I'm glad yelp has 5 star ratings... 2 just isn't enough and 4 was too high So, first of all don't expect much in the way of ambiance here... a literal hole in the wall... but I like holes in the wall because you usually get the best foods there. On to the review: First of all the salad really does need to be served cold or at least chilled, mine was served at room temperature. Taste wise it was ok, just lettuce and tomatoes with some crackers. Now, for what brought me here... The Chicken Fried Steak... while it was okay, I thought it was a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong, taste wise it was decent, but not as good as other places... I actually did like how they serve the steak on top of the gravy (which was good too) with a nice peppery taste... the mashed potatoes were pretty good, lumpy, but good.. that is just a sign that they are real. My wife had the cheese burger and the waffle fries. She said that the burger was ok, but I didn't do a review on it because I didn't try it... I did try the waffle fries and while a good flavor, I personally thought they needed to be crispyer. The staff was very friendly, especially our waitress, but I did not use her/them as part of the review because who knows if I were to ever get her again, but as a shout out, she was good. No dessert on this trip to review. read more

Had read about this place in the Fort Worth paper a couple of years ago, so we were passing through and stopped in for an appetizer and pie. (They're famous for their pies.) This place has been here for 60+ years and the exterior and furnishings are old, and worn, yet quite comfy. As they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover." We decided to split a cheeseburger and fries. It was really good and the fries are thin-cut waffle fries. Next we had pie...pecan and coconut cream. Yes!! As good as advertised. We met the current owner, the daughter of the original owners. She's been here her whole life.... Carrie. Interesting lady. After 5:00 on Tuesdays, burgers are $1 and the cheeseburger is $2. There are other nightly specials, as well. Come out and support this local legend!! read more

This was on my list to visit so we planned a trip specifically coming here from lunch on our way back home to Fort Worth from the hill country. Caught them after the Sunday lunch rush so sat right down and ordered. Love the old school diner with the soda fountain bar. Fresh pies were on display and had to save room too. The staff is all very friendly and down home. The prices are reasonable as well. I had the small (next size is double and then a triple party is XL) chicken fried steak with their fresh cut waffles fries. The CFS was remarkable and lived the gravy as well. Glad I opted for smaller size so I could have some pie. My wife let me have a bite of her patty melt and it was so delicious! You can taste the difference in a fresh groin beef patty too! The pies were amazing but my cherry jubilee was exceptional. Loved the homemade crushed crust and nuts. Great place to stop and have some down home cooking! read more

Jake & Dorothy's is a tradition coming through Stephenville!! OBVIOUSLY known for: their chicken fried steak, their waffle fries, and their homemade pies.. Don't even hand us a menu, we already know what we want walking in the door (chicken fried steak, waffle fries, gravy on our gravy, and cherry pie).. Our waitress, Dawn, is the sweet, punchy auntie that EVERYONE needs in their life - love her SO much!! Hands down, one of most favorite places on the planet!! read more

Just stopped in to get pie to go. Waitress was great! Described all the pies, I picked 4. It's my husband's 75th birthday. But looking around all the good looked and smelled wonderful. The pies I bought was great! We had cherry, chocolate meringue, pistachio pie, buttermilk pie. All was delicious! I will be back to eat dinner and of course pie. read more

Walked in expecting a place that competes with Mary's or Babes. Walked out thinking more like Grandy's or Applebees. Place is a hole in the wall. Staff walked around like they had escaped from a nursing home. Food was 100% flavorless. Had been looking forward to eating there for a while. Got that out of the way. read more

Looks like Garry H. beat me to Jake and Dorothy's. Except, I think the smoking section is gone....dammit. Part eatery, local hang out, liars club breakfast, and pie spot. GF and I spent the night in Stephenville before a Sunday trip to Abilene to pick up our new kitten. Coffee was excellent and so was the old men sitting nearby talking weather and other touchy subjects. Reminded me of where my dad used to hang out in Dripping Springs, Texas. We're settling into a booth making breakfast decisions. Two eggs for me; one for her. We both had hash browns. I asked the waitress if the bacon was pre cooked. She indicated it wasn't. Asked for soft and described what I wanted; it didn't go well. I'm personally not seeing why this place made any Texas Monthly list. Best bites for me was the biscuits with cream gravy. They also did manage to cook our eggs to order. Maybe I'm just grumpy about the burnt bacon. But, I can think of many small town restaurants that can represent way better on the the breakfast vittles. read more

The food and the atmosphere was outstanding. The waitresses were very friendly. Got the best Mexican omelette we've ever had here.

What a hidden gem in the heart of Stephenville! We've been in several times while I was visiting my son who attends Tarleton. The food is great, the staff are always helpful, and the price is fair. Try the pie for desert too! A perfect throw back to an original diner feel. read more

Last time I was in Jake and Dorothy's was 53 years ago. When I was a kid in Euless our church youth group would head out on the church bus at 0400 to go to Uvalde for Bible camp on the Frio. We'd stop at Jake and Dorothy's around 0600-0630 in July each year to have breakfast, which was a hamburger, and a bottle of milk in one of those small glass bottles that was a miniature of the old style milk bottle the milkman used to leave on your porch. Those were some of the best memories from my youth, and I occasionally still love a good hamburger for breakfast, and that goes back to Jake and Dorothy's "July each year" breakfast for the church youth group from Euless. Thank you for your service each year! I need to make it back there soon one more time. read more

My husband likes this place and I used to as well. I love the waitresses. I love the fact that it's kind of dated inside. what I don't like. Is that my food never comes out hot. If I order breakfast, the eggs are hot. The potatoes are cool to lukewarm at best. if I'm going to pay for hot food and want it served HOT not lukewarm. Kitchen staff needs to do better. And the bad thing is, I even tell the waitress if my food does not come how hot I'm sending it back. And it still comes out lukewarm. So I never get to actually eat with the people T my table. Everybody else at my table seems to be fine with lukewarm food or they're just terrified of sending it back to the kitchen. I don't know which one but Jake and Dorothy's kitchen staff needs to do better. read more

Food was definitely good. Hubby and I both had plate lunch. Entree and 3 sides plus bread and dessert! Not being a local wasn't greeted and told to sit anywhere when we came in so I had to ask and also had to ask for a menu. The waitress was however nice but busy. Otherwise was just what we expected after reading other reviews. read more

Well this place is popular. I'm not sure why. I'll give it 3 stars because the catfish I ordered was good enough. Unfortunately, we were a party of 7, and two of the guys ordered hamburger steak which was completely burnt and inedible. 3 of the other guys didn't get their food to the point where we were going to be late for an appointment, so they asked for it in a box to which the waitress yelled "fantastic!" One guy also asked how big the soup portion was and she told him it was the size of a can of soup. Take that for what it's worth. The salad is just lettuce and tomatoes. The waitress was also kind of pushy about getting a tip. We left a tip of course but she asked how much it was going to be when we gave her our card which is kind of weird to me. I probably wouldn't recommend this place for the food, but it was definitely a memorable experience. read more

Great "home cooked" food and "home" feel! Reminded me of sitting in my grandparents kitchen, smelling the delicious aroma of a meal being prepared with love. The food gave the same reminder. I had the chicken fried steak and it was as good as "grandmas"! My young daughter, who normally has a small appetite, had the BLT and she ate every bite! Our waitress reminded me of family serving at a big gathering, just naturally and joyfully making everyone feel comfortable. read more

This place is a staple of Stephenville. All of the locals and Tarleton students know about this place and once you know and go you definitely will want to go back again and again! The chicken fried steak melts in your mouth it is so tender. They tenderize real sirloin steak right in the kitchen, bread and fry it. I ordered the large one with the real mashed potatoes so I could have take home extras. I got 3 extra meals out of the one order! Everything they make is good. Used to be better quality food. Has deteriorated. I had cheeseburger and side of onion rings. My friend had regular order (not AYCE or not Senior portion) with only waters to drink. Bill was an outrageous $37+. $41+ with small tip. Service was also spotty. Way way too expensive with low quality of food. Burger was overcooked. Onion rings cold. Catfish was pathetic. I had their chicken fried steak with their "waffle fries," and let me tell you it was so terrible, steak was absolutely just fatty and gritty. Walking into Jake & Dorthys is the epitome of Southern Hospitality, not just inside but out. As we were parking, one of the cooks taking his break outside waved from afar. All the staff greeted us with warm and friendly hellos, which made us feel very comfortable being it was our first visit here. Will I come back? Absolutely! Will I recommend this place to others? Most definitely. Now let's talk about the other part of what makes this place so unique. For me, it reminds me of stepping into my grandmother's kitchen. Fresh ingredients, real eggs, and biscuits made daily. Be sure and plan on visiting early because the warm fluffy biscuits run out quickly. Also, order a side of french toast! It was the BEST french toast I've had. If you are passing through Cowboy County or want to take a road trip, add this place to the stop, and you'll thank me later. read more

I'm very disheartened at the moment. Saturday night, 9PM. Here with only two other tables. This place should be packed. Community needs to come together and support tradition and history. Great breakfast! Great staff! Stopped in for a traditional "diner style" breakfast and Jake and Dorothy's did NOT disappoint. Although we were just past the "breakfast time" the kitchen was still happy to accommodate. My eggs were perfectly scrambled, the bacon was thick and crispy and the biscuit melted in my mouth. Got a side of white gravy that was sooo amazing!! The coffee was perfect. On top of that we had trouble figuring out which sweet person was our waitress because all three behind the counter were constantly attentive. We will definitely be back! read more

We had super high expectations for this dainty and homely cafe and were there for about 45 minutes. I got the special of the day and in fact watched as it sat on the counter for 10 minutes until my mothers hamburger was done. When I finally got my plate the fries and chicken were cold and my toast was very soggy. I had half the mind to ask them to warm it up in the microwave. I'd like to say I will give them a second chance, since I liked the vibe, but I'm not so sure read more

I loved everything about this place. The fact that it's 70 years old and looks it in the best way possible. The fact that the waitresses have clearly been here forever and serve you with a wink, a smile and a "thank you, darlin'." And of course the fact that the food was as delicious as I'd heard. The diners were all such regulars - no one needed a menu. Jake and Dorothy's Cafe is one of those old gems. An authentic country diner that's charm only increases with age. If you are ever in the area, stop. Order the chicken fried steak (their specialty) and a sweet tea. Take in the wood paneled walls, the well-loved counter tops and the southern hospitality in this classic Texas cafe. read more

Jake & Dorothy's Cafe - The lunch special. It even came with banana pudding, for dessert. - Cafes Near Me - Stephenville, Texas

Drove by one day and saw a lot of cars parked outside, read the mixed reviews and thought we would give it a try. Was told the Chicken Fried Steak was their specialty and combined with the waffle fries is what made them famous. Salad was a handful of iceberg lettuce with four chunks of tomato. That was definitely the warning as how the entree was going to taste. CFS came out tepid at best and it sat on a scoop of gravy that was ice cold. No amount of salt was going to save this disaster of an entree. The famous waffle fries were so limp, they probably had been out of the fryer over 15 minutes. Would love to know what brought all the cars that we saw the previous day! Needless to say, we won't be back! read more
