I can't believe this place has so many good reviews. I really can't believe it. I went on a Friday night at midnight after seeing a movie with friends. They ordered rice paper shrimp rolls and I ordered curry chicken. Eventually their shrimp rolls arrived and I sat waiting for my chicken. Their shrimp rolls looked delicious and I was tired, hungry and cold as I waited for my chicken. The server came by and asked us how everything was. He didn't even notice I didn't have my food. I told him I was still waiting for my chicken. He said he would go check on it for me. Turns out he forgot to order it. So I waited some more. After some more waiting, my house salad arrived. This is when I really realized the fate of my meal. I wish I took a picture of it so I could share how pathetic it was. It was a few leaves with.... hot sauce on them?? It was some red sauce. I thought... there's no way I just got handed a salad with hot sauce on it. It must be some special dressing. I tried a piece of it, and it tasted like leaves with hot sauce on them. Because that's what they were. Now that's I've seen other yelp reviewer's pictures of the sad salad, I wonder why they even bother. I pushed it aside and waited some more for my chicken curry. It finally arrived. It looked like leftovers a frat boy would attempt to feed me for breakfast. There was a bowl of chicken curry sitting on a large plate with some scattered rice on it. I'm being generous when I call it a bowl of chicken curry. There were three tiny pieces of chicken strewn on large cut up potato. Potato curry, that's something I've never seen before. Probably because it's fucking idiotic. I dumped my curry on the rice and mixed it together. It tasted like rice and potatoes, two foods that are hard to fuck up. Thanks Java House for my potatoes and rice. My low carb diet really suffered that night. Have you ever taken $10 and put it in a paper shredder? That's what my night felt like. read more

I would like to give this 2.5 stars but I guess 3 will do. Went there for breakfast this morning with an old friend to catch up. The breakfast menu was fairly simplistic and definitely cheap. I had the stuffed french toast with home fries. Delicious, a bit on the cool side but still yummy. The dressing used on the salad left something to be desired. I thought it was French at first but it was lumpy? Didn't end up finishing it. The bathrooms didn't seem as bad as other reviews have previously mentioned but maybe they were clean still cause it was earlier in the day. Coffee left something to be desired and the sugar container on our table ended up spraying sugar all over the place and the wait staff didn't even seem to care (even after seeing it was a bit of an issue.) A bit of a gripe for me was the fact that they wouldn't let us do separate bills and only accept cash although there was a Visa/Mastercard sign on the door. ?!?! read more

Stopped here for a bit while bar hopping Queen W. and this was easily one of my favourites. Rating would be higher but they only accept cash and cannot separate bills. Drinks are great, food is great and I can't stress enough the PRICES ARE AWESOME. $5.25 for a double rum & coke and $6 something for nachos? How can you beat that downtown? The vibe is good, laid-back with no dress code. However it's SUPER HIPSTER, if you're not wearing plaid and/or spacers (as I do not) you may not fit in. The servers are always friendly but distracted/busy. read more

You get what you pay for. Cheap booze and cheap food. Pretty much all of the food is made with the same ingredients (veggies/sauce/protein) so everything tastes very similar. Service is subpar, sometime you'll wonder if they forgot about you.You have to walk through the kitchen to get to the washroom.... need I say more? The good thing about this place is the cheap pitchers of beer and sangria, two can dine and drink for under $25. read more

Came here on a impromptu date to get a quick drink. I found their pricing to be reasonable and the food looked good, even though I didn't have any. I will have try there food next time I am in the area. As for the staff they were friendly and constantly checked up on us to see how we are doing. read more

Loved it since the first day I went there. I live in the west end and yet this is the place for drinks! Cheap, dark and fits any size groups. The servers are awesome and energetic and not catatonic like other places. Why 4 and not 5? 'Cause out of the food I can only trust the sandwiches :) the rest of dishes taste exactly the same like fishy fried chicken:). read more

This place is a gem! I love the cool and casual atmosphere coupled with an affordable menu and tasty dishes! One of my go-to places to grab a bite with friends. read more

Tried the veggie wrap and hot cocoa, nothing spectacular!!! Patio is nice, but the restaurant inside looks like it's falling apart.... read more

One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Food was terrible, tables were broken, menus were sticky and stained, and the customer service was non existent. I was greeted with attitude, and even the owner seemed to have little interest in providing his customers with even a mediocre experience. Be cautious because the waiters are very hostile, and the you get what you pay for. read more

What can I say? This place is pretty much a hole in a wall. Chairs look like they'll fall apart any moment. But I can never turn down all-day breakfast for $5. It was surprisingly delicious. I'll be back! read more

Great deals on entrees and pitchers. The portions are good, the food is just okay but worth the money. Friday special was 2 entrees and a premium pitcher for around $25. Had Shanghai noodles, shrimp linguine, and Mill St. Cobblestone stout, a great beer. Will probably go back for a quick snack/drink on the patio on a warmer day. read more

The first time i went there and i completely loved it. For some people it might not be the bar restaurant to chill, but try to be open mind and enjoy. The wings and beer cannot go wrong on that, they also have specials everyday so anyone can just walk in and enjoy daily's meals. The rest of the food is great. I always go there and always leave satisfied!!! read more

Decent cheap food. Super rude service, just like Lindsay L. experienced. Interesting cheap menu, basic pub grub with a ton of Thai inspired dishes. Wouldn't bother coming back ever unless I was in desperate need of cheap eats & all grocery stores were closed. read more

I've been here a couple times and I've always had a good time here. It's a very chill place and the food is somewhat basic but I don't mind because it's so cheap! The servers are nice and very laid back, and really you can stay for as long as you want without getting hassled to leave. ANOTHER big plus is that it's open late which is good for me because I always mysteriously get hungry at midnight. but a minus is the washroom.. I'm too scared to go there, I haven't been but it seems like it wouldn't be too nice... Regardless, I can't wait to come back during the summer and hang out on the patio! read more

Alright.... Putting a star rating for this place was tough! On the one hand, I knew to have low expectations. On the other, I still have to tip 15% so what was with the service? So after checking out the Christmas market I decided to bring my cheap date and I to this place so we could be cheap together. Well the interior fit my expectations. Mmmm grungy. But I understand people are into that, and really, who cares? It's about the affordable booze! And yes, this place hits the mark with booze. Food... Well that's meh. But who comes to a cheap place for food? My real issue with this place is the bloody service. Ah... Thank you for thrusting the menus into my hands and randomly motioning me to a general direction. Oh and thanks for giving my date a pair of utensils and me none. Surly attitude? Hot! And that random waitress crying? Definitely set the mood. There was one guy who seemed to be actually trying. But trying in such a way that it was evident that his ambitions had already been crushed by his coworkers uncaring attitudes. So really, if you have low expectations and want to get drunk on the cheap, this is the place to be. If service or food is important to you, this isn't the place for you. read more

I must start this review by saying that my 4 stars would be 5 if this place wasn't a cash only establishment. As an individual who RARELY carries cash I found that to be somewhat irksome. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the food, services and prices at Java House. They have delicious all-day breakfast (and, I'm told, pretty delicious Thai food as well)! I had the French Toast when I was there. It came (very quickly, might I add) with home fries and fresh fruit. Everything was very tasty and well prepared! The other great thing about Java House is that drinks are CHEAP. I got a gin and tonic for something ridiculous like $3.50!! The waitstaff was cheerful and helpful. When we first arrived, I was not a fan of the table we were seated at (it was wedged in between two very noisy tables). When I made my grievance known to the server, he was very accommodating and immediately moved us to a quieter table. This is a great place if you're looking for good reasonably priced food and drinks. read more

Oh Java House. How I keep coming back to thee. Somehow I've shaken my soft spot for their sister restaurants, but Java House will not be shaken. It's the one place that I go to recreate my university days, since it's a heck of a lot more appealing then throwing garbage all over my apartment and waiting for some roaches to arrive. We do a lot of Saturdays on Queen West, and while there are a lot of options (some of them really great options) none of them can match Java House in terms of a) the caliber of patio and b) the cheapness of drinks. 90% of the time they have a special that includes two entrees and a pitcher of beer/sangria for $26. $26!!!!!!! Isn't that cuh-razy? My choice items are the red sangria and the perogies. Be warned, though, when a bar offers sangria at the same price as their domestic beer, you're not getting good sangria. But, hey, if you're looking for cheap drinks on a patio on Queen West, Java House is the place. read more

Went here with a couple friends to grab a bite to eat for lunch. After perusing the menu, I decided to go with the chicken wrap. The wrap itself was basically a big taco and was filled with chicken and veggies and quite a bit of garlic. I love garlic, so I didn't mind it, but it was pretty heavy. The dish as a whole was pretty fresh and served with another side of veggies which were decent enough. Overall, sitting on the patio was a great way to enjoy a beautiful day and the service was attentive enough. The food was good, but nothing to write home about. read more

My first impressions of this place is bad. I came with my sister and her dog on a Sunday afternoon. I saw the sign to go inside first to be seated, so I go inside while my sister waits outside with her dog. I was right beside the wait to be seated sign and a server came, ignored me and told the person behind me that he'll be right with her. I just thought that maybe he thought I was with her or something. Seconds later, a different server came and helped me. I told him seating for 2 and that I have a dog with me. He quickly checked the patio and saw that no seats were free and the wait would be about 20 Mins so I told him I need to ask my sister first. As soon as I went outside, I saw a table cleared up so I went back inside and told the server and he immediately seated us. But he forgot to bring our menus so after about 5 Mins of waiting, I asked the server that initially ignored me if we can have water and menus. He said "did you guys just seat yourselves?" and I told him no, someone else seated us. I thought that was rude and uncalled for. And the exchange has made it extremely hard for me to enjoy my food and beer. The food and beer is pretty good for its extremely affordable prices but the server's attitude is enough for me to never come back to this place. read more

I get sort of romantic about places like this, and it's difficult not to. The graffiti wall, the throwback interior you know they aren't faking, the fact that it's called a coffee shop but really it's a beer cafe, the old patio chairs just one step from breaking, but perfect for relaxing on which is what the entire design of the place screams at you as you walk past it, then back to check it out. The food. People usually love hole in the wall type business's for a particular reason: cheap beer or food, chill vibe, iconic neighborhood status. I think you could apply all those to Java. But for me and my friends this day, it was the cheap food that drew us in. I had the chicken Pad Thai, my friend had the Shanghai Noodle and my other friend had some other Asian noodle dish. All were pretty good. And all were $8.50. The price was great as Pad Thai is typically about $12 minimum. The flavor was decent. Didn't have crushed peanuts which I like, and the tamarind was a bit too ketchupy (I've mentioned this about other Pad Thai), but I was starving and for my dollar, it was just what the doctor ordered. Came with a tiny salad which was actually very good. Homemade dressing (by my estimation) was a nice touch. Staff were friendly enough, and were attentive. Suits the atmosphere of casual dining. ATM is located at back. Good, cheap eats. Worth stopping in read more

This place is great! My boyfriend and I love the deals- a pitcher and two entrees for around $25.00- or something like that..and the breakfasts are simple, inexpensive and savory. read more

Man oh man. It's easy to forgive a place like this because it is 'cheap' but I wouldn't waste my money on ordering any food from there unless it is breakfast or drinks. I have been there for breakfast, lunch, and nighttime drinks and I didn't touch my lunch because it was just straight up gross. I got the veggie stir fry with chicken and it was just drenched in goopy sauce. The veggies weren't even cooked and it was all dumped on two pieces of sopping wet lettuce. The simple eggs for breakfast is good though as it's cheap and it's hard to mess up eggs. read more

Cheap Cheap Cheap CHEAP Beer. The Place is a bit of a dive -- but I like that. It gives it some character. I love that you have to go through the kitchen to get to the dodgy bathrooms. Food is okay, very cheap. The Thai food is what to get -- if you order anything that's not Thai based the kitchen doesn't really know how to make it very well. Overall -- I like this place and I go here strictly for the prices. read more

For the prices they charge, the food, drinks and the service is great. Chairs and tables could use some replacement as they are kinda broken and starting to look kinda soiled with all the years of use, but hey, you get what you pay for. read more

Had the pita and hummus app. It was amazing. Very affordable and everyone was super friendly. Would 100% go back.

Really cool place to hang out that just accepts cash. FOOD is on the über cheap side of things and there was a distinct lack of flavour to my French toast - even when doused in the equally flavourless Maple Syrup. The BEER was just as cheap and to go with the café's vibe it was a welcome break on a hot afternoon. read more

I've come here so many times over the years. I love my experience each and every time. What makes this place great is also what many may dislike about it. It is a cheap place for cheap food and drinks. It knows what it is and it delivers. It has a great patio and the service has always been good. To me that is all I could ask for. I almost always get the special as there is a new one everyday. The pitches are super cheap and they have a great selection. I also almost always have their sangria. I love to order the asian dishes, like pad thai. To me this will always be one of my favourite spots in Toronto. In the end, you can't go wrong with cheap food and drinks with a nice patio and good service. I highly recommend this place to anyone. I give it two thumbs up :) read more

Couldn't believe how good the food was for the price- I'm talking meal and two glasses of wine for $18. Great spot for us college students when you need food late at night. Waiter seemed a little rude but could've been the time of night we were there. I had the avocado and brie sandwich, friends had shrimp pad thai, and the grilled cheese. read more

Pretty good place for cheap, tasty, no-frills food. We came for a late breakfast in the spring and sat on the outdoor patio. It was a little unmemorable, but it hit the spot, our server was helpful and friendly, and it was reasonably priced. It has a slightly divey feel. I wouldn't go out of my way to seek this place out (at least not for breakfast) but if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick meal it does the trick. read more

I love this place because you always know what to expect. They are who they are and its great...no fluff no razzle dazzle just good cheap food with servers who do their job well but are not over the top or in your face. By far the cheapest food in the city and LOTS of great items on the menu. The patio is great as it is right on Queen street and there is a lot of street action to see. Drinks are super cheap and good. To get to the bathrooms you have to walk trough the kitchen which is cool. You can see what they chefs are preparing each time you need a pee. Cash only, but once you know that its fine. The cash only policy helps keep prices low. One of my most visited places in the city. 4 stars instead of 5 because some food items can be bland (the veggie wrap for example) read more

Randomly stumbled upon this place while out shopping. One of the girls at Urban Outfitters told us about it, said it was cheap and good and she was right! We had two meals, two beers and an appetizer each, and the bill was $35 total. Awesome! The only reason I am giving it three stars instead of four is that the service is pretty awful. Our waitress ignored us, forgot our drinks and was pretty much just rude. We sat and stared at our empty plates for quite a while as well. I got the vibe that she really just didn't care. Oh well! Good, cheap meal overall. read more

Real rating more like 3.5, watch positive. Great value for the prices you pay. Service is rapid and polite. Unfortunately, the bathroom are too old, the establishment accepts cash only and does not split the bill. Lot of seats, large choice of food and drinks, including all day breakfasts. Patio is large in the summer time. With a few renovations, Java House can be in the top list of the pubs in the Queen West side of the city. read more

A cousin of mine suggested this place for a quick bite to eat and although I am a picky eater I gave it a shot. It really wasn't as bad as I thought! Food is cheap, and actually tastes good. The look of the place is kind of hipster looking but clean and organized. The people here are nice though. The only thing that sucked was that I came with just debit and they only accepted cash. Other than that I would definitely come back for a nice cheap meal! read more

Good patio, flavor was on par. Price is pretty reasonable especially their daily deals and combos. Ordered the pork marinated sandwich combo with fries. The marinate on the pork was quite good but a bit oily. The service could be drastically improved. We were never offered if we need a refill (just my preference). This place only takes cash so be prepared. A friend had to wait 30 mins for her food with us having to prompt a different waitress after 20 mins of waiting. Overall experience is good if your in a group of friends. Would not recommend for a first date spot maybe a second. But definitely a place worth checking out. read more

Being a regular patron to this establishment I've been conditioned by its atmosphere, It takes a littler getting use to , most customers are young hipster artsy types, and occasionally some professionals. This is place is like a fine wine, gotta build your tolerance. I for one love this place. cheap drinks and eats, (Pad thai is amazing). Service is great , though I've had my fair share of bad run ins with management, my last visit there was amazing. ordered Sangria , they brang me extra cherries in a plate, and food came within 20 minutes of ordering. For those who like chill spots in T.O, with cool hipster artsy vibe, definitely recommend this place. Cant go wrong with a $14 dollar pitcher. I usually bring first dates here, if it does not work out, no worries, at least the bill was under $30. :p read more

Had beer here. It was pretty cheap. Amsterdam Blonde on tap makes me happy. The servers were pretty rude, but we didn't really care. To be fair, we were in a large obnoxious group, so I can see why they were annoyed. Kind of a cozy place. Nothing fancy at all, but good for a drink and to hang out with friends. Nice little patio as well. Again, nothing special, but good for a quick drink and hang out. read more

I can't get over how inexpensive this place is! It's a great place to have a couple coffees, a quick bite, or a beer on their patio in the summer. For $3 the hummus and pita is absolutely delicious. $6 for a big chicken wrap and hearty bowl of soup. The place has a really artsy feel to is with material for wall paper, hipster servers, and a chilled out atmosphere. It's quite informal (don't expect professional service), but it kind of adds to the charm. I am a big fan of this place. Do yourself a favour, check this place out. read more

i love this place (during the summer) because ... - one . it has one of my fav lunch patios . - two . brie & avocado sandwich . YUM ! i never got around to try anything else cuz this is all i want to order . every single time . perfect summer sandwich . i love how fluffy & toasty the bread is too . - three . not too nice, not too rude servers . i dont feel overwhelmed nor ignored . i feel so comfortable, just chilling for hours without worrying about what they think of it . - four . super duper cheap . - five . exterior . i guess this can both be a pro or a con depending how you look at it, but after the first time, i feel comfortable w the graffiti & the other exteriors . it makes the place seem a little ... cozy but in a different way than usual . it gets a star off though because .. one . i just dont feel the same way about it during the colder months for some reason . i think it has something to do w the patioo .. two . washroom . bleh !!!!!! read more

I'm glad that I visited this place without reading any of the reviews for it first. I walk past it quite often, and since it looks like such a dive, was always curious as to why the patio is always quite busy. Oh a whim, me and a couple of other people decided to pop in on a Wednesday night to see what was drawing in the crowds. Turns out it is the veerrrry low food and booze prices. Was the food perfect? No. But was it bad? Definitely no. It was pretty good food that was made better by its super low prices and cheap accompanying beer. We ordered some nachos to share, I got the BLT sandwich and my companions got chicken and vegetable Pad Thai. We all enjoyed our food well enough, even if it didn't blow our minds. One of the aspects that I was very impressed with was the warmth of the service (which seems at odds with a lot of the other reviews for this place and which is why I'm glad I didn't visit Yelp beforehand). Our two waitresses were friendly and patient and the manager/owner made a point of visiting our table twice to see if everything was okay. I can't speak to others' experiences with service, but ours was very good. I'll definitely pop in again if I'm in the area. read more
