I brought two small fans and one large. I got my two small fans yesterday, no problem at all. I came in tonight and Yanna (who I have always been cool and amicable with, for quite a while), acted like my last fan wasn't available and it was somehow stolen, though I had seen it hanging over the staircase the night before. It would simply be ok with me to get my property back. It's shameful that any of this turned out the way it did. I'm literally one of the quietest and nicest people that anyone ever deals with. I did not have any kind of negative interaction, but was treated as if I was being a nuisance and causing a problem. I am always kind and calm, I never have any issue with any server or bartender. It really disappoints me because I've always been a kind guest, and have always been treated well. But I think my time with Chairs is now done. It sucks, because all of my interactions with everyone leading to this moment has been really great. Jess, Cay, Ike, Nigel, Major, Kelly. Everyone until one stupid night with one stupid fan. I was not at all forceful, just inquisitive. I really feel like Yanna didn't have an answer for a very soft question and instead of looking into it, turned me into a villain, using Jess as a stopgap in order to avoid dealing with a very simple situation that could have just been dealt with by either giving my fan back, or the owner spending fifty bucks on a fan of the same caliber and writing it off as a business expense. Original: I've been a huge fan of My Parents' Basement for a long time. The food is incredible, the beer list is excellent, the pinball lineup is (usually) fantastic, and the whole vibe is such a great haven for nerdy folks like me. It's one of the few places where I've genuinely felt at home -- where I believed I could show up fully as myself. That's why this hurts so much to write. MPB proudly positions itself as an inclusive, safe space -- "All Are Welcome" is literally part of the mural on the wall. But recently, they installed a Harry Potter pinball machine, and as a trans person, this felt like a deep betrayal. The creator of that franchise continues to use the wealth and platform built by those products to actively harm trans people. Every sale, every license, every new machine feeds into that system. This isn't a theoretical harm -- this is material. It funds the people working to take away our rights and our safety. It's hard to describe the heartbreak of walking into what's supposed to be a safe space and seeing that machine. It sends a message, whether intentionally or not, that some of us don't matter as much when profit or popularity are on the line. I'm sharing this not to tear MPB down -- I love this place, and I want to believe in it. I want to believe that they care about the safety and dignity of all their patrons, not just in words but in action. I hope they'll reconsider this decision. I genuinely hope they'll listen. Until then, I can't keep coming back. And that breaks my heart.
