James Joyce is a VERY cool little Irish bar near the Duke campus. Dark on the inside (long, like a Chicago Irish bar) with a back patio that's open, colorful, well decorated, and (feels) PRIVATE. We were able to enjoy the sunshine, drinks, food, and even make small talk with some employees and locals. Even though JJ was slow in the afternoon, you can easily envision them handling a large outdoor crowd. Porsche (bartender) warmed up to us and even ran some drinks and food outside. We were most impressed by JJ's wings...big, meaty, perfectly fried and sauced. Beware: The hot is REALLY hot. But hey, who're we to back down from a spicy wing challenge? Just keep the drinks coming, Porsche. Yes, the fries were also good and BEYOND what you're expect at a small little Irish bar. We were pleasantly surprised by the food, presentation, and flavors. Our main menu feedback would be to (also) offer marinara with the cheese sticks/curds. After trying the wings and fries, we have zero doubt that the fried mozz would have also been dynamite. We look forward to our next JJ run, cold brews, and a plate of (this time) medium wings.

We are in St Patrick's celebration month mode and visiting Irish Pubs! This is a gem that if in the area is a must-stop! We sat at the bar and had our drinks and food. The food was delicious and I wished I'd have gotten other items! It all looked so good! The service and our waitress were professional and friendly! The menu was well made and not busy. The inside made me feel as if I was in Ireland again the wood bar and decor the feel I got was warm and welcoming! There is outdoor seating and no worries there are patio heaters out there. If you are in the area or for Saint Patrick's Day I do recommend coming here and showing some good old Irish love! Here's to a long life and a merry one! Slainte!

Amazing food, atmosphere and fun wait staff! It's a cozy pub that really makes you feel like you are in the UK. You might question the sizeable Snoopdog statue that is pushing Mexican Corona in an Irish Pub...but this is perfect example of hilarious British humor. We ordered food for takeout and enjoyed it in our hotel room. The GARLIC THYME "MAIN STREET FRIES" are stupendous! Tons of garlic so maybe not date night material, but certain good for food bliss. You can order as appetizer but also same fries that comes with the entrees. The FISH AND CHIPS was perfection. The breaded cod was tender, but oh man, the tartar sauce is best I've ever tasted!!! It suspect it had a little malt vinegar in it, which is brilliant for this notorious UK dish. The wife ordered the AVOCADO BLT which she said was delightful. It comes with the obvious bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado. But the secret sauce is the GOAT CHEESE PESTO. Drool Even the COLESLAW side that came with the Fish and Chips was amazing. It wasn't sour like many but creamy and ever so slightly sweet.

Nice lunch with coworkers today! We came here because neighboring Federal doesn't open until 5 on Mondays, but we were happy to try James Joyce. Now we're looking forward to a return visit! We each ordered different dishes, but the biggest hit at the table was the huge plate of crispy Brussel sprouts!

Great little pub, perfect spot to watch soccer. The staff couldn't be nicer, bangers and mash are spot on. The true gem is their French toast. Y'all. It was the most balanced blend of sweet and spices, toast and syrup, wow! If I lived here, I'd want to be a regular here.

1st time in, visiting the area from out of state & was told by a colleague to check it out. Irish Pub decor - dark wood - and welcoming. The food - bangor's & mash & dessert was some fried pastry from heaven the bartender recommended - were freaking fabulous!! I will definitely be back if I'm in the area again!

Stormy on the back deck of James Joyce. If you're looking for a break from the NC summer heat check out the beer garden at James Joyce.

Good service and food. I had no complaints aside from there was not much light at table. It was a little dark and hard to see menu.

I'm owning up to it: this is totally an "oh, my goodness! You're two steps away from the Div School…read moreand you have BEER ON TAP!" review. I'm sure that their coffee is fine - folks by the hundreds file through this place to consume the java, eat their food, and sit at their nice assortment of both inside and outside tables. I've met friends, ecclesial leadership, and professors here, all of whom show a common level of casual comfort with being here that this place exudes. People like coming to Twinnie's, and it's obvious. But, really... BEER ON TAP! SO close to where I'm constantly in class. I'm pretty sure that lunch time is too early to order a pint, but with Durham summer sun and Twinnie's being so close, it's hard to avoid simply being haunted by three ghostly words: BEER ON TAP! Yes, Adam - SO close to you. You could walk over there SO easily and just... get... a little something delicious to sip? You know? Breakfast in a cup, you could say? I mean, we're talking high-quality hops, aromatic grains, premium malt - sounds like a balanced morning meal. But it's 8:15 AM, Baker Brain - your class starts in 15 minutes, and there's no WAY you're staying awake with a breakfast like that in your belly. Okay, okay... you're right. But, second breakfast? Elevensies? Lunch? Supper? I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip. Located in the CIEMAS Engineering building. Proclaimed to be an "Irish pub", which in a large university in the south could mean just about anything. Luke tells me that the wraps are good. I'll have to try them, Mr. C., along with one of their breakfast pastries, made-to-order sandwiches, or salads. Lots of bottled & cold drink choices, as well as tea bags. For serious. Boxes and boxes of 'em. Free ice water, for those of you like me who enjoy bumming that stuff for free between classes. And.... BEER ON TAP!

There are tots were exceptional, though, and I am a fry girl. I didn't love the truffle seasoning on the fries but the quality of the fries was good. Burgers: I had the goutmet burger with truffle fries. The burger was overcooked (well done) and the rosemary aoili was off.. We had a show to catch so I did not send the burger back, but I think it would have been way better had it been cooked to the temperature I requested and if I had asked for the rosemary aoili to be omitted. The burger that my date had was better. The smashburger had a mix of sirloin and another cut of beef. It was topped with melty cheese ans bacon. It was moist and a solid burger! Service very attentive. Our waiter was very good. I just wished he had asked me how the burger was. I would still give them another try. Nice spot and waiters are great.

The pimento cheese chicken sandwich was good but didn't have nearly enough pimento cheese. After that experience, we decided to come back tonight. Sadly, the menu we enjoyed was completely gone and replaced. The server assured us the new menu was much better. We ordered the Airline Chicken and the Steak Frites. The chicken was good, along with the spicy sauce but the plate felt empty. The steak was barely edible and mostly fat. The arugula salad it came with wasn't good either. Luckily the rosemary fries were very tasty. Overall, we will not be back for the "new and improved" menu. The service didn't help, as they were understaffed.
