Wow what a great hidden gem! I am sad I have only found this place two weeks ago. You walk in to a bar style dining area and there are curtains to hid the stage area. The stage area is pretty big, they serve food there and during concerts there is only seating at the VIP area, but during comedy they set up tables and more seating. There are posters all over which gives it a really cool music coffee house vibe. I have come for a rock concert, which was really fun! We were standing towards the back of the crowd, but since it was not the busy it was pretty close up. I also came here for a late night comedy show. They had six acts and each one had me laughing. I am definitely going to keep the schedule up for this place and become a regular! The tickets are really reasonably priced so it is a great way to get out of the house without breaking the bank. So far I have not tried any food here, but I'm sure I will. They also have pitchers of water with cups out, which is really nice. read more

So I saw a kids show here. We went to hear Rocknocerous. Tickets were $10, but then there was a handling fee of 3. So $39 for me and my kids to get in. It was a bit crowded. I don't like how they had seats set up. Many empty seats were just holding coffees and parents didn't think to hold them or put them under their seats. Not much room to move around. The drinks and snacks were expensive....I think I paid $12 for two milks, a hot chocolate and 2 small bags of pretzels. Not sure I would want to go to this venue again. read more

We went to Jammin Java a couple weeks ago, prior to the blizzards when we could go out! The headliner was Chris Ayer and boy does that guy have a set of pipes! Not only is he talented, but he's got great stage presence and pulls the audience into his world while he is performing. This is a great local music venue. The food is very deli-like, but serves your munchie needs before or during a show. They have a full bar and actually have a water station right on the end of the counter so you can help yourself...love that! Jammin Java has had a good coffee selection since I've been coming here, not fancy, just good coffee - and you can get specialty drinks as well. There is always something for every music taste coming thru the venue and the prices are extremely reasonable for a night of live music. This is the type of place that makes you want to come out on a Wednesday night, take in someone you've not heard of before, and expand your music horizons! read more

Went back to Jammin' Java to see Julie Fowlis perform this past Saturday evening. http://www.juliefowlis.com/ Julie is from Scotland, and her three band-mates performed an evening of predominantly Scottish folk tunes, with a few Irish ones (probably to appease the cittern player (who also happens to be her husband). Julie sang almost everything in Scots-Gaelic - which is a beautiful sounding language. She also played some form of whistle on several songs. She was accompanied by Jenna Reid on the fiddle, and another gentleman on acoustic guitar. The performance was enjoyable, joyous, fun, and energizing. Julie is really cute and she tells these amusing stories about what each song is about. The highlight of the evening is when they were done - they came back for an encore - Julie goes to the Mic and she says: "Sorry Mr. soundman - I didn't tell you about this," She then turns and goes to the back of the stage - and pulls a set of Highland Bagpipes from a case and begins to tune them up. Everyone started cheering! (I love the Highland pipes!). A fun thing of note - a young couple was sitting in the front row - and they had their baby girl with them. I am guessing she was about 14 months or so young - she could stand on her own. That little girl was absolutely enthralled by the music - her Mother set her on a chair (with the back of the chair facing the stage) so she could stand on it and see the stage - her mother crouched next to the chair with her hands in a position to prevent the little girl from falling off the chair should she lose her balance. The little girl gripped the back of chair and she danced, and she danced, and she danced - the whole time! It was nice to see folks exposing their children to quality, wholesome music at such a young age! As usual, the ambiance was excellent, the performance was well-attended. The triple shot latte I ordered was strong on the espresso side and the foam was creamy and well done. read more

This place is a hike from where I live, but if someone I want to see live doesn't come to Baltimore, they come here, and that's fine with me. This place is adorable! It's in a cute little area surrounded by a few interesting shops, including a CVS and a Starbucks (which is great if you're waiting outside the place before doors open and you have to pee). Inside is great for small shows. Nice little stage and sitting area, great acoustics. Their coffee bar is phenomenal, which is great for a coffee-lover like me. On the alcoholic side of things, moderately priced and good mixed drinks. I've had great experiences here. Everything has always been very organized, the establishment itself is clean and simple. And it seems like a fabulous local place to go for lunch or to sit outside with some coffee. read more

Really, really nice venue for music. Intimate but large enough to have a crowd that can get into it. High quality sound and equipment shows that they're dedicated to bringing quality performances. Don't take the fact that it is in a strip mall next to a Safeway too far. Once you walk through the door you'll forget all of that. Also, don't think that it is just a coffeeshop, they also serve beer. They also appear to have kid/family oriented shows frequently. I gotta get me some kids so I can go check one of those out. Food is good - generous chili bowls with cornbread, beer is cheap, and the music is great. If you already live in nova - this is a great place to go on a friday when you don't feel like heading back into dc. I might just make this my new home. ;^) It is located in near suburbia, but vienna has a cool granola feel to it. Trying to make it during rush hour on the beltway is rough though. The easy convenience of stopping by during the day makes me wonder how difficult it is to find parking in this strip mall for their shows. Strangely homey feel despite the unrelated decor. Venue's fairly intimate. Jazz musician was warming up when I stopped in to pick up some flyers and grabbed a large chai latte. All the staff members I interacted with were really nice. Those cups retain heat, watch your tongue! Not the best chai I've had but I'd be willing to get it here again. read more

Chill, music venue in Vienna with young, hip acts. We came on Saturday night to see Ballyhoo and it was definitely a young scene here. I'm glad the teens out in the burbs have a place to come and express themselves (says your mom). Pretty great beer list, not your usual shitty beer options; even has cider and Red Stripe. The space inside is pretty small and intimate so it makes for a more relaxing scene. I returned the next day for a morning coffee and was pleased to see they actually make gourmet coffees and lattes. I ordered my standard Iced Toffee Nut latte with skim milk and was quickly accommodated. They also had a church service going on there early Sunday morning. If only they knew of the shenanigans and heathens that filled the place only hours before... read more

REVIEW ON BOOKING VENUE FOR PRIVATE EVENT This is now my 4th client event at JJ's. Every year has been a vast improvement, but this last event was most ideal and it's all because they have an outside party, Impact Collective, to help manage. Food is no longer provided via JJ's and you must choose an outside caterer, so we went with Mission BBQ. It didn't bother us b/c we could now serve our clients a full meal instead of pizza, chili, and hot dogs. This left the bar open to do what it does best, serve drinks. My clients didn't have to hang around the bar to figure out which slice or bowl was there. Simply put there was never any crowding. MAJOR WIN BRINDLEY'S! Set up was easy, all those details were solidified via the walk through. Our performer's team worked with JJ's production team and everything seemed to be smooth sailing there. I'm not musically inclined, but the band kept giving their praises during sound check, so JJ's sound guy had to be good, right? I think his name was Tommy. Dan, manager with JJ, along with Natalie, from Impact Collective, were professional and extremely helpful. I could tell they really wanted our event to go well and it did. Overall, it's a great venue and the improvements they've made over the past year are a great sign for the future. I look forward to continuing our relationship with JJ's. read more

"I am trapped in hipster hell." This is an actual quote I saw written in one of the bathroom stalls. Yes, it is full of hipsters. But my problem (one reason I demote a star) is all the teenagers. Oh my god I thought I was at a homecoming dance with all the 16-year-olds screaming and talking way too loud. The only people older than me were parents accompanying their minors. That being said, it is a great intimate little concert venue. There's a view of the stage from pretty much anywhere in the place, and you really can't beat the ticket prices. The show I went to was sold out, but there was plenty of room to breathe which I appreciated. Bartenders were surprisingly efficient and friendly, but nothing on tap (boo). I didn't order any food, but looking around, their food did look tasty (they have 4 different kinds of chili on the menu). One more major caveat: no Metro accessibility. But thanks to the magic of Zipcar, I'll make another trek out to Jammin' Java in the future. read more

I was under the mistaken impression that JJ was a Christian coffee house so I never gave it a shot. My mistake! PROS -well decorated interior. -really good sound. -good beer at OK prices. -super clean/big restrooms. -Seating instead of standing room at the foot of the stage. "Whenever I think of Vienna, I think of sausages," boyfriend, on venturing out to the suburbs. I surprised my boyfriend for Valentine's Day 2010 with tickets to "All You Need is Love Songwriters Circle - Tribute to the Beatles & Love Songs," which sounds a lot mushier than it actually was. The concert itself was perfect. An intimate acoustic concert in which each of the four songwriters alternated between playing Beatles songs and their own "love songs" (some about the darker side of love), combining for a total of 18 songs. Just as good as the songs was the humorous banter between the songwriters. They had great chemistry and their personalities and musical styles complimented each other well. While some people may have qualms about going out to the 'burbs, I think the venue combines the many positive aspects of its location. Prices were reasonable, parking was easy, and the crowd was laid back and diverse. Also, unlike everything else in the strip mall- this is a family run place and you can tell that they go out of their way to look for new and interesting performers. Minor complaints: our show was a sit down concert and the rows of chairs were very close together for someone with long legs like me. Also, when I bought tickets online I "saved" $3 on each ticket, but then was charged a $3 convenience fee. The food selection isn't the most interesting (in addition to the odd fact that they have a kid's menu charging $6 for uncrustables), but there are a lot of good food options nearby. Overall, the good far outweigh the bad so my boyfriend and I definitely plan on coming back and checking out more performances. read more

Went there once for an event. The bartenders were great and attentive. Very chill vibe. The place is small and I can imagine it gets crowded very fast. For the dancers out there... there is a small patch of wood flooring up by the stage for dancing at least :) One of the brothers who own the place even gave me two tickets to any show. We've been here for a few events and it's a good venue for a show. We've tried their appetizers and beers and found them to be quite good, especially for a venue/bar. It's also a relatively small space but they do a good job of managing the space so it works well. We've been in the seated section for the shows and the waiter service has been excellent given that there is a show going on. In other venues this becomes a problem but Jammin' Java does quite a good job of it. read more

We came here for the Christmas Clusterf*ck. Although it was their 10th anniversary, it was our first time seeing this show. We splurged for "VIP" seats, which means you get a reserved seat at a table with service. I have come before and stood by the bar, and it's never really crowded even when sold out but we really didn't want to stand through the whole thing this time. The show itself was awesome and fun and appropriate for all ages, though the musicians were clearly drinking and a bit tipsy by the end. The food was a step up from fried bar food (baguette sandwiches and hot dogs). The service was what you'd expect-feels like a little slow, if you drink fast you might think it's really slow, but it's fast enough to not have to order two drinks at once. Fortunately the slower pace helped keep me from getting drunk. I have seen other shows here and in all, this is a great place to see an intimate show. My only issues are that for in-demand musicians, it can sell out quickly because it is so small, and it isn't an easy drive from DC if the show starts at 7. If you're a local, you know what I'm talking about. Vienna rush hour traffic is a mess. read more

Let's quickly dispense with the negative points: is it in downtown DC? No. Is it near a metro stop? No. And I have not been able to try their food or beverages because it's been too crowded and the lines were very long. All of that, however, is strongly outweighed with Jammin' Java's good points. They have a wide variety of musical acts coming through, and every one I've seen has been top notch. JJ has a big stage, a lot of seating available, and great acoustics. It manages to maintain an intimate feel to the performances, even if you are in the back of the room. This is one of my favorite venues in the DC area, and I strongly urge you to give it a try. read more

Ok, so I'm a bit of a misanthrope, and it will be affecting my review to a certain extent. Therefore, take the negative attitude with a grain of salt. People of NoVA. Why pay to go see live music if you're going to sit and talk through the entire musical set with your buddies? And it's bad enough that you're talking through the entire set, but do you have to raise your voice so that your buddies (and everyone else around you) can hear you over the music? Some people want to actually hear music instead of the story about the latin chick you banged last night... (Yes, you know who you are). Learn sign language! And another thing. When there's a crowd of people standing listening to a show, there are informal lanes that are formed for people to get through to places such as the restroom and the bar. Please, for the love of god, don't stop in the middle of the walking lane to chit-chat with your buddies and block everyone else from getting through. I hope your babies are born with hooves! That said, the staff at JJ can't control the fact that NoVA is full of pretentious self-absorbed dillweeds. They did their best to keep the bar lines to a minimum, and to make the experience enjoyable. For a small venue, it can get quite lively. Oh, and stimulants and depressants (Coffee and Liquor) mix quite well together. :) read more

It is a quiet Friday AM. This place has a lot of character. They have a large and small stage with seating for performances. The menu is pretty basic with gourmet hot dogs and sandwiches but what do you expect. The barrista explained to me it is a coffee shop, music school, and a concert hall. They have a full bar for the night time crowd. I would describe it as Starbucks meets House of Blues. I adopted it as my office this morning and looking forward to some live music tonight.. read more

Cannot believe the caliber of musicians they get in this intimate little club in Vienna. What a great place to see a show - so civilized to have a seat with table service. The food is really decent too, so arrive early and enjoy dinner. We really need to come more often - to keep the place in business and to support lesser known musicians. The only times I have been here was when my cousin (an aspiring vocalist and actor initials T.H.) has performed while in town from California. This is a great venue for up and coming performers and several now well-known artists have taken the stage at the Jammin' Java in the early years of their careers. The location is really weird and disguised Unless you knew what it was you would never guess because it is located at the corner of a tiny strip mall. You can find it right next to the Walgreens inside the town of Vienna. The front of the business looks like it could be a typical privately-owned Starbucks wanna-be, It's not until you get inside that you can see there is a stage in the back against the far wall, a bar type counter against the left wall with kitchen and tables along the front separated from the stage area. There is also raised seating with tables within view of the stage along the left wall for VIP and reserved guests. THEY DO NOT HAVE THEATER SEATING, if you have a popular artist, you can expect standing room only in front of the stage. I can't comment on the food as I only had beers during my visits. This is a great spot for aspiring artists to get some exposure and for the citizens of Vienna to get some cheap entertainment. Even so, compared to other small venues around the area, I can only consider it average and thus garners three stars from me. read more

This place has really awesome vibes. It's THE smallest place I've ever seen a concert at, and even though it was a sold-out show, it hardly felt like it. I was expecting it to be super crammed but it wasn't. 180 people capacity? Didn't seem like it. I had enough room to put my stuff down (actually put it down on the stage), and people weren't in my face or blocking my view. Anyways, I'm so grateful my favorite band decided to play such an intimate place. I saw The Academy Is... here last night, and couldn't believe how close I got. Front row, touching the stage, no barricade, relaxed crowd, great sound, couldn't have asked for more. If ever a band I like plays here (it's usually little known local bands), I'd love to come back and have that experience again. However, I did have issues with the way they handled the lines. First off, I called twice asking if I could come around noon for the 7:00 show, and they told me that sure, I could wait around. I get there around that time, and whaddya know, they say I can't stay there. Wow. How uncouth. So I wander around for 4 hours and finally get in line at around 4:00. Only about 8 people hanging around, so I'm near the front. They tell us they would let us in at 5:30, which was great since it was FREEZING, bitter, dangerously cold. It's almost 7:00 and people are still freezing to death outside. They wouldn't explain what the hell was going on. That sucked. I don't think this place is used to hosting huge bands like TAI. My advice for them would be to learn how to handle a bigger crowd. Otherwise, awesome time. This place is rad (once you actually get inside). read more

We're from New York, but find the club and owners to be solid, professional, which means they aren't above being human. We're playing monday, May 9th on our way back from Asheville. Who knew good times could be had at a strip mall? This is a nice place to catch a local act. An acquaintance of a friend of a very good friend was playing and you really can't beat $12 for nice music. The bartender was a really perky and sweet young woman who was not light handed on the liquor. My friend thinks she needs to work on her vodka gimlet but my drink was just fine. I didn't get to catch the opening acts. Eric Scott (a pop/blues/soul singer with elements of rock, gospel, etc) was headlining and we got there right before he went on stage. We were able to snag a seat in the front row. It was a great show. I love the intimate feel of such a small setting. I wish it was easier to get to but then it would probably be overcrowded and I would lose all desire to go again. It is now on my list of cool places to catch a live show. read more

It's odd to find a decent live music venue... now, try to find one in a little suburban town... harder still. This one is in a coffee house in a strip mall. Shocker. And they have a full bar! And decent acts almost every single night... for cheap. When you can't find something super-awesome to do, this place is awesome enough on its own. Just don't bet on getting a seat. Tables are limited, and the rest of the limited seating is on some really uncomfortable chairs. So, wear comfy shoes. read more

From the exterior, Jammin Java has the appearance of another boring suburban strip mall venue. However, once you get on the inside the scene totally changes into super trendy music/coffee house. I swear, I thought I had travelled to another town when I stepped indoors! A very friendly staff awaits you along with a very cool (literally because the AC was cranked the entire night) non-pretentious vibe. Adequate beer (they have Chimay and Duvel in the bottle) and food (sandwich and appetizer fare) selections, with liquor drinks available as well. Coffee choices are top notch. As a music venue, JJ rivals the best rooms in DC. Large stage, great seating and very nice sound quality that make either acoustic groups or full rock bands sound fantastic. This is the main reason you should make the trip here. Which leads me to..... Downside for JJ are location, location, location. Be prepared to drive 20-30 minutes outside of DC to the super sterile Vienna area. Very much like IOTA in Arlington, except the food choices are not as extensive and it is non-smoking. read more

Like everyone else seems to say, who woulda thunk? Great cozy little venue with friendly staff, good and interesting food, and a decent performance area. And for the price it can't be beat! Seriously, the ticket in and dinner totaled around $25 or so? It was almost like a private show or something too what with a table for my sibs and I with food and drink while Ms. Leigh Nash swooning away just 30 ft from us. And the food! You only pay between $8-12 but for that price, such interesting and good options. I had the turkey and slaw sandwich. At first my tastebuds didn't know what they were experiencing. But then it hit me: this sandwich was great. Such a unique flavor and I knew I had made the right choice. So like the sandwich, Jammin' Java is a unique little find in the middle of suburban VA and smack dab in a shopping center. Not what you would expect, but the moment you walk in and get your first taste, you know it was the right decision. Go, even for an artist you've never heard of. Go and support this place! read more

My band drumfish did a CD release party at Jammin Java. It was tough to get the date locked in, but once we did, they were really great to work with. The owners are three brothers who come from the music scene so they are sympathetic to the needs of the band. They try to work with you to create the best possible event for you and for them. The lady who handles ticket sales is named Mei, and she is unbelievably great to work with. She is more than happy to take emails, phone calls or IMs at any time and give you an update on the ticket sale numbers. The sound guy is named Pat and he does a really nice job also. He worked really hard to get our stage and sound set up properly. The one potential difficulty is that you'll have to split the night with another act. So you'll either have to get off the stage quickly, or set up quickly. We headlined and therefore had to scramble setting up. We didn't really get a sound check. Though as noted before, Pat the sound guy did a really good job getting things in orde. All of our "fans" loved the venue as well and can't wait to get back there and see us again. We can't wait ourselves! read more

I visited for the first time this past weekend to see a kid's band with my daughter and a friend and her son. The showtime was 10:30 a.m. We arrived well before show time and had to stand in line inside (with the line wrapping around and out the door) on a chilly fall morning. I could see that the band was all set up well before they opened the venue for everyone to go in, and wondered why we weren't allowed to get seated. My major complaint is with the woman who was the ticket-taker. Her attitude was as if everyone there was the biggest inconvenience to her. Super un-professional and horrendous customer service. At one point, she asked everyone to form a single file line. She then exasperated very audibly "This is like herding sheep". I was so turned off. THEN, as we are moving in the ticket line to hand over our tickets-a patron goes to ask her a question. She very rudely told him "Can you ask me that later when I'm done dealing with these 200 people?" Again, very unprofessional. Management-I would take a hard look at your staff and evaluate the way they are treating your customers. Maybe a course in how to effectively provide customer service would do this particular woman some good. I read more

I can see why this place gets such raving reviews on Yelp. Cool vibe, nice staff, and lots of touring musicians. It's definitely a nice place to wind down and listen to music without having to venture into DC. Of course, when I went, they were hosting a kid's party so it wasn't as chilled as I would like it to be... The coffee on the otherhand needs some work to be "jammin'" My mocha was pretty watery and I couldn't really taste any chocolate from it. Even at $3.50, I wasn't about to consume unnecessary calories unless it was worth risking the extra lb of fat. So, go for the shows and order the cheapest coffee you can get or better yet, get bottled drinks. read more

If I could, I would live at Jammin Java. I find myself going there atleast once a week. The staff there is amazing, they're always on top of things. If you're hungry I suggest getting the Nachos! They are delicious! :) There is so many different kinds of shows, for all ages. The sound system is great, the space is relatively small so it gives it a more intimate feel. Is it a coffeehouse? Is it a music club? Is it a dinner joint that serves "gourmet" hot dogs and chili? It's all three and despite the challenge in defining its identity, it's just great. I enjoyed some incredible live music the night I visited. There are small tables scattered throughout the venue, but I sat in one of the chairs facing the stage without a table. I should have ordered a sandwich since it would have been easier to eat but ordered some "gourmet" chili, which was served over fragrant rice with fresh lime, chopped onions, cilantro, cheddar, and tortilla chips. It was hard to eat not sitting at a table, but I made it work and really enjoyed it. Prices are slightly higher in the evening, but nonetheless reasonable. For many concerts, you will also pay a cover, but it is usually well worth the expense. read more
