I came in to JCPenney searching for a specific plate set and to browse new runners. JCPenney's could use a lot of work with their staff. I shouldn't be able to hear a loud conversation of cashiers at the customer service desk talking about inappropriate topics with fowl language dropping many f-bombs in a short span. I looked over, made eye contact with these girls working and they continued on swearing. Mostly the store was clean as far as housewares go, I found my plates not otherwise listed in stock online. I've been coming to this JCP department store since I was a wee pup. It's changed a lot over the years but quality clothing, jewelry, and few home goods with frequent sales, remain. Their ground floor entrance is always convenient for downtown parking/walking/dining purposes. As well as their parking garage. I honestly thought we'd lose JCP before we lost Nordy's. We'll need to give this place more biz or it'll be another department store of yester-year. read more

This JCP is almost like a one-stop-shop. All they need is a food court and you could get all sorts of shopping done here. I mentioned to my wife on our way to the mall that I wanted to get my hair cut. She was like, "you can totally get it done at JCP." She was right! It was cheap and quick. 25 bucks for trim and shampoo. Bea cut my hair and she was amazing. Great conversation and totally got my hair where I wanted it to be. Lots of great sales. Two button up shirts were tagged at 15 but rang up as 7 and 8. Score! There was a little bit of disorganization and empty spots. Maybe they are in the middle of new sets coming out or something. It was just a little weird that some sections were totally empty. Staff was hard to find and not overly friendly. At one point there were four of them huddled up talking at a make up counter. read more

Angie is right, JC Penny's can be chaotic. But given the kinds of sales Penny's has, I can forgive them. Yesterday, I left the store with 7 or 8 new, gorgeous tops and 2 skirts for only 43 bucks. Great selection + low prices = a bit of disorganization. During sales, women desecend on Penny's like a hoard vultures during a feeding frenzy. Leggo that dress lady, cause I will cold-cock you. Holy cow, this JCPenny is a disaster. Some of the dressing rooms have more clothing hanging up than the actual racks. It doesn't help that they move something around every few months. Yes, you can get some great deals because there's always sales and coupons, but good luck actually finding what you're looking for. The poor employees at the registers deal with so much shit because apparently there's never anyone available on the floor and they're not able to leave their registers. When I was waiting in line with my mom, not one, but two different old ladies badgered the cashier because she was the only one in (their) sight. She had to call for backup so the Golden Girls could make it time in home for their 3:00pm dinner. She was doing her best but understandably overwhelmed. I used to work in the hell that is retail so I'm sure this is far from the worst the employees have to deal with. I guess this is why they can't keep enough employees to run efficiently. I only recommend shopping here if 1) You need something of decent quality that is much more expensive elsewhere (i.e. sneakers, dresses) or 2) You enjoy the thrill of bargain hunting and treating shopping like a scavenger hunt, in which case you've found your place. read more

I went to JCP this afternoon and had a bad experience with a pushy sales associate. She asked me four times if I wanted to open a JCP credit card and save 40 percent. Each time I told her no before asking to speak with her manager. Nobody likes to be heckled or harassed when shopping. The store is pushing credit card promotions too much. As much as I love their sale, I got to say the JCPenney at 5th Avenue mall had the worse customer service for their online return staff. I had to return some stuff on New Year day. This was the first time I had to use this facility to return anything. It was quite a shock to me. The two ladies who handled my transaction was so unprofessional and just plain rude. They acted like we bothered them when we needed to ask a question when they we just walking around chitchatting. Even when they were back to their stations, they were just there for a couple minutes and then walked out on us, the customers, while we were obviously waiting patiently in line to be helped. Not even an excuse or acknowledgement, they just simply walked away to carry on their private conversations and came back half an hour or so later to address the customers when they got it out of their systems. My guess was that because the online pickup/return station's located on the second floor and out of sight, the cashiers could do whatever they liked and not be scorned by the manager. The Home Store selection is pretty epic. In general, JCPenney's only sells one or two brands of something, but it's high quality and usually lower than msrp price. The selection of curtains, small kitchen appliances, Oneida flatware is very good. I wouldn't come here (normally) for jewelry or clothing, but you can find some cute things for very reasonable prices. Also, if you want brand name perfumes, makeup, and beauty products, go to the Sephora store inside JCPenney. read more

This review is for the photo studio...super unprofessional. The woman that was taking names was decent but the photographers are literally kids that have no direction nor have a professional bone in their body. The kid we had, once the session was done just waked out and clocked out. He didn't tell us anything until we asked and he said someone else will show our pictures to us since he was leaving. Then the kid that was showing us our pictures was in my mind rude. The wait time was extremely long even when we had an appointment. Our appointment was at 115 and are just now leaving and it's 3. I chose to take pictures here due to our first time taking them I was very pleased with the service we received. Not sure what happened to the photo studio in 2yrs. Next year, pictures will be done outside and no where near JCPenneys! read more

Been going to Penney's for years. Nice to see they have finally remodeled and updated. I don't care for the new layout, but it is nice to have the home store in the same building with everything else. I never went to the old home store when it was in the bottom of the parking garage because it was kinda scary. New layout has a giant Sephora store in the center of the main women's floor, and they've now spread the women's clothes out over the first 2 floors. I guess that helps get people to move more through the store, but personally I preferred the old layout where I could just run in and get pretty much everything I need on 1 floor. Mens is on the ground floor now and looks kind of warehouse-ish. The old mens dept was dated, but warmer and more welcoming. I'd say the same for most of the women's clothes as well. The racks are pretty crammed in, and its very messy. Sales associates are no where to be found and as I walked through all 3 floors I heard bells being rung at the checkout counters while people waited and waited for someone to cash them out. Obviously I'll go back. They have a nice selection of business clothes, and always seem to have dresses when I can't find them anywhere else. read more

I used to love this place, and actually recommended it to our city's visitors before. In the past, each penneys was unique to the city it was located in, especially ours. The chain actually sent the winter clothes up here for our store to sell in the summer, since visitors got colder than they thought they would. You could actually find great stuff here. Now it's a cookie cutter store, just like the other penney's in the lower 48. Most of the staff was rude before the change, hey but now as an added bonus, most of them are too dumb to know what their new store is selling. Don't bother looking for hoodies here, go to the tourist traps, or head to a Fred Meyers. That is your best bet. read more

I am really surprised at the low ratings this Penney's has. I think it is a really great store. I have been coming in there for years. Almost every time I go to Anchorage i stop at Penney's. They always have wonderful sales and you can always get a coupon. Usually for $10.00 off. With no sales tax on top of it, it is a win win situation. This store seems to carry the left overs from stores in the lower 48, similar to almost every other larger store in Anchorage. I really have a hard time even finding the basics in mens clothes. The do have a decent section dedicated to bedroom needs. If your in need for clothes to mess up, such as got work, cheek them out. The usually have up to 80% off sales for crap you usually wouldn't wear out. This is the least "appetizing" Penney's I think I have been to. read more

This review is only for the JCPenney Home Store at this location. Yesterday, when shopping for some glassware for my place, I stopped in to see what this JCPenney Home Store location had to offer. With a pretty good idea of what I wanted to buy -- some chunky, substantial glasses that won't break very easily -- I found a potentially suitable selection here at this store. Upon closer inspection, however, I was astonished at just how poorly manufactured these glasses appeared to be and I was shocked that JCPenney would even offer such glasses for sale to the public without identifying them as the seconds that they are. With air bubbles in the glass, with a few inclusions of unidentifiable objects in the glass, and with obvious striations and other undesirable curing problems in the glass, virtually all of these glasses were of very inferior quality. And, no, these imperfections were not intentional; the manufacturer had not produced a product intended to be rustic in appearance or something like that. Despite the obvious poor quality of these glasses, I tried to see if I could find a first-quality box mixed in amongst the rubble. After looking through the lot, I found no such box. I did, however, find two full boxes worth of glasses -- eight glasses in total -- that were broken or chipped (most of them badly so), with chunks of glass missing out of their bases or their rims. I am shocked that JCPenney would risk its good reputation as a retailer offering decent goods for the middle class by putting obvious junk like these glasses out on the sales floor. read more

My husband I went to JCPenny's furniture store on Arctic Blvd. We were looking for a sofa. We found a sectional and was told it was the last one they had and it was on sale. We bought it right on the spot. We were told that we had 30 days to pick it up since we opted for self pick u p instead of delivery. 4 days later my husband rented a uhaul and went down to pick it up. It was gone they had sold it to someone else. Not only did they not offer to let him look around for an alternative sectional they literally pushed him out the door. He had to put his foot in the door and demand our money back. They agreed and told us that the money would be credited back to our debit card immediately (which it was not it took a week) The following day I called them and told them that I would be writing a letter to The BBB. I got a phone call from the store manager that same day then apologizing and then offering for us to find an alternative to our sold sofa. Also we would have to pay the money we already paid again because it had been credited to our account. even though we did not have the money yet. So Issue it poor customer service. They were open until 7 and my husband was there at 5. We paid 60 bucks for a uhaul we didnt need. I had to be the one to call and only then did we get offered to pick another sofa. All of this seems typical of business's in Alaska they think they can treat there customers poorly because we are limited to our choices. We opted to by our furniture some where else. I did write the BBB and The JCP's corporate office. Also I am writing this review on every site I can find. I expect better from a big corporation. read more

Ladies, J.C. Penney is the best place (that I have found after extensive searching) to find a good selection of bras. Sorry about that guys, but I just have to say it. But don't ask for help here, because even if you do happen to find it, you won't get it. I prefer shopping on my own anyway, but since I am one of the millions of women who really have no clue what bra size to wear, I asked a woman working the counter if I could be measured. She was with a customer, and of course I would have waited. But the JCPenney associate told me that even though such a service such as measuring is available, she couldn't help me, because she was busy. Whatever has happened to "I'll be right with you." ?? Just as well. I went home and looked up online how to do it- got a measuring tape and voila! Now, I can actually continue to order my bras online. They are happy to take my money, and I won't have to bother anyone who "works" at JCPenney. read more

Anchorage, AK sadly does not have many department stores to choose from. Pennys used to be a good place to go to find most anything you needed at a decent price and good quality. I worked there 64-66 while going to school and as employees we were well trained to always be helpful and courteous. We dressed in black and had a name tag on so customers could see who to ask for help. Today good luck on finding anyone to help you or anyone who cares enough to help when asked. The quality of merchandise seems to continue going downhill and the entire store is disorganized. Sizes on labels are not true and items must be tried on. The big question of why do customers shop on line?? Answer is you have to "help" yourself anyway so why hassle the mess at the store only to get irritated. Some departments, like the shoe dept , are unstaffed and good luck finding what you want even if on display. Another issue is when placing an order you get to the "finish" only to be told, sorry this item cannot be shipped to Alaska! Is this the way brick and mortar stores operate else where? No wonder people shop on line or out of State while on a trip! read more

I want to start by saying that I have gotten my hair cuts there every time i am in Anchorage since 2012. I live in Juneau. I was there March 21 and made appointments for my mom, wife and myself. My wife got one hair color added but my mom wanted a dual color with foils. My haircut was great and worth every penny. My wife said her haircut was great. Customer service was good, the cuts looked great. My problem is that my mom asked for 2 colors which then places you into ala-carte services. That means her haircut cost closer to $300.00 vs. the $100.00 to $150.00 that I was expecting. When I asked a person in charge why JC Penny charged like this and why no one was told of the extreme costs (they could have told me when I made the appointments, could have told me when I reconfirmed my appointments the day before, could have told me, my mom or my wife when the cuts and color were happening), i was told that has been their policy for a while and it was my fault to assume pricing. My warning to you is to ask the pricing up front and to never ever use their ala-carte pricing. I loved this salon and my wife does too. I am unsure if I will use them again...it was disheartening that they chose not to help out a repeat customer from paying $300.00 for 1 haircut and a color. read more

Don't get me wrong, I love SHOPPING at JCPenny's, but hate a horrible time with their Photo department. I scheduled an appointment for a photo session online, for December 8th at 1:00 PM. We got there on time (my fiancé and 2 toddlers) and apparently there were 2 people ahead of us when we arrived. The place was packed, I understand, everyone wants Christmas photos, but what's the point of scheduling an appointment if it's not honored? Things started falling apart when my toddlers were getting restless after about 20-30 minutes and people who showed up after us were being seen before us, we asked for an update and they said there were 2 people ahead of us and said that they're a "little" behind after 45 minutes of waiting! My phone was almost dead, so I had to wait in the lobby to be called. The customer service was unprofessional, everything was so disorganized! After about an hour of waiting, I couldn't stand to wait another minute when my confirmed appointment was scheduled at 1:00, it was now 2:00. I just asked them to cancel my appointment and walked out. It was ridiculous. Would NOT recommend. read more
