It was worth it because the seafood and bbq were excellent-- especially onion rings! We like the bbq/bar decor, too. Nice family place though. Easy access off the highway, looks small from the outside and mildly delapidated. But inside it is open, huge, and uniquely decorated with hanging plants, animal heads and lots of hanging Xmas style lights. Staff is very friendly and was pretty quick on our visit(thankyou Dawn!!). Food is good southern fare, crowder peas and fresh fried okra were on the special board this visit. Pulled pork was great, not too smoky and with just a dab of sauce served on top and extra on the table for those who want it. The sauce is Memphis style, sweet and a little thick. All the sides were good; good onion flavor and pork in the baked beans, coleslaw was fresh and refreshing, okra tasted fresh picked. My family of five ate at this restaurant and will NEVER go back. I would give it 0 stars if possible. The food was very lackluster!!! The chips with the pulled pork were soggy. The fried catfish had absolutely no seasoning. I take that back, the fish did have a "old grease" flavor. We ordered a kid's burger for our 9 year old son. When it came time to check out we were charged 14.99 for his burger meal instead of 6.99. When we brought this to our waitress's attention, a snooty lady (from the bar) came to our table to say, "For future reference you need to clarify a kids burger because the waitress would have written it down if you had." Nevermind the fact that I pointed to the menu at the KIDS section while ordering. When we paid our bill she felt the need to say, "I don't want the server to think she did anything wrong when she didn't. If you'd said a kid's burger she would have written it down." We are here today after going to Spencer's for lunch and they had no place to sit so...My son had beef tips, my daughter had the Phillip cheese steak, my wife had the shrimp and catfish combo (maybe the best catfish I've ever eaten) and I had the brisket sandwich. I had plenty of cheese plates in my 60yrs and their cheese plates was the worst I ever had. they are over price food came out cold at 97degrees on the pork they put it in microwave I checked it again it was 119. (I have my own food thermos gun) I ask to see the manager. She said it was hot but would reheat it again. I told her she could keep it. She said fine but since I touch the food so she will still charge me for it. So I guess the health dept, allows them to give food to guest and put it back in the kitchen for the next guest to eat if you don't touch it. WHATEVER! I have eaten here several times in the last year. Tonight was the worst meals my husband and I have ever ordered. He had the buttery shrimp and baked potato. Worst dining experience ever. Traveled over an hour for lunch. Have been here before and liked so decided to return. Ordered the BBQ Plate. Which was okay..I ate the baked potato and 2 of the 3 ribs included. The chicken quarter tasted terrible and I kept smelling a sour smell. It was the pulled pork and it smelled tainted and made me literally gag. I informed my server and she apologized and agreed that it did indeed smell bad. She asked if there was something else she could get me and I said No, thank you, just please take this off my bill it is inedible. Well, 20 minutes later the bartender came over and informed me that they would not be able to take it off the bill. I politely told her that I was not paying for something that was inedible, she called the manager that took another 15 minutes to come to table. She was rude and would NOT listen to the complaint, she simply stated that there was NO way the food was bad and she was not taking it off the bill. Then she told me if I didn't pay for the BBQ plate, (rotten food) that she would call the police... AND SHE DID! Appalled. read more

I was visiting from Georgia and me and my girlfriends went here to eat. We were seated in the "back of the bus" section of the restaurant and our service was absolutely horrible. When our food finally came out, it was cold and under-cooked. When we asked for help, the waitress got an even worse attitude. Finally, we requested to have our money back and she flat out refused. I told her I wanted to speak to the manager about how she treated us. Lo and behold, the manager was a complete jerk!!! She treated us like the scum on the bottom of her shoe. Jake and Rip's was busy and looked like it was probably a great little dive BBQ place. I mean, the parking lot wasn't even paved, so they must be good, right? Wrong. The parking lot wasn't paved because they suck at being a restaurant and probably don't make enough money to pave it. It is a terrible sign at a BBQ joint when you ask the waitress what the best thing on the menu is and her response is that "the steaks are always good." It is also a terrible sign when there is a note in the menu that your food is supposed to look undercooked. I got the pulled pork plate, and while I understand that slow smoked pulled pork might be a little pink, there shouldn't be the sort of gelatinous blobs of fat in it that would melt at relatively low temperatures if you were actually to expose the meat to some heat. I also shouldn't have to use my knife to eat pulled pork. But I guess for undercooked, almost shredded pork it wasn't too bad. Some good stuff: the fried green tomatoes were good. My wife's catfish po'boy had some well-fried catfish in it, but not nearly enough for the size of the bun. Cole slaw was also conspicuously absent from the thing. So, they can indeed fry things. Another bad thing: a girl at a table near us had undercooked ribs and wouldn't eat them. They said that's just how they make ribs, and offered to replace them with some more fish if she wanted. Otherwise she could just not eat them and they'd take them off the bill. At restaurants that can afford to pave their parking lots, however, the restaurant typically doesn't just stand behind its inedible food. It fixes it or comps something beyond not making you pay for the inedible stuff. Oh, and one more: they got a B from the state health inspectors. I don't want to know what you have to do in Mississippi of all places to fail to get an A on a health inspection. read more

This is one of these places that seems packed in Grenada and I do not get the charm. First of all, it takes forever to get your drinks or your food. Its that way even when it is not busy. The waitresses never seem to get your food right...more time. The BBQ is dry and not that great. The catfish platter is small for what you pay...catfish nuggets, not fillets. Getting refills is a pain. I am usually ready to hurry up and get out of there by the time we are done...Its not the cleanest place either....Unless you are a native Grenada person, you will hate this place. read more

We stopped at Jake and Rips because it was along our route and we had read decent reviews. We had high hopes for the food as we love good BBQ and it is always fun to try the many different regional types. We were on the back stretch of an 11 state, 9 day "food tour" and were determined to have BBQ in MS. The food was decent, way better than some and we thought the pulled pork was outstanding! What makes this review a 5 star one was the service!! The staff was friendly when we arrived and the service was prompt. The food came out quickly and we were able to eat and get back on the road in record time. About 3 hours after we left( and a few states away) my phone rang and it was Blair from Jake and Rips. My son had left his phone in our booth. I was not about to turn around to go and retrieve it as I was tired and we still had a long drive ahead of us. I asked her to mail it, not really expecting her too, and she said she would. I assured my son, that they would send it, but thought we would never see it again. Much to my surprise 3 days after we got home, it arrived in the mail!! I am so touched that they went to the trouble and expense of mailing it to us. We were traveling back from Vicksburg to Mobile, AL when we randomly stumbled upon this place. And let me say... we ordered the BBQ chips appetizer and is was HUGE. My fiance and I split it and couldn't even eat all of it. It was probably the best BBQ food I have ever had. We've seriously contemplated driving all the way back to Grenada again just to have it... so you know it must be good! The prices are great as well and you get more than enough for your money. I love coming here for a good meal and a drink with my friends. The atmosphere is very laid back. There is a gas station right beside this restaurant and sometimes when I'm pumping gas the smell of the bbq drifts over to my nose and I have to go over to eat right away! Im in town for 10 days and want this place to be decent so bad that I tried it three times before I just gave up. The place has all of the makings of a very good restaurant but obviously doesn't care. Every order was wrong from the way the food was prepared to the way it was presented. Medium well steak served rare. 1/3 of it was so rare I couldn't touch it. They were fine with bringing me the bill didn't even offer a box for the left over portion. Marinara sauce for an appetizer came in a plastic container with a peal top lid served cold, don't try too hard guys! You dont want onions on your burger, no problem, here's some onions for you.
