The refried beans had the most flavor and were good for the plate. The rice had the least amount of flavor, but it all worked out. My wife didn't eat much of the nachos and said that it was missing something. Don't take this review too seriously because I love Tex-mex and this is not it. La Sierra was approximately a 35-minute drive from our home in the western suburbs. We arrived at approximately 8:30 AM. As we drove up my wingman John commented that he would not have come into this neighborhood or restaurant if I was not with him. Yes, the neighborhood was a bit rough (I grew up in Pilsen in the 1960's) but to me it felt like home in Chicago. We walked in and were warmly greeted by the hostess and waitress and told to sit-down anywhere we wanted. We chose a booth in the second room of the restaurant; the walls were covered with photos of Mexico and the smell coming from the kitchen was heaven. Our waitress quickly approached us for our drink order, she mentioned that they had Cafe de la Olla (made with piloncillo-unrefined whole cane sugar from Latin America, and cinnamon sticks) which we both ordered. The coffee arrived in a colorful Mexican traditional mug (just the way my mother used to make me). It was delicious! We then ordered our breakfast, which was Mexican Chilaquiles (a traditional, comforting breakfast dish consisting of crispy tortilla chips simmered in red or green salsa until slightly softened) with eggs, meat & refired beans. We were both in "Heaven", the tortilla chips were perfectly cooked with just enough "Crisp" to them. Just the way my mother used to make me on a weekend morning. My wingman & I both agreed that we will be returning and bringing our fellow foodies with us to try the other dishes offered!

I settled on the Molcajete Mixto, which is an incredibly large pile of Chicken, Pork and Beef with red chili sauce, with peppers and onions, fresh cheese and Nopales served in a Molcajete. It was extremely rude and uncomfortable. We ordered the Tampiqueña, which is our usual choice, but this time it was very disappointing. The dish arrived missing tortillas and guacamole. The enchilada tasted off, the cheese was unpleasant, and the steak was overcooked. The rice and beans were only room temperature and didn't taste right either. I ended up only eating part of the steak. I was ready to leave, but my wife wanted to give them a chance to address the issue. First, I ordered a margarita that was $16 for a very small drink, which was definitely not worth the price. We were told it was made with Don Julio tequila, but honestly, it did not taste like Don Julio at all. There was also a flyer displayed at the front advertising $7 margaritas as the special of the day. After ordering, we were told that special was actually only for the night before. Fine -- but I didn't realize I was being charged $16 until the margarita was already brought to the table. Then came the food, which was extremely disappointing. The torta was mostly bread with barely any meat, and the burrito also had very little to no meat. For a Mexican restaurant, the portions and quality were simply not what we expected. The entire experience was disappointing from start to finish. We were there for a while and didn't see a single other customer, which honestly wasn't surprising given our experience. One other thing worth mentioning: this is not a full-service restaurant, but they still prompted us for a tip when paying the bill.
