The fish fried rice from Garden of Bilal is legendary in these Uptown streets. They had a location that closed on Wadsworth Ave., so I'm happy they brought it back. Ion care whose name is on the awning..LOL. The review from JL Jupiter is worth ALL the hype: https://youtu.be/op00zFJ5-70?si=fsYfFYXsZUdN63DS

Drove pass this restaurant several times on the weekends; however, the lines were too long. Today, Oct. 4, 2023, the line was the shortest I've ever seen, so I decided to stop. It was about 12:40pm. The wait time from the line to walking out with my food was an hour. The place is small and narrow and take out only. The employees were VERY a polite and pleasant. I even observed them checking each order to make sure it was correct when they called your name. I think they call or text you when your order is ready, but I wasn't asked to give my phone number, so I just waited inside until my name was called. I ordered the fish hoagie and a fish platter with Mac & cheese and candied yams. The platter came with a hefty piece of cornbread. The fish was fried and had a nice golden color and it was fried just right. It was light and crispy. The sauce had a nice flavor and the roll was very fresh. They also gave nice portions of fish. On my platter, I liked that my fish was separate from my side of Mac & Cheese and candied yams. Many places let the fish on top of the sides and the fish gets soggy. The Mac had a pretty good taste. I wished my candied yams were a lil sweeter and softer, but they were good. If the lines were long today, I would have driven past again; but I'm glad I got a chance to get in today. It was worth it.

Garden of Bilal is definitely a staple in uptown! It is great to see the old recipes back in action. I got the fried fish platter with greens, yams, and Mac & cheese on the side. The greens were a bit bitter. I believe the yams have pineapples in them. I had to get used to that, but they were tasty. The fish and Mac & cheese were amazing! I will be back!

I was torn in deciding to write this review simply because I do not feel good about giving a negative review to a small business; however, there was just too many issues with my order that must be addressed. I ordered a wing platter with potato salad and broccoli and my husband got a fish, potato salad and broccoli platter. Every wing in my platter had broken bones/blood and the color of the meat was weird. The potato salad's texture was mushy and water logged. I tried to doctor it up, but there was no hope for it and the broccoli needed some serious seasoning. My husband, who is not a picky eater said that his fish had a funny taste to it. When I tasted a piece, I immediately knew that it had been freezer burned. Both platters went in the trash! That was a waste of almost $40.00.

    FISH FRIED RICE PLATTER

Went here finally after hearing they had reopened under a new name , it almost taste as I remember . The service is Good but the wait time is long , the line is usually out the door , typical store where you order not really a seating area . I also purchased the fish hoagie is was good you can add what you would like on it . Soul food is also sold here so the menu is quite extensive . I'll try something else soon

Fried rice which is just brown rice. So disappointed

A few additional cookies tossed in our delivery for free, made it feel like a better value since we had some leftover to enjoy with morning coffee. Anticipated a long wait given the time & day, but a friendly face handed them to us in less time than Domino's. The Deluxe cookies were a treat w/ the peanut butter varieties a fav, but ALL the cookies, including the ones I didn't pick, were delicious. A little annoying the upcharges for deluxe varieties when I thought that was the point of picking an option that includes them, but the additional free cookies helped soften that. After we finished, they handed us a whole box of cookies just for hanging out and giving feedback. That was a solid surprise and super generous. I swing by Insomnia Cookies on random days too because sometimes you just need a warm cookie to reset your mood. They always come out soft, gooey, and fresh from the oven. The store itself is clean and kind of cool to look at. There's a whole wall covered in giant industrial-style on and off switches. I still wish I could have pulled one just to see what would happen. Staff was chill and genuinely helpful. They were patient while we tried to figure out which cookie was which during the ranking, and they kept the energy light and fun. Same when they handed out the free boxes. Whoever runs the HQ location clearly knows how to make the experience feel special.

The place was busy, but that didn't delay our orders. We could hold a conversation without having to speak loudly. We bought some dark roast beans, ground there for espresso, to take home.

Even the grilled bread used for the bruschetta tasted fresh. Arancini with pork and veal ragu peas was great; the peas added a new texture to the traditional arancini. We also got fried artichokes as an appetizer. It was crispy and salty -- I could munch on that alone. For the entree, I got the veal braciole with tagliatelle and tomato sugo. The whole dish tasted homey, like what you would get at an Italian family's house. The veal braciocle was small, and I wished there was more protein and less pasta to be more balanced. For dessert, everyone raved about their gelato. Their pistachio flavor was clearly a favorite, as it had intense fresh pistachio flavor. It was also tan in color, as you would expect a pistachio nut to be, not the artificial green color added to other pistachio gelatos. I had the amaretto cherry flavor. It was good too, although I wished it had more cherries. A few people got their espresso, and really enjoyed it. They roast their own coffee on-site, so I am not surprised again how fresh it tasted. Tip: Pour a little of their fantastic coffee over your gelato to make your own fresh affogato. I came here with a large group and despite the tight space, we felt cozy. Service was spectacular. We had multiple food allergies in the group, and the waitstaff took each one very seriously, asking down to the detail if the allergy was by consumption or cross-contamination. Thank you to the staff for being so conscientious!

They definitely seem consistent, which I really appreciate. I came with a couple of friends on a Saturday afternoon, and wow... this place was packed. Even with the crowd, the staff stayed friendly and worked quickly, so we didn't have to wait too long for our drinks. One thing I still love is the seating. They have giant plushies sitting in the booths, so if you're by yourself, you're not just awkwardly staring at an empty seat across from you. Maybe I'm the only one who appreciates that, but I think it's a cute touch. The matcha here is the real deal. It's bright green, fragrant, and has that rich, earthy flavor with just enough natural bitterness that you know they're using quality matcha. A lot of places advertise matcha, but this one actually delivers. I ordered one of their matcha desserts with ice cream, and it was creamy, refreshing, and let the matcha flavor shine instead of burying it under sugar. My only complaint is that it was pretty warm inside. It was a hot summer day, and I honestly couldn't tell if the air conditioning was running or if it was just fans. Either way, it wasn't very cool inside. Thankfully I had ice cream, so it didn't bother me too much, but it's something to keep in mind if you're stopping by on a really hot day. Overall, another great visit. Friendly staff, consistently high-quality matcha, and a fun atmosphere. If you're a matcha lover, this is still one of my favorite spots in Chinatown.
