I took a 6 week boxing class with Jamel: Mom's Fight Club! It was such an excellent workout every week, and I received weekly instructions for workouts to do between sessions. I often hurt myself when I start new workout routines, Jamel was so patient and helped me to modify when needed. My arms were SORE and I'm wearing tank tops again. I highly recommend Jamel! read more

Jamel has been my personal trainer for 2 years now. I get an full body workout that kicks my butt every week plus he is has lots of good nutrition advice to maximize results. Jamel was originally my trainer for Muay Thai, but he has since been my personal trainer for almost 4 years. Through Boxing, Cardio, TRX, free weights, pull-up exercises... his workouts and guidance have been crucial in fixing my mobility and improving my overall fitness. Working with him, I've seen an increase in my strength and endurance. He's also given me overall lifestyle changes to consider stretching, diet, and overall maintenance to avoid the common pitfalls of getting older and disregarding your own personal health. He is flexible but still holds you accountable for your own personal fitness journey. Jamel's workouts were also pivotal in my recovery from an Achilles Tear I suffered about 1.5 years ago. Working with him has not only regained ankle/leg/hip mobility but also has led me feel stronger and more control of my body to prevent other injuries. read more

I first met with Jamel in 2011, where he quickly became my favorite instructor at Start Fitness and TRX Training Center. When my husband asked for a trainer recommendation in 2021, I sent him straight to Jamel. His body transformed so drastically that when my health and fitness goals changed in 2024, I started joining their training sessions. I currently train with Jamel twice a week. Since then I've consistently gained strength and had a blast doing it. Even though my husband and I are at wildly different strength levels, Jamel has no problem training us at the same time. He's also very adept at training us at our home and isn't limited by our space or equipment. I'm constantly challenged by Jamel and can easily bring his workouts to my own gym for an additional strength workout. One last call out for Jamel - these workout have been a fun healthy activity to do together as a couple. It's been amazing to do something so positive for our bodies and our relationship at the same time. Thanks Jamel! read more

I've been working with Jamel 3 days a week on average for a little over two years. My intention is to continue with him indefinitely. I originally came to him with a list of health and fitness goals I had: low body fat percentage, increased strength and flexibility, better balance. Being in my 40s I wanted to head off aging. I was starting to get those aches and pains we all get as we move through middle age. Two years later I can say that all of that is gone. All of it. I look better. I am stronger than I have ever been. I feel like I have shaved at least 10 years off my life. The aches and pains I was starting to get aren't even a consideration anymore. I have so much energy that I have to force myself to take rest days. I have now gained enough momentum where I don't want to quit. I look forward to the workouts to see progress. To continue to build. Sure, I don't want to move every day, but that's where having someone showing up and keeping you accountable helps. I had a few criteria for a trainer. I wanted someone that could mix things up and not give me the same workouts every time. Keep things interesting and challenging, but not discouraging. Focus on fundamentals like strength, balance, and coordination. Jamel has done all of this while staying flexible with workout variations, modifying fitness goals, and scheduling. I have inevitably had minor injuries, but he has given me mobility and strength exercises to work through those to recover faster than I otherwise would. He knows what he is doing. The experience shows. Obviously, some of this is what you put into it. A personal trainer can only get you so far if you are not willing to be consistent, eat well, and make health a priority. You get out of it what you put into it. If you need someone to guide you, keep things interesting, and push you to be better, then Jamel is it. I can't recommend him highly enough. read more

I first met Jamel in 2012 when I was a member @ TRX Training Center in SF and found myself consistently booking his classes given they were the perfect blend of intensity and functional training. When I was looking for someone up for the challenge of helping me move and hit fitness goals 2024, Jamel was highly recommended to me by another fitness class instructor that knew he could handle my knee trouble. I am not an easy client; I have had multiple knee surgeries and Jamel was up for the challenge! Over the past 6mos, Jamel helped me build a stronger foundation that increased bodyweight strength and endurance across TRX, kettlebells, dumbbells, etc., and was the perfect fit for my health + fitness goals. Thank you Jamel for all you do! read more

Jamel is a rare, compelling and powerful combination to find in a trainer: confident and curious, firm and kind, creative and intentional, skilled and intuitive, disciplined and dynamic. I am a woman, person, body in my mid-forties. I am also a mom, wife, business owner, daughter of aging parents, friend and modern mammal. I and my body have been through a lot: decades of competitive athletic endeavors, pregnancy, birth, surgeries, challenges, triumphs, aging, changing, evolving. When I train with Jamel, I feel seen and trained as not only the person and body I am today, but the history of who I have been, and perhaps, most importantly, the way want to live and who I want to be as I grow older. Jamel trains me to move - with strength, flexibility, stamina, confidence, steadiness, and fortitude - "at the speed of life". It is an invaluable gift to be able to face, navigate, harness and embrace the season of life, body and nervous system I am in with confidence, strength and sturdiness. I am grateful to have Jamel on my team and consider him a central pillar of what makes that possible. read more

Jamel is awesome! I worked out with another trainer who I loved to the moon and back and he left a big shoes to fill when he moved. Jamel focuses on movement and strength of the body and as I'm getting older that's exactly what I need! In 10 sessions, I can see a noticeable improvement in my form and my muscles have some definition. He motivates me to strive harder every time. And we have a good time, or at least I have a good time. bonus points for location right by the beach with easy parking at a price that's soooooooooo worth it! read more

I have been working with Jamel for six months, he is an amazing person and trainer. I have always worked out and pushed myself hard; running miles, swimming miles, lifting as heavy as I could, but due to injuries and associated pain, my body had become imbalanced and almost immobile. Jamel assesses each client based on their current physical, mental, and physiological state. With his expertise and guidance my mind, body, and self- knowledge are now on a new and beneficial pathway. As a client gets stronger, he continues to assess and make adjustments/ enhancements to the training. I cannot recommend him highly enough! read more

I've been training with Jamel for over a year now and I can confidently say it's the best workout I've ever done. Before seeing Jamel I had been working with another personal trainer for 2 years and while I enjoyed that, my strength had started to plateau without me really realizing it. Less than a month after starting with Jamel I could see improvements. Jamel does a great job of assessing your strength and constantly pushing you. Each session I go to I honestly feeling stronger than the one before. He also does a great job at incorporating lots of different exercises. It always feels new. Most recently we've started boxing which has been a game-changer. I look forward to it so much and feel like I'm actually learning proper form and positioning which can be hard in a group setting Jamel is also great with injuries. When I started I was about 7 months out from a major knee injury/ surgery. With Jamel, I feel much more comfortable than I do in large group classes. I know that he truly understands injuries and ailments and has helped me get stronger and rehabilitate my knee in a way that feels safe. read more

I've met Jamel many years ago at the TRX center and he became my favorite instructor right away! I've gone to his bootcamp and boxing classes over the years and just started training with him again 3 months ago and I LOVE the result. He listens to your goal and pushes you to achieve them. He truly is one of the best trainers that I have ever worked with and I highly recommend him. read more

Jamel is the man. He knows exactly how to adjust a program based on your fitness level. Let me tell you about Jamel's patience. He has it in ABUNDANCE. In September 2017 I had shoulder surgery, which stopped me from surfing for a significant amount of time. I was by no-means an advanced surfer pre-surgery, but lost a lot of strength, and confidence to boot! Finally back in the water in April 2018 - Jamel has been an amazing coach every step of the way. He helped me identify everything that I needed to work on and was armed with all of the knowledge to help me overcome the challenges. I felt like it took me forever to grasp each and every concept, but that was never a problem for Jamel. We just tried again. And again. And again. Until it clicked. Confidence was by far my biggest issue and having Jamel in the water with me has improved that so much! I know my limits and push myself within them. I love surfing so much, and Jamel has been such an instrumental part in my development as a surfer. If only it were realistic to have him at every surf session! Can't recommend enough. read more

My wife, Emily, and I have trained with Jamel for years and we couldn't give him a higher recommendation. Whether in a gym, a park, your street or your garage, if you and a spouse are looking for a trainer who will guide you with the perfect blend of strength, flexibility and cardio, look no further than Jamel. He will take your fitness where you want to go and subtly knows where it needs to go. Jamel doesn't yell or scream. He is calm, prepared and focused. He has both a quick and silly wit which can help distract you during the 3 sets of 10 burpees you're doing.... Jamel is reliable and kind and provides great marital therapy while you're getting fit. And who doesn't need that? Just do it...with Jamel. Phil (Co)Owner, Phil's Gym (um, garage) read more

I have been training with Jamel for quite sometime and this review is long overdue . He is one of the best trainers out there for TRX . The breadth of movements he has in his repertoire is just amazing and you don't even need to lift any weight !! The exercises will test and develop your strength to a new level. His intense focus on your form is something that I really appreciate even when you are in a group class is just awesome. He is very friendly and helps you with any questions that you have or for any injury that you need to manage while training . Highly recommended! Jamel is a very focused and patient trainer. I like results. I like being the best. And, I also know how far away I am from having the results I want. When you train with him, know that nothing is cookie-cutter. He will watch you move. He will see how your body moves during the warm-up and based on those movements, develop your training session to you. His attention to detail and correction to body position in each class has helped me see the start of the results I want. His focus is on full body training with weights, body weight training, core-strength and mobility. I've known Jamel for years and being able to finally train with him and tap into this expertise is getting me that much closer to my fitness and nutrition goals. read more

Jamel is fantastic. He does a good job of pushing you and tailoring sessions to work best for each of his clients. Every session was a lot of fun! read more

I just got back from my first bootcamp class and am very impressed. I'll be honest, I'm traditionally a huge Barry's bootcamp fan and have been going to their classes a couple times a week for almost a year - it's gotten me in great shape. I try other classes and nothing seems to challenge me the same way..... until now! Again, very impressed and I plan to incorporate regular visits into my routine. What I liked: - bright, airy facility with clean mats (ie not stinky and they were actively wiping up our sweat as we worked out so we wouldn't slip) - 6am and 7am option, also adding more days to the schedule - great HIIT exercises with massive focus on form (something Barry's has a hard time with) - motivating, welcome attitudes - great balance of cardio strength - surprised by the no shoes/bare feet thing but really liked it.. forces our bodies to do what they are meant to do, use every little muscle to balance us really excited to have this studio nearby and come back soon! Thanks for the great workout and attention to detail! read more

The man, the myth, the legend. Jamel has been coaching me for years in San Francisco and I've never been disappointed by a session once. I've worked with him at numerous gyms around the area and his TRX coaching skills are masterful. His callouts on form variations of specific exercises to get that better burn are amazing and much appreciated. Jamel is a very experienced coach and it's a true pleasure to be apart of his workouts. Thanks Jamel! read more

Let's face it, we all want to be toned, lean & fit --even if we identify as an 'athlete first' (me). Jamel's workouts certainly deliver to this end, but with the added bonus of being functional (read: help you move well, for sport + daily life). I'm a triathlete & lift weights twice a week, and I needed a new strength routine. Enter Jamel + TRX. I felt super challenged yet within my limits, and I didn't leave HANDICAPPED like after dreaded CrossFit. He introduced me to new, dynamic exercises that engaged my core/abs the *entire* time, and the movements were so fun that I realized strength training doesn't have to be boring slog. Look- if you want the perfect trifecta of LEGIT experience, easy direction and fun instruction from a trainer, look no further. Jamel has it, and what's more- cuts through the B.S. seen with some 'talkative' trainers who over-instruct and fall short on delivering a solid workout. As a Sports Dietitian, I've worked in 3 different gyms, alongside SO MANY trainers over the years-- so I can recognize a bad trainer from an outstanding one. Jamel knows how to apply his knowledge (kinesiology) and translate it in a manner that is effective for the client so they too gain an understanding of WHY each movement is going to benefit them. Understanding the WHY behind his movements helped me recognize what I was neglecting in my own routine but also made glaring muscle imbalances evident. Super valuable to an athlete like me. Cannot make a higher professional recommendation than for Jamel as a personal trainer. read more

Jamel is awesome. I've been doing his 6am W and F bootcamp on Bush St. for a few months and love it. I can feel myself getting stronger and the hour workout flies by. Workouts are always challenging and pretty varied so I don't get bored. Also love that class is indoors in case the weather sucks. Totally recommend to anyone who wants a kick ass workout to jump start the day! read more

I've been doing Jamel's working via ClassPass and it is the best class I have done. Perfect blend of cardio and strength exercises. Using the Fitbit I've checked my heart rate during the work out and it is the perfect workout hill as you build up to peak burn and then come back down. Most importantly, Jamel is a great instructor who takes the time to teach and make sure you are doing the exercises correctly and the classes are fun. read more

Jamel and I worked together to accomplish two personal goals -- I wanted to swing back into playing competitive tennis as well as run the DipSea Trail -- both of which required me to level up on my conditioning and commitment to staying injury free. Jamel knew just what to do -- he focused on form and drew from his well of expertise across TRX, Surf Coaching, and Muay Tai/Boxing optimize into our workouts. My tennis game and coastal trail runs have never felt better nor more powerful. read more

I started working out with Jamel less than a year ago and it's been one of the best investments I have made for myself physically and mentally. What's great about Jamel and makes him standout from other personal trainers, is his combination of strength training and cardio. Not to mention he pays super close attention to form, your strengths/weaknesses. I've worked out at Barry's, Rumble, Soul Cycle--you name it. While those still give you a decent workout, you definitely don't get the attention or as challenging of a workout you need to ensure you're making progress during your fitness journey. 10/10 would recommend Jamel to anyone, whether you're in shape or just starting out. Just be ready to put in the work :) read more

This review is also way overdue. Jamel is amazing. He not only motivates me, but the results from his class are incredible. He is kind, patient and an excellent trainer. I have been off and on taking his classes for four years and every time I come back, I can't remember why I stopped. All this classes are different and always target the whole body. I never feel bored or annoyed with the routines. He really is motivating while guiding you to succeed. A+ for sure read more

I've been training with Jamel for over four years now. I joined Start Fitness, where he was teaching, to get in shape for my wedding that year, and loved training with Jamel so much that I've stuck with it ever since then. He helped me get into the best shape of my life! When Start closed, I continued with Jamel because he always has a challenging, varied and fun workout. He doesn't want you getting up early for nothing! I highly recommend his classes... I've done quite a few boot camps and group exercise classes in the city and Jamel's is one of the better ones I've experienced. Great, clean, well-lit facility (a little hard to find under the Aikido and Judo signs) and I like working out in bare feet with a soft but responsive padded floor. His "warm up" gets your heart pumping better than some other full classes. The hour goes fast but you definitely get a full body workout with an extensive variety of movement. Personally love the old school hip hop music selection too -- Gangsta's Paradise yeah!! read more

I took a class from Jamel at TRX. He is a standard of what I would look for a group class setting: Clear verbal cueing, excellent demos, and most importantly, FUN!!!! Stop reading this and take his class. Now. ...are you still reading? Class. Now. You. Go. read more

I got introduced to Jamel through the TRX Training Center, where I have been working out for about a year. While I have great things to say about all the trainers there, I have to say that Jamel has been my favorite. He always pushes us hard, while taking care to check in about any injuries or questions we have. Fast forward a year, and I've now signed up for his Bootcamp classes nearby. While admittedly, I'm still in my first month, I have to say that it's been great so far. He mixes up the workouts each session, and pushes us both in terms of strength and cardio. The classes are smaller than the TRX center (nor now), so I definitely have enjoyed the added attention and support. If you're looking to have a great workout from an awesome trainer, don't hesitate - try this out! read more

For a long time, I have been telling myself that I will get back into shape - I was simply getting tired of having the physique of a grub worm. My indoor rower has been in my office for months as immobile as a statue, and has served most admirably as a drying rack for clothes. About four months ago, I discovered Jamel through MindBody. Jamel and Quincy are amazing, and I have been addicted to their classes ever since I huffed and puffed my way through day one. They not only are extremely attentive (and focus on teaching good form), but they are fun and caring, and together create a wonderful atmosphere in the class. While I still have some work to do on my beach body, I feel myself getting stronger by the week. I am reluctant to praise Jamel too much, as I appreciate the smaller class size. But he and Quincy deserve to have their classes completely packed - they are just too good to be missed. read more

I've been taking Jamel's bootcamp class for a few months now and I love everything about it! Workouts are challenging, fun and great for people at any fitness level. I started as a beginner and was surprised how much stronger I felt after only a few classes! There's a good combination of strength training (TRX, weights, body weight exercises ...) and cardio. Jamel is a great instructor - motivating, very knowledgeable and he always makes sure your form is correct throughout each movement. I never thought I would be capable of doing an intense workout at 7am, but now I can't imagine working out at any other time - Jamel's class is always the best way to start my day! read more

So, I won't lie, I have a Jamel bias as I trained with him a few different locations and think his workouts are the best, however, the boot camps at Performance Movement are NO exception. I consider myself to be relatively in shape, and yet, every time I leave his classes I've had my ass handed to me. That said you can go at your own pace and takes breaks as needed. His classes are a great mix of cardio and strength training. You will no doubt get an amazing sweat, learn some new moves, and leave feeling stronger. I am not much for committing to morning workouts but I will be adding the 6am or 7am Wednesday/Friday classes to me routine (well, most weeks). Awesome workout with Jamel's Performance Movement - HIGHLY recommended. Great way to switch it up and get in a great workout without all the frills. read more

For the past two years Jamel has been training me at his own Performance Movement Bootcamp or via TRX. Jamel understands how the body is supposed to operate, the cross training needed to avoid injury and maximize results. My weaknesses always show in his class which proves that Jamel knows how to focus on the facets of my workout that need the most work. My favorite takeaway: sometimes it is liberating to execute my own workout outside of a class setting and because of Jamel - I always have new movements I can execute on my own after taking his class at Performance Movement. That education alone - is worth investing time with Jamel. read more

Jamel is by far one of the best trainers I've ever worked with in my life. If you haven't worked out in a long time, aren't seeing the results you want, need a new workout routine, or want to challenge yourself in a way you never have before, RUN (not walk) to Jamel's next bootcamp class. Trust me, you will not find a better workout in all of San Francisco. Jamel will push you further than you ever thought you could go and you will start to see results quickly. When I first met Jamel, I couldn't do one push-up, knew nothing about TRX, could barely hold a plank, nor did I really know how to lift weights properly. Now I can do multiple sets of push-ups (even if I have to drop to my knees when I'm tired), I've learned many TRX moves (I'm still improving!) and I'm starting to see definition in my abs and arms. I also have dropped a waist size or two. I have never been more fit, strong and motivated in my life, thanks to Jamel. If you want a trainer who will take the time to show you different exercises, specifically those you've never done before, correct your form when it's off to get the most out of your workout, or simply are looking for someone to kick your A**, give Jamel's bootcamp a try. You will not be disappointed! read more
