellent work, attentive care, knowledge level, and experience level shown.

He was dismissive and condescending to my questions and inquiries, and diagnosed the reason for my anemia based on my demographic and nothing more. He made an assumption that may or may not be the cause. I am back to square one. He also used foul language in my appt, which I wasn't expecting, and offered a long list of why he, too, is tired, one being that his wife is mean to him. That was 100% awkward and inappropriate.

I was unable to assist with her appointments and she passed in 60 short days. I have no opinion of Dr. Milton or his staff based on that experience. My father was diagnosed with cancer in July and it has been one negligent act after another by Milton and his staff. At first I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt due to COVID. It has become clear after scans, tests and appointments being rescheduled that someone is dropping the ball. I have been in contact with the health insurance provider and it would appear that Milton himself is failing to follow up with requested peer to peer evals. As an example, my father went five days without eating because the tumor was pressed against his esophagus, Milton failed to do the requested peer to peer, went on vacation and the radiologist had to do it. Pathetic to say the least. He has admittedly went into the wrong patient room leaving us waiting for over an hour and he consistently leaves patients waiting. I try to forgive this as he has no idea what the patient will ask. During our last visit, his nurse/assistant sarcastically asked about my "little blue folder"? Quite frankly, I have to keep track of things in a folder because their office has dropped the ball repeatedly. Finally, the so called clinical nurse phone line NEVER returns calls. EVER!!! I would be embarrassed to treat patients in this manner. If my father wasn't already in treatment, I would take him elsewhere. I sincerely hope no other patient has to experience what we have been through during an already difficult time!

The office called and was highly professional in their interaction, providing very detailed instructions on how to find the office, including the correct door to enter through. That made everything go extremely smoothly on the day that I arrived to meet with Dr. Zappia. The office staff were invaluable, pleasant, and timely. I was in the office getting my vitals quickly, and the nurse was great. Dr. Zappia, on the other hand, is wonderful. He is kind, empathetic, listens to what you are saying, and then takes the time to talk with you and answer questions. He is direct with his responses and thorough. I could not have asked for a better surgeon. The day of the surgery arrived, and Dr. Zappia ensured everything was going well and performed a great job during my surgery. He was able to perform the surgery quickly, and my incision was small and healing well. He came out and spoke with my husband, ensuring that everyone was well-informed throughout the day of the surgery and after. Dr. Zappia even called me before the end of the day on Friday to give me my pathology results, noting, "I didn't want you worrying all weekend". I loved that he showed that compassion for his patient. I highly recommend Dr. Zappia and his staff. I will return as a patient if I ever need general surgery in the future.
