Is there anything quite as unnerving as sitting with your doctor when an unusual lab result pops up…read moreand you suddenly find yourself referred to a Cancer Center? I think not. I've had a couple of occasions in my life when Cancer had to be ruled out, but today's experience with Franciscan Physician Network Oncology & Hematology Specialists was the first time a lab result actually led to my referral to such a center. So, I dutifully packed up my work desk early today and headed to the Franciscan campus on South Emerson Avenue only a few blocks from the Marion/Johnson County line. My primary care doctor's thorough analysis of recent test results had led her to dig a bit deeper than usual. Even the Oncologist seemed a bit surprised at the tests she'd ordered. Just as it seemed we were getting everything ruled out, she came across one particularly troubling result and announced that she would make the referral. Usually, because I'm a non-compliant jerk, she's careful to say "You don't have to, of course, but I think you should." This time, she simply said "I'm making the referral." Fortunately, the lab in question was only slightly outside the normal range. She wasn't in panic mode and assured me I shouldn't be either. Regardless, she said it could be serious and I needed to get it checked just in case it would get worse. I live in Lawrence and work downtown. Driving to nearly Greenwood is not my idea of a good time - especially in the middle of a busy afternoon, but I did so. This practice is located in the Cancer Care Center. Having been hanging out with friend and fellow Yelper Ken N. during his dealings with Cancer, I wasn't taking any of this lightly. The practice is in Suite 101 - an obviously first floor suite near the entrance. They are still being careful in terms of the pandemic - you stop at a sort of info booth and pick up a visitor badge. Then, you head to your appointment. Masks are required and will be supplied if you show up without one. All staff were wearing masks. Interestingly, I thought the waiting area was a little weak in terms of social distancing. However, most were trying to naturally enforce it. The practice has a warm decor that is rather soothing. I felt calmer just being in it. While I was hopeful, I was also aware that I could easily be getting informed I had Cancer. As I was alone, I had taken off the rest of the afternoon just in case I needed to process. The sign-in process was easy. I confirmed by text. I had to sign a few papers since this was my first time with this practice. My primary care physician had made sure everything was sent over - plus, I participate in electronic records and the doctor had access to recent labs and my late 2019 hospitalization records. My appointment was scheduled for 30 minutes. I was taken to my room by a nurse within 5 minutes of my scheduled time. Intake staff were friendly and helpful. Art work is a tad bland (mostly neutral colors and abstract images of trees or nature). The nurse was friendly and did the usual intake procedures. My physician, whom I will likely review after additional visits, looked through my records and discussed the concerns. He seemed to "get it" very quickly and had an understanding of the situation. He checked through a few certain labs that would be more likely to indicate Cancer. Of course, the one lab was not promising but two others were fine. He explained his ideas. He explained options. He explained that he wanted to do one more test - if that one is within normal limits, it's almost certain I do not have Cancer. If it's not within normal limits, he will likely do additional testing. He tentatively scheduled me for an appointment in several months as he wants to monitor these labs. It's unnerving to go through this process. It was unnerving to watch people go in and out of their appointments. Yet, the staff was always warm and friendly and the environment encouraged a soothing, calm atmosphere. I'm waiting on my final lab result with some anxiety (of course). My doctor was very open about the fact that with my particular result, 90% of the time it's not Cancer. However, that 10% tends to be a serious cancer and one we would want to catch as early as possible. His demeanor was calm. He listened. He processed. He spoke in language that was easily understood. The practice also has an in-house lab. I admit I find this a bit weird, though I suppose it's helpful for all those who are actually getting chemo and other treatments. As this is a healthcare facility, there is accessible parking with automatic doors and the room was somewhat tight but generally wheelchair friendly. This is certainly not an experience anyone wants, but I've grown quite happy with the Franciscan Network and today's experience with the Cancer Center was no exception.

Being diagnosed with metastatic cancer at a young age and having to spend your life in treatment isn't easy. There's been ups and downs, scares, changes in status and treatment and a long list of side effects. The doctors, nurses, office staff and techs have been with me the whole time. They always take time to ask how I am, understand my goals for treatment and life. Are there times that you have wait? Yes Are there days that they are backed up? Yes. But when it's your time with the Doctor and you need extra time for questions, they always find those extra minutes to comfort you and your family. Are there days that there's a million people getting treatment? Sure. But when you're starting treatment and unsure, scared and confused the nurses will sit down and explain step by step what is happening and why. They are compassionate, caring and competent. I've been in treatment every week for five years. I've watched this team save countless lives and I've watched them mourn every loss. Cancer sucks, but there's no one else I'd pick to fight this battle with. Dr. Birhary is an angel.

You have come to the right place. With extreme gratitude is…read morewritten from two heartfelt parents to Dr Kesler (thoracic oncologic surgeon), Becky (his nurse), Dr Patel (CV surgeon) and the entire team at Heart & Vascular Hospital. Our son is alive and well thanks to these superlative clinicians! To elaborate: Mother's Day week in 2025 , our 21 year old son was diagnosed with a rare, one in 10 million large mediastinal germ cell tumor back in Oregon. His promising young life was abruptly turned upside down. In short order, he had 4 cycles of powerful inpatient chemotherapy and his Indiana trained, Portland based oncologist, Dr Moore set up a referral to Dr Kesler to remove his post chemotherapy residual chest mass. Time was of the essence. From the word go, Dr Kesler's nurse Becky jumped on things: rapidly arranging the referral, facilitating the accurate transfer of medical info for Dr Kesler to view, and promptly setting up a pre op and surgical date within 1 month of his last chemotherapy. While Becky orchestrated our son's logistics, she made it paramount to connect on a human level with our son's mom, and alleviate her concerns and giving realistic hope. Next, was the phone consult with Dr Kesler where he spoke with our son and both parents...yet focusing on our son directly. He told him of the seriousness of the surgery, the real operative risks, and potential outcomes. Our son (and us) left the conversation with the confidence that this committed surgeon who pioneered this surgery for this tumor was the exact guy for the job! We all felt hope and felt it was God ordained. The preop visit in Indianapolis, engineered by Becky made his mom feel encouraged after hearing a very human, inspiring story she shared about one of her personal friends. Becky's friend was given six months to live, Dr. Kesler performed her surgery, and she is doing well 21 years later. Becky has been Dr. Kesler's nurse for 38 years. That made all the difference to his mom a few days before a harrowing surgery. The day of the surgery came and Dr Kesler and Dr Patel performed brilliantly with measurable success. The surgery only took 50% of the time anticipated, and the tumor was removed entirely without complications. Postop he went to the ICU for 5 days, with Dr Kesler's conservative approach, for a young patient with this gravity of surgery paying off. The entire multidisciplinary team was stellar and compassionate--angelic nurses, OT, PT, RT, nutrition, Dr Kesler's surgical PAs, the intensivists, and numerous others (we failed to mention) delivering compassionate skilled care to him daily. Their memory bring us to tears while writing this!! Thank you all! This is a story has an incredibly happy ending. Our wonderful son is now healing well 3 weeks post op, and the surgical margins came back clear with the most favorable histologic tissue diagnosis possible! He now can travel back to Oregon and resume his life. To attend law school. Have a wife one day. A family. A life filled with hope. So, Community Health Network please give a clinical medal of honor to Dr Kesler, Becky and Dr Patel, post haste. Master clinicians, humble and skilled who saved our son's life. To all the team at Heart & Vascular, he and his future family will never forget you

Dr. Kesler is very well known throughout the world and is a phenomenon really. People from all walks of life and from all over the globe come to see this man who has paved the way in how things out to get done. He is an all star out here, as are Dr. Lawrence Einhorn (the man who founded the cure to testicular cancer and was the reason we first came out to Indianapolis at IU to get perfect treatment/guidance) as well as Dr. Richard Foster, another superior surgeon who is also a household name. These 3 men each take care of one part and work with Einhorn (oncologist) to fix up and heal people with their miraculous hands. Thank goodness for these folks who live to give life. Every nurse at IU hospital know these doctors and I have heard 1/3 of the patients come to be in the care of these doctors.

Mohs Surgery was thoroughly discussed as my primary option, which I agreed to. If I have to be told I have cancer, then skin cancer is the least frightening for me. Don't get me wrong, NO one wants to hear they have any type of cancer, but I'm told this should be simple to resolve. A large percentage of my paternal family have been diagnosed with colon cancer, so I feel extremely fortunate compared to that nasty cancer monster that took their lives. I stayed within the IU Network and came to Mohs Surgical Center with Dr. Syril Keena Que, who is a board certified dermatologist and Harvard-trained Mohs surgeon. She specializes in skin cancer surgery, including Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Her other clinical expertise includes melanoma surgery, treatment of rare skin tumors, and another decision-maker, skin cancers in high-risk populations, including patients with organ transplants, leukemia/lymphoma, and other forms of chronic immunosuppression. Her credentials, experience, and knowledge were exactly what I needed, and I felt she was an excellent choice to perform my surgery. Dr. Que is a very personable surgeon who is eloquent and candid, especially during surgery. I was well informed of what was accruing, and I think this helped me be unflappable. The office is located across from IU North Hospital on the same side of US 31 with free parking and a large parking lot. My wait time was seconds, and I was brought to a comfortable procedure room where I would remain for the entire surgery, including the examination of the skin tissue removed. It is extremely convenient, and I appreciate not being shuffled from room to room. Dr. Que's nurse, Haley, was amazing as well. From the moment she greeted me, explained each step, bandaged me up to post-operative instructions, I felt safe, well-cared for, and in extremely capable hands. Thank you, Haley! I was provided with 3 nurses' phone numbers and a direct text number to Dr. Que in case of questions or emergencies. Excellent care from the beginning to walking out the door. The post-operative instructions are excellent. It was difficult to remember all the information and instructions provided throughout the procedure. No worries, I could review the thoroughly written instructions, which I have done several times now that I'm home. I can highly recommend Dr. Que after the excellent work, attentive care, knowledge level, and experience level shown.

I was unable to assist with her appointments and she passed in 60 short days. I have no opinion of Dr. Milton or his staff based on that experience. My father was diagnosed with cancer in July and it has been one negligent act after another by Milton and his staff. At first I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt due to COVID. It has become clear after scans, tests and appointments being rescheduled that someone is dropping the ball. I have been in contact with the health insurance provider and it would appear that Milton himself is failing to follow up with requested peer to peer evals. As an example, my father went five days without eating because the tumor was pressed against his esophagus, Milton failed to do the requested peer to peer, went on vacation and the radiologist had to do it. Pathetic to say the least. He has admittedly went into the wrong patient room leaving us waiting for over an hour and he consistently leaves patients waiting. I try to forgive this as he has no idea what the patient will ask. During our last visit, his nurse/assistant sarcastically asked about my "little blue folder"? Quite frankly, I have to keep track of things in a folder because their office has dropped the ball repeatedly. Finally, the so called clinical nurse phone line NEVER returns calls. EVER!!! I would be embarrassed to treat patients in this manner. If my father wasn't already in treatment, I would take him elsewhere. I sincerely hope no other patient has to experience what we have been through during an already difficult time!
