one barista bitchin' on the phone about her money and the other.....well, just a bitchy barista. nothing new here. java lords is a typical coffee shop, only in little 5 (so it is dirtier than most). the owner clearly spared every expense in opening this place. the furniture looks like they bought it from an old elementary school that closed in the 80s. but then again it is little 5, expectations are low. in addition to coffee, they sell a nice selection of loose leaf teas and beer. not much else to say................ read more

meh. this place is ok ... it's in little 5 so lots of great creative types come in. the coffee is decent but THE ESPRESSO IS NOT BETTER THAN OCTANE ... I can declare because I'm at octane everyday for that very reason (the espresso is the best in town AT OCTANE besides CONDESA or DANCING GOATS. Nonetheless you'll be entertained by the people that hang out there. but if you're a coffee espresso connoisseur I'd recommend elsewhere ! the bartender was screaming about someone clogging up the toilet and freaking the F out because of it. this place may be the lord of something .. but java it is not. read more

I am sorry but this place is disorganized, filthy, serves mediocre fare and is consistently unable to provide quality service. I came here only as a convenience since it is directly across the street from where I live but I walked in today only to be told that I was banned because one of the baristas is incompetent at her simple job of accepting cash and preparing drinks in a timely fashion. About two months ago I had to wait over 10 minutes for a man to finish paying for his drink. The drink was in his hand and he was constantly quibbling with the barista making sure he got his money's worth. When she typed in 05 on the cash register he argued with her and asked her accusingly what the extra five meant. She explained to him he was about to receive a %5 discount and you would think that would appease him but he was very belligerent and when he handed her a $5 bill he demanded a lot more change back. I assumed he was trying to pull a scam on her and I wanted to sincerely help her but what ensued was a complete nightmare for me. I told him coldly that I noticed he had given her a $5 bill and not a $10 and I asked if he could please let me order my drink. The young girl allowed him to yell at me and call me nasty names one of them BITCH. I HAVE never before been harassed or verbally abused in any coffee shop by another customer in my life and I tapped him on the shoulders and said they lost a customer for the day. So the incompetent barista saw that as (acosting a customer) and since he is a regular I suppose they feel they should keep their customers happy and so she sided with him even though he was rather violent to me. This is a first for me. Since when are customers not treated equally? Are male customers allowed to be verbally abusive and threatening to the baristas and female customers? I will peacefully honor her wishes and find another coffee shop even though I have been here three times a week happily ordering drinks from other baristas during different hours. I have issues not returning here and writing my truthful review. Perhaps it is for the best for me to part ways and never recommend anyone here simply for the reason that they treat people so inconsistently and they truly don't care about the well being of anyone who wishes tor order a beverage and relax. For them it is only about the money and it shows in the lack of care with which they treat their customers and the lack of care they pour into their drinks. i've frequented this place a number of times over the years and have always enjoyed their coffees as well as the option of having it on ice and/or enjoying a dose of my favourite liquor according to my mood. unfortunately, Rob, the manager (?), has ruined my last couple of visits by exhibiting his total lack of respect for the consistently awesome employees and regular customers by being a total asshole to the former in view of all the latter concerned. what a dick. he should totally be fired so that we can all enjoy this fine establishment without having to deal with his violent mysogynist bullshit. sorry rob, but you are a jerk. please go away. read more

I know that this is the place to describe the taste of coffee or bartenders' service or ambience of the shop but I would like to leave those to other customers. After I got home last night, I noticed I left my purse somewhere in Little Five Points where my husband and I had dinner, did window shopping, and strolled. How careless, I know. I had everything (card, cell, SSC card, insurance card, Driver's license...) in there. We panicked, called a bank to cancel the card, and reported it to the police.... Knowing that it is a little naïve to expect such a lost item to be found by someone in the States( we are students from other country) , we called some places we could think of. We almost gave up as no place had it and the last place my husband called without much hope was Java Lords where we had a cup of coffee and a bottle of cold, dark beer. We were SO FORTUNATE that my purse was kept there untamperred!!! Unbelievable!! We got there immediately driving I-20 in the midnight. Rather small Java Lord with neon light really looked like a magical, little place in the fantasy movie to me. THANK YOU to the bartender who was working there last night and the customers who may have found it. You are amazing!! Love Java Lords and America !! read more

Java Lords is great for several reasons... First of all they have a great location right next to the Variety Playhouse in L5P. Another is the music and environment. A very underground feel swallows this place right up and you along with it. What a great vibe. The coffee is pretty good and the baristi there know how too pull a really got shot. The beans are Intelligencia and I am usually not a fan. But these guys know how to brew it right. Also check out their loose leaf teas. Another great taste. Don't miss out on these guys. If you are a sucker for city life, this coffee shop equals WIN. They don't receive five stars simply for the beans used. But the coffee, once extracted, is great. read more

I've been coming here sporadically for a few years, and I really like it. You will fit in if you bring a Guitar, a laptop, or a book. There is an inside seating section, and two outside seating sections, and they all tend to attract different sorts of people from many walks of life. Since when did fun neighborhood joints get judgy? Apparently since wannabe Hipsters and faux edgy folk started over running the pinnacle of "too cool for you" coffee houses. My sis and I dodged in for a beer today and were smugly acknowledged by a skinny girl with overworked shaggy blonde hair and enough attitude to clear a room. My sister asked for a corsendonk, a beer they served and one time. The girl responded as if my sister had asked for brain shaped jello. Apparently they no longer served the beer and the awkward pause evolved into what surely could have become an all encompassing black hole. I interjected to ask if we could order off the current beer menu and the jettisoning atmosphere was rebalanced for a moment. Unfortunately when I asked her what the juju Ginger beer was, she replied "it's beer brewed in Ginger". Thanks captain obvious, what a glowing recommendation. I simply had to ingest it based on this ever so enticing description. Her nagging attention to what must have been regulars made it clear that my sister and I clearly did not belong in this place. A fancy notion indeed considering we had been here many times before she ever worked there, back in the days of Corsendonk dammit! While we drank our beers two more regulars came in and remarked to the oh so edgy barista that it smelled funny. She remarked that is was probably my sister and I in a less than hushed tone. I suspect it may have been her attitude musking as a defensive mechanism to the intruders (us). Apparently the insecure posers that parade as youth lost in their prime these days must be constantly reassured of their cut and pasted self identities by surrounding themselves with people trying to wear the same image. My sister and I really messed with the mirror these people rely on to properly see themselves. My advice, if you're uninterested in people trying way too hard to not give a shit, or just feel that welcome vibes and good customer service are must haves, then don't hit up this place. Try the porter down the street instead. They don't seem to discriminate based on tattoo count or glasses frame styles there. read more
