It was a wonderful experience having Kristen as a vocal coach. The bottom line is that I improved…read morein my singing, my confidence increased significantly, and Kristen was a really multifaceted person with a lot of flexibility to meet my goals. I enjoyed my meetings with her. She always so the positives and the possibilities, even when it came to my own songs. She was extremely supportive of working on my original music and helped me feel confident with the few songs I wrote that were pretty high on my range. She's also a very real person, so we could focus but we could also laugh or acknowledge if we were struggling a bit that day. She offers all of her students, piano and singing, to participate in a recital that is hosted by an elderly care facility for which she volunteers her time, I believe to do singing or choir. I suggest for any potential student to take that opportunity in that low stress environment with Kristen's support and other supportive students to practice being in front of people. Also, the residents really appreciated it. While meeting in person would have been nice and probably has some advantages, working remotely was really convenient and still quite effective. I highly recommend Seattle City Music with Kristen for your vocal or piano lessons!

I've had nothing but positive experiences with Rachel as a vocal coach, even when concepts or…read moretechniques are challenging. The way she focuses on growth instead of perfection makes lessons feel so much more comfortable and less stressful than other coaches I've had in the past. She's really a one-stop shop for anything you might be having trouble with in your performance. Her strategies have helped me improve my breath support, helped me fix my tongue placement to get more consistent clear tone, and helped me connect to what I'm singing better so that emoting feels natural instead of forced. She's a great teacher with a ton of passion for what she does, which makes it so easy to want to come back and keep learning! Highly recommended.

I can't express enough how pleased I am with this music school. I've never seen the owner Leon, be…read moreanything but kind and patient with folks and my son adores him. We've been at the school now for about 2 and a half years. My 14 year old has been very happy and has learned so much from Leon. Leon has been caring and accommodating. Any time he can give me child an opportunity he goes out of his way to do so. Leon has a special relationship with my child and my son talks often about Leon and has recommended him to several friends. He tells people often how great his guitar teacher is. My son talks about wanting to stay in lessons till he's in college and beyond. That only comes when you have been made to feel special and cared for. My son is working currently with Willow as well in the youth rock orchestra and Willow is very patient with all the kids and my son is enjoying the band and Willow very much. I know the Flute teacher Jean and she's great and caring as well, and I've recently watched another teacher, I believe she's a violin teacher, work with the group of kids and she's a smiling face, helpful and kind. I've watched all the teachers as they come and go and I've never seen anyone treated in a way that I found unprofessional. My other son took 2 years of piano with Katya. I've found her to be just as kind and helpful. It's a family here, a family I'm proud to be a part of. I find it extremely hard to believe that anyone here was unprofessional to anyone and I've been here before the new owner took over, during the transition and after. I have only seen improvements since Leon. We have a larger, very nice space now and it's nice having more room to move. The school is clean and pleasant. The teachers give of themselves and have youth programs for kids who couldn't otherwise be able to take lessons. I've personally seen many staff doing the hard work of running these programs. I wouldn't hesitate to send my friends and their families to the federal way school of music. I proudly recommend them.

I worked with Susan while she was a professor at Seattle University. I was really nervous to begin…read morelearning guitar in a more formal way and she eased my anxieties immediately. I learned so much theory so quickly - I was shocked. The book she wrote that accompanies her lessons is nothing less than brilliant. She incorporates theory heavily into her lessons, but knows that having fun and being creative in your practice is just as important! I also remember having a particularly hard time in college once and it was really showing up in my practice and lessons - Susan really validated what I was going through and helped me navigate that time with so much compassion and kindness. I'll never forget it. You won't regret hiring Susan to learn guitar at any age, experience level or time in your life!

It was May, and I had an upper division jury at the end of the summer. My college professors gave me several things to work on, and I needed to find a teacher who could help me improve on those points within an extremely short, three month time span. I decided to start online lessons with Susan. Immediately after our first lesson, I felt supported by how specific she was in her weekly lesson plan. I was given very concrete things to work on each week, and I was encouraged to send recordings in between lessons and ask if I was grasping the concepts properly. Susan also has the perfect balance of praise and criticism. Study after study shows that people learn and improve more when they're encouraged. There aren't enough instructors in the world that understand how to make students feel supported while also helping them move towards their goals. Susan is a rare breed in that she does just that. She also gave me advice and tools on managing my performance anxiety. I ended up passing my upper division jury, and my professors commented on how much I'd improved. Even if I didn't pass my jury, I would have still given Susan a glowing testimonial because she is the best teacher I've ever had. I will forever be changed by Susan's teaching.
