He can teach teach all types of music and really focuses on what you want to learn and how to get you going with something that will motivate you to learn. He's created his own teaching materials and walks you patiently through them even though I can tell he's done this a million times. This studio on Westlake right on the water of Lake Union is a short walk from Amazon in South Lake Union. It's a cozy space part of Mike Hillman's studio that has a doorbell rigged up to a guitar, rock posters and a waiting bench. Other students range from high level tech execs to kids and everything in between. There are those that dedicated fiends looking to shred and those of us taking a slower route given our career focus. Mike is patient with all types and can accommodate. He also does hilarious voices. It's tough to have the courage to learn new things when you suck at first but Mike makes it feel like it's not an issue.

He has the technical expertise that any student should require, but what sets Mike apart is his focus on the student and the student's goals. He takes the time to learn the student's objectives for seeking instruction, and tailors the lessons and exercises to get there -- rather than giving a stock set of instructions for every student, which I think is pretty typical (based on other guitar instructors I've had in the past). To me it's had a significant positive impact on enjoying practicing rather than feeling like it's work. He's also really versatile, and can accommodate a wide range of musical styles and student levels of expertise. Blues, rock, pop, folk, punk, country, metal, classical, whatever. Plus he pays attention and provides insightful tips and perspectives to accelerate your learning. Highly recommended!

I was searching for a guitar guy to re-fret my Ibanez JS1200. If you have a guitar that needs…read morework, this is the guy to use! His attention to detail is unmatched in this current business strategy. High communication during the re-fret process, with clear descriptions and many photos. I will trust all my guitars with Robert. I've been playing that guitar for a while now (JS1200 from 2006, autographed and drawn on by Joe Satriani; I asked him to draw something on the front of the headstock and autograph the back of the headstock; whom I met pre-show in Dallas) and I wore the frets out! I had the neck truss turned, the bridge raised, just to make it playable. I got it back from Robert and the neck was arrow straight, the bridge reset and the frets! The frets were smooth and the edges/ends were rounded and very easy to play. The fret work is amazing. They are such a great clean job that I find myself playing this JS1200 more than my other guitars, again! Like an old friend coming home. Robert also did above that which was asked, he oiled the scratchy pots and cleaned the board and body. The care taken to repackage it for shipping is something others need to learn from. He was aware that the sharpie wasn't the best for drawing on the headstock, and he took great care not to touch either the autograph or the drawing. This was a couple months ago, and I wanted to play the guitar for a while to get a feel for it. The cost was very fair. I will send my guitars to Robert every time!
