I love Java's. It's cozy and feels like an old school cafe where they want you to sit back, relax and stay a while. I feel that's not as common to find anymore! There's plenty of little nooks where you can sit, a nice community table where you're bound to chat with some interesting people. Baristas were friendly and fast! Only downside for me is there was no explanation of what the speciality drinks are. I felt like I was taking up too much time by asking. Man what a fantastic little place we just loved it! My wife found this place on accident on a walk and we had to visit. First impressions just loved the feel art deco with paintings and eclectic decorations everywhere. Absolutely love the vibe soft music playing plenty of sitting and work space. Great coffee pasteries and soup and sandwiches available. I tried the turkey and green with Chipotle sauce on the side my wife got the three cheese. And then the soup Omg! Their tomato basil soup was awesome so good and peppery I loved it had to finish every drop! Their lattee was fantastic as well! Loved the visit would absolutely be back. Worked a nearby festival and was in desperate need of a Java upload. Stopped in and was surprised at how cool the ambiance is, there's this inviting hipster caffeine fueled vibe. Ordering was fast and accurate even with a long line. I went with an iced caramel macchiato. It was a delicious cool refreshing much needed beverage. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but after living in the city for almost ten years, this was my first visit. It's located off East Avenue, near the Eastman School of Music. I chose this spot because it's open past 7 pm. The place has a very cool vibe with plenty of seating options, both inside and outside. The drink menu is extensive, and they even have huge Rice Krispy treats. I'd definitely recommend coming here, and I'll be back again. 4.5/5 Parking can be tricky. read more

Every coffeeshop I go to, I compare to this place, because it's just that good. And after two years of traveling through Northeastern USA and parts of Europe, I can confidently say no other place compares. The coffee is AMAZING, the espresso is just the right balance of sweet and bitter. I have not tried many of their non-espresso drinks but their Turmeric Golden Latte and Aztec Mocha are pretty good. Baristas are super sweet. THE SANDWHICHES. ARE SO GOOD. But they only have them 11-3 from Monday-Saturday and tend to run out! The spinach feta/leek parmesan croissant pastries are also excellent. As for the vibes, it's a bit chaotic, but in the best way. I love to come here and study as well as catch up with a friend. Not that many places where you can do both! I love the vibe in this place. Needless to say, coffee is great. Especially the Americano. My wife thinks their cappuccino is not up to the mark though. However, I am definitely disappointed with their croissants. We tried both, their chocolate and plain croissant on an early Saturday morning. They were definitely not fresh. Back in Orlando, FL I used to go to this little out of the way but stupid popular coffee shop that was a mixture of eclectic and just abandoned artefacts strewn across the place. Having moved to Rochester, I was kinda missing my Third Space. This is basically the same coffee shop but with better coffee. The pastries can be hit or miss. The cannoli I had was delicious. The cheesecake... tasted of fridge burn. Parking can be a little fun. It's either street parking or parking garage, which is a cost factor. Definitely targeted towards those living nearby or those at the school next door. Because of that it won't be one my daily hangout spot, but will definitely be visiting on a regular basis. read more

In some ways, I have to give Java's a 5. The food (artsy coffee and overpriced carbs) are tasty, the paintings are interesting, and the whole place has a sort of classic New York college coffee house vibe. You feel like Beat Poets are about to do a routine. Most of the time it's a nice place to be. What is not so nice is that Java's is inner city, and every time you go there, but especially late at night, you can expect to get hit on by panhandlers repeatedly, over and over. Some in clear need of mental health attention will come over and stand over you babbling away loudly and incoherently--at least till you give them a five. Sane or not, if you don't give them a five, not a few will get ugly, throw a fit, toss obscenities at you, and otherwise try to intimidate you to fork over cash. Staff do nothing to shoo them away, but the saving grace is that cops frequent Java's. At those times the panhandlers vanish, so if you see a parked cop car there, the place will be nothing but charming. If you're there with a date, and no parked cop cars are in evidence, prepare to have your experience seriously soured. read more

The WiFi is decently good (it cut out occasionally as it got busier later in the day), but I wish they had more outlets around the cafe. I got a hot tea as a drink and also ordered The Thing sandwich with a small chicken kale soup on the side. The tea was great for a cozy cafe work day, and they refilled the mug with hot water for me several times, so I got endless tea!! As for food, the staff is sweet and brings the food to you, which is nice! The sandwich was decent but nothing special, definitely something that can be whipped up at home. I enjoyed the soup a lot though, the chicken was delicate and I loved that there were lots of veggies in it! Java's is the OG Rochester cafe, and for good reason. A lot of popular local shops have taken their cues from this legendary East End spot. I was first introduced to Java's in high school when I was working as a barista at Leaf & Bean. The owner there worked closely with the owner of Java's to curate the menu, learn about the industry, and decide what would translate in the suburbs. As I started working downtown (specifically at the RPO right next door) I found myself here alllll the time. Whether it was grabbing a muffin and black coffee to go, sipping on a kinky reggae after dinner (guilty pleasure), or a cozy post-Eastman date night - Java's is simply the best. The atmosphere really brings Rochester together in a unique way. Students, professors, professionals, and everything in-between choose this watering hole to work and catch up. I almost forgot - if you haven't yet, you NEED to go to Java's at lunchtime for a sandwich. I don't know why they are so good, but they are. Sandwiches are ordered through the right side door as you look at the cafe on Gibbs. The soup is also next level and a great way to beat the winter months. Ordered the caramel cascata, doubled because I wanted something bigger than its usual serving size...Well, due to that request I was crafted a stellar cold drink that far surpassed my expectations. CHAOTIC GOOD. Came here at 12:30 pm on a Friday. Place was bustling with art students and musicians. Your senses will be overwhelmed with the smells, the tastes, and the visual art (including some taxidermied wild animals) that is covering literally every square inch of the walls. Prepare for an experience that is part art gallery, part music studio, part hang out spot, and part cafe. The energy here is best described as "chaotic good". The process of finding the "line" (more like a mob of people surrounding the coffee bar) and ordering a beverage was a bit chaotic, but the deliciousness of said beverage made it all worth it.
