So I saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The prices weren't too bad so I figured I'd give it a try. I ordered the shrimp shumai, fried lobster rangoon, a California roll, and a Shrimp Tempera roll. The shrimp shumai are steamed and don't really have a taste. The lobster rangoon barely has any meat, it's about 95% cream cheese, and taste like it was fried in old oil. The California roll and shrimp tempera roll were also alright. I feel like because of the old oil aftertaste, I couldn't really taste the flavors of the sushi. If I do try this place again, I'd skip on the appetizers and just eat the sushi. read more

You order at the counter, with the entire staff behind the wall. They make your order, and then put it in a box that you open and take it out. Completely separated from the customer - probably a Covid change that has stuck? Not sure. But you put the order in and they make it immediately for you. Anyway, wasn't quite what I was expecting thinking I was going to eat a meal out. But I decided to give it a shot anyway. I ordered the gyoza and two sushi rolls - one sweet potato tempura and one shrimp tempura with cream cheese and salmon. In terms of flavor, the gyoza was pretty solid - the sauce in particular was good. The sushi pieces were VERY large - the sweet potato was great when it was still warm. The salmon one would have benefited from a veggie - maybe some avocado - but the salmon was fresh. The rice consistency was a bit more starchy and not as flavorful as other places, and the wasabi was pretty weak. I ended up with leftovers that I ate for lunch today - the salmon held up great, but the sweet potato wasn't as good cold. The food was so good that I forgot to take a picture. Nonetheless, I called in a to-go order for a shrimp and chicken hibachi with steamed rice, a shrimp, steak and chicken hibachi with steamed rice, a spicy salmon roll, and a seaweed salad. Both of the hibachi meals came with miso soup. Every single item was delicious! I managed to remember to get a picture of the seaweed salad and the sushi roll but we totally forgot to take picture of our hibachi. Overall, food is amazing. I decided to try something new since the prices looked good but I'm not sure I would return. I placed an order for pickup on 6/12/24. The pickup time was 7:48. I arrived at 7:45 and was told it would be a few minutes. The food was not ready until 8:05pm, which is a decent wait for me considering I ordered almost 30 minutes before I arrived. My other concern was that the place was hot. Like the air condition was out? In my opinion, that's not a great look for somewhere serving raw fish. It made me skeptical from the jump. However, I did get my food and took it home. Review of food will be in the next paragraph. I got a special roll with real crab, some kani salad and decided to take the salmon roll from my husbands box dinner combo. He got the steak hibachi. My food was 4/10. The salmon was light pink in color and had a slightly fishy taste but the special roll brought me the most concern. The crab on top, while real, had a very acidic smell to it. It caught me off guard and I scraped it off to ensure I wouldn't get sick. My kani salad was My husband ate the steak from his box, he said the shrimp in the Gyoza smelled bad so that went in the trash. After he ate the steak, he threw our the rest and we hit up McDonald's. This wasn't the most expensive sushi (40 overall) and I understand that but I've had better for cheaper. I would have felt safer ordering from Kroger. I would not visit here again and feel that the ac getting fixed needs to be a priority, along with following estimated pick up times. Based on delivery experience: This place really gets you the most bang for your buck. With that said, it's not the most generous in serving sizes of all the sushi joints I frequent. The salad was good, dressing was okay. Miso soup was good as was the shumai. Sashimi dinner deluxe dish - felt cheated on quite a bit, crab sticks were included in the sashimi count... I've never been served imitation crab as sashimi before. Salmon maki probably would have tasted great had the hot food not been sitting on top of it and underneath in the delivery vehicle, cooking the maki half way and making it hot and chewy. Be sure to ask them to separate the hot and cold stuff! Leave tip for this on arrival and check the food. Also - get the sushi and sashimi combo - you won't get imitation crab in place of sashimi.... UPDATE: The salad was good with ginger dressing. It was fresh and a great portion. Fast forward, I get home and my meal is pretty tasty. I really didn't like the chicken. It had a weird taste and it was flat chicken, so it wasn't like chicken breast that I assumed it would be. The shrimp was the best part and the broccoli...which I got 3 broccoli pieces in my food. Okay. First and foremost, soy sauce is made from Water, Soybeans, Wheat, and Salt. Not the Kari-Out packets, which aren't even soy sauce. These packets are the Dane Cook of condiments, and I have to admit I'm a little pissed off that *Japan* Sushi House is using such a garbage product (basically a westerner invented what he thought was Soy Sauce and sold it en masse). I actually do not recommend this place. Why? It's because they give you the "regular" the "fake" soy sauce packets that you would get at any take out Chinese Restaurants. If you are a sushi lover you would and should know that sushi soy sauce is different from the regular type. It wouldn't taste right with regular and cheap fake sauce. Also, I had ordered the sashimi... they are thinly sliced so I suppose it's why they seem to be a little on the inexpensive side. I have to say when I looked at the menu I had quite high expectations as a fellow Asian, and quite frankly my expectations were met! I Was craving some good fried rice. And I have so say I'm impressed. I ordered the Grilled Vegetables w fried rice Hibachi style. The rice was perfectly seasoned, not too oily, I liked the variety of vegetables (broccoli, carrot, onions, zucchini). The dish had a very nice smokiness to it from the grill, full of flavour. And not stingy on the rice of veggies which is great. It was a very good portion for the price! For nicer rolls or sit-down dinners I would go to Hayashi in Newport News since it is more upscale. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Miso soup tasted like they just added water to one and split it between 5 bowls. Forgot our seaweed salad, and they knew about it and sent it anyway. We never received our drinks that we ordered. When we called back to tell them, they had an attitude and told us that they "only forgot our seaweed salad, not our drinks" meaning they knew that they forgot it and didn't care. Awful. There are not many good sushi places in Hampton, in my opinion, so I was scrolling through Google just looking for a new place to pick up from. I called Japan Sushi House and was excited when they offered delivery as an option. My estimated delivery time was 40 minutes and it got here in about an hour. The driver was nice and apologetic, and explained that he had to take four other deliveries along with mine. As a former delivery driver I totally understand, and after working all day I was just happy to not go anywhere. I got a ridiculous amount of food for a pretty reasonable price, I would say the sushi was on the same level as that of farm fresh or buffet sushi. I ordered the spicy maki combo, a crab roll, a salmon roll and received miso soup and salad with my order, tons of soy sauce, wasabi and chopsticks. The salmon roll was my favorite. I got my sushi fix, didn't have to go anywhere, and didn't pay an arm and leg so I will definitely be ordering again. My kids love the crab rolls so this will be a nice change up from ordering pizza or Chinese. read more
