After being a patient of Dr. Mattingly for more than a year, I discovered that I had been overbilled by $2,067 in 2025 and an additional $108 in 2026 for just two visits. When I initially raised the issue, the office only agreed to refund $539, and only after I challenged the discrepancy and spent significant time researching and providing a detailed accounting of what was billed, what was allowed under the insurance contract, and what had already been paid by my insurance carrier, did the office issue a second refund check for $1,528. My review revealed that I was being billed for amounts exceeding the insurance carrier's contracted allowable rates, charges that should not have been billed under the provider agreement, and amounts that had already been paid by the insurance company. In total, more than $2,175 was refunded. At that level, it is difficult to dismiss this as a simple billing mistake. Patients should not have to become insurance experts or conduct forensic audits of their own accounts to ensure they are being billed correctly. The billing staff should be properly trained to read provider EOBs, understand contractual insurance adjustments and terms, and accurately account for payments received from insurance carriers. Dr. Mattingly is the ONLY chiropractor I have ever visited who required full payment upfront for an entire treatment plan. After my experience, I have serious concerns about this practice and would urge anyone considering treatment to closely monitor every bill and insurance statement they receive. Review your EOBs. Verify every charge. Ask questions. Don't assume the billing is accurate.
