I came in here for a midafternoon cup of tea and a spot to read for a while and found myself in what looked at first like an awkward space but in fact turned out to be an exceptionally pleasant environment. Despite this being billed as a coffee place, there's a decent selection of tea and the staff are knowledgable about it. The seating area is well set up, with bar seats for the more extroverted and tables and a few booths for the introverts or small-group socializers. They are attached to the theatre where Dad's Garage is temporarily performing and they complement each other perfectly. If I could give this place no stars, I would. I used to come here during college and I've never experienced the terrible customer service that I experienced today. I came in with my friend and started typing away. The man behind the bar makes his way over to us (the only two black girls here) and tells us that if we'd like to sit here, take up space and use their internet, we'd have to buy something. The problem with that is he had no clue that we were planning on getting coffee once settled in. His tone was extremely hostile and even worse when he came over again demanding that we buy something. Inconsistently odd. The lattes and coffee were delicious, served in a plain white cup. The place is tacky, hipster, and the epitome of what Little Five Points is all about. There were 4-5 hipster guys in leather jackets hanging out at the bar, with a mix of black coffee's and 16 oz PBR's. The music started out with some lovely indie jams, but as the barista changed the pace it made its way to diverse sounds from dubstep to Kermit the Frog. I couldn't keep the groove. The artwork there is eclectic, with a series of four paintings reflective of lesbian women going down on each other, a woman peeing on the street under the moon, an attacking penis,and a woman bleeding while walking. I couldn't bare to look at these, along with the yellow sign that read, "adultery". Everything was bearable beyond the artwork, and it was a great place for cheap beer, decent espresso, and some of the most unique conversations imaginable. I'll return. read more

The coffee is always strong and the inside is always chill and relaxing. I don't know how comfortable the chairs are for sitting for long periods of time, but I noticed some people "parked" at a table for quite some time! It was super quiet (other than the ambient music) which I think is great for reading. And there is a cute outdoor area. read more

This is a great little place that you can easily miss if driving or walking too fast down Euclid. I came here for Yelp office hours having no idea what or where it was. I do not drink coffee so I was planning just to get a hot chocolate or something. I had no idea they had alcohol! The beer specials here are amazing. $1 for some drinks, even good beers for $3. The sweet barista made one of the best mochas I've ever had and made some pretty latte (mocha?) art in the foam before she covered it in whipped cream. Then she overcharged me by a dollar, and I didn't realize it till I had left. Entirely unsatisfactory first AND last experience going to Java Lords. Yesterday a friend invited me there to celebrate her birthday. I treated to two $7.00 Irish coffees and left a $5 tip. We were sitting in the outdoor area and I had my dog with me. About 20 minutes after making my purchase, I went back inside to ask for some water for my dog. An incredibly unpleasant woman behind the counter responded with "We don't allow dogs." I explained that we were sitting outside and just wanted a small cup of water. Again, she told me that they don't allow dogs, and that if I want water for my dog, I should go next door to Ali Baba and ask for some. Fortunately, the woman at Ali Baba, where I had purchased nothing, was very friendly and immediately brought out water for my dog. I call on the java lords to prevent other unknowing people from ever entering Java Lords. read more

There's a lot to be said for a cozy, bohemian coffee shop two feet from Atlanta's best music venue. And no, not all of it was said in that last sentence. In truth, I'd be hard pressed to find anything about Java Lords that I don't like. The coffee is Batdorf & Bronson which means it's always fresh--definitely nothing to complain about. In a town where the word "barista" is often synonymous with "trendy, overpaid, aloof prick," this place is a refreshing change. Java Lords defies the 'holier-than-thou' stereotype by employing a friendly, open group of twenty-somethings who really know their shit. I've never had a bad drink from here, and I've never had a good drink made by a barista who made me want to throw down my bags and fight. The location is perfect too. As I mentioned before, it's literally seconds from the Variety Playhouse, and right in the heart of it all. The caf itself is pretty sweet too. Cozy and dark, it's an ideal place to write the next Great American Novel (or study-if you must). The music is usually pretty great, and the place is a ghost town unless there's some event going down, so the lack of seating is not much of a problem. All pros, no cons, but they'll earn their fifth star when I get an endorsement deal. read more

Came here to meet up with some friends. I always pass by and finally was excited to stop in and check it out. Utter disappointment....It was really dirty. The bathrooms were disgusting and the service was terrible. The bartender, I believe he was, was exceptionally rude to my friends, so much so, that all 8 of us just decided to leave. I didn't enjoy my experience here at all and I love coffeeshops! If you're looking for a bar, then this place is serviceable at most. While strolling through the Five Points area we stopped in to Java Lords and it was completely empty and pretty dark. I guess i was expecting it to be more like Octane, so i wasn't sure if I should shell out the money for a latte so i went for just a coffee. While drinking the coffee outside we noticed all the patrons coming for takeout, no one was enjoying their coffee in house. Iced coffee seemed to be the drink of choice. Next time i am in the order i am gna try their iced coffee. Overall Java lords is a place that i would come for a coffee but i am not sure if they do latte art here. read more

I went around 10pm on a weekday because I was looking for a late night coffee shop where I could get some work done outside of my home office. It was good but not quite what I was expecting, which was more of a contemporary coffee shop with a cool crowd, mellow tunes in the background, and good coffee. This place is a hybrid of bar and coffee shop. It is non-committal in either direction. It appears to specialize more on the bar side as they have a full bar but their pretty decent-sized list of beers and ales were in the bottle, not on tap. At the same time, if you aren't sitting at the bar they had a few booths (with outlets) like a coffee shop where someone like me could come and spread out their papers and electronics and get all plug & playalistic! I would define it as a coffee-shop with alcohol by day and a bar with coffee by night. As far the coffee, the coffee was pretty good and they even had a big list of flavor shots that could be added to your beverage for an additional cost. There were a few baked goods (pre-wrapped, possibly supplied by another local business). I had an oatmeal cookie that was okay. The noise level was medium with moderate-level conversation going on in the place. There is metal and hard rock playing in the background a little louder than "lounge" level but not so loud that you find yourself yelling and leaning in close to hear your neighbor. I came on a night where a few loud people were being a little obnoxious and apparently continuing the party from wherever it had started but the baristender (barista/bartender) did apologize after the loud crowd left. All in all, I had good coffee, found a bottled spiced amber ale that I'd try again, and got some work done, so I can't complain. I'd go back again if I needed to get away late night to get some work done in a spot that gives you the option of Cuervo or coffee. read more

On my first time at Java Lords I ran into someone I went to middle school in Maryland with, met an editor from Paste Magazine, and shared the room with burlesque dancers from the show going on next door. The place is open until late, has free wifi, outdoor seating, and doubles as a coffee house and bar. And while I appreciated all of these features, it was the definitely atmosphere that made my time at Java Lords memorable. I have a feeling there's never a dull night at this place so if you're looking for a quiet place to do work, this may not be it. But if you want to people watch and enjoy yourself, Java Lords is the best coffee shop/bar in Little Five Points. read more

I absolutely love the coffee here. A few of the servers are a bit weird and unhappy but its overshadowed by the sweet servers there. Don't expect to get fast Starbucks service. This is my favorite coffee shop! The staff is amazing and have great personalities. My favorite part about Java Lords is that they don't take sh*t from overprivileged teenagers that come in 20 minutes before closing and demand something that is not available at that time of night. No adult out at 11:30pm wants to be around poorly mannered teenagers with a sense of entitlement anyway. What customers out late night want is for those teenagers to get the f*ck out so the rest of us (that actually tip for a service) can enjoy this establishment without snotty brats.
