It was May, and I had an upper division jury at the end of the summer. My college professors gave me several things to work on, and I needed to find a teacher who could help me improve on those points within an extremely short, three month time span. I decided to start online lessons with Susan. Immediately after our first lesson, I felt supported by how specific she was in her weekly lesson plan. I was given very concrete things to work on each week, and I was encouraged to send recordings in between lessons and ask if I was grasping the concepts properly. Susan also has the perfect balance of praise and criticism. Study after study shows that people learn and improve more when they're encouraged. There aren't enough instructors in the world that understand how to make students feel supported while also helping them move towards their goals. Susan is a rare breed in that she does just that. She also gave me advice and tools on managing my performance anxiety. I ended up passing my upper division jury, and my professors commented on how much I'd improved. Even if I didn't pass my jury, I would have still given Susan a glowing testimonial because she is the best teacher I've ever had. I will forever be changed by Susan's teaching.

His knowledge of the art of drumming is extensive and his lessons are always as informative as they are fun. He's great at breaking down complex rhythms into digestible parts that even someone with no music experience can master. For those who are more musically inclined, his more advanced ensemble classes allow you to explore densely layered rhythms and different techniques. I'm also a big fan of the intensive weekend workshops, or urban retreats, he holds. I attended a workshop where we learned a Senegalese Bak, which was a very cool rhythm. It was neat to hear the story behind how he learned it and the significance of the rhythm.

Just wanted to mention the great experience I've been having at the Fleming School of Music for the…read morepast year. I'm taking guitar and ukulele lessons, and I am really impressed with the quality of instruction. It's one thing to know how to play, but it really is an art to be able to convey this knowledge to others - and it's something they are very good at! I have taken some lessons at a couple other places in the Issaquah/Bellevue area, but for me, what sets the Fleming School of Music apart is that they have the whole package, and don't just provide me with lessons but also teach music theory and composition so I have a complete, well-rounded understanding as I move forward in my music education. The school has a computer lab where I have been able to go in and learn how to create my own music and do my own beat mixing, etc. - super fun! But, my absolute favorite thing is the location itself. The atmosphere is great as it's housed in a charming older building that has been remodeled with a really classy performance hall where their own recitals are conducted. (Since I am an adult, I have elected not to be in the recitals (phew!), but I have gone to a couple to watch the younger students perform, and they are so fun (especially the Holiday recital) and a great way for parents to gauge the progress of their kids!) There are lots of choices in our area for music, but this one gets my vote!

Meaning they have private lessons once a week which is replaced once a month by a group theory class. After a private lesson the kids spend some time on the computer to tune their ear to different beats and tones. To top it all off there is a very nice recital once per trimester to give them a chance to work on public performance. My daughter loves it all. However, my biggest issue with the way things are ran is the lack of parental involvement in the progress towards goals. There isn't anything in place that spells out the goals in the first place. I keep having to ask "where are we?" "What are we currently working on?" How is progress being measured? At this point I feel as though no one is directing my daughter's progress and I have to keep advocating for her which puts me in a very uncomfortable situation. I feel that an educational program should report progress to parents at regular intervals. I would like to see more transperancy as to what she is learning in the computer lab and in theory. I would like the instructor to communicate with me as to my daughter's strengths and weakness. I can not blindly trust in a program it must first earn my trust. So I will give this another trimester and if things don't change we will move on to a different program.

It had been about 5 years since I last played my clarinet and I decided I wanted to start up again…read more My instrument needed an overhaul repair, BADLY. After doing some research online, I found Granlund Woodwind Repair. The owner, Scott Granlund, had a lot of recommendations from professional musicians in Seattle, so I decided his business seemed reputable enough for me to give him a shot. The shop is a bit confusing to find. It's a single room workshop located behind Clever Bottle in Belltown, and I mean literally. You actually have to enter the bar and walk through a door in the back to get to the place. The shop itself, though cluttered wall to wall with instruments, parts, and tools, is charming. Scott immediately plopped my instrument on a table and appraised the work needing to be done. He wrote up an estimate, told me it would take about a month and a half to completed everything, and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. Now I ran into problems when it came to the estimated time of completion. Though Scott had told me 6 weeks, 6 weeks turned into 8, which turned into 10. I was getting a bit frantic, but after several sessions of phone tag and some tense emails, we arranged a time for pick up. Overall, I was pretty happy with the repairs. His quality and craftsmanship were very good and I could definitely feel the difference when I started to play. It's a shame it took so long to have everything done, however. I would have given him 5 stars if it wasn't for that fact.
