Starbucks who?! We came up here for a little trip and the only bad thing I can say is that they arent in Southern California! I got a tuxedo latte and my hubby got a regular latte. Soooo good, and piping hot! There is nothing worse than getting coffee expecting it to be hot and it is luke warm. I am super confused by all the other reviews that said the staff was rude. There were three people working when we stopped and they were all very friendly and patient. I usually dont try new things so when I was asking (what I thought to be dumb) questions the guy never made me like a dummy or like I was wasting his time! He was nice and explained everything to me that I asked about. All of the baked treats looked delicious, but I didnt try any...definitely next time! I usually love this place and the employees. i was given a stamp card a few months back and needed one more stamp to get a free drink. i asked the woman at the window if I bought my last drink on the stamp card, if I could have my free one and she said they aren't allowed to do that. I used to go every morning before work last 3 time I was waited on by Morgan and her attitude was all wrong. I would order and she acted like I was bothering her. My bagel wasn't warm and had hardly any cream cheese. So the last time I went I asked for enough cream cheese to be seen and to toast my bagel twice. i looked at it and there was less cream cheese than a serving . So I asked if I would could a little more. She got upset. And with attitude she told me I'm gonna have to pay more next time because it's not cheap. Turned around and raised her hand . Mind you, I told the girl that took my order how much I wanted on my bagel. I've tried calling to complain but couldn't get thru. My schedule changed so I couldn't go back by. I went there for the first time today and wasn't really sure how ordering and the drive through worked but the person who helped me figure it out was extremely sweet and patient through the whole process. She helped me figure out what kind of drink I wanted since I was craving peppermint and chocolate. She made me a peppermint mocha blended drink with whip cream and it was so good that i drank it before I could even take a picture of it. I tried it immediately when she gave it to me and told her it was good and she asked if I wanted a punch card. I said yes because I'm definitely going to go back and it's my new favorite coffee place in Chico since I haven't really been to many since moving here. Ok after finally going to every coffee drive through in Chico I am declaring a very clear winner. Java Detour. Their coffee tastes the best. They have breakfast sandwiches and other useable morning foods. They can make all of their sugary drinks sugar free. The staff is genuinely friendly not fake trained exaggerated friendliness. They wear clothes. They have an easy drive through on an intersection. The prices are ok. I have been going there a lot and will make the detour and pass 3 or 4 other ones on the way to work just to go there. It is worth it. read more

Absolutely baffling to me why they are handling food and beverages and not wearing a mask!!! UNBELIEVABLE. I noticed the girl ran out the back door and asked me for my order without a mask on. It got me curious so when I pulled up to the I noticed the cashier not wearing a mask either was offended. I have had Covid 19 already but it still bothers me when i pull up to get a coffee and the staff is not wearing masks. I asked the young woman about masks and she said they are not required by their boss. When she handed me my coffee, she asked about me having Covid. I told her I was really sick and if I hadn't already had it, I would have driven away upon seeing no masks on their part. She rolled her eyes and repeated that their boss does not require it. I replied she could do the right thing without her boss's requirement. And that's why the numbers are going up. She said "To each their own" and I said again, "That's why the numbers are going up". I went to this place a few times on my way to work in the morning. The breakfast sandwiches are better here than at starbucks, but I enjoy the starbucks chai more. I also think the chai was cheaper here, but the sandwhiches were a little more expensive (if I remember correctly, it's been a couple months...) I don't really drink coffee so this isn't a fair review since this is a coffee place and I've never ordered a coffee. lol. But they're pretty quick and the girls have always been nice. Java detour is the only coffee shop In Chico I could recommend. I've experienced nothing but eye rolls and smart alec remarks from every other coffee shop.. just because I like my coffee prepared a certain way. All the other local shops.. like Dutch Brothers have been an absolute nightmare. I've experienced bagels thrown at me, used tea bags in my drinks, and hot coffee "accidentally" splashed on my good shoes. I have recently been frequenting this place on my trips to Chico and have to say that these are the nicest people ever! Their coffee and breakfast sandwiches (get it on the cheese bagel!) are excellent. I started coming here just as a passenger with my friend who lives close by and now I have to stop on my own when visiting. You are always greeted with a friendly smile and they make perfect suggestions for the times when I'm not really sure what I want. This last time it was a sugar free, ice blended black and white mocha with an extra squirt of sugar free vanilla syrup. I wouldn't have come up with that on my own had the worker not suggested it. The employees are always so nice and always try to give the best service possible. They even check for me if they have any banana bread (I have developed an addiction). I come through here about once a week on my way to work. I always get the same thing: a blended caramel latte with sugar free syrup and regular dairy. This is such a delicious weekly treat, and the people who work there are so nice. The folks who run this shop know how to hire employees. My son LOVES the butterfinger white mocha (blended). If your body can handle the sugar (mine can't) then this is a great summer dessert treat. Tip: when you pay by credit card they don't have the ability to add a tip on the receipt. Okay, so I decided to stop here because of the "Happy Hour" sign out front advertising any blended drink for $3.50. I ordered the Oreo cookie one and the kid at the window tells me it's an additional $.60 for the "specialty" drinks (which most of them are). I told him that it was false advertisement and he agreed, but I still owed him $4.10. The service was good and the drink was good, but I think it is very wrong to put a deal on a sign to bring in business and basically lie knowingly. To be honest, this is more comparing and contrasting the four Dutch Bros. and the two Java Detours in Chico than it is a review of any one place. I am a semi-regular to regular at all six spots and will be posting this in the reviews for the site from each that I frequent most often. As I think about the two chains it does seem like a no-brainer to like Java Detour a little better. They both have very tasty drinks but, in general, JD has better prices and a larger variety of drink options. The drink option comment is related to what you can actually see on the sign/menu. DB does have a "secret" menu that has some very good drinks but you would never know that unless someone told you about and it can be hard to remember the name of a particular drink you might have had when you try to order it again a couple of weeks later. Java Detour also has a much better variety of food. They have quite a few more sweet choices than Dutch Bros and they carry savory foods which DB does not have at all. That being said, the best single food from either place is Dutch Bros' lemon bread they get from Lovely Layers in Chico. It is absolutely fantastic. So, like I said, it seems like a no-brainer to prefer Java Detour. However, Dutch Bros also has its advantages. There are a couple of basic ones. Their four locations are conveniently spread around town so there is always one close by. That is not the case for Java Detour. Also, three of the four DBs are open 24 hours while the other is open until midnight. The JDs tend to close around 8pm and are often not open when I want a coffee or sweet drink. Another plus for DB is their atmosphere. A trip through their drive-thru is like a three minute party that brightens up a hum drum work day. Invariably, there is good music playing at an enjoyable volume and the baristas seem to be having a good time and it feels like they are generally happy to see you. Last, but definitely not least important, is customer service. For the most part Java Detour baristas are professionally warm and friendly. They say "How are you?", make your order quickly and give a sincere thank you and have a good day before you drive away. This category should be an advantage for Dutch Bros but their desire to be friendly and fun turn it into a negative. Their aforementioned good music with an enjoyable volume is, unfortunately, not a good business volume. They often cannot hear what I say and I have to repeat it. Other times, they think they hear what I said but I end up with the wrong order. I do not want to make this sound like that is a a frequent happening, it is not, but it has happened more than a few times. Also, while I believe their friendliness is genuine they seem to have programmed conversation starters such as "What do you do for a living?". It is a legitimate question and there is nothing wrong with it until the same person has asked you the question four times over the course of a month. It makes the inquiry seem a bit disingenuous. Look, I like both businesses and frequent each of them hundreds of times a year but I have to give the edge to Java Detour. They get five stars compared to four stars for Dutch Bros. read more
