For starters you are greeted with a set- up, and I mean a set-up!! Homemade hushpuppies, sliced onions, cup of pinto beans, cold slaw, pickled tomatoes! Wow!! Does not matter what you order, this set-up comes almost as soon as you sit down! YUMMMMM. The menu offers all the classics, fish, shrimp, steaks and more, but we came for the catfish!! I haven't had a bad experience here. I've been recommending the Blind Tiger as having the best catfish in Shreveport. However, if you want something served a little faster that is arguably fresher, more seasoned, crispier - as well as something that comes with a baked potato, delicious pickled tomato/tomato relish, bean soup, Coleslaw, and fresh onion and lemon slices, then I'd recommend getting a catfish plate from Jan's. This place is hopping !! Arrived at 4:20pm on a Saturday 09/09/23, they opened at 4:30pm, a line had already formed outside w/at least 2 dozen folks. Our server was Karen, awesome. The wait for service was maybe 5 minutes, if that. The wait service was ready w/home made hush puppies. Took our order, came out with relish, tartar sauce, pinto beans. (ask for onions, if you want them). I've seen bad reviews of certain patrons sitting elsewhere, NOT true the night we were there. Friendly & awesome service. My sister and I walked in at 4:30pm & left no later than 5:00-5:15pm. We couldn't have asked for better service or food. I'll be going back for sure. read more

I notice that every review that mentions Black customers being seated in the back or treated with poor service is flagged and not currently recommended. Well, for the few people who see this before it gets hidden, that's exactly what happened to me and the rest of my Black family when we ate here. The host showed us through the main dining room to the back, where one other Black couple was eating. I didn't think much of it at first because we were there about an hour before closing, but I realize they walked us past several people who were eating in the main room. It's poor form to try and silence people giving their honest impressions of a place. Jan's if you feel you make all your customers welcome, or if you try to, regardless of race, then you should be able to respond openly when someone (let alone several people) tells you they were uncomfortable in your establishment. When we entered the parking lot, I'm already impressed. Looks like a hole-in-the-wall and the best places are ALWAYS hole-in-the-walls. Arrived 15 minutes till open and folks are in the parking lot waiting... it's THURSDAY! This place filled up at opening! The bean soup, hush puppies, pickled green tomatoes, coleslaw, tartar sauce, and fresh sliced onion come with the drinks and they pair like a CHAMP! My wife ordered the fillets and I ordered the Frog Legs and fried pickles for an appetizer! GREAT Fish and order the Frog Legs woth extra seasoning (you won't be disappointed)! I have been a faithful customer for many years and never been disappointed until tonight. Was in line before they opened the doors. Got to the hostess and told her party of 8. Was taking my name & I ask about the table by the bathroom. They said that ONLY a party of ten can sit there. So, then a party of 13 came in behind us & they put tables together in the middle and sat there party before us. I nicely asked the manager why they put it for 13 and not 8. Her answer was that a party of 8 had to be sat by the wall which meant that we had to wait until they ate and left which would be at least a hour. I am a very patient person but this did not make any sense. I mentioned it to a long time waiter and next thing he was coming and sitting us down at 4:55pm at the big table by the restrooms. So, we waisted all that time and he did what the manager could have done. Then we get our beans and hush puppies as soon as we sat down. A little bit later we asked for cold slaw. Her response was she couldn't bring it until they ate and orders was turned in. We had been ready for a while to turn our orders in. Am I the only one that likes to eat my beans and cold slaw at the same time? The owners were my neighbors and am sad that they both passed away because it has gone down hill. The best fried catfish in the Arkla Tex ! Served with the best hush puppies, nice crisp French fries and the coleslaw delicious. The green tomatoes are the best I've ever had and you can ask for onion and you get big onion slices to eat with your meal. They also serve steak, fried oysters, and burgers and some other items. Food is decent, but the grimy floor grossed me out. It's been bad for years. But I guess it isn't too bad, because if someone suggests we eat at Jan's, I'm ready to go. I had filet fish and baked potato. Potato was not quite hot but not cold enough to get sent back. I got 3 filets off the senior special section. I felt special saving 40 cents off from the regular price. Shame on me for complaining. The regular price isn't too bad anyway. Although I've forgotten the prices. My friend got fried shrimp. And a bowl of well seasoned (pinto) bean soup, too. The fries that come with the catfish are good, but there's a good chance they'll be cold (even if the fish is hot and fresh). Lots of other aides available, but again, I've never seen anyone order them. Get the fish, eat all the extras, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, and leave your phone in the car - cell signal is blocked by the metal building , so enjoy the company of the people you are with. Cry me a River. I was at Jan's 2 weeks ago set in the dinning area near the check out. (Assume the main dinning room) A Black couple set on each side of us. We actually engaged in great conversation with one of the couples. Very nice folks. By the way did I say I'm a proud Southern White Boy. The cashier had an excuse "yes we are short handed on wait staff" well that's not our fault. U have 4 people sitting behind the register doing nothing, teamwork makes the dream work. In my home growing up Friday's were known as fried fish Friday's. My mom would cook up either whole catfish or fillets and I was in charge of peeling the potatoes for the homemade fries. My dad would toss together the salad with ranch. This tradition carried on long after I became an adult and eventually until my mom passed a year and a half ago. Since I am home visiting it is only proper that we head to Jan's for Fried Fish Friday. I ordered the 5 piece fillet + 2 whole 1 fillet for my dad. We were not sure if we were hungry enough for the all you can eat today. (Now I have had the all you can eat in the past and they are constantly dropping fresh fish and bringing it out on a constant.) We were told that we can always upgrade to the all you can eat if we wanted more. So we settled with the above order in addition to getting 2 sweet teas. The total was about $38 before tip. Each meal is accompanied by: Raw onion Pickled green tomatoes Coleslaw Hush puppies Beans I do not eat green tomatoes but the coleslaw is always the right amount of crisp and sweet, the hush puppies are crunchy on the outside and soft and seasoned on the inside, and the beans are piping hot and good. Definitely drop a hush puppy into your beans and you will find they are a perfect match. The service at Jan's and the food is the reason why I always return and recommend them to others. I can only remember one of the server's name which is Taylor. However, both ladies were delightful and efficient and made sure we were in top shape our entire time.
