BE VERY CAREFUL HIRING CLEANLINE -- READ THIS BEFORE YOU DO…read more I hired Cleanline to auger my sewer drain because it was backing up into my basement. I had to work, so my wife stayed home for the appointment. The technician started at the outdoor cleanout. He then went into the basement, but my wife was never informed that he would be using the basement cleanout or that doing so would cost an additional $295. She allowed him into the basement because he said he needed to make sure the auger wouldn't hit the toilet. My wife paid the bill by check, and they didn't even leave us a receipt. When I got home, I started the dishwasher and the basement immediately backed up again. The next morning, I called Cleanline's office and had them email me a receipt. That's when I discovered the charges were: * $195 for the outdoor cleanout * $295 additional for the basement cleanout I explained to the office that my wife had never been told about the additional charge or asked for approval. I also had the technician call me back. When I confronted him about not asking my wife for approval before using the basement cleanout, he apologized and did not dispute what I was telling him. I also told them the drain was still backing up. They said their technician had gotten very little tree root out and found a lot of mud. They told me the drain had likely collapsed and that we would need to dig up our yard and replace it. I asked them to run a camera to confirm the drain had actually collapsed. They wanted another $300 to do it. I told them I was not willing to pay them another $300 when they had already charged us $295 for work my wife had never approved or even been told would cost extra. I argued that the $295 should instead be credited toward the camera inspection, because if Cleanline had properly explained the situation and given us the choice, I would have chosen to have the drain camera-inspected rather than have them perform the additional basement cleanout. Cleanline refused to credit the $295 or work with us on the situation. We called another company. They charged us $120 to camera the drain. I personally watched the camera footage with the technician. The drain had NOT collapsed. The second company found that the drain was in good condition and explained that Cleanline had used a small auger that only opened a narrow path through the tree roots, rather than using a larger 3-inch auger that would have been more appropriate. Thankfully, we got a second opinion before allowing anyone to dig up our yard. We could have potentially spent thousands of dollars -- possibly $10,000 or more -- replacing a drain that was actually fine. The biggest problem wasn't simply that Cleanline failed to completely clear the roots. Mistakes happen. It's the combination of the undisclosed additional charge, the drain immediately backing up again, the incorrect diagnosis, and their poor customer service and unwillingness to take responsibility or work toward a reasonable solution. We had to call another company to properly diagnose the problem, and fortunately avoided what could have been a massive and completely unnecessary expense. If Cleanline tells you that your drain needs to be dug up and replaced, I strongly recommend getting an independent camera inspection and a second opinion before spending thousands of dollars.
