I've been a customer of Japan Car Care since 2006. When I first starting taking my vehicle there, I lived a few minutes up the street. I have since moved to the suburbs but I will still make that journey into Houston so that Phong can properly check things out. I won't take my vehicles to anywhere else. My previous vehicle made it to 305,800 miles under Phong's care before I traded it in and my current one will hit 200k miles soon. I noticed an unsightly rating for this business and I have to shake my head. Again, I've been a customer for 15 years (and hopefully several more) and I have never had a negative experience with neither Kim nor Phong. And to the person who doubts their vehicle can get repaired the same day as drop-off, yes Japan Car Care can make it happen. Believe it. They have done this for me multiple times, if it's not possible then they'll be honest and tell you up-front so you can arrange for another way home. I'll drop off the vehicle and work in the lobby or catch a ride to Barnes & Noble and return once I'm notified the vehicle is ready. They are organized and have a great relationship with their suppliers so the parts do arrive quickly. The shop ran pretty well before Kim came on board but once she came in, she helped streamline the process and smoothed everything out. I have actually witnessed people come in and try to go past her to get to Phong and that just isn't the way it works. If you speak to Kim with respect and tell her what your needs are, then you'll get taken care of. She is the gate-keeper, helps her husband stay organized and ensures that none of the small details are overlooked. They may not always tell you what you want to hear in regards to your vehicle, but what you need to hear. They do high quality work and do their best to get you back on the road as quickly as possible. I highly recommend this shop and will continue to bring my current and any future vehicles here. read more

Over 20 years ago, I dropped off my car, back then, an old Corolla to be checked out by Phong... I came back a couple of hours later and he told me everything's fine and didn't even charge me. When I popped the hood, it was clean! He even cleaned the engine and did not want to charge me! That's when I knew I found MY mechanic. So from then on, I only take my other cars to JAPAN CAR CARE. I do not use his services just because he's nice.... I mean, his a solid mechanic! He's very skillful and trustworthy. First of all, I believe you won't find a better service and competitive price out there. I have lived in Miami, Los Angeles and now Houston, and I have never found a better mechanic. I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner and after three different and unsuccessful mechanics Mr. Lee was the only one honest and able to fix a mayor issue I had on the steering system of my truck. After that Mr. Lee has help me upgrade and maintain my old 250k+ miles truck running like a new beast! Second of all let me tell you that the only 2 bad reviews on this place are very unfair. I have come to know Mr. Lee and Ms. Kim and they are great and very honest people. At first Ms. Kim seems to be a serious person but once you get to know her, you will se she is a very kind and helpful woman. To me Ms. Kim and Mr. Lee are like the perfect yin-yang team. Will never go to this store. I was a student in college station and went to their store in Houston because they have a great review rate, but very disappointed. This couple are both dishonest.  For checking the vehicle, the male owner drove my vehicle for around 10 minutes and then opened the hood to have a look at the engine and timing belt only and then lifted my car to check bottom and wheels.  It took less than 30 minutes totally including driving my car. The male owner said that my car had problems including oil leakage from engine, timing belt wearing and alignment. They asked $1100 dollars for fixing the oil leakage problem and around $1800 for replacing the whole belt unit and $95 dollars for alignment. And they said the needed accessories could be ordered tonight and claimed that if I drop my car by 8 :30 am tomorrow they would fix my car by the same day. $ 3,000 is a big purchase, and I want to know how they can fix it in one day if this problem is so serious. I asked them to explain whether it is necessary to replace the two entire unit as they recommended and I wanted to know the unit price and labor price, I think I have right to know the brand or vendor of the units they will use, but they refused to explain all of these. When he was checking my car, I was with him.  He only used a wrench to remove one of the several screws on the casing of the timing belt and looked at the condition of the timing belt through the gap in the casing after removing the screws. He did not check the detail to find out what was exactly necessary to be replaced and then rushed me to replace the two entire units. I just want more explanations. When I first showed that the price was too high and I needed to think about it, the female owner's face immediately changed, they gave me a handwritten receipt with unrecognizable words and said if I don't repair the car here, I need to pay the checking fee and leave quickly. They said their service is done and have no patience to explain. Finally, I called 911 for help. Before the policemen came, as I said they gave me a list with what needed to fix and the totally price was around $3000. I regretted I didn't take a picture of the original list they show to me with total price of around $3000, because after the policemen came, they show the policemen another list with totally price of only $ 1350. Finally, I had to pay $75 for the lesson I learned from them (Price of checking vehicle). Don't rely on the reviews because they are not really reliable.  I couldn't imagine how they gets so many good reviews. Another thing is they asked my driver license and write my personal info down.  What gave them the right to do so? I wrote these to share with you the actual service situation of this store. Update: The next day, I went to Firestore to check my car again, it cost only $22 and the mechanic spend 1.5 hour to finish the inspection. They used some equipment that I don't know to check my car. They are much more professional than the owner of Japan Car Care. Finally, the mechanic from Firestone recommended me to replace spark plug and engine valve cover gasket, do tire rotation, wheel alignemnt, and change oil. It costs only around $900 in Firestone, much different from the price of Japan Car Care. Also, there is no problem with the timing belt which the owner of Japan claimed had problems. I've been going to Phong Le at Japan Car Care for over 10 years. I grew up on that side of town but I've been living in midtown the last four years and I still drive to the northside if I ever need my car looked at. Hell, I drive down there just for an oil change because that's how much I appreciate his work and honesty. For whatever reason, the mechanic industry has a reputation as being distrustful and nobody is ever pleased with the mechanic they have, but Phong Le is the most honest mechanic out there. He's a great guy who is friendly, knowledgeable, and as far as I know has the most honest shop in this entire city. If you have a Japanese made car, this is the only place I would recommend taking it. Honest guy! Phong would not hesitate to tell you to fix something or not. He was educated at Toyota training institute and continues to hone his skills by keeping up with all new information. He would tell you how to look up your "troubles" online yourself. Always with a friendly smile, he has become our family mechanic for the last 10 years. Phong is great with Japanese cars, but this should not deter anyone from bringing him other makes and models. He would tell you flat out if he can do the job or not. Sometime for fun, he would stubbornly research an issue until he can resolve it if the car is foreign to him. As it turned out it's just a zero calibration needed with the use of paper clip. Our family mechanic shop that serviced over half a dozen of our cars for the last 14 years .The owner/head mechanic, Phong is extremely friendly and knowledgable about import cars. If he doesn't know something, he will tell you upfront. He's not afraid to point you in the direction to get your vehicle serviced knowing that he will potentially lose a service. Went to get a quote. It was for a VTEC valve for Honda that I have replaced myself in the past. Its pretty easy with three screws. I just did not felt this time to do it. I was quoted $250.00 just for labor. I said no thank you. Got it done for $70.00 at another place. No I do not recommend them read more

My family and I have been coming to Phong to get our cars serviced for over 20 years. He is the best mechanic I've ever encountered, and I've needed a few, as I've owned many used cars throughout the years. He is very friendly when you first meet him, and will listen to your car's problem(s) with patience, asking questions about logical issues that might explain the problem. Once he's finished repairing/ servicing your car, he will go into detail about what the problem with your car was and why it happened, and is not shy about sharing info about any car manufacturer's shortcomings. He is honest in his dealings with people, and treats each person as a person, not as a possible dollar amount. In fact, he has just serviced our car for nothing (literally no money) if the 'problem' wasn't really a problem, at times.
