He and his friends must be suffering from dementia, because they can't seem to recall Kate Brown no matter what they do. But my niece informed me that they'd started going to a new place across the street. Right between Ochoa's and Pepper's, in a shopping plaza selling phones, money transfers, and quinceanera dresses, was this lovely little neveria and palateria. We have shops that sell paletas back east, but the mango in the ice pops at this one tasted super fresh. My nieces went with ice cream, and opted for colorful, fruity varieties that they hadn't had at other places in town. The owners and workers were incredibly sweet -- and awfully kind to put up with my pidgin Spanish -- and encouraged us to take some paletas home with us. We picked away at them for the rest of the week. There's an old adage out there: You lure more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. My family and I are done going to camo-clad, sidearm-wielding, politically disgruntled vinegar traps to get frozen dessert. From now on, we'll go for the honey at Michoacana right across the street.
